At least 10 people including a child have died in Indonesia following a series of powerful volcanic eruptions that destroyed homes and a Catholic convent, authorities said.

The eruptions, originating from Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki, hit the remote island of Flores on Monday, according the country's National Disaster Management Agency.

They began around midnight, sending thick plumes of ash up to 6,500 feet into the atmosphere and depositing hot ash on several nearby villages.

Fireman Yosef, an official at the Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki monitoring post, noted that volcanic materials were ejected as far as 3.7 miles from the crater, covering surrounding areas with ash and debris, which led to the destruction of homes, including a convent for Catholic nuns.

Rescuers are currently searching for additional victims believed to be trapped under collapsed buildings.

How Much Damage Did Lewotobi Laki Laki Eruption Cause?

The fatalities, including a child, were located within a 2.4-mile radius of the volcano's crater.

The eruptions impacted at least 10,000 residents across six villages in Wulanggitang District and four villages in Ile Bura District.

Many locals have sought refuge with relatives, while authorities are preparing schools to serve as temporary shelters for those who have been displaced.

In response to the escalating eruptions, Indonesia's volcano monitoring agency raised the alert level for Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki to the highest status and expanded the exclusion zone to a 4.3-mile radius early on Monday morning.

Agusta Palma, head of the Saint Gabriel Foundation, confirmed that one nun from Hokeng village had died, with another still missing. "Our nuns ran out in panic under a rain of volcanic ash in the darkness," Palma said.

How Common Are Volcanic Eruptions in Indonesia?

Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki is one of two stratovolcanos in East Flores district, known locally as the husband-and-wife mountains, with its counterpart being Lewotobi Perempuan, or "woman."

Earlier this year, around 6,500 residents were evacuated after the volcano began erupting in January, leading to the closure of the island's Frans Seda Airport.

Although that eruption did not result in casualties, the airport remains closed due to ongoing seismic activity.

Muhammad Wafid, head of the Geology Agency at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, explained that the characteristics of this eruption differ from those earlier in the year, attributing the recent activity to a buildup of pressure caused by a blockage of magma in the crater.

He said: "The eruptions that occurred since Friday were due to the accumulation of hidden energy."

How Many Active Volcanoes Does Indonesia Have?

The incident marks Indonesia's second significant volcanic eruption in recent weeks; on Oct. 27, Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted multiple times, producing thick columns of ash and blanketing nearby villages, though no casualties were reported from that event.

Indonesia is home to 120 active volcanoes and is situated along the "Ring of Fire," a region known for its seismic activity, including earthquakes and landslides, affecting its population of approximately 280 million.

Indonesia Continues to Erupt

Following nearly two decades of quiet, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki—a volcano on the Indonesian island of Flores—began erupting again in December 2023. An especially intense period of activity in November 2024 included several explosive eruptions that generated deadly pyroclastic flows, darkened the landscape with ashfall, and lofted soaring ash plumes that disrupted air travel.

The OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 captured this image of a volcanic plume streaming west from Laki-Laki on November 13, 2024. Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG) reported plume heights of 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) on November 13. This followed more-explosive eruptions the previous week, including one on November 7 that lofted ash as high as 17,000 meters (56,000 feet) and another on November 9 that reached 15,000 meters (49,000 feet), according to the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC).

The MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA’s Aqua satellite sensor captured an image (below) of the remnants of one of these high-flying, widely dispersed ash plumes over Flores on November 9. The aviation community tracks the movement of volcanic ash closely because it can cause damage to airplane windshields, airframes, wings, and engine components. At times, ash has caused engine failure. Jets generally cruise at heights above 10,000 meters, so ash plumes above this altitude pose a particular threat.

After the eruption on November 4, authorities elevated the aviation color code from orange to red, the highest on the scale. Airlines canceled more than 90 flights on November 13 alone and dozens of other flights on prior days due to ash, according to local news reports. Cancellations have affected both domestic and international flights, including flights into and out of Bali, an island popular among international travelers. Several airports temporarily closed after the November 4 eruption, though some had partially reopened by November 14, according to the Jakarta Globe.

Past research into aviation and volcanic hazards ranks Indonesia’s airports as the world’s third most vulnerable to volcanic activity. This was based on the number of active volcanoes that have caused problems in the past, the number of airports affected, and the total number of ash-related impacts. Other countries with high risk include the United States, Ecuador, Papua New Guinea, Italy, New Zealand, the Philippines, Mexico, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

An ongoing collaboration between the NASA Disasters program and several volcanic ash advisory centers, which includes a series of workshops, aims to develop safer and more efficient flight redirects around volcanic plumes using information collected by NASA satellites.

Several airlines have cancelled flights to and from Bali due to dangerous ash clouds from a volcano.

Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Cathay Pacific, IndiGo and AirAsia are airlines which have cancelled flights, as the ash from Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki made it unsafe to fly to the Indonesian holiday island.

The volcano spewed a 9km (6.2 miles) ash column into the sky over the weekend, one week after a major eruption killed 10 people.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology has also warned that the volcanic ash might drift to northern parts of the country.

In early November 2024, a series of explosive, deadly eruptions occurred at Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki—a volcano on the Indonesian island of Flores. A particularly strong eruption on November 3 sent hot ash as high as 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) into the air around midnight, some of which fell on several surrounding villages.

Mount Lewotobi is composed of the two adjacent stratovolcanoes: Laki-Laki and Perempuan (the "husband and wife"), which lie less than 2 kilometers apart. Volcanic material from the November 3 eruption fell as far as 6 kilometers (4 miles) from Laki-Laki’s crater, affecting more than 10,000 people, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency. Several smaller eruptions followed on November 5-6.

The latest eruptions were a continuation of about ten months of eruptive activity at Laki-Laki. Ash plumes from these eruptions have often drifted west of the edifice. In August and September 2024, wind carried ash to the island’s Frans Xavier Seda Airport, about 84 kilometers (52 miles) west, forcing officials to temporarily close it, according to news reports.

The country’s volcano monitoring agency reported on November 3 that volcanic activity had increased in the days preceding the strong eruption. On November 1, there were 119 deep volcanic earthquakes, whereas the week prior saw an average of 10-12 per day.

The conical Laki-Laki has been frequently active during the 19th and 20th centuries, while the taller and broader Perempuan erupted most recently in 1921 and 1935.
