Developed just over a hundred years ago, the BCG vaccine is the only vaccine widely-used against tuberculosis, or TB, a disease caused by infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb, pictured). While highly effective in protecting infants from the most serious forms of disease, BCG is less successful in preventing transmission and lung disease in adults. TB remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases worldwide, with most cases in South-East Asia and Africa. New vaccines are being tested, including promising solutions combining antigens, molecules provoking an immune response specifically against Mtb, with adjuvants, that further stimulate the immune system. In recent phase I clinical trials, a freeze-dried vaccine, that would not need to be kept refrigerated, was found to be safe, causing no serious side-effects, and to trigger antibody production. While still in early stages of testing, a more robust vaccine would be hugely beneficial to vaccination campaigns in remote areas.

Liquid Biopsy Market: Trends, Growth Opportunities, and Future Insights
The liquid biopsy market is expanding rapidly, driven by advancements in precision medicine, non-invasive diagnostic methods, and growing demand for early cancer detection. This technology, which allows doctors to detect cancer and other diseases through blood samples instead of invasive tissue biopsies, is revolutionizing patient care by offering faster, less painful, and more accessible testing options. In this blog, we’ll explore the key trends, market drivers, growth opportunities, and challenges shaping the liquid biopsy industry.
Download PDF Brochure
What is a Liquid Biopsy?
A liquid biopsy is a non-invasive diagnostic test that detects genetic mutations, cancer markers, or other biomarkers in blood, urine, saliva, or other bodily fluids. Unlike traditional biopsies, which require tissue samples through surgery, liquid biopsies provide valuable information about a patient’s condition using small samples, significantly reducing discomfort and recovery time. Liquid biopsies can track a tumor’s progress, identify mutations, and monitor response to treatments, which is particularly useful for conditions that are difficult to monitor through tissue biopsies alone.
Key Drivers of Growth in the Liquid Biopsy Market
The liquid biopsy market is experiencing a surge in growth due to several factors:
1. Rising Incidence of Cancer and Demand for Non-Invasive Diagnostics
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, driving demand for diagnostic tools that can detect it early and with minimal invasiveness. Liquid biopsies provide a way to diagnose and monitor cancer by identifying specific biomarkers in the blood, offering a safer and less invasive alternative to surgical biopsies. This demand is particularly high in regions where the aging population and incidence of cancer are on the rise, such as North America and Europe.
2. Advances in Genomics and Precision Medicine
Advances in genomics and the trend toward precision medicine are pushing the liquid biopsy market forward. As genomic research reveals more about the genetic markers associated with diseases, liquid biopsy technologies are becoming more capable of identifying and monitoring these markers. This enables doctors to tailor treatments to individual patients based on their unique genetic profiles, resulting in more effective and personalized treatment plans.
3. Government Funding and Research Investments
Governments and research institutions are investing in cancer research and diagnostics, increasing funding for technologies that can advance early cancer detection. Many health agencies worldwide, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States, are allocating funds to support the development of non-invasive diagnostic tools, fostering innovation and accelerating the growth of the liquid biopsy market.
4. Growth in Companion Diagnostics
Companion diagnostics are tests that help assess a patient’s likelihood of responding to a specific treatment. These diagnostics are particularly important for cancer patients, as liquid biopsies can identify biomarkers that reveal how a patient might respond to certain therapies. This insight is invaluable in oncology, as it can guide treatment decisions and improve patient outcomes, further driving demand for liquid biopsy solutions.
Emerging Applications and Technologies
The scope of liquid biopsy applications is expanding beyond cancer diagnosis. New technologies are unlocking additional uses in areas such as:
1. Infectious Disease Monitoring
Liquid biopsies can detect circulating pathogens in the bloodstream, opening the possibility of diagnosing and monitoring infectious diseases like HIV, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. This potential is particularly valuable in areas with high rates of these infections, where liquid biopsies could improve diagnosis and treatment tracking in real time.
2. Cardiovascular Disease Detection
Research is exploring the use of liquid biopsies to identify cardiovascular biomarkers, which could assist in early diagnosis and monitoring of heart disease. By detecting certain genetic markers and proteins in the blood, liquid biopsy technology could help predict cardiovascular events, enabling preventive measures and more targeted therapies.
3. Neurological Conditions
Although still in early stages, liquid biopsy applications in neurology could revolutionize the diagnosis and monitoring of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. By detecting biomarkers associated with brain conditions, liquid biopsies offer a non-invasive way to diagnose neurological conditions earlier than traditional imaging techniques allow.
Competitive Landscape and Key Players
The liquid biopsy market is highly competitive, with several established companies and new entrants working to advance the technology. Key players include:
Guardant Health: Known for its Guardant360 test, which screens for cancer mutations in the blood. Guardant Health focuses on developing liquid biopsy tests for advanced-stage cancers and companion diagnostics.
Biocept: Specializes in liquid biopsy tests for both solid tumor cancers and brain metastases, with a focus on molecular diagnostics.
Foundation Medicine: Known for its FoundationOne Liquid test, which provides genomic profiling to inform cancer treatment decisions.
Natera: A leader in reproductive health diagnostics, Natera also offers liquid biopsy tests for oncology, including its Signatera test, which is used for minimal residual disease detection and monitoring.
GRAIL: Recently acquired by Illumina, GRAIL is focused on developing multi-cancer early detection tests using its proprietary liquid biopsy technology.
These companies are investing heavily in R&D, aiming to improve the accuracy, affordability, and applicability of liquid biopsies across a range of diseases.
Market Challenges
Despite its advantages, the liquid biopsy market faces several challenges:
1. Technical Limitations
Detecting circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and other biomarkers in blood samples is complex and requires advanced technology. While some cancers shed more ctDNA, making detection easier, others do not, which can limit the effectiveness of liquid biopsies in certain cases.
2. Regulatory and Reimbursement Hurdles
In many regions, liquid biopsy tests face stringent regulatory requirements and approval processes. Additionally, the cost of these tests and limited reimbursement options can restrict their accessibility for patients, particularly in lower-income regions or for those without sufficient healthcare coverage.
3. Data Interpretation and False Positives
Interpreting data from liquid biopsies is complex, and there is a risk of false positives, where benign mutations or low levels of ctDNA are detected as indicators of cancer. This challenge emphasizes the need for high accuracy and specificity in liquid biopsy technology to ensure reliable results.
Future Outlook and Growth Opportunities
The liquid biopsy market is expected to continue its upward trajectory, driven by technological advancements and broader applications. Key growth areas include:
1. Artificial Intelligence Integration
AI and machine learning algorithms are being integrated into liquid biopsy analysis, enhancing the accuracy of biomarker detection and interpretation. By automating complex data analysis, AI could reduce false positives and help refine liquid biopsy results, making them more reliable and accessible.
2. Expanding Beyond Oncology
While cancer detection remains the primary application, there is substantial potential for liquid biopsies in infectious disease, cardiovascular health, and neurology. The expansion into these areas could open new revenue streams for companies and significantly broaden the market’s scope.
3. Global Market Expansion
Emerging markets, particularly in Asia-Pacific and Latin America, offer high growth potential for the liquid biopsy market. Government initiatives, growing healthcare infrastructure, and a rising prevalence of cancer and other diseases are driving demand in these regions, presenting opportunities for companies to expand their global footprint.
Conclusion
The liquid biopsy market is at the forefront of a healthcare revolution, offering a less invasive, faster, and more precise way to detect and monitor diseases. With applications expanding beyond oncology, new technologies like AI integration, and increasing demand for non-invasive diagnostics, the liquid biopsy market holds immense potential for growth. As the industry continues to innovate, companies that leverage these advancements will not only drive the market forward but also play a pivotal role in shaping the future of personalized and preventive healthcare.

SDG in the real world will they work?
We all come from somewhere, from some community. Like all communities, we struggle with inequalities, especially in our rural communities (Du Toit, 2019), reduced health, hunger and poor education. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is an action call which challenges countries to collaboratively work together to achieve these goals. It was developed by the United Nations in 2015, (UNDP, 2015) consisting of 17 interlinked goals which provide guidelines to achieve a future where individuals live with dignity, comfort, and harmony within their communities by 2030. But what are these goals, and how do we implement them on a ground level? We aim to examine how we can use 5 of these goals in deep rural KZN as OTs.
The healthcare system in South Africa is poorly managed. The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) found that access to public health institutions in South Africa was drastically reduced due to reduced human resources, availability of medication, poor infrastructure and equipment, (Swanepoel, 2024) resulting in over-crowding, increased waiting time and limited availability of emergency transport. This results in the provision of poor healthcare to the poor, which affects those in rural areas more. This steers way clear from goal 3 of good health and well-being as stipulated in the SDG. What I have noted in the communities of Zwelibovu is that the people there struggle with compliance with their medication for communicable and non-communicable diseases like HIV and High Blood Pressure. Of which the clients I have seen state that the problem is the facilities are far from home and the fees to get to the health facilities are costly. They therefore end up not going causing them to develop secondary complications like CVA and other cardiovascular diseases. In my attempt to achieve goal 3 (to end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other communicable diseases by 2030) I have tried to make healthcare accessible for the most affected rural people. By engaged in home visits where I have been focusing on bringing rehabilitation into the home where I assist in helping the client regain as much independence as possible. This is attempting to provide the client with adequate treatment which will allow improved function, where we can ensure proper community integration and possibly look at how this client can now sustain themselves through vocational rehabilitation at home. This ensures that the client’s health is looked after holistically not only by looking at their symptoms. Home visits are important to address inequalities that are found in the healthcare system where there are reduced human resources to look after people and long and costly clinic trips. Education is done to the whole family where they are educated about the importance of exercise and compliance to medication to reduce the burden of secondary complications. The same health promotion was done at the MR clinic too.
(Gallo images, 2010) (Martin, 2023)
These two images show the extremes of inequalities that people face in the healthcare system in South Africa. This all started during the Apartheid period when racial separation resulted in a health system that was independently run by 400 local authorities. Resulting in poor communication and coordination of these services, (Lackan, 2008). In rural communities, a lot of people face this, especially those with disabilities who receive unequal opportunities in society, education, and health care, (Moodly, 2020). SDG 10 of reducing inequality tries to change this. Research states that those with disabilities have a higher need to access healthcare than the average person, (CDC, 2023). But we understand that rural communities have rough terrain, and the institutions are quite far away. People struggle with going to them, because of the poor healthcare system they do not have assistive technology, like walking frames or wheelchairs. Even if they do they struggle with access as there are no ramps or other modalities to accommodate other disabilities, (Dada et al, 2018). With this in both Zwelibovu and MR clinic, I saw that there are no referral lines between the clinics and the district hospitals. Where you find that a patient with a stroke is released back into the community with no proper written note or referral to the clinic. Where they are now the client ends up not accessing the clinic for continuation of therapy or there are no specialised rehab teams to continue with them at the clinic. My group and I elected to do an OT health promotion with the community caregivers and community health workers, so they can refer those with similar cases, where we go bring therapy into the home. Creating and maintaining referral lines between the district hospitals and clinics together with COC NPO is an important task for me to try and develop. As this will allow the clients requiring specialised equipment for the hospital but struggle to access this facility to have channels that will make it easier for them to receive them. Thus reducing these inequalities the rural people struggle with in the community.
“South Africa has one of the most unequal school systems in the world. Children in the top 200 schools achieve more distinctions in mathematics than children in the next 6,600 schools combined. The playing field must be levelled,”- Sheila Mohamed. This is an indication that the SDG of quality education is not being met. The rural communities struggle the most because the schools are under-resourced and overcrowded with limited amounts of teachers, (Daniel 2024). Evident in MR primary school the teachers struggle with individual attention to those struggling learners, therefore their teaching is not effective, and the child gets lost and starts to present with learning difficulties. Therefore, a rapid assessment form is being developed to give to teachers to help them identify children who will benefit from OT sessions. Where we find the root cause of the child's reduced performance and provide the teacher recommendations to help assist the child. Modifying the way they teach will allow them to tailor their education to the child's developmental level. Parents are also educated on the child's condition and what they can do to adapt and modify in the process of teaching the child at home too, like providing educational games that will assist in making learning fun thus they receive a better-quality education.
SDG 15 of life on land is of vital importance in the rural community. As South Africa boasts one of the highest unemployment rates in the world, (Klasen, 2008). Thus, financial power to purchase food is becoming increasingly challenging. Thus, in the rural community of Zwelibovu a project of sustainable gardening is a way to teach the locals to provide for themselves using the land while following sustainable practices to keep the land useful. This aims to provide a form of leisure participation for the locals, improve physical endurance, and provide a sense of self-worth and meaning. This can be also vocational rehabilitation where they can sell the remaining produce for an income. Thus using the land is sustainable and with safe practices sustaining the ecosystem and maintaining the biodiversity whilst also a way to achieve goal 2 of no hunger as the community will have skills of gardening and being self sufficient.
In conclusion, the path to achieving the SDGs 2,3, 4, 10, and 15, needs a lot of collaborative efforts, good communication, and a strong sense of social justice. By using the strengths of community caregivers, health workers, and educators, we come up with strong referral systems, improve educational practices, and promote sustainable living. By engaging directly with the community and providing healthcare and rehabilitation services in home, we can produce better health outcomes and create a sense of independence among client facing chronic illnesses and disabilities. The use of targeted educational programs for teachers and parents aim to improve the learning experience for children, ensuring that no child is left behind due to resource limitations. In the end, we move to reducing inequalities and following a holistic approach to health, education, and sustainability, we create the way for a future where dignity, opportunity, and collaboration are there for all, creating resilient communities that can get through tough times together.

Know about World No Tobacco Day 2024 -
World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is an annual event organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and celebrated on May 31st to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and to advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. The event also aims to highlight the tobacco industry's negative impact on health and to encourage people worldwide to abstain from tobacco use for at least 24 hours.
Theme for 2024 -
The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2024 is "Grow Food, Not Tobacco." This theme emphasizes the importance of promoting sustainable agriculture and the need to prioritize food production over tobacco farming. It aims to draw attention to the adverse effects of tobacco cultivation on food security and the environment, advocating for a shift towards more beneficial agricultural practices.
Key Objectives -
1.Raising Awareness: Informing the public about the dangers of tobacco use and second-hand smoke, which are major causes of non-communicable diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses.
2.Encouraging Tobacco Cessation: Motivating individuals to quit smoking and providing support and resources to help them do so, such as counseling services, quitlines, and nicotine replacement therapies.
3.Policy Advocacy: Urging governments to implement and enforce tobacco control measures, including higher taxes on tobacco products, bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, and creating smoke-free environments.
4.Supporting Farmers: Encouraging farmers to switch from tobacco to alternative crops, thereby improving their livelihoods and contributing to food security and environmental sustainability.
Importance of the 2024 Theme -
The theme "Grow Food, Not Tobacco" is particularly relevant in the context of global food insecurity and environmental degradation. Tobacco farming depletes soil fertility, requires extensive use of harmful pesticides, and leads to deforestation. By encouraging the cultivation of food crops instead, the campaign addresses multiple issues:
Health: Reducing tobacco use can significantly lower the incidence of tobacco-related diseases, thereby improving public health.
Environment: Shifting from tobacco to food crops can enhance biodiversity, reduce pesticide use, and contribute to more sustainable land use practices.
Economy: Supporting farmers in transitioning to food crops can boost local economies, enhance food security, and provide more stable and sustainable incomes for farming communities.
Conclusion -
World No Tobacco Day 2024, with its theme "Grow Food, Not Tobacco," seeks to create a healthier, more sustainable future by reducing tobacco use and promoting better agricultural practices. It calls for collective action from individuals, communities, governments, and organizations worldwide to make a significant impact on public health, food security, and the environment. By participating in this global initiative, we can work towards a tobacco-free world and a healthier planet.

The Madness Continues: Chinese Scientists Create Mutant Ebola Virus
The following content is sponsored by The Wellness Company.
Apparently, the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic haven’t been learned. Dangerous biolab experiments continue – humanity be damned.

According to the Daily Mail:
Chinese scientists have engineered a virus with parts of Ebola in a lab that killed a group of hamsters. A team of researchers at Hebei Medical University used a contagious disease of livestock and added a protein found in Ebola, which allows the virus to infect cells and spread throughout the human body. The group of hamsters that received the lethal injection ‘developed severe systemic diseases similar to those observed in human Ebola patients,’ including multi-organ failure,’ the study shared.
The results of this study were predictably horrific:
One particularly horrific symptom saw the infected hamsters develop secretions in their eyes, which impaired their vision and scabbed over the surface of the eyeballs.
According to the National Institutes of Health, a decade ago, Ebola ravaged parts of Africa. Ebola has an average fatality rate of 50 percent:
Ebola virus disease, once known by, Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is defined by the iconic hemorrhagic fever, but more common symptoms are non-specific such as fever, malaise, headache, diarrhea, or vomiting. The disease can quickly progress to multi-organ system failure leading to shock followed by death. The case-fatality rate ranges from 25% to 90%; the average case fatality rate is about 50%.
The obvious concern with any of these dangerous biolab experiments is the threat of a lab leak, according to the Daily Mail:
But lab leaks happen, and these incidents could lead to the spread of to those outside of the lab. Experts have confirmed that respiratory viruses – which are [spread] via coughing and sneezing – are more likely to spread widely through a population. Data released this March revealed that lab leak incidents occur every year and included the release of controlled pathogens like tuberculosis and anthrax. There are anywhere from 70 to 100 releases were recorded every year.
Be Prepared
These continuing dangerous experiments are a literal ticking time bomb. It’s not a question of if we will face another pandemic, the question is when.
However, now is not the time to panic, nor is this the time to be complacent – now is the time to be prepared.
