¡It’s opening day! #fashion #Moda #mode #venezuela #valenciavenezuela #talentovenezolano #caracas (at Hotel Intercontinental Venetur) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl8xCLor4rJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

SCP+C Open Call 2020 Awardees: Videos and Panel Discussion
Tumblr media
Tempo falacioso; Superimposiciones botánicas
Sin Cinta Previa + Chuquimarca are proud to present Tempo falacioso; Superimposiciones botánicas, an online video presentation of works by Luíza Bastos Lages, Nancy D. Valladares, and Chucho Ocampo.
Join us for a panel discussion with the artists on Sat. Sept. 26th at 7:30 PM (CST). Please RSVP for the Zoom invitation here.
This online feature was awarded and selected from our juried SCP+C Open Call 2020. This is the first of two screenings from our open call juried by Malia Haines-Stewart and Giselle Mira-Diaz, generously supported by the Propeller Fund.
Tempo falacioso; Superimposiciones botánicas is a selection of video works by artists Luiza Bastos Lages, Chucho Ocampo and Nancy D. Valladares. This program looks at the technologies and infrastructures that sustained the colonial project, disseminated euro-western epistemologies, and transported colonial projects throughout Latin America. By layering archive footage and oral traditions, history is retold through the alchemy of gunpowder, the slow melting of a pillar of ice, and microscopic worlds of botanical images.
The films reveal the crossings of worlds in their respective geographies, and aim to disobey the temporal lines of history as told by a euro-western lens. Paisagens Ficcionais [Fictional Landscapes] is a slow emergence of the commodification of forms of life and their transit across the hemisphere, Castillo unfolds the various geopolitical forces that drive human and more than human migrants in Mexico, and The Density of Breath meditates on botanical exchanges that produced plantation economies and extraction in Latin America. Tempo falacioso; Superimposiciones Botánicas asks the viewers to reflect on the incommensurability between history, representation, memory and anthropocentric paradigms of domination.

The Density of Breath
by Nancy D. Valladares (2020) 13 min 04 sec.
Shot with an electronic microscope,The Density of Breath is a meditation on plant agency, and botanical representation. What does a seed know about the flavor of the atmosphere; about the texture of the air and its currents, about its ebbs and flows, that we do not? Seeds learned to move in the currents of the ocean and the wind, to float on water and air, to become the first stowaways and hitchhikers. In pursuit of plant matter and the expansion of the human visual apparatus, technologies of plant transportation and representation marked a pivotal ecological and cognitive shift.

Paisagens Ficcionais [Fictional Landscapes] by Luíza Bastos Lages (2020) 24 min 23 sec.
Paisagens Fictionais [Fictional Landscapes] interrogates the ephemerality of the contemporary landscape, and its transformation, as a means as well as a product of a hegemonic and fallacious project of modernity: the idea of progress. The work departs from a place in memory, the continuous dilapidation of mining landscapes of a stretch of the Iron Quadrangle, one of the major mineral provinces in the world, located in Minas Gerais, Brazil, the place where I grew up. The piece goes about the volatility of the landscape in relation to politics of extraction and its translation into capital, geographically transferred and realized elsewhere in the globe. Through the flow of capital, the landscape also moves, traded by means of their mined fragments.
By dealing with the commodification of the landscape and its flux in form of capital, the work seeks to elucidate how this exploratory process continues to structure the world in accumulating centers and degraded outskirts, since, in the dominant paradigm of progress, the sustenance of inequality is the foremost condition for its continuity, not a side effect to be overcome. The film Paisagens Ficcionais was produced from an interweaving of footage produced by the artist and archival footage produced by United States American Research Institutions about Brazil, as well as archival home footage.

Expect People to be Exhausted by Chucho Ocampo (2020) 13 min 19 sec.
Castillo is an artistic research exercise that superimposes information between systems that have no apparent or physical manifestation of interdependence but are capable of connecting despite borders. The research revolves around the movement of human and non human bodies and their relations with ephemeral structures and displays of communication as well as how ideas travel and relate to them. The research exercise explores and superimposes a thread of traveling ideas that deal with displacement and overlapping of symbols, ideologies, cultural practices and language.
About the artists:
Luíza Bastos Lages (b. 1988) is an artist and architect from Itabirito, Brazil. Luíza holds a professional degree in Architecture and Urban Planning from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil (2013) and a Master of Science in Art, Culture and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2020). Her most recent projects poetically address extraction and transnational privatization of forms of life merely seen as material resources; as well as the tentative erasure, by the current Brazilian government, of bodies that challenge predefined social expectations.
Nancy Dayanne Valladares (b. 1991) is an interdisciplinary artist from Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Her work traces the colonial legacies and agricultural histories of Honduras through the lens of human and non-human migration. She received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Master of Science in Art, Culture and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2020). Her work has been exhibited at The Art Institute of Chicago, Sullivan Galleries, SUGS Gallery X, ExFest Film Festival, The Research House for Asian Art, Columbia College, and Roman Susan Gallery in Chicago.
Chucho (Jesús) Ocampo Aguilar (Mexico, b. 1991) is an architect and artist working in the intersection of art, architecture and technology. Chucho is currently a Partner in dérive LAB, an art, architecture and urbanism firm where he works as Creative Director, particularly with projects related to housing, urban design, public space interventions and cultural management. Chucho is co-founder of BEMA, a cultural center in the heart of Querétaro, México; dedicated to Art, Architecture and the City. He is currently a first year SMACT candidate of the Art Culture and Technology program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Border Patrol does more to rescue, identify missing migrants
Border Patrol does more to rescue, identify missing migrants
FALFURRIAS, Texas —  A U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent scrutinized video of a dying migrant on her cellphone, trying to match the background to the ranch she was searching for his body last month. “Can I see the picture real quick, the background?” another agent asked. Agent Nancy Balogh held out her phone. In the two minutes of video, 25-year-old Yoel Nieto Valladares lay on the sandy…

Reporter on Katie Hill scandal promotes GOP candidates for her seat
Van Laar’s views, like RedState’s leanings, are no secret: She’s worked in Republican politics and the site is conservative, as is its owner, Salem Media Group. But Van Laar’s shift from reporting on Hill, and publishing what some have deemed “revenge porn,” to promoting Republicans for Hill’s old job is a blurring of roles that would be unacceptable in mainstream newsrooms.
In the days leading up to the 2018 election, Van Laar wrote an op-ed on why she supported Knight in his race against Hill, and in July, she praised a Republicanwho at the time was planning to run against Hill in 2020. “Hanging out with our future Congresswoman Suzette Valladares today!” she wrote, along with hashtags such as “#runsuzetterun” and #savecalifornia.”
Van Laar did not respond to a Twitter direct message request to discuss her coverage. Multiple representatives from Townhall Media, which oversees RedState, did not respond to phone and email requests.
Hill’s swift political downfall highlights the way in which allegations and images that might not meet the bar for publication in traditional newsrooms, the one-time media gatekeepers, can find a wide audience online and spark a scandal covered by mainstream reporters.
Hill, who is bisexual, admitted last week to having an “inappropriate” relationship with a female campaign staffer, but has denied having a sexual relationship with legislative director Graham Kelly, the latter of which would violate House ethics rules and became thesubject of an investigation.
Hill’s estranged husband, Kenny Heslep, accused her having a relationship with Kelly, as RedState’s Miranda Morales wrote on Oct 10. Just over a week later, Van Laar reported that Hill had been in a long-term “throuple” relationship with her husband and the female campaign staffer, in a piece which included a photo of a naked Hill brushing the hair of a woman whose face is intentionally blurred.
The photo, which spread online and on social media, dramatically increased pressure on Hill, who said she decided to resign so that “the good people who supported me will no longer be subjected to the pain inflicted by my abusive husband and the brutality of hateful political operatives who seem to happily provide a platform to a monster who is driving a smear campaign built around cyber exploitation.”
While many Democrats, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, endorsed her decision to leave Congress on the grounds of having had a relationship with a campaign staffer, some others depicted her as a victim of cyber-bullying by RedState and her estranged husband.
Brianna Wu, a video game developer who lost a bid for Congress in 2018 and is running again in 2020, tweeted Monday that conservative outlets that published private photos of Hill “enabled her ex-husband’s abuse.”
“Hill was exploited by her abusive ex-husband who used nude photos of her to smear her,” Wu added. “No one would argue that it’s proper to have a consensual relationship w/ a subordinate. That doesn’t change the fact that Hill is a victim of revenge porn.”
Lawfare managing editor Quinta Jurecic wrote that the Hill photograph on RedState appeared to be “the first instance in which a politically aligned publication — or, indeed, any publication — has released nonconsensual pornography depicting a politician of the opposing party affiliation.” And that, she wrote, “is an ugly line to have crossed.”
In her RedState piece that included the photograph,Van Laar justified sharing this “information obtained from multiple confidential sources” because Hill was now a member of Congress.
“It is this writer’s view that events that occur within a marriage or affairs that lead to its demise should be kept between the parties involved and are not the business of the general public,” Van Laar wrote. “When those events or affairs occur within one of the parties’ workplace, though, and that workplace is the United States Congress, the public should know about them as they determine that elected official’s fitness to serve.”
Van Laar noted that RedState didn’t publish other “intimate photographs of the women.”
The Oct. 18 piece also included text messages posted on Heslep’s now-deleted Facebook account in which he is purportedly speaking to a friend about Hill having a relationship with Kelly, the former finance director who worked as Hill’s legislative director in Congress.
Hill denied having an improper relationship with Kelly to POLITICO on Oct. 22 and said her “abusive husband seems determined to try to humiliate me.”
“I am disgusted that my opponents would seek to exploit such a private matter for political gain,” she said. “This coordinated effort to try to destroy me and people close to me is despicable and will not succeed.”
Hill said she notified the Capitol Police to investigate how “intimate photos of me and another individual were published by Republican operatives on the internet without my consent.” Hill later threatened legal action against The Daily Mail, which published the same photo of Hill and the staffer, albeit without the woman’s face blurred, along with others, including one in which Hill is nude and holding a bong.
The Daily Mail also suggested Hill had a tattoo representing Nazi imagery, a claim her lawyers described as “false and defamatory.”
On Oct. 24, RedState’s Joe Cunningham accused news outlets of either ignoring his site’s reporting or spinning coverage in defense of Hill.
“It is because of that hostility to places like RedState, where we do not hide our partisan lean, that actual, real journalism can so often get ignored or butchered,” Cunningham wrote. “It is journalistic malpractice to pretend that the story Jen broke is anything other than how she has covered it.”
POLITICO first reported Sunday night that Hill planned to resign, which she later announced in a letter, saying it was “the best thing for my constituents, my community and our country.”
Pelosi responded with a statement saying, “Congresswoman Katie Hill came to Congress with a powerful commitment to her community and a bright vision for the future, and has made a great contribution as a leader of the Freshman Class.”
“She has acknowledged errors in judgment that made her continued service as a Member untenable,” Pelosi continued. “We must ensure a climate of integrity and dignity in the Congress, and in all workplaces.”

In Search of a Homeland
October 30–November 22 Reception: Thursday, October 30, 4:00–6:00 p.m. Gallery X, 280 S. Columbus Dr., room 113
In Search of a Homeland presents a collection of work that evokes nostalgia, feelings of displacement, and stories of bygone times. Utilizing symbols of their respective cultures, artists Liz Vitlin (BFA 2016), Nancy Valladares (BFA 2015), and Vivienne Luo Wang (BFA 2015) connect personal histories and explore the tensions within their own cultural backgrounds. Through photography and sculpture, the artists straddle two cultures and romanticize the past, exploring a universal feeling of homeland within the gallery.

birthed on a river bank
child of water and clay
sings to the sun
small child
sleeps next to the moon
starlight kiss on her fingers
a star died on the day of her birth
a million years late to its funeral
tiny snake wraps around her wrist
and licks her pulse
her hair combed with bone and oil
fingers covered in achiote
mama sings to her
small child, birthed from the last sun
tell me of the ones who ate the first age.
in your other life,
did you meet the mothers that came before us?
mashed up corn and mother’s milk
covers her cheek
falls inside her bellybutton
hair of midnight
beloved skin
small child,
eats the mountain
spits the sea

So we learned to forget ourselves, gradually, through language.
“She-her has always conveyed the idea of a personal and gender-specific voice. In order to be taken more seriously, she is therefore bound to dye this voice universal, a tint that can only be obtained through words like man, mankind, he-him. ”- Trinh T. Minh Ha from Woman, Native, Other

the words of water have no sound, but they are the most dear to me.
They sing the songs of the rivers and the rain and sometimes of the clouds.
They have no sound but they are not mute. They do not need a tongue to become language.
They were spoken by the plumed serpent and by the river spirits eons ago.
the words of water can only be understood by that secret spot beneath your ribs, where you can listen without ears.
Where you can translate the words of english into honey and fire.
The words of water can be heard when the sea calls to you; during balmy evenings and Midwestern storms.
They are heard by the hairs on the back of your neck and your arms.
You spoke them in your mother’s womb; were enveloped by their warmth. They flowed from the string that connected your mother’s body to your own, and later from her breast into your mouth.
The words of water saved me, when I was drowning in a language that is not my own. -nv
