And those rarest of creatures...
My Top 10 Favorite Canon ENDGAME OTPs
(and I realize some of these will be a surprise because I haven't posted that much about them but... well, when everything is perfect and nothing hurts there's less need for venting... also a bunch of them don't align with my Tumblr heavy periods or precede them entirely, so...)
1. Parker and Hardison - Leverage
The absolute sweetest couple maybe ever. The way Hardison just... loves Parker, without ultimatums or impatience. Just there once she's ready to meet his feelings with her own. And Parker, knowing she's developed feelings for... 'pretzels' and admitting it in the only way she can initially. So good.
---
2. Aneela and Kendry - Killjoys
You give me two amoral queens, have them be evil and immortal, and have them fall in love? I was a goner from the word go. Giving them a sci-fi kid just added fuel to the fire.
---
3. Jo and Zane - Eureka
I shipped the 1.0 version too. But when they accidentally erased the original timeline and had Jo remembering being in love and nearly engaged and having Zane not? Damn. Talk about angsty ship bait.
---
4. Kensi and Deeks - NCIS: Los Angeles
Sunshine and gunpowder. Freaking made for each other and doing a proper piney slow burn. My jam.
---
5. Magnus and Alec - Shadowhunters
I mean. Do you think I could resist a grand wedding crash with a 'if your son wants me gone he's going to have to say it to me himself' with the widely grinning sister of the miserable groom going 'I invited him'? What am I, made of stone? (War of Hearts is tattooed on the inside of my eardrums).
---
6. Nico and Karolina - Runaways
Okay. But like, even beyond the flawless imagery of Gothic Witch Queen and Royal Heir of Sunshine and Rainbows... they were so captivating. So ready to sacrifice anything for each other's happiness. I love them your honor.
---
7. Xiao Lanhua and Dongfang Qingcang - Love Between Fairy and Devil
"Everything in this world is fate. Only love is not fate."
Talk about ripping out my heart. In a story built around two people more trapped by fate than anyone, they save each other by doing the one thing fate has no say over.
(I usually prefer my romances to be the B and C plots, but these two? They are the exception that proves the rule. This whole show is their love story and I was spellbound for 36 episodes straight).
---
8. Shawn and Jules - Psych
So. Much. Pining. And the inclusion of the cruelest 'I love you' known to man, because who doesn't love a good 'I've been shot, and the guy who shot me just let me call my girlfriend but I'm using the call to give out clues about how to find me, so I'm pretending you're Abigail, but he's listening and he wants me to tell you that I love you and I know... think... suspect... that saying it will hurt you, but I don't have a choice and I'm so sorry'.
---
9. Nikita and Michael - Nikita
They both know what it feels like to lose someone you love. Which is why the way them kinda having at least a scene a season where one of them thinks the other just got killed is brutal. But I live for the looks on their faces when they figure out they're wrong.
---
10. Korra and Asami - Legend of Korra
What's more fun than falling in love with the ex boyfriend's ex girlfriend? Nothing. They got me to stand up and pay attention right quick once I realized where this was going (and the finale was how I started watching reaction videos... it made me so happy watching everyone else cry, cheer and squee too)
#pardison#parker x hardison#green queens#aneela x kendry#jo x zane#densi#malec#deanoru#xlh x dfqc#moon orchid#shules#shawn x juliet#mikita#nikita x michael#korrasami#shipping#terapsina's shipping rambles#terapsina rambles#otp: pretzels#otp: you're my tether#otp: jo x zane#otp: sunshine and gunpowder#otp: i'm all for effort#otp: goth witch and alien princess#otp: in a thousand identical orchids i will find you in an instant#otp: jules x shawn#otp: give me the damn glock#otp: just the two of us

Coming up on a year since NCIS: Los Angeles’ swan song, Daniela Ruah pulls double duty this Monday, April 15, during CBS‘ NCIS line-up.
First up, Ruah reprises her role as Special Agent Kensi Deeks (via an MTAC video conference) during the NCIS franchise’s milestone 1,000th episode, which airs at 9/8c as an episode of NCIS. Then at 10 pm that night, you have the NCIS: Hawai’i episode “The Next Thousand,” which Ruah directed. (Ruah previously directed a half-dozen NCIS: LA episodes, as well as the recent NCIS episode about a kidnapped fiancé.)
TVLine hopped on the phone with Ruah to ask our No. 1 burning question about her NCIS “1,000” cameo, and then talk up her helming of the NCIS: Hawai’i episode about a U.S. Army SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape) training exercise on the Big Island that turns extremely deadly.
TVLINE | First of all, because Kensi dials into MTAC from her car during the NCIS franchise’s 1,000th episode, I need to know: Did you film your scene while you were in a drop-off line? [Laughs] No, I actually filmed that while I was directing in Hawaii. They were like, “Can we fit this into your schedule?” and we were like, “Well, we can’t make it look like I’m in Hawaii.” So, we had to go back and look at pictures of what Kensi’s car looked like to try and get something as similar as possible, to look like Kensi is in her car. I couldn’t even remember, to be honest with you, what brand she drove — I was so immersed in the Hawaii episode – but listen, I wouldn’t have it any other way. To be invited to be a part of the 1,000th episode was such an honor. It’s too big of a deal.
TVLINE | Turning to NCIS: Hawai’i, the episode they gave you to direct is crazy intense. Once you saw what it was going to be, were you charged up? First of all, the fact that all three showrunners wrote it, Jan [Nash], Matt [Bosack] and Chris [Silber], that right there tells you that there’s probably going to be, you know, a little more craziness, or it’ll be more out-of-the-box. I don’t know why, but I always perceive that when a showrunner writes something, they get extra creative.
TVLINE | I think about the specific challenges that this episode must have presented you as director, and not only is almost all of it outdoors, but it’s in the jungle. Did you have to learn anything new in that respect? Yeah — wear long pants and long sleeves, and bring mosquito spray. [Laughs] No, every time I direct something, even if it was still on [NCIS: LA], you’re always learning new things. Here I’m working with a new crew, with a new director of photography, so everybody’s going to teach you new things. Even stunts — when Tennant gets [spoiler], they said, “Here are things that we could do…,” which then allowed me to get creative with the way it was shot.
TVLINE | My next question was actually going to ask, where was that area of volcanic rock? Because it made for some stunning shots. That’s a place called the Lānaʻi Lookout — and there’s water right behind those rocks. I mean, we were literally on the ocean, so we had to adjust the camera angles to hide the water. Like, you shoot one inch to the left or to the right, and all of a sudden you’re exposing the fact that you’re actually not in this barren, isolated area. That’s the strategy and the magic and the figuring out that I have to do as a director.
TVLINE | The episode opens closes with some nice scenes between Tennant and Kate (played by Tori Anderson), which is a character dynamic the fans enjoy. What were you looking to capture there? First of all, [Vanessa and Tori] are both absolute sweethearts, and they have such amazing chemistry in real life, so it’s not a hard thing to do scenes with them. But yeah, you get this contrast of a character, Tennant, who is experienced and can improvise and who has kind of “seen it all,” versus a newer agent who’s really eager to do well, but she’s super by-the-book.
TVLINE | The Sam/Kate scenes are also interesting because — and this didn’t dawn on me until Kate mentioned it herself — they hadn’t really interacted yet. Exactly. Yeah, I love that conversation that Kate and Sam have at the desk when she’s just kind of struggling to figure things out, and he tells a little story of his own past and his own experience….
TVLINE | Sam specifically shares with Kate some advice he once got from an agent “much wiser” than him. I tried Googling the line he says, but came up empty. Was it from any NCIS: LA episode? Maybe it was Hetty…? I know that there is one Easter egg [in the episode] from Gibbs, and so maybe the other one was Hetty. Maybe. I’m not sure!

NCIS is gearing up to ring in a special milestone with the April 15th episode as the franchise reaches 1,000 episodes overall. But how does it all break down? Below, we’re revealing how each of the current and former spinoffs contributed to the flagship’s upcoming installment.
Eddy Chen/CBS
NCIS (464 EPISODES)
Airdates: September 23, 2003–present
The Brief: “What makes NCIS so damn special?” That question is furiously put to Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) by his estranged son, Jared (Spence D. Moore II), in the NCIS franchise’s 1,000th episode. Launched in 2003, NCIS has four spinoffs and two highly anticipated shows coming — NCIS: Origins and a Michael Weatherly–Cote de Pablo project nicknamed NCIS: Europe.
The younger Vance makes his query when the two cross paths at his mom’s gravesite. Vance’s wife was killed by terrorists in 2013, and Jared can’t comprehend why his dad is so dedicated to a job that put their family in danger.
Make that puts: Vance is soon in peril and the team under attack by an enemy from the past. “We’ve heard this baddie’s name before,” exec producer Steven D. Binder told us at a celebration on the set. “As in some of our better episodes, our people risk their lives for each other. We pay homage to the O.G. NCIS and the other series.”
Guest star alert: Assisting via satellite feed are Los Angeles agent Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) and Hawai‘i boss Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey). The cavalry also includes a longtime NCIS ally, former FBI agent Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano).
In a scene we observed, forensic scientist Kasie (Diona Reasonover) reviews evidence with Torres (Wilmer Valderrama). Jared, desperate to help, has slept there overnight. “Kasie connects with Jared and becomes a mentor in a way,” Reasonover says.
Valderrama hints it all gets explosive, promising “a big, big set piece; all of us are involved.” And one agent does something new: “We see McGee in a position you’ve never seen him in in 20 years,” spills Sean Murray. Says Gary Cole, who plays team leader Alden Parker, “We witness some fragility of what this job entails, the obstacles that could pop up unexpectedly.”
Skip Bolen/CBS
NCIS: New Orleans (155 EPISODES)
Airdates: September 23, 2014–May 23, 2021
The Brief: The Big Easy’s brassy, buoyant spirit infused the franchise’s third title, shot memorably on location. In fact, lead Scott Bakula once told TV Guide Magazine about a great only-in-NOLA moment: “being in the middle of the Mississippi River, captaining a tugboat!” His honest boss Dwayne Pride was based on a real New Orleans lawman, retired naval investigator D’Wayne Swear, who served as a consultant.
Daniel Asher Smith/Paramount+
NCIS: Sydney (8 EPISODES)
Airdates: November 10, 2023–present
The Brief: “In Australia, everything can kill you,” executive producer Morgan O’Neill cracked to TV Guide Magazine when the Oz-set new kid on the block arrived last year. Down Under has proved plenty perilous for tough NCIS Special Agent Captain Michelle Mackey (Olivia Swann) and her savvy partner-in-crime-fighting, Australian Federal Police Sergeant JD Dempsey (Todd Lasance). After locking horns, the American and the Aussie warmed to each other. But all may be undone thanks to JD going rogue in the finale — crikey! Good news for fans left in suspense: Sydney was just renewed!
Karen Neal/CBS
NCIS: Hawai‘i (50 EPISODES)
Airdates: September 20, 2021–present
The Brief: NCIS said aloha to the franchise’s third offshoot and first female special agent in charge, hardworkingdivorced mom Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey), in 2021. “I feel like I’m in a movie: Platoon meets Jurassic Park,” Lachey told TV Guide Magazine at the time. Before shooting on lush Oahu began, production held a traditional Hawaiian blessing. The island culture has defined the series, with unique cases involving paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys) and Pearl Harbor survivors. Tennant’s team, a blend of mainland transplants and locals like surfer Kai Holman (Alex Tarrant), has welcomed other NCIS franchise agents for joint ops. And now L.A.’s Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) is on the island!
Ron P. Jaffe/CBS
NCIS: Los Angeles (323 EPISODES)
Airdates:September 22, 2009–May 21, 2023
The Brief: For a thrilling 14 seasons, the first spinoff’s Office of Special Projects hit the sunny streets of L.A. to chase down a rap sheet of baddies from Russian mobsters to psychotic serial killers — even an office mole. Under the management of no-nonsense Henrietta “Hetty” Lange (Linda Hunt), ex–Navy SEAL Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) and loner Grisha “G” Callen (Chris O’Donnell) were special agents with banter as quick as their draw. But both had endured pain: for Sam, a wife murdered by a terrorist; for G, a rocky childhood in foster care and a brutal secret program to train kids in spycraft.
Fans rooted for romance between team members Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) and Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen), whose entertaining undercover missions included posing as cult members and suburban marrieds. The cast was equally tight. O’Donnell says, “The first day on set, the original NCIS cast came in. They were like a family. I remember looking at Dani and LL thinking, ‘Are we ever going to get as close?’ Sure enough, we did.”

Our heroes: Keep droning on about Drona.
What important things did we learn about: Callen: In a roundabout way, asks Sam to be his best man. Sam: In a roundabout way, says yes t being Callen’s best man. Kensi: Absent. Deeks: See Kensi. Fatima: Hacks into the Drona files with Shyla. Rountree: Willing to be shot at to protect Sam and Fatima. Kilbride: Leaving after work to see his son.
What not so important things did we learn about: Callen: Worshipped by Castor. Sam: Thinks Castor getting knocked out twice in three months is a bad look. Kensi: See Deeks. Deeks: Absent. Fatima: Likes Rountree with Summer. Rountree: Runs after school buses, bad guys and through sand castles. Kilbride: Hired Shyla because Shyla remembers everything.
Where in the world is Henrietta Lange? Seemingly in a small town on the border of Turkey and Syria warning Drona subjects that they are in danger.
Who's down with OTP: Kensi and Deeks are off doing family things. Rountree and Summer seems to be doing well.
Who's down with BrOTP: Callen popped the question – will Sam be his best man? Callen has a side buddy in Castor.
Fashion review: Callen wears a green, blue and yellow plaid shirt. A long-sleeve black tee for Sam. Fatima wears a tan leather field coat over a black turtleneck. A pale purple fleece sweatshirt for Rountree. Kilbride has on a dark brown three-piece suit with a white dress shirt and a brown and gold tie.
Music: Not today!
Any notable cut scene: Not today!
Quote: Shyla: “Oh, uh, your ride to the airport just pulled up outside.” Kilbride: “I thought I told you to cancel that flight.” Shyla: “Did you? Oh, I-I don't remember.” Kilbride: “You remember everything. That's why I hired you.” Shyla: “Do you still want me to cancel it? Bear in mind, it is nonrefundable and I know how much you hate wasting money. Not to mention missing an opportunity to see your son after all these years...” Kilbride: “All right, all right, I'm leaving. Remind me to fire you when I get back.”
Anything else: A gentleman is out walking his dog in a small park area surrounded by businesses. The dog, Rebel, starts barking and jumps into a bush. Returning to his owner, Rebel gifts the man a dead squirrel, which was not on the man’s breakfast meal plan. The man’s phone rings – it is an older, flip phone. A text message reads “DHRISHTADYUMNA”. The man breaks the phone in half and tosses his phone, causing Rebel to play fetch. While the dog is away, a person wearing a ski mask shoots the dog owner in the back of the dead. Rebel returns to his fallen owner and sits right next to him because dogs are the best.
At a table by a coffee shop, Fatima, Rountree, Jordyn and FBI Agent Summer Morehurst are chatting. Fatima is teasing Rountree for yelling “Federal Agents” as they were trailing a suspect. The suspect ran (because he’s obviously watched the show). “Tree” caught the guy after a 10-minute chase. Jordyn is all in for the Rountree mocking. Rountree always liked to show off how fast he was. He’d forget to give Jordyn her school lunch on purpose and then run alongside the school bus to give it to her like Keanu Reeves. And she hated his lunches – avocados and bean sprouts. She was 14 and didn’t want to eat that stuff back then. Summer says she’s not interested in eating it now. Rountree says it all worked out for the best. Jordyn aced her MCATs and is on her way to medical school. Summer starts mocking “Treefontaine” when she gets a call – FBI wants to see her. Jordyn is off to class as well.
Shyla is giving a not paying attention Admiral Kilbride notice about a meeting with his British and Australian counterparts. Still not paying attention. She would be willing to go. Still not paying attention. Kensi and Deeks are out because Rosa’s aunt had a stroke. Still not paying attention. Office minutiae like the security system doing a reboot and Agent Castor’s performance review aren’t capturing the Admiral’s attention either. Shyla mentions a radioactive group of pubescent turtles foiling and armed robbery at the Santa Monica Pier and nothing. Shyla sees a suitcase and realizes that he’s flying up to San Francisco to see his son. She will arrange transport to the airport at 7PM but he wants to leave at 7:30PM – he’s not much of an airport guy. With spring break, Shyla recommends the earlier departure time but the Admiral promises her he’ll be fine. Eventually he relents but warns Shyla that if he is stuck with a “posse of frat boys you will never hear the end of it.” She thinks that would be a great story. As Shyla leaves, the Admiral wants a BOLO on the turtles and their giant rat leader – can’t have mutant vigilantes running around.
Sam walks in to the bullpen, greeting Callen. On Sam’s desk is a printout of a man in a tuxedo. Callen explains it is the tuxedo Anna, sorry, he and Anna, want Sam to wear to the wedding. Sam thinks he can dress himself. Callen brings up Anna’s, his and Anna’s color palate for the wedding. The tux is just for Sam. “Is this your way of asking me to be your best man?” Callen thought Sam being the best man was a given. Sam’s not so sure. Callen has been spending quality time with Castor – they had some drinks and dinner after Castor was knocked out by Miraslava. Sam notes that Castor worships Callen, even dresses like him. Castor arrives, dressed similarly to Callen. Callen breaks down and asks if Sam would be his best man. Of course, Sam replies but he hates the tux. Callen agrees.
Shyla walks down the stairs. Callen asks if they have a case. She replies “you tell me” as she brings them up to Ops. Once in Ops, she launches all the security protocols that lock the door, shut the shutters and turn down the lights. She was sent two encrypted files through a DOD top secret/special compartmented information channel, JWICS. The first file is the driver’s license for the man the park – John Jenkins. He’s the CEO for a software company. The second file is the ID card of an FBI Analyst, Patrick Hertel. Both men were found dead that morning. Hertel was killed in his backyard, Jenkins in the park. There were numbers with the file – eight, 11 and 22. Maybe August 11, 2022.
Callen isn’t interested in figuring out what eight, 11 and 22 mean. JWICS files are sent by known people. Who sent the file? Shyla doesn’t know, it came from a SCIF on the border of Turkey and Syria, the town of Al-Rai. It was Hetty’s last known location, who else would send cryptic clues. Shyla seems excited –“are you talking about who I think you’re talking about?” Callen confirms – Hetty.
In the Admiral’s office, Callen makes the case that to Kilbride that the JWICS file came from Hetty. The Admiral wants to know why she would send the names for two men and some random numbers. It isn’t an urgent message, it is a top secret butt dial according to the Admiral. He’s checked – the SCIF was closed months ago. Callen thinks Hetty could have routed the JWICS through the SCIF but if she did that, why didn’t she identify herself the Admiral asks. Maybe Hetty thinks JWICS is compromised according to Callen. More being a pain in the ass according to Kilbride. Callen wants to investigate the victims to see if there is anything there. Since Hetty bailed Kilbride out with the Simon Williams case, Callen can investigate as long as he stays in his lane – stay away from the official investigations.
Fatima and Rountree show up at Hertel’s home, which is covered with police tape. They start to work on a story to get involved with the case when they see Summer working the case. She comes to see Rountree and Fatima, who think there is a connection between Hertel’s killing and an NCIS investigation into John Jenkins. Summer starts asking questions and Rountree drops “national security”. Since Rountree and Fatima can’t share their info on Jenkins, which is none other than Callen and Sam are investigating what Hetty sent, Summer can’t working with them. When they can share, so can she. Hertel is FBI – they’re working for one of their own.
At the park area, Callen learns from LAPD that all the cameras were down due to routine maintenance when Jenkins was walking his dog. Callen also shares that Summer is working the Hertel case. Sam thinks it was a robbery – no wallet, no keys, no phone and the killer took away the shell casings. LAPD found half the phone in Rebel’s mouth. Callen gives Shyla a call. She has not found a link between Jenkins and Hertel yet.
Looking into Jenkins, his start up tech company has one employee – Jenkins. They haven’t created a product in the last five years. Jenkins and his company have been doing very well, despite offering no products. He’s likely laundering money. Asked about family, Shyla tells Callen and Sam that Jenkins was adopted and his adopted parents are long dead. Turning back to the crime scene, if the dog found one half of the phone, Sam would like to see if he could find the other half.
Back at the FBI crime scene, Rountree sees an older couple arrive and go right under the police tape. Fatima is on the phone. Rountree calls for Summer, who is a bit embarrassed. She asks about the older couple – they are Hertel’s adopted parents. An arriving Fatima, who was on the phone hears adopted and notes that Jenkins was also adopted. Summer isn’t impressed until Fatima tells her both men were shot in the back of the head to make it look like a robbery. Summer never told them how Hertel was killed. NCIS is now part of the FBI crime scene.
Callen and Sam talk about Callen setting a date but Anna is giving him time to find Hetty. Sam hopes this is the case that gets them to Hetty. Callen doesn’t believe that. If Hetty wanted to be found, Hetty would be found. She would tell them where to find her. Callen wants to get married and it is unfair to make Anna wait so long. Sam is looking forward to his best man speech – he has a lot of wisdom to share. Callen thinks he’s heard most of Sam’s wisdom but the wisdom is for Anna, who needs to know what she’s really getting herself into. Callen is having second thoughts about Castor. The dog finds the other part of the phone.
As the Admiral arrives in Ops, Shyla has an update about eight, 11 and 22. Both Jenkins and Hertel went through the LA foster care system. They are both single, in their 40’s and both had government jobs. Hertel is with the FBI, Jenkins is an NSA Analyst. He’s not in most common databases for the NSA. Shyla learned about his NSA role through some friends in Washington. Shyla is about to call this in to Callen and Sam but the Admiral wants her to way. He needs her to pull some files instead.
Hertel was watering his plants when his killer walked up behind him and fired one shot into his head. There was no cartridges left behind, just like the Jenkins crime scene. Summer apologizes for stonewalling NCIS. Fatima says they would have likely done the same if the roles were reversed. Summer doesn’t understand the connection between the two killings.
Fatima gets a call from Shyla, who asks if Hertel has a birthmark on his back. A little reluctantly, Fatima asks Summer to pull up Hertel’s shirt. There is a rather large birthmark on his back. The Admiral, with Shyla, wants her to call Callen. When Callen answers, he starts a sit-rep for Shyla but the Admiral stops things. Eight, 11 and 22 are people, not numbers. Hertel and Jenkins were eight and 22 from the Drona Project, “your alma mater Agent Callen.” Callen has a flashback to his time with Drona.
The Hertel-Jenkins cases are now joint FBI-NCIS investigations. Shyla is told by Kilbride to share everything they have on the case except Hetty’s involvement. Since Hetty’s involvement was speculation anyway, Shyla wasn’t going to share it. With subjects eight and 22 accounted for, who is subject 11? That is Leah Novak, who Callen contacted in the prior year. Callen is trying to find Novak now.
Callen calls Leah who doesn’t want to talk to him. She is walking through a really sketchy looking indoor parking lot. There is a team of masked men following her. Sam tries to get Leah to listen to him but the masked men open fire. Shyla, who was monitoring the phone call is able to trace Leah’s location to a Mid-City parking garage.
In the garage, Callen and Sam find an empty shopping bag with wrapped up money inside. Callen sees a badly wounded Leah, who says “14” before losing consciousness.
Returning to Ops, Fatima and Rountree are told by Shyla that Leah is in surgery. With someone targeting Drona subject, Callen could be in danger. Rountree disagrees – Hetty would have warned Callen in her JWICS communications if he was in trouble. The Admiral arrives, warning Rountree not to read too much into anything Hetty does. There is another Drona subject who may be danger – number 14. The Admiral wants Shyla to cancel is flight to San Francisco to see his son. As he leaves, Shyla tells Rountree and Fatima to go to the gadget area to study Jenkins’s phone. When she knows who number 14 is, she’ll update them.
There was brass left behind at the Leah’s shooting which means she likely hit at least two of her assailants. Callen found a go-bag in Leah’s car with water, MREs and a satellite phone. She knew she was in danger. Sam thinks the same of Jenkins – that’s likely why he tossed his phone. Callen thinks Pembrook is behind the killings – Callen found him and is now cleaning up what’s left behind of Drona.
While Rountree is sweet talking Summer, Fatima is working on Jenkins’s phone. Once in, Rountree is off his phone and working with Fatima. The “DHRISHTADYUMNA” text message is the name of a Hindu warrior who killed his teacher Drona. There are contacts in the phone – Hertel and Leah Novak are there. So is an Anthony Beltran, a former Army Ranger turned history professor. Fatima sends his address to Callen and Sam.
As Callen and Sam pull up outside of Beltran’s home, Beltran is putting a duffle bag into his trunk. When Callen and Sam try to speak to Beltran, Beltran runs. Callen makes things worse by yelling “federal agents” while Sam gets in his car to cut Beltran off. Beltran starts shooting at Callen, who promises they are not there to hurt Beltran. “Leah sent us.” Beltran is talked into putting his gun down. Callen introduces himself as Special Agent Grisha Callen, subject 17. He assures Beltran he’s safe.
In the boat shed, Beltran is in interrogation while Callen and Sam in the main room. The duffle bag in Beltran’s truck had MREs, cash, burner phones. He also got the same text message sent to Jenkins before Jenkins was killed. Callen wonders who sent the text message and Hetty earns a message. Callen isn’t pleased – this is Hetty training an agent, people are being murdered.
Shyla pops up on the screen. There was one vehicle seen on security/traffic cams at the Jenkins/Hertel/Leah shootings. Backtracking with Kaleidoscope, Shyla traced the vehicle to a building downtown. Rountree and Fatima are going to the building and Sam will meet them. Callen wonders why he’s not going but Sam wants answers from Beltran. Callen is the best person to get the answers.
Callen starts to question Beltran, who won’t sit on the wrong side of the table right away, wanting to stand instead. Beltran eventually sits. As an alibi, Beltran says he was home when Jenkins and Hertel were killed. Callen asks about the text message. Beltran was preparing a lesson – he teaches ancient history – and missed the message when it was sent. Once he saw it, however, he called Leah. Leah told him about Jenkins and Hertel. Beltran put his phone in his garbage disposal, packed his things and was going to hit the road when Callen and Sam drove up.
Beltran thought Callen and Sam were working for “him” – Howard Pembrook. Beltran shows Callen scars on his arm from Pembrook’s abuse. Jenkins, Hertel, Leah and Beltran started working together a year ago, after Callen told Leah about Pembrook. They wanted to take him down with lawsuits. There was talk about bringing Callen in but the men in the group were angry Callen lied to Leah. Beltran believes Pembrook found out about them and now he’s having them killed. Beltran wants to see Leah – they are “very close.”
With Summer’s FBI team 30-minutes out, Sam, Rountree and Fatima in tactical gear go into the downtown building. The vehicle has not returned to the location. This is their best chance to scope out the building. Sam breaks down the door. It is a warehouse with huge computer servers, a desk, file cabinets. While Fatima and Shyla try to get into the server, Rountree finds a photo of Callen on the wall from when he was in Pembrook’s garden.
Callen shows Beltran the photo and explains he was trying to confront Pembrook about the past. Pembrook was fine. Beltran is interested in what was in the building where Sam, Fatima and Rountree are. He’s also furious at Callen for going to see Pembrook. Everything bad that’s happened started when Callen met Pembrook. If this was true, Callen asks, why didn’t Pembrook go after him? Beltran talks about the lawsuit being a bigger threat. Castor appears – the doctor says Beltran can see Leah now. In Leah’s room, she’s on a ventilator. Beltran is holding Leah’s hand, saying Pembrook must pay.
As Fatima and Shyla get access to the server, the previously opened files pop up. There were files for black-ops missions in Crimea, Somalia and Brazil. Pembrook is still in the game. An audio file has Leah and Jenkins using their Drona numbers as they work on a mission. They aren’t being targeted by Pembrook, they work for Pembrook. Sam can’t contact Shyla to warn Callen – signal jammers knocked out the cell service. Gunmen rush near Sam, Fatima and Rountree. Gunfire is exchanged. Fatima and Rountree are pinned down.
Sam is able to get Fatima and Rountree to a safer location – people are still shooting. If they can hold out, the FBI could rescue them but Sam is more worried the FBI is walking into an ambush. More gunfire is exchanged. Sam takes out at least one of the shooter.
In Leah’s room, Callen gets a call from Shyla about the lost comms with Sam and company. The Summer-led FBI team suddenly is unreachable too. Callen is going to the building, Castor will take Beltran back to boat shed. Beltran wants to stay with Leah. He’s not worried about his safety, he just wants to be with her. Callen realizes there were only three Drona subject numbers – eight, 11 and 22. Hertel, Leah and Jenkins. Beltran wasn’t on the list – he was never warned.
Rountree is willing to create a diversion by running – but not in a show-offy way. Fatima thinks he’ll get killed. Sam assures them nobody is getting killed today. He has a plan.
Callen has his weapon out and orders Beltran away from Leah. Leah said 14 to Callen before losing consciousness – Beltran was 14. Callen knocks on the door to get Castor in as back-up. Beltran is impressed that Callen figured it all out but is more impressed with his own handy work when a Drona gunman, not Castor, walks into the hospital room.
Using some flashbangs, Sam, Fatima and Rountree move the people shooting them out of their secure locations. Once they were seen, team NCIS shoot them. Summer and the FBI arrive. Sam finds the signal jammer and shuts it off, he’s quick to contact Callen.
Explaining that once again, Agent Castor is out cold, Beltran takes Callen’s gun. Beltran doesn’t kill people who don’t deserve it – he didn’t have Castor killed, won’t kill Callen. Callen notes that Beltran was going to kill Leah, who was in a coma in a hospital bed. Beltran wasn’t going to kill her – she’s no longer a threat. He just needed eyes on her to make sure. Beltran says he and Callen are on the same side – they want to kill Pembrook. Beltran’s partner has a sedative prepared for Callen – not going to kill Callen, just a long nap like Castor. Callen hits the partner. Beltran runs and after Callen gets the sedative in the leg, he runs after Beltran. As Callen runs after Beltran, he has some Pembrook flashbacks before the sedative takes hold. Callen is out cold and Beltran is gone.
Shyla updates Kilbride. Callen and Castor are fine – it really was just a sedative. Beltran and his partner are gone but the FBI are hunting them down. Shyla also has Kilbride’s ride to the airport waiting outside of the office. She doesn’t remember his order to cancel the flight. Kilbride is not amused – he hired her because she never forgets anything. She offers to cancel the flight but is non-refundable. The Admiral hates wasting money, according to Shyla. “Remind me to fire you when I get back.” And the Admiral is off.
In the Armory, Fatima and Rountree are packing up their things. Fatima asks about a story Summer started at breakfast. Seems Rountree and Summer were having a lovely walk on the beach when the wind kicked up. Summer’s hat went flying and Rountree went flying after it. As he was catching up, he destroyed a kid’s sandcastle. He got the hat back and then spent an hour helping the kid rebuild the castle. Fatima thinks Rountree really likes Summer. He admits he does but realizes he’s late for dinner with Summer. He races away.
Callen is at the back balcony in the boat shed when Sam arrives. Callen said had Beltran and he let Beltran get away. And maybe he did it because he wants Beltran to kill Pembrook. But if Beltran kills anyone else, well, Callen knows that’s his fault. Sam thinks they need to find Beltran and Pembrook. Callen wants to know how Hetty knew the Drona subjects were being targeted. “Add it to the list,” Sam replies. Callen is going for a drink with Castor. Sam notes that it is the second time Castor got knocked out and lost his gun – maybe Castor shouldn’t be trusted with the wedding ring. Callen tells Best Man Sam to knock it off.
What head canon can be formed from here: So done with the Drona/Callen’s childhood storyline. The program has a handful of episode left and this one and one down the road eat up valuable time with this tedious storyline. And the episode down the road – where I will be screeching about retconning Pembrook – could have been used for more of Rountree’s history beside his sister, more of Fatima’s history period, more of Sam with Raymond, Kensi’s mom’s with Rosa. There were other “personal history” episodes besides this nonsense.
As for the episode itself, it was really well done, if a bit talky, for a set-up episode for what comes in episode 19. It was all about Pembrook without Pembrook physically in the episode (flashbacks don’t count). It is still up in the air if Beltran, Leah, Jenkins and Hertel are villains or victims. Beltran is a mess – no issue with killing Leah, Jenkins and Hertel but knockout syringes for Callen and poor Agent Castor. The Drona drama is such a mess.
Episode number: Episode number 16 in season 14. This is the 318th episode overall.

NCIS 21×07 “A Thousand Yards” is a very good episode of NCIS and a homage to a thousand episodes of a franchise that feels like it’s got a lot more to give. The episode, short on the big cameos we expected – though Vanessa Lachey and Daniela Ruah do pop up for a banter-filled conversation with Torres – nonetheless makes it feel like the world of NCIS is far larger than just the mothership.
If we say ironic it’s just because CBS recently renewed NCIS for a 22nd season, but it has yet to renew NCIS: Hawai’i for a fourth season. NCIS: Los Angeles was canceled last season. And though yes, NCIS: Sydney was recently given a second season order, outside of that we have NCIS: Origins, a Gibbs origin story, and the as-of-yet untitled Tony and Ziva Paramout+ original. NCISverse sounds all nice and well, but for that name to really mean something, the network is going to have to let something grow that isn’t connected to the mothership.
What we’re basically saying is, that this episode of NCIS just made us want more, not less. Of this particular team, of course, but also of the possible stories of this universe. So, can we make that happen?
THE WHY
NCIS 21×07 “A Thousand Yards” was basically about two things, the why these people do what they do, and the team they do it with. The why was what Jared, Vance’s son, was stuck on. How can you continue doing the job when the job has taken so much from you? How can you continue putting your life at risk? He didn’t get it when the hour started, and he especially didn’t get why his father would continue to be so invested after getting shot.
Ironically, the episode was about showing Jared that half of the why was the part that he never considered, the people. Yes, there’s the doing what’s right, and there is a greater good aspect to a job like being an NCIS agent. You don’t go into it without caring about that. But there’s also why you stay in it daily, and that has a lot to do with the people you work with.
You want to do good, yes. You know you’re making a difference, yes. But on the day-to-day, you’re not doing it for the big reasons, you’re doing it for the person who sits next to you. The one who goes out on the field with you. The one who saves your ass, and the one whose ass you get to save. That’s why you do the job.
THE PEOPLE
And that’s what has made NCIS so special for so many years, if we want to get meta. That’s what has made the NCISverse so special for 1000 episodes. All these years, all these shows, the franchise has managed to craft good shows and interesting cases, yes, but you don’t get here on the back of interesting cases. You get here on the back of memorable characters.
The NCIS franchise is here because people connected with Gibbs. Because people fell in love with Tony and Ziva, enough that all these years later, they’re coming back for a spinoff. Because they loved a character who knew as G for close to a decade. Because they shipped a scruffy-looking cop and a tough army brat. Because they fell in love with the newest grumpy/sunshine ship in Hawaii. Because of our first female SAC. And also because of the stories that have yet to be told.
NCIS: Hawai’i airs right after this episode. The episode is titled “The Next Thousand.” It’s a clever thematic nod to this hour, but it also feels like a promise. There are more stories to be told. For NCIS proper – for the team, for Parker who hasn’t had as much time, for Jessica and Jimmy, who are still finding their footing as a couple. For a NCIS: Hawai’i, that deserves that fourth season. For a NCIS: Sydney, that is getting that second one. And yes, even for a NCIS: Los Angeles that didn’t get to keep telling its stories, and for NCIS: New Orleans and for whatever comes next. NCISverse, after all.
Things I think I think:
Okay, but that’s a fair question, Leon Vance.
How dare you start by putting Vance in danger, NCIS?
Yes, too soon Curtis. TOO SOON.
Jared was actually supremely helpful.
Of course, we can only see Kensi’s face. HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN? DID SHE HAVE THE BABY?
We need answers, damn it.
Also, of all the people to mention, Kilbride? Truly?
Another question, why is Kensi taking this call? Where is Callen? We know where Sam is, but …Callen? Somewhere looking for Hetty, I presume, in a storyline that is going to conclude sometime soon, on screen, right? RIGHT?
Me, emotional at this Vance and McGee scene? Nah.
Yes.
I cannot at this Bones flashback from the past from Fletcher Voss, who is giving EVIL.
Look, I resent the implication that 20 years was a long time ago.
Yeah, just stand there with your badges. That’ll do it.
“The only way light can grow is by passing it on.”

Guest stars of note: Erik Palladino as Special Deputy U.S. Marshal Vostanik Sabatino was back from season 13’s “Hard for the Money”; Bill Goldberg as DOJ Agent Lance Hamilton is back from season 13’s “Bonafides”; David Paul Olsen as Tom Olsen is back from season 11’s “Human Resources” where people were trying to kill him there too; Lesley Boone as Nina Barnes in back from the prior episode, “A Long Time Coming” crossover episode; Natalia Del Riego as Rosa Reyes is back from “Survival of the Fittest”; Duncan Campbell as NCIS Special Agent Castor is back from “Blood Bank”; Gianni DeCenzo as Luke Austin; Eddie Kaulukukui as Army Col. Tuivasa; Daya Vaidya as Marina and Katrina Begin as Lauren Olsen.
Our heroes: Save Sam’s buddy.
What important things did we learn about: Callen: On loan to a joint taskforce out of town for an undercover sting operation. Sam: See Callen. Kensi: Missing out on a girls only weekend with Rosa. Deeks: See Sam. Fatima: No Daddy Issues. Rountree: Keeps full outfits in work desk drawers. Kilbride: Unknown to those in the “Twitter-Tok universe”.
What not so important things did we learn about: Callen: Absent. Sam: Absent. Kensi: A fan of Tom Olsen’s novels. Deeks: Absent. Fatima: Introducing Rountree to a veterinarian not a vegetarian. Rountree: Shorts for brunch is an interesting fashion choice. Kilbride: Surprised a SEAL would do publicity for a book.
Where in the world is Henrietta Lange? Not a mention.
Who's down with OTP: Happy in life Kensi was looking for the same for Lance. Lance, not looking.
Who's down with BrOTP: At the very end, Sabatino passes Fatima a beer and without making a big deal of it, Rountree quietly passes her a mineral water. Nice taking care of your partner.
Fashion review: Kensi wore a long-sleeve blue sweatshirt with a white vertical stripe running down the sleeves. In the field, she had on a grey long-sleeve henley. Fatima jogs into the episode in black running gear. She wears a long-sleeve, dark blue sweater for the rest of the episode. Rountree starts the episode in brunch gear that honestly looks like men’s medium blue summer pajamas. They’re shorts. At the office, he changes into a long sleeve, dark red tee-shirt and jeans. Kilbride wore his Kilbride uniform – dark blue suit, pale blue dress shirt
Music: No music today.
Any notable cut scene: Not today.
Quote: Nina: "All right, get out here." Sabatino leaves the food truck: “I mean, man, those, those are great in there, huh?” Nina: “Oh, thanks. I was wondering why people were lining up and giving me money for them. Mystery solved!”
They needed to find Nina a few seasons ago.
Anything else: Sam’s buddy Tom Olsen is bow and arrow hunting in the mountains. There are animals around. He takes a shot and gets his deer. As he tries to retrieve the animal in a valley, a coyote makes an odd noise and moves away. Suddenly from the top of a hill, a man opens fire on Olsen. Olsen uses his trusty bow and arrow to stop that but a second gunman starts to fire. Taking a bullet to the shoulder, Olsen pulls out his own gun and makes quick work of the second gunman. Leaving his backpack behind, Olsen takes his bow, arrows and gun as he moved deeper into the valley. Four more gunmen come from the top of a hill and start to track Olsen.
Fatima is jogging back home when Rountree gets out of an Uber. She’s dressed to work out, he’s dressed for brunch. Fatima, Rountree and a veterinarian pal of Fatima’s have brunch plans but that’s tomorrow, not today. And that’s a good thing since they hear from Kilbride.
Walking into the boat shed, Kensi is apologizing to Rosa. With Deeks out of town, it was supposed to be a weekend of food, movies and fun for the two but now Kensi has to work. Rosa is fine with Kensi working – it isn’t Kensi’s fault. Kensi asks if Rosa is okay going to the beach with her friends before realizing how silly that question was. Kensi gives Rosa an EDC bag that includes a knife, first aid kit and a lot of things a teenage girl probably doesn’t need for the beach. As she’s leaving for the beach, Rosa asks Kensi if they could get a raincheck for the day. Kensi is so happy Rosa asked.
Fatima and shorts-wearing Rountree arrive at the office. He pulls out clothes from his desk drawer – he keeps a change of clothing everywhere after “the Speedo incident”. As he changes, Rountree asks about the veterinarian, who is a comedy club fan but isn’t really funny. Asking about hobbies, Rountree is told the veterinarian loves magic. Wondering why Fatima thought they’d be a pair, Rountree is shown a video of the veterinarian. Suddenly, he’s a magic fan.
Lance Hamilton joins Kensi in the boat shed. She explains that Callen, Sam and Deeks are on loan to a joint task force for an undercover sting operation. It is Kensi and Lance today – which the last time the two were paired up, he had to go to the hospital. He just remembers the sushi.
On the plasma screen, the Admiral welcomes Lance to the team for the day. Rountree starts the case review. A park ranger found two men dead with assault rifles in their hands in South Valley, Utah. It is privately owned land. Worried about the owner, the park ranger went to Weber Yamada’s cabin and found Yamada dead. In the cabin, there were personal items belonging to Tom Olsen. The shooters were looking for Olsen but he took out the shooters.
Lance explains DOJ put him on the case because they want to know why two men are shooting a former SEAL. The dead men are not on any DOJ databases. Kensi mentions Olsen’s writing career taking off and while he has a large social media presence, there haven’t been any threats according to his publisher. Fatima heard from other park rangers – there are multiple boot prints following Olsen. He is not safe.
Kilbride gives some background on Olsen – former SEAL who worked in the CIA with Vostanik Sabatino. The Admiral wants Fatima to work with Sabatino while Kensi and Lance go to Utah to find out what is going on. If Tom Olsen “is on the right side of this”, Kilbride wants him brought in safely.
Kensi goes to a switch on the wall and shows the funding upgrades the Admiral got for the boat shed. An armory comes from the ceiling. Lance jokes that it is where Deeks keeps his haircare products. Kensi thinks he’s jealous. The two each grab a backpack and prepare for their trip to Utah. Kensi wants to ID the dead men. Lance is more worried about Olsen not being “on the right side of this.” If he’s not, they’ll have to arrest him.
Sabatino is looking at the Porsche as Fatima leaves the office. He scoffs at the car – what kind of man owns a vehicle like that. Fatima asks what if it is a woman. He scoffs more – obviously a woman with Daddy Issues. Fatima tells him to get in, she’s driving. Sabatino says he loves the color, Fatima says she loves her Daddy, no issues. And they’re off.
On the plane to Utah, Kensi talks about having an “instant teenager” with Lance. Kensi noticed Lance mentioned “we drove down to Austin” so is “we” a possible girlfriend. No, just his dog Francis. It was Jessica’s decision to name the dog Francis, Lance preferred “Zeus”. Jessica thought it was pedestrian and obvious. Kensi thinks she would have liked Jessica. Lance agrees. Francis, by the way, is a rottweiler. Kensi starts to ask Lance about dating again but he mentions that he can’t see himself dating another woman. He’s sad. So is Kensi.
On a video call, the Admiral talks to Col. Tuivasa, Tom Olsen’s former commanding officer, about his new career. Nobody at SOCOM on JSOC had problems with “Lt. Olsen’s works of fiction.” In fact, the members of the military are some of his biggest fans. Reviewing his work with the SEALs, they can’t find any obvious reason there would be a hit on him but everyone is checking to make sure. With a career in the SEALs and CIA, Olsen likely had enemies. Kilbride remembers a time when SEALs would keep a low-profile returning to the civilian live. Tuivasa tells him “Things are a little different these days.” Besides, there is nothing wrong with making a good living once out of the service. Kilbride agrees but is proud that nobody in “the Twitter-Tock universe knows who the hell I am.”
In the boat shed, Castor introduces Fatima and Sabatino to Lauren Olsen, Tom’s wife. Castor brought her to be boat shed. After the introductions, Fatima tries to reassure Lauren they believe her husband is alive but it is not needed – Lauren is sure he’s alive. When Fatima asks how, Sabatino tells Fatima that Lauren knows what her husband is capable of. Lauren explains he is comfortable in the South Valley in Utah – he has homefield advantage. Fatima asks about security concerns since the career change. Lauren things they are blessed, Olsen loves to write and now is getting paid for it. He loves to write but not do any of the publicity around selling a book but they both understand that’s now how publishing works. While Olsen wasn’t worried that someone would come after him, he was worried about Lauren and Robbie, their son. Fatima arranges a safehouse for Lauren and Robbie.
Back in Ops, there are no threats against Olsen from the SEALs, the CIA or the publishing world. That changes the investigation from the why, why are people after Olsen, to the who – who are the people after him. The Admiral wants to know everything about the shooters. Rountree found IDs for the two men but the IDs go back to men who have been dead for five years. The Admiral wants them tracked down.
Kensi fangirls to Lance about Olsen’s books. His hero is a normal man – he gets hurt, he gets scared. She’s read them all and recommends them to Lance. Lance is a “wait for the movie” kind of guy, which doesn’t surprise Kensi. Reading from her satellite phone, Olsen’s footprints disappeared about 20-yards from the shooting location. He disappeared. That makes sense to Kensi since Darren McCall was trained by the best tracker in Colorado. Lance asks about Darren McCall and learns that’s the hero in Olsen’s books. She thinks that the detail and expertise that appears in the books are the same expertise Olsen has. With four against Olsen, he is in for a hell of a fight – so are Kensi and Lance.
As Fatima makes tea, Sabatino complains about the year 2009 magazines in the boat shed. Fatima likes 2009, it was the year she got her drivers license. “Oh geez, I have jeans as old as you,” Sabatino replies. Fatima congratulates him – they’re coming back into fashion. Castor arrives with a woman named Marina, but he didn’t get her last name. She didn’t offer it, Marina says. Sabatino jumps up from the couch – he and Marina go way back. He hugs her and she throws him to the ground. Revenge for Kyoto. Fatima asks Sabatino if anyone likes him. The best he can come up with is his third wife.
Marina worked with Olsen, and “this moron” meaning Sabatino who is still trying to stand, at the CIA. She learned that there was a threat against Olsen at a book signing about a month ago but security diverted the threat before Olsen arrived. He likely never knew. The threat was a man named Austin. Finally off the floor, Sabatino teases Marina that she misses him.
Rountree arrives in Kilbride’s office with some updates. Kensi and Lance landed in Utah. The threat at Olsen’s book signing was a man named Luke Austin. Austin is in LA with four handguns and an AR-15. He’s big on guns and motorcycle clubs even though he doesn’t have a motorcycle license. Fatima and Sabatino are going to check out Austin. The Admiral is concerned that maybe some bikers have an issue with Olsen. He also wants to talk to Olsen’s publisher – Kelsey Shore. She lied to him about the threats against Olsen.
Kensi tells Lance that they found Olsen’s backpack full of deer meat but nothing else. The two guns used in the attack against Olsen had no numbers – they’re ghost guns and untraceable. Lance figures out the attack on Olsen based on what he left behind.
Waiting for Austin by his work, Fatima asks Sabatino what gives – everyone in the office says Sabatino talks all the time and Kensi finds him “straight up hilarious”. But he won’t talk to Fatima. Sabatino said that he was like that as a younger man but he’s different now. Fatima rolls her eyes and leaves the car. Sabatino follows her, explaining that it isn’t Fatima but it is everyone her age. They’re all so serious. If he said something funny, she might get offended and then he’d get “that call.” Then, the NCIS HR lady with the one good eye calls him and tells him the joke is going into his personnel file. Fatima argues her generation has a sense of humor.
Tracking through Utah, Kensi remembers that Darren McCall would follow his own tracks to change direction. Kensi walks back a few steps and finds blood on a large stone. A test on the blood comes back as B-Negative, Olsen’s type and rare blood type to boot.
Fatima and Sabatino approach Luke Austin, who is a bit nerdish. When they mention Tom Olsen, Austin freaks out about the rent-a-cops at the book signing. Austin is unhappy about the treatment of the Andre Gane character in “On My Six” – the character was killed off despite being the moral compass of the entire series. Sabatino makes sure Austin didn’t want to hurt Olsen. Austin says look at me – could he really hurt Olsen? Asked about the guns, Austin is a fan of guns. Asked if he’s left the state in the last five-days, Austin confesses he hasn’t left Orange County in the last five-years. He also has issues with millennials who identify with specific houses in “Harry Potter”. Fatima is offended.
Kensi and Lance come across another failed assassin. This one also has been shot by a bow and arrow but is impaled on a fallen tree limb. Kensi thinks Olsen saw the gunman sitting in a tree waiting for him to come by. Olsen got him first. The dead man’s walkie-talkie goes off with someone speaking in Portuguese with a Brazilian accent. Lance is surprised Kensi speaks Portuguese. She answers in the language. The walkie-talkie goes off again. The man on the other side is angry, they want to find and kill Olsen so they can all go home. The walkie-talkie reports that the three remaining hitmen found Olsen and are moving in on him.
The Admiral is reading the riot act to Olsen’s publisher. She did not believe the threats were “relevant” to the investigation. He calls her a moron. Rountree arrives to hear the Admiral complain that New York publishing executives are worse than Hollywood executives. “Good to know, sir,” is all Rountree has for that comment. Rountree found one of the shooters passed through a small entry station between Mexico and California a few days ago. Reviewing video of everyone – and that meant old people, families with kid – that passed, five men with a similar profile passed through the entry station. They are all young, fit, with no luggage. Their names trace back to people who died in the last few years. “Someone with means is funding this.” The Admiral wants to hear from Nina Barnes – she’d know who could get those style weapons, the ghost guns, to the gunmen. Rountree is a fan of the red velvet cupcakes. He started following her on Instagram and shows it to the Admiral. Nina has a food truck and updates her offerings daily with a video. “I feel a deep sense of embarrassment for Nina.” Fatima and Sabatino are on their way.
As one of the gunmen comes close to Kensi and Lance, she signals for Lance to “choke him out”. Lance doesn’t understand. He picks up the gunman and drives the man into the ground. There are now just two gunmen left.
There is a long line of cupcake fans but Fatima and Sabatino have to take Nina Barnes away from her cupcake food truck. With her foot in a boot – a spelunking accident – Barnes thinks she should be in a better place with Kilbride. Looking at Sabatino, she asks “what are you”, wanting to know his background. He claims Italian but she disagrees – Armenian. On his mother’s side. They ask about the ghost guns and the shooters being from Brazil. Fatima takes over the cake truck with Sabatino ‘s help as Barnes makes some phone calls.
A gunman starts walking toward Kensi and Lance before collapsing with an arrow in his back. “It’s about damn time the cavalry arrived,” Tom Olsen tells Kensi and Lance. Tom is bleeding from his shoulder. Kensi introduces Lance. Olsen notes that they are making DOJ agents bigger than they use to. As she tends to his wound, Kensi asks about Tom’s cane. After four years of physical therapy with a team of professionals, he’s finally walking without it. Kensi is impressed. Olsen isn’t – he and the physical therapists will all be back together as they try to heal his arm. With one gunman left, Olsen doesn’t think it is a far fight for the would be killer. Lance gives Olsen a mix of water and electrolytes to drink.
Sabatino is impressed by the cupcakes. Barnes was wondering why people were lined up to give her money for them – “mystery solved.” This program needed her after season six. The ghost guns were sold by a rival to Barnes’s contact. Ten ghost gun rifles and survival packs were supplied. There are four more assassins out there. They also have an Airpeek Professional Drone with a five-pound payload. It is carrying C-4. Everything was delivered to a ranch – Barnes sent the details to Kilbride. As Sabatino walks away, he asks for a cupcake and gets one – just one.
Ronaldo Campos is running the ranch. While most of it is classified, Kilbride tells Rountree that SOCOM said Campos is in the kidnapping business. A SEAL team killed Campos’s brother seven-years ago when they were rescuing a kidnapped executive. Olsen was a SEAL seven-years ago. SOCOM is investigating how Ronaldo Campos learned about the SEALs involvement. Fatima, Sabatino and Rountree are being brought to the ranch by a helicopter to capture Campos and find who is controlling the drone.
Kensi, Lance and Olsen are going to a rescue site to be flown out of the valley. As they move on, a drone is following them. With a helicopter five minutes out from their rescue site, Olsen thinks he’s two-hours away from a nice ribeye. If Olsen makes it three ribeyes, Lance will bring the tequila. As they wait, a series of gunmen come out of nowhere and open fire.
Fatima and Sabatino take out the two guards watching the ranch. Rountree gets a look inside the house. There are two guards and a drone pilot in the middle of the room. Rountree drops a flash-bang into the room. Fatima and Sabatino fight with the two guards in the room but the drone pilot runs away. Rountree is following him.
While the gunshots keep coming, Kensi is trying to figure out a way to get them to safety.
Rountree tackles the drone pilot, tossing the drone controls to Fatima.
Kensi opens fire on the bad guys but runs out ammo. Tom is out of ammo too. Kensi sees the drone coming and is trying to get a shot off with a different weapon. The drone makes a sudden turn and blows up around the killers. One survives with Lance taking him into custody.
Arriving back at the office, Fatima and Rountree listen to Sabatino complain about the helicopter ride. Sabatino brings Greek-Armenian food and passes out some beers. When Rountree hands Fatima some mineral water, Sabatino asks if that’s a health thing or a Muslim thing. She mentions HR and he laughs. Rountree is going to go with her to HR. Sabatino doesn’t know if they are serious or not.
No ribeyes on the plane, just some boxed sandwiches and salads. Olsen toasts his friend Webby Yamada, “a good dude.” Sad, Olsen says that all Yamada did was invite him to hunt on his land, he didn’t deserve what happened. The book publicity put Olsen on the Campos’s radar. SOCOM is looking to see who leaked the information about Olsen. Campos is in custody – he’ll never be a free man.
The Admiral calls with kind words for Kensi, Lance and Olsen. Kilbride turns the phone over to Rosa. Kensi apologizes for being out of touch. Rosa had a great day bodysurfing. She and the Admiral are having pizza until Kensi comes back to LA. Kensi tries to thank the Admiral, it means the world to her. “Why must everything be about you Agent Blye?”
There is a card at the end with a photo of longtime series director Terrence O’Hara, who passed away during the season. “Our brother, our teach, our friend.”
What head canon can be formed from here: A good episode with limited resources. Early in the program’s run, there was a need for outside characters. Sabatino and Hamilton provided that while everyone else was wrapping up the crossover episodes. Throw in Nina Barnes and while Sam not being around to rescue his buddy Tom was noticeable, the people around to help were up to the job.
While she had just one scene, Lauren Olsen was exactly the wife Tom Olsen would have – Sabatino nailed that. She knew her husband would stay alive until he could get to help or help could get to him.
Nice callback to “Let It Burn” with “the Speedo incident” for Rountree. Nice callback to “Decoy” in season 11 to the sushi with Lance for Kensi. Nina Barnes’s red velvet cupcakes brought to the office by Kilbride got a mention for the second consecutive episode. Those must be great cupcakes.
The cool armory from the ceiling, like the back deck of the boat shed, should have been in the program for several years.
Lovely tribute at the end to Terrence O’Hara. O’Hara directed 29-episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles, 56 episodes of the mothership and four-episodes of NCIS: New Orleans. He also directed an X-Files episode, my first fandom.
Episode number: This is the 11th episode of season 14, the 313th episode overall.
