Excellent fun, highly recommended As a child of the 1980s, these Stan Lee/Jack Kirby monster comics were first published decades before my birth. But I saw occasional reprints of these stories in monster and horror comics from the 1970s. Go to Amazon
Four Stars Read in small does it is fun - art is great but the stories don't age well! Go to Amazon
Excellent! Excellent! Go to Amazon
A TON of fun!!! Admittedly, I'm not a fan of the Marvel Omnibus books... they are just entirely too big and heavy, IMO. I was a much bigger fan of the Masterworks series. Granted, I picked up a few of the slimmer Omnibus books ( Go to Amazon
Monsters Vol. 1 is a jewel What a joy it is to see these great stories from my youth once again. I actually remember where I was when I first read the story about the giant ants. I was in the back seat of the family Chevy on a marathon trip from Chicago to Dayton. So many monsters - so little time. Go to Amazon
Magnificent Monsters! This is an absolutely incredible book. Jack Kirby's monster stories from the early sixties are some of his best. The sheer number of fantastic creatures he came up with is staggering while Stan Lee and Larry Lieber were at their most inventive. I used to read these stories back in the 70s when they were reprinted in "Monsters on the Prowl" and "Creatures on the Loose". They were wonderful then and they are even better now. So satisfying to see these long slumbering beasts return in such a properly gigantic edition. Go to Amazon
To Be Able To Hold those Wonderful Stories Of My Youth Again !!!! This book had everything going for it. It arrived on time and under budget !!! To hold those stories again that occupied so many hours of my youth again brought tears of joy to these old eyes. I thought I was never going to get to see some of them again as they were almost too eclectic to be reprinted. Great quality paper, excellent reprinted material, quality vibrant color, and 825 wonderful pages of material. I have already pre-ordered Vol 2. and can't await it's arrival. If there is enough material for a volume 3 you can count me in for it. Beats having to buy the smaller Marvel Masterpiece Tales To Astonish, Strange Tales, And Journey Into Mystery. Haven't see a volume this good since Steve Ditko's Adult Fantasy collection by Marvel. Go to Amazon
Pure gold! Go to Amazon
Brings back a more innocent time Great stuff; good production values too GREAT! Worth the price. Nobody Draws Monsters Like Jack Kirby! Great book - BUT only one story from each issue ...

Pulp Fiction
Tumblr media
2019 saw the release of Quentin Tarantino’s ninth written and directed film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It won me over like most of Quentin’s work and I instantly picked it up when it hit home video several weeks ago, but that is for a future entry. I reference the slightly belated latest release from Quentin so I can piggyback off it to catch up on another backlog box entry from a previous Quentin joint I upgraded to BluRay several years ago and did not get to pulling out of said box until now. That film is Tarantino’s movie that launched him into his first worldwide commercial and critical success in 1994’s Pulp Fiction (trailer). I have not seen the film since shortly after I got my original DVD copy as a birthday gift some 16-17 years ago, so a re-watch has been long overdue. For those unfamiliar, Quentin was riding high from the indie breakout success of his debut feature directed film, Reservoir Dogs (which I already covered right here). His unique filmmaking attracted A-list star attention, and Pulp Fiction brought in Bruce Willis, transitioned Samuel L Jackson and Uma Thurman into top level stars and re-introduced John Travolta as Hollywood-headliner material. An intro title card defines the meaning of ‘Pulp Fiction’ and it is how Quentin takes us for a ride on four tales of about 30-40 minutes in length each that each has their own unique gritty journeys that occasionally interweave with one another.
Tumblr media
One of its iconic scenes is where gangster hit men Vincent (John Travolta) and Jules (Samuel L Jackson) have a seemingly ordinary back-and-fourth water cooler-esque conversation about Vincent’s recent vacation. The banter comes off very workman-like and they have a vintage Tarantino-style lengthy dialogue until they arrive at their destination which turns out to be a hit on a few targets who double-crossed their boss, Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames). How the two seamlessly pivot from everyday chit-chat into their job description is remarkable and Tarantino pulls it off with aplomb. The film then segues to Vincent taking Wallace’s wife, Mia (Uma Thurman) out for a night on the town. It is highlighted with the two eating at an extraordinary 50s-themed diner, Jackrabbit Slims, where the two enter into a dance contest that sees Travolta retained his dance skills from Grease and Uma able and willing to keep up in another evergreen scene. I had a riot checking out the alternative angle b-roll from this scene in the BluRay extras that sees a sweat-soaked Quentin enthusiastically dancing along about as well as I could (which is not very well at all, but dammit he is into it!) in the background.
Tumblr media
From there the film focuses on boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) and how he not only ignores Wallace’s orders to throw a fight, but unknowingly kills his opponent in the ring. Him and his wife, Fabienne (Maria de Medeiros) are then on the run until they realize Butch’s prized possession (masterfully explained in a flashback cameo from Christopher Walken) was forgotten at home. The unfolding aftermath where Butch goes to retrieve the item knowing that hitmen are on the prowl for him, and the whole world of out-of-nowhere hurt that transpires for both him and Wallace is the most gripping material in Pulp Fiction. After Butch’s tale concludes, the film jumps back to Vincent and Jules again from where it left off before after they finished the job, and follows Jules questioning his lifestyle until fate lands the pair in multiple precarious scenarios and saves the most pivotal dialogue in the entire picture until the very end that succeeded in once again in me finishing the movie floored by taking in this entire journey and thinking hard over Jules’ climactic final words. Another reason I wanted to re-watch Pulp Fiction for a while now is that Chris Jericho and Kevin Smith collaborated their podcasts to do a two-part commentary for the movie. The podcasting veterans have a nonstop dialogue, and Smith has a lot of useful filmmaking insights to add since his debut film, Clerks, also hit from Miramax in 1994 and both Smith and Tarantino were being billed as the next great wave of filmmakers. I admittedly wound up ignoring large chunks of the commentary though because I was reinvigorated from re-watching Pulp Fiction for the first time in nearly two decades and taking in all of Quentin’s elaborate verbiage exchanges again.
Tumblr media
The BluRay is jacked with bonuses, both new and recycled from the DVD. Not the Usual Chit-Chat is the standout new HD extra where most of the cast touches on how they first met Quentin and how they landed the role and key production memories. Travolta’s memories I got the most out of from how he said Quentin gave him the boost he need to get back on top of his career and additional details on the aforementioned dance scene. Here are Some Facts on the Fiction is another BluRay exclusive extra with a roundtable discussion where five critics dissect their key takeaways from the film which brought a whole new perspective on the importance of Pulp Fiction to me. There are a surplus of carried over extras from the DVDs like fact tracks, deleted scenes, photo galleries, award speeches, press tour junkets and previous interviews. The two I want to emphasize though are an episode of Siskel & Ebert at the Movies covering Quentin’s early fame. Watching this again made me forget how much I dug the classic Siskel & Ebert show and this is the only movie I can recall that used segments of that classic film review show as a home video extra. A near hour long episode of the The Charlie Rose Show is also included where Quentin and Rose have a discussion about Quentin’s background and influences with a couple heated exchanges when Rose follows up Quentin on some pressing details. What was not carried over from the original DVD release is the special edition packaging, and Criterion Edition-esque booklet filled with critic essays from Entertainment Weekly and on-set photography. A replica Jack Rabbit Slims menu also did not get bundled with the BluRay, and all this is reason enough for me to retain my DVD copy.
Tumblr media
I would be remiss if I did not mention my desire for the Tarantino commentary track he is notorious skipping out on for his own films. That, and the lack of original packaging and insert booklets are my only nitpicks with this otherwise excellent BluRay edition of Pulp Fiction. Tarantino is my favorite director, and being a big fan of most of his films makes it hard to rank Pulp Fiction, but it is definitely at or near the top. Watching it all these years later and I found no problem with it not holding up, and it only got better with age watching this now in my mid-30s compared to back in my early 20s. This is an important piece of cinema that put an exclamation point on Tarantino’s style and revolutionized cinema. For you youngins’ this is highest recommendation viewing if you have not seen it already. COMIC REVIEW: MONSTERS UNLEASHED! Vol. 2 #1 by Cullen Bunn (Marvel)
So it’s no secret that kaiju are, right now, getting very popular again. Popular enough for Marvel to decide that they want in on some of the giant monster action. Fortunately for them they have a home field advantage. You see back in the 1950s and 60s - while superhero books were under the McCarthyism-style scrutiny of pop-psychologists for subverting conservative American values - Marvel launched several titles like MONSTERS ON THE PROWL and WHERE MONSTERS DWELL dedicated to non-superhero stories about regular men and women facing down colossal creatures. Eventually however the superheroes came back and the monsters were pushed out - or in many cases kicked out as they were reduced to oversized punching bags for the likes of The Fantastic Four (seriously look at the cover of Fantastic Four #1 - it was the end of an era).
So when Marvel announced late last year that were going to be reviving their MONSTERS UNLEASHED! title I had every reason to expect it to be more of the same. Here are some classic monsters - watch The Avengers punch them, isn’t this fun? Or worse they could end up like poor Devil Dinosaur playing second fiddle to some precocious tween (As I’ve said before if you know a 13-year-old girl that is interested in science and dinosaurs you should be having them read Marvel’s MOON GIRL & DEVIL DINOSAUR on-going series. It’s a great book for them. It’s not a great book for a 29-year-old dinosaur loving guy however). All that changed however when they announced that writer Cullen Bunn would be in charge of the new MONSTERS UNLEASHED! series.
Bunn is best known for his original comic series THE SIXTH GUN - a horror Western - but he’s also worked on IDW’s Godzilla comic series and created the original series TERRIBLE LIZARD which is a much better version of the idea of a comic about a tweenage girl and her T.Rex and the various misadventures they get into and predates Marvel’s Devil Dinosaur and Moon Girl series by more then a year. The point however is that Bunn knows monsters so it felt like a safe bet putting a new giant monster centric series in his charge.
And that leads us up to this: MONSTERS UNLEASHED! Vol. 2 #1 which hit comic book store shelves today. Vol. 2 you might say? Yes technically there are five issues of MU! which precede this one. I don’t own them but I did read them. They basically have a bunch of Marvel superheroes running around the globe punching monsters - the exact thing I didn’t want. Fortunately it’s all a setup. By issue #3 the superheroes have figured out that this problem - giant monsters appearing all over the world - is too tall an order for them. Plus they aren’t very effective against them. Fortunately there is someone who is. An 11-year-old Japanese-American kid named Kei Kawade: a.k.a. Kid Kaiju. Kei is obessed with kaiju and knows everything about them. Even more importantly he can talk to them and summon them at will by drawing their likeness in his sketchbook. The superheroes decide that their best option is to turn the giant monster fighting business over to Kei and his team of five kaiju and that is where this issue picks up.
I’m happy to report that the first issue of MU! is pretty solid stuff. While set in the Marvel Universe the superhero stuff is thus far virtually nonexistent or kept in the background. The story is solely focused on Kei and his kaiju hanging out and fighting other giant beasts. Though clearly different from the classic Marvel giant monster books of yesteryear it is still refreshing to see a book focused on the monsters and that treats these creatures with some respect. Kei - and his bodyguard Monster Huntress Extraordinaire Elsa Bloodstone - are also nice protagonists in that they are fairly normal humans rather then out-and-out superheroes with secret identities and costumes and all that jazz. The art by David Baldeon and Marco Menyz is also very solid. Everything is very well drawn and colored. There’s nothing special about it but nothing to complain about either.
So right now I’m firmly enjoying Marvel's new MONSTERS UNLEASHED! series and am looking forward to Issue #2. In fact the only thing that might dissuade me from picking up next month’s installment is that Marvel’s comics are full of ads (unlike, say, Dark Horse’s) and it’s quite annoying trying to read a story with an ad for a different comic or video game or movie being interjected every other page. Considering that - I might just wait for the trade.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely (A Curse So Dark and Lonely #1) by Brigid Kemmerer
Fall in love, break the curse.
It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.
Nothing has ever been easy for Harper Lacy. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she’s instead somehow sucked into Rhen’s cursed world.
Break the curse, save the kingdom.
A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn’t know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what’s at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

Beautiful Mistake by Vi Keeland
The first time I met Caine West was in a bar. He noticed me looking his way and mistakenly read my scowling as checking him out. When he attempted to talk to me, I set him straight—telling him what I thought of his lying, cheating, egomaniacal ass. You see, the gorgeous jerk had wined and dined my best friend–smooth talking her into his bed, all along failing to mention that he was married. He deserved every bit of my tongue-lashing and more for what he’d done. Especially when that lazy smile graced his perfect face in response to my rant. Only it turned out, the man I’d just told off wasn’t the right guy. Oops. My mistake. Embarrassed, I slunk out without an apology. I was never going to see the handsome stranger again anyway, right? That’s what I thought…until I walked into class the next morning. Well, hello Professor West, I’m your new teaching assistant. I’ll be working under you…figuratively speaking. Although the literal interpretation might not be such a bad thing—working under Professor West. This was going to be interesting…
Reckless by Lex Martin
Reckless features Tori and Ethan and is a standalone companion to the USA Today bestseller Shameless.
Tori… For the record, I’m not going to hook up with my boss.
I’m a lot of things—a screwup, a basket case, a flunky. But when I take a nanny job to be near my pregnant sister, I swear to myself I’ll walk the straight and narrow, which means I cannot fall for my insanely hot boss.
I don’t want to be tempted by that rugged rancher. By his chiseled muscles or southern charm or the way he snuggles his kids at bedtime. Ethan Carter won’t get the key to my heart, no matter how much I want him.
Ethan… Between us, she’s the last thing I need as I finalize my hellish divorce.
What sane man trying to rebuild his life wants a hot nanny with long, sexy hair, curves for miles, and a smart mouth? A perfectly kissable, pouty mouth that I shouldn’t notice.
My focus is on my kids and my ranch, not the insufferable siren who sleeps in the room next to mine. It doesn’t matter that she wins over my kids in a heartbeat or runs my life better than I do. Tori Duran is the one woman I can’t have and shouldn’t want, no matter how much I crave her.

A Study in Charlotte (Charlotte Holmes #1) by Brittany Cavallaro
The last thing Jamie Watson wants is a rugby scholarship to Sherringford, a Connecticut prep school just an hour away from his estranged father. But that’s not the only complication: Sherringford is also home to Charlotte Holmes, the famous detective’s great-great-great-granddaughter, who has inherited not only Sherlock’s genius but also his volatile temperament. From everything Jamie has heard about Charlotte, it seems safer to admire her from afar.
From the moment they meet, there’s a tense energy between them, and they seem more destined to be rivals than anything else. But when a Sherringford student dies under suspicious circumstances, ripped straight from the most terrifying of the Sherlock Holmes stories, Jamie can no longer afford to keep his distance. Jamie and Charlotte are being framed for murder, and only Charlotte can clear their names. But danger is mounting and nowhere is safe—and the only people they can trust are each other.

The Looking Glass Wars (The Looking Glass Wars #1) by Frank Beddor
Alyss of Wonderland? When Alyss Heart, newly orphaned heir to the Wonderland throne, flees through the Pool of Tears to escape her murderous Aunt Redd, she finds herself lost and alone in Victorian London. Befriended by an aspiring author named Lewis Carrol, Alyss tells the violent, heartbreaking story of her young life. Alyss trusts this author to tell the truth so that someone, somewhere will find her and bring her home. But he gets the story all wrong. He even spells her name incorrectly!
Fortunately, Royal Bodyguard Hatter Madigan knows all too well the awful truth of Alyss’ story – and he’s searching every corner of our world to find the lost princess and return her to Wonderland, to battle Redd for her rightful place as the Queen of Hearts.
The Looking Glass Wars unabashedly challenges our Wonderland assumptions of mad tea parties, grinning Cheshire cats, and a curious little blond girl to reveal an epic battle in the endless war for Imagination.

Seeing Redd (The Looking Glass Wars #2) by Frank Beddor
Alyss of Wonderland’s rule has only just begun, and already those who prefer chaos to peace are threatening to destroy everything worth imagining. Trailed by newly appointed royal bodyguard Homburg Molly, Alyss is doing her best to keep pace with the non-stop demands of being queen while attempting to evade Molly for a few private moments with Dodge.
Alyss’ life is a challenging mix of duty, love, and tough decisions, and then a series of phantom sightings set fire to an urban myth of Her Imperial Viciousness’ return and have everyone… seeing Redd.
Has Redd somehow freed herself and her chief assassin, The Cat, from the confines of the Heart Crystal? If not, then who has resurrected Redd’s brutal foot soldiers the Glass Eyes and set them loose to attack Wonderland on all sides?
Battles rage, looking glasses explode, and the Alyssians once again unite to defend White Imagination in this fast-paced follow-up to the New York Times best-selling The Looking Glass Wars.
Sadie by Courtney Summers
A missing girl on a journey of revenge. A Serial―like podcast following the clues she’s left behind. And an ending you won’t be able to stop talking about.
Sadie hasn’t had an easy life. Growing up on her own, she’s been raising her sister Mattie in an isolated small town, trying her best to provide a normal life and keep their heads above water.
But when Mattie is found dead, Sadie’s entire world crumbles. After a somewhat botched police investigation, Sadie is determined to bring her sister’s killer to justice and hits the road following a few meager clues to find him.
When West McCray―a radio personality working on a segment about small, forgotten towns in America―overhears Sadie’s story at a local gas station, he becomes obsessed with finding the missing girl. He starts his own podcast as he tracks Sadie’s journey, trying to figure out what happened, hoping to find her before it’s too late.
Courtney Summers has written the breakout book of her career. Sadie is propulsive and harrowing and will keep you riveted until the last page.

ArchEnemy (The Looking Glass Wars #3) by Frank Beddor
Imagine this… The power of imagination has been lost!
Now it’s all about the artillery as AD52s, crystal shooters, spikejack tumblers, and orb cannons are unleashed in a war of weapons and brute force.
As Alyss searches wildly for the solution to the disaster that has engulfed her queendom, Arch declares himself King of Wonderland. The moment is desperate enough for Alyss to travel back to London for answers, where Arch’s assassins are threatening Alice Liddell and her family. But after coming to the Liddells’ assistance, Alyss discovers herself trapped in a conundrum of evaporating puddles. The shimmering portals that exist to transport her home through the Pool of Tears are disappearing!
What is happening in Wonderland? Deep within the Valley of Mushroom the Caterpillar Oracles issue this prophecy: “Action shall be taken to ensure the safety of the Heart Crystal. For Everqueen.” But who is Everqueen?
As the metamorphosis of Wonderland unfolds, enemies become allies, bitter rivals face off, and Queen Alyss and Redd Heart must both confront their pasts in this thrilling, no-holds-barred conclusion to the New York Times bestselling series.

Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows #2) by Leigh Bardugo

Double-crossed and badly weakened, the crew is low on resources, allies, and hope. As powerful forces from around the world descend on Ketterdam to root out the secrets of the dangerous drug known as jurda parem, old rivals and new enemies emerge to challenge Kaz’s cunning and test the team’s fragile loyalties.
A war will be waged on the city’s dark and twisting streets – a battle for revenge and redemption that will decide the fate of the Grisha world.

The Bone Witch (The Bone Witch #1) by Rin Chupeco
In the captivating start to a new, darkly lyrical fantasy series for readers of Leigh Bardugo and Sabaa Tahir, Tea can raise the dead, but resurrection comes at a price…
Let me be clear: I never intended to raise my brother from his grave, though he may claim otherwise. If there’s anything I’ve learned from him in the years since, it’s that the dead hide truths as well as the living.
When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she’s a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.
In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha-one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles…and make a powerful choice.

But as odd as everyone considers Miel and Sam, even they stay away from the Bonner girls, four beautiful sisters rumored to be witches. Now they want the roses that grow from Miel’s skin, convinced that their scent can make anyone fall in love.
Nobody Draws Monsters Like Jack Kirby! This volume collects all of Jack Kirby's artwork for the Pre-Marvel fantasy and science fiction comics from December 1956 through July 1961. The stories by Stan Lee and Larry Lieber are fun, but somewhat silly, as is typical for comics of this era, which were aimed at 7 to 12 year old kids. Many of these tales are fondly remembered by fans who grew up with them in the 50's and 60's or discovered them through reprint titles like "Monsters on the Prowl" in the 70's. We even get to see the origin of Groot, now a member of the surprise hit "Guardians of the Galaxy" films. The artwork is beautifully reproduced on good quality paper, with vibrant colors. Most people will not miss the stories by Paul Reinman and Don Heck that were omitted from this collection. It would be nice to have an omnibus collection of the 5-pagers by Steve Ditko. I have already pre-ordered Monsters Vol. 2. I highly recommend this book. Go to Amazon
Excellent fun, highly recommended As a child of the 1980s, these Stan Lee/Jack Kirby monster comics were first published decades before my birth. But I saw occasional reprints of these stories in monster and horror comics from the 1970s. Go to Amazon
Brings back a more innocent time Just in time for Halloween, a horde of old-fashioned comic book monsters -- and monsters drawn by Jack Kirby, no less! Go to Amazon
Great stuff; good production values too Every comic fan of a certain age remembers these nutty monster stories dreamed up by Jack Kirby, Larry Lieber and Stan Lee. It's so refreshing to avoid the over-written, self-important Marvel and DC stories of today. Simple tales of plucky earthlings fending off enormous monstrosities from other worlds and dimensions, as well as misbegotten corners of our world. Great stuff; good production values too. I give this book an A. Go to Amazon
WHERE THE HECK IS FIN FANG FOOM?! Loved seeing all the old creatures from my childhood. Only one things keep me from five-starring them--the absence of Marvel's greatest monster Fin Fang Foom in his return appearance. Vol II of course had him on the cover with original story but not his revival. I had hoped Vol 2 would have have the sequel but wasn't there either. Come on guys, Groot is popular now turned into good tree-creature for the movies but Fin Fang Foom is the best or you wouldn't have put him on cover of Vol. 2. Surely you could have cut one of the mud creature's appearances or the giant turtle. Fin was so popular, he was first Marvel monster to cross over to series arc in "Iron Man" under the bidding of The Mandarin. Is there going to be a Vol. 3? Go to Amazon
This is a must have Well worth the money if you like these old time comic monster stories. Kind of corny, but always enjoyable. Great artwork and classic stories the kind you will never see written again. Go to Amazon
Excellent! Four Stars GREAT! Worth the price. Pure gold! Great book - BUT only one story from each issue ... To Be Able To Hold those Wonderful Stories Of My Youth Again !!!! A TON of fun!!!

Great book - BUT only one story from each issue ... Great book - BUT only one story from each issue is presented. WOuld of been nice to get a couple - but then again the book would be three times the size and cost. Not good for night reading as the book is so massive/heavy. Also, you might want ot take off the dust cover as you are reading it so as not to tear it. Can't wait for the 2nd volume. Go to Amazon
