This is ALMOST enough to wean me off my secret favourite pairing: Father Francis Mulcahy and his meshuga love for the rabbi paratrooper Captain Epstein. The fondness on Francis's face as he recalls Eppy! They went through chaplain school together! Together they rolled their eyes at the enthusiastic Protestants looking to convert people to their faith! They held hands, they gazed into each others eyes, Epstein practiced Latin and Mulcahy practiced Hebrew. Does Epstein have a beard? (Literally or figuratively.) DID THEY KISS? Will they meet up after the war? Is this why Mulcahy wanted to be a captain so badly so that he and Epstein would have the same rank? Will Epstein learn sign language? Can a Conservative rabbi and a Catholic priest live together and pray together? Would Epstein talk Mulcahy into waterskiing? What is Epstein's given name? You have a week to decide!

there's a question poised on the tip of his tongue, one that ultimately isn't asked due to the clear emotional distress the young man is in, on whether johnnie wants a rabbi or simply someone to listen to him.

mulcahy can try, concerning the former, in a way that'll do in a pinch, even if he's in the opinion that rabbi epstein at one of their sister hospitals could do a much better job, but he's certainly not going to turn away anyone who comes to his chapel looking for advice, for someone to hear their problems. this he can do.

By a standard ruling invented by me for the purpose of making this last out 7 days of polling, that means I have to eliminate both couples and include a new rarepair in the poll.
