have become really obsessed recently with the fact that house md takes place in new jersey. because obviously the show itself doesnt make much reference to the larger city that surrounds it, PPTH (more commonly known as malpractice general) is only in princeton because its a relatively big city that doesnt have any widely-known stereotypes associated with it. primarily, house is a medical drama that needs to be situated somewhere that it makes logical sense for a vast variety of interesting cases to take place.
but dear god they’re in JERSEY. the opportunities that were lost. a patient comes in with delusions that the jersey devil is haunting them. a street performer at the shore suddenly loses use of his arms and nobody can explain why. a woman that is obviously supposed to be Snookie but they couldnt actually get the real snookie so its just some actress who kind of looks like her is the patient of the week. some guy comes in with a really stereotypical jersey accent and it turns out to be a symptom of a neurological problem (he’s from maine, has only lived in jersey for 6 months. the problem is like. some sort of bacteria that exists only in maine. or something. idfk)

Describing the plot of a winner's room fic out loud really does humble me. Trying to explain the untitled Bryce Harper winners room fic to Beryl had me like gosh I sound like i should be on a list of people who can't be around religious buildings and schools but I SWEAR it's a tender exploration of intimacy and the rituals we create to make ourselves feel safe.

Joe's Meat Market - Main Street in South Bound Brook, NJ
I became aware of Joe's Meat Market after seeing it on a Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives rerun that featured their antipasto bread. Now, our boy Guy claimed it was a "destination meal" and, considering it's only a 15 minute drive from my job, I figured that alone made it a must-try for me. I went with full intentions of trying the antipasto bread, but upon walking in was greeted with a pretty stacked pizza counter featuring a daily special of any 2 slices and a can of soda for $5. You read that right...ANY 2 slices. I just couldn't pass that up. I settled on a margherita and...some kind of shrimp slice? Pricewise, this meal is a steal. The slices were big and filling with good dough (both crispy AND doughy) and plentiful toppings. Not a ton of flavor on either though, but it's still hard to beat paying less than $2.50 for specialty slices in 2023.
I did eventually go back to try the antipasto bread because c'mon how could I not, and it was tasty...but I don't know if I would consider it a "destination meal." It's pretty much a calzone on steroids packed with antipasto meats that would be pretty impossible to finish in one sitting on your own. I got through about half and even that felt like too much. Additionally, while I'm not usually a fan of dipping stuff like this in marinara sauce, I've gotta say that Joe's marinara was actually pretty good! All in all, I enjoyed my experiences at Joe's, but I don't think it's worth traveling great distances to try. If you're local to the area though, I recommend stopping in. They have a huge selection so I'm sure I'll be back to try some more menu items!

Everything in every diner tastes exactly the same. The western omelet. The bacon cheeseburger. The clam chowder. The chicken alfredo and wilted broccoli. The fried fish. The coffee. The pudding in a cup. It doesn't matter, you'll have the same lingering, comforting taste in your mouth after you leave.

Bruce eating Pancakes in Roberto's Diner, Freehold, New Jersey yesterday. He looks tired and a bit pale, probably recovering from treatment, good to see him active. ❤ (It's the places' owner sitting with him, photo from Facebook)
