Southern Walkway
A wonderful half day Wellington walk, the Southern Walkway runs from the yellow sandy beach of Oriental Bay to the rugged south coast bays, with three summits and plenty of views along the way. Oriental Bay is where on a good day Wellingtonians head in their masses, attracted by a lovely beach, regularly topped up with sand, cafes, and a bustling coastal walkway. The well signed posted walkway…

(SPOILERS if you haven't seen the show yet):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lois Lane has a cut out clip of Vicki Vale. Vicki Vale is a journalist in Gotham City. Her first appearance was in Batman #49 (1948) as seen in the panel here (W: Bill Finger, A: Lew Sayre and Bob Kane, I: Charles Paris, L: Ira Schnapp).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looks like Jimmy is a fan of Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask. Good video game taste.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jimmy mentions a psychic starfish and the one starfish in the DC universe who is psychic is Starro the Conqueror, who's first appearance is in Brave and the Bold 28 (1960) (the cover art here is done by Mike Sekowsky, Murphy Anderson, and Ira Schnapp) and has the power to mind control people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lois, after barging into Perry White's office about a story, mentions Mt. Simonson. This is a neat name drop to Superman: The Man of Steel writer Louise Simonson, one of the nicest comic book writers you'll ever meet. She helped co-create John Henry Irons a.k.a Steel with artist of the Superman: The Man of Steel comic, Jon Bogdanove (really hope we get to see Irons in this show too).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jon Bogdanove also gets a name drop here as does...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dan Jurgen, comic book writer and artist on the Superman comic in the 90s (also one of my favorite Superman artists).
Now who are these kids that call themselves the Newskid Legion? Well, they are a VERY deep DC cut and reference to the Newsboy Legion back in the 1940s. The group was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, LEGENDARY comic book creators.
Tumblr media
The page here is from Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe #16 (1986) with the art by Jack Kirby and Karl Kesel. Most of the Newskid Legion is named after the Newsboy Legion members
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gabby and Big Words here share names with their Newsboy Legion counterparts as does Flip Johnson...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
who shares names with Walter "Flip" Johnson here on the cover of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olson #137 (1971) which was done by Jack Kirby, Neal Adams, and Gaspar Saladino.
Tumblr media
Patty, the cartoonist of the Newskid Legion homages this panel from Adventures of Superman #500 (1993) (W: Karl Kesel, P: Tom Grummet, I: Doug Hazelwood, C: Glenn Whitmore, L: Albert DeGuzman), the first appearance of Superboy, Conner Kent/ Kon-El.
Tumblr media
But who is the one below that drawing? We'll his name is in Big Word's word puzzle, in the show. It's Jim Harper, the Guardian.
Tumblr media
Jim Harper becomes the Newsboy Legion's legal guardian despite their causing trouble for him. The page here is from Star Spangled Comics #7, the Newsboy Legion and the Guardian's first appearance, by Joe Simon, Jack Kirby, and Whitney Ellsworth. You might've seen the Guardian on the recent Young Justice cartoon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Lois, Clark, and Jimmy go investigate about the smuggled robots in Metropolis, Jimmy makes a reference to super intelligent gorillas in France. This is a subtle hint at Monsieur Mallah, the Doom Patrol villain who will be in the show along with his partner, the Brain. Both made their first appearance in Doom Patrol #86 (1964) .
Tumblr media
The cover art here is done by Arnold Drake, Bob Brown, and Ira Schnapp.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later in the episode we see Clark receive his powers and he is surrounded with electricity, giving off Superman Blue vibes when in the comics, Superman gained electricity powers and became Electric Blue Superman who's first appearance was in Superman #123 (1997) (cover art by Dan Jurgens, Joe Rubenstein, Patrick Martin, and Todd Klein.

Need to know what your Wesker from the gaming HCs thinks of The Institute from the Fallout series. It's a caricature, so sterile and advanced compared to the wasteland it surrounds that it's an intentional narrative turn, dripping with allegory and metaphors to the dangers of assuming the role of creation.
I'm so deeply unwell trying to figure out if he'd get ideas, or cringe, OR BOTH, or be uncomfortable, or be too comfortable.
I am so so so curious what he thinks of Big MT - their situation, how they were all brilliant minds akin to his own with stunningly similar teachings that were destroyed by one man to prevent them from enacting bloody ruin - and the resulting insane Zero, Eight, Klein, Dala, Morbius and Borous. How they behave, how they echo out their original selves incomprehensibly, stuck in obsessions they can't shake any more than they can regenerate their brains' neutered nerve endings.
I can think of so many games that echo out the 'hey science, Do Not build the torment nexus, please' thing oh nooooo lol
Thank you for reading!
What's up Nshtn! Thanks for the ask!
---
In my opinion, his reaction would differ varying on what part your Wesker is from, mainly either pre RE5, or post RE5.
Pre RE5 Wesker would find it laughable that these game developers were actually trying to say something about scientific discovery, something that has been said a million times before.
He'd look at Big MT and view it as a failure, but one with so much promise. Including all the Think Tank members.
They had made so many incredible discoveries and inventions; Saturnite, the retrieval harnesses, cloaking tech and cyber dogs.
But their demise only showed their lack of ambition in Albert's eyes. They didn't go far enough. And they weren't aware of the traitor in their midst before it was too late, and they had all been turned into shadows of themselves.
Albert Victim Blaming Wesker.
In his eyes, they deserved it, because they were weak. And Albert? He is simply different™.
---
Post RE5 though is a whole different story.
Albert will empathise with the scientists, yet he will quietly admire Mobius' determination to stop the others before they can cause further damage to the Mojave.
After all, Wesker has now been humbled, irrevocably. He sees that even if he did succeed in his mission of spreading Urobouros, he could have damaged the world beyond repair, being what his so called 'godhood' could fix.
And he could have hurt you.
Secretly, Albert wishes he was like Mobius; wishes he had been able to see the reality in his complex fueled delusion, and stopped himself before he lost such a great part of himself that he felt empty inside.
Miraculously, Albert has you to help heal him, but he can't help but wonder what would have happened if you weren't there.
Would he go entirely mad, like the scientists of Big MT? He can only speculate.
But he knows that despite losing so much, he's gained a lot more than what he had.
Albert Whumpsker. He'll be okay.
---
Sorry I didn't get to cover the Institute in this one, I'll mull it over the next few days and if you want I can post that too. I hope you're satisfied, and thanks again Nshtn!

you dont condone smoking. completely understood.
ok now time for my one unhinged ask (i feel like this is my confession podium rn)
BUT what about albert wesker 0% nic vaping off a Smok Fortis with black leather finish or a cute black brushed steel boxmod Argus MT. it smells nice, he can puff cool tricks with it, and it makes a nice lil fwooooooooooosh sound when he pulls from it. (turns out he made the juice himself, it's all custom, and it makes the clouds look so beautiful and dense in the air, curling up into themselves like fantasy smoke...)
you can't even be mad when he 'accidentally' blows a cloud that poofs against your face because it smells very nice...
i leave it up to you trekk what's it smell like... the crowd (me. it's just me it's literally just me) is so curious!!!
and if he offers it to you then you know it's touched his lips so many times god help me-
also yea this is totally ooc im just being A Silly
okay but this has tattoo wesker written all over it (it's so hot when people smoke). my bf vape is very fruity and i love smelling it because...yummy fruit
you're standing outside a bar with him, neon lights from the signs casting him in a purple and blue glow, and while you're teasing and flirting with each other he pulls his vape out of his pocket. at first you aren't sure... most people who vape are kind of annoying with it, but his looks cool
he hits it once or twice, continuing the conversation like it isn't even there, so you ignore it too, until light wind blows the dense smoke right over to you. it smells fresh, like mint and the smallest hint of tobacco (i'm bad at smells i don't know he seems like a cigar guy)
but the smells is honestly...really good. it catches you off guard enough for him to notice, and with a sly smirk he offers it to you, fingers brushing yours when you lightly take it from his grasp
you tell him you aren't sure, you're not much of a smoker, it'll make you cough. he reassures you with a quiet laugh that it's just vapor, no nicotine, no need to worry so much, but if you don't want to-
your lips are around it before he can finish. it does make you cough, a little, but it's more from the sudden realization that you can feel his chapstick on your lips now, you basically just kissed, maybe if you focused enough you could taste his tongue-
he steps closer, towering over you with neon lights dancing around his cheekbones and blond hair, and okay... maybe you're a little in love with your mysterious tattoo artist

I'm playing the Sacristan in Tosca next month, after a lifetime being told I seem like I'd be a good vicar (they're not wrong, it's just a shame I'm not religious). In the spirit of this, here is a list of operatic vicar/priest/general churchy types I might play:
- Sacristan (Tosca)
- Mr Gedge (Albert Herring - done this one)
- Dr Daly (The Sorcerer)
- Fra Melitone (La forza del destino)
Honourable MT Mentions:
- Claude Frollo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)
- The Monsignor from Sister Act
Please add to this so I can find other roles which make use of the strange energy I was born with (ideally for baritone, but I'd be curious to hear about other voices too)

So we're back from a Great American Roadtrip, which I was pleased to see, as a concept, is still somewhat alive and well for others too, despite all odds. Got in around, hell, 10, 10:30 last night or so? Again, took tons of awesome pics, will throw a few up, but it's a chill day today. So. In the Jeep Gladiator, we did:
Monday: Metro Detroit to Albert Lea, MN. 690 miles.
Tuesday: Albert Lea to Gillette, WY, stopping at Mt. Rushmore on the way. 670 miles.
Wednesday: Gillette to West Yellowstone, MT. 460 miles.
Thursday: 17,000+ steps of hiking and exploring in Yellowstone National Park.
Friday: same.
Saturday: same.
Sunday: West Yellowstone to Dickinson, ND. 550 miles.
Monday: Dickinson to Eau Claire, WI. 620 miles.
Tuesday: Eau Claire to Metro Detroit. 610 miles.
If I had to guess, it was also at least 60 miles a day driving in the park, would that I had actually set the trip-meter upon leaving. And just wow... See, to me, the drive is part of the adventure of the road trip. I had never been in Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, or North Dakota before. Seeing boundless grazing fields with herds of cattle. Miles of corn and grain for dairy cows. Snow-capped mountains, hills of rocks and dirt with incredible striations and colors. And then in the park itself... wow. Every minute was a new experience I had never had before in this amazing country that I am priviliged enough to call home.
Tomorrow is back to work. Back to reality, and whatever else is piled up on my desk and in my email after eight days away from the office, but that's not today. Today is the afterglow (pure exhaustion) of an incredible road trip and vacation. Interspersed with laundry and unpacking and all that good stuff. It was a great trip, but as always, it is good to be back home and with our creatures, who totally missed us. 🥔

Little French Pastry, Mount Albert
Drinks pictured: Almond flat white ($5.8), long black ($4.5) and americano ($4.5).
Happy New Year! Went to Little French Pastry in Mt Albert a few weeks ago. They were unfortunately affected by the floods at the beginning of 2023 and took some time out to renovate, so it was nice to see the place packed. They use Ozone Coffee beans, and I had an almond flat white. They have indoor and outdoor seats, and I really liked their bright blue espresso machine!
