Are you ready to conformal coat? Here’s why you might want to know.

Over the holidays, I had occasion to watch a National Geographic documentary on the April 2019 fire that took place in the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. A segment of the show touched on how the city fire department utilized an unmanned, 1,110 lb. fire-fighting machine, lovingly called the Colossus, to enter parts of the inferno unsafe for human firefighters. Not only was this advanced unit charged with discharging 660 gallons of water per minute into the blaze and providing a live video feed and sensor data to provide valuable insights on the fire’s progress to nearby fire chiefs - it had to perform these and other duties under the duress of incredible heat, drenched in water, and withstanding various impacts and vibration from falling or fallen debris, including molten lead from the cathedral’s lead roof. Talk about hostile workplaces!* * You can read more about and see the Colossus in action, here. Needless to say, the story brought to mind the advances the electronics industry has made and continues to make in the arenas of mobility, connectivity, processing, and - especially in this instance - durability. After all, machines like this don’t just happen: From major systems, to sub-assemblies, to individual components, on down the line — they are painstakingly designed, spec’d, and built to perform in adverse conditions. Which brought to mind the increased importance of the protection afforded by conformal coatings. What is conformal coating? Conformal coating involves spraying or immersing a printed circuit board (PCB) or PCB assembly in a protective coating - in much the same way that a car manufacture or service shop applies a coating undercarriage of your car. The applied material ‘conforms’ to the irregular surface or landscape of a PCBA, including surface-mounted components, solder points, raised or etched circuits, component leads, through-holes, and more. Once applied, applied conformal coatings must dry or cure for a suitable period of time before additional processing, assembly, quality control, or other tasks can proceed. Once applied, such coatings can protect against any number of strains your circuit may encounter in the real world, including: -Moisture, oils, chemicals, solvents -Thermal stresses, including extreme heat and cold Vibration, abrasion, physical impacts, handling during shipping, regular use, or service -Dust, dirt, grime -Ultraviolet (UV) exposure and degradation -Unexpected electric shocks (transient voltage surges, aka: lightening), shorts, and static electricity -Radiation What are conformal coatings made of? Conformal coatings or ‘resins’ come in a variety of compositions to match your unique application or performance goals. While other materials are available, including a new breed of ‘nano’ coatings, the three major types of traditional coating material options are: -Apoxy Resin (AR) is a rigid coating that offers basic, low-cost dust and moisture protection. Apoxies are, though, susceptible to chemical solvents, which makes it easier to intentionally remove the coating to do rework and field repairs easier, even if it also makes them less-than-ideal for caustic industrial settings. -Silicone Resin (SR) is a flexible, hydro-repellent material suitable for high-vibration and/or outdoor environments. SR-based coatings also have excellent dielectric properties, so they can help isolate high-voltage (aka: eliminate arcing) or, inversely, help protect static-sensitive components or PCBAs. -Urethane Resin (UR) is a hard coating that offers even better moisture and chemical resistance than SR- and AR-comprised coatings, which makes them a frequent choice in mission-critical aerospace, defense, avionics, or medical applications. Key considerations of conformal coating For a material that measures only 1-5 microns in thickness - the particulars of conformal coating composition, characteristics, and application require a deeper discussion than this blog post allows. That said, I can say choosing the right conformal coating for your unique application can be guided by five high-level considerations: -What kind of protection do you require? As outlined above, different conformal coatings offer different levels of protection. To pick the right one for your project, list and rank your priorities - permeability to moisture, chemical resistance, dielectric performance, ability to withstand or adjust to thermal contractions/expansions, vibration, and so on - and then work with your PCBA supplier to choose the right one for your job. -What sort of production process or timing are you working with? Are you working with small volumes where application of the coating can be manual, or high-volume runs that demand automation? Can your production schedule withstand long or short conformal coating curing times? What sort of quality system regimen do you or your customer demand to ensure repeatability? These and other production and process aspects should be accounted for when choosing your conformal coating. Speaking of QA, will your PCB, assembly, or finished device have compliance requirements? Individual customers may have proprietary specs or requirements, but most applications for conformal coated PCBs and PCBAs are commonly assessed against two prominent, namely IPC-CC-830B (or MIL-I-46058C) and UL746E. -Will the end device or equipment require rework or even allow for in-the-field repairs? If so, some coatings are better suited than others. -What’s the budget? No surprise that a hard-nosed cost/benefit analysis will be needed in choosing your conformal coatings, just as it does with every other item on your BOM. Thankfully, the wide range of conformal resins, application techniques, and suppliers - and availability of emerging coating options - all but ensure there is an option to suit your task without too many trade-offs. Which applications require conformal coating? The length of this blog here again precludes an exhaustive analysis of environments and applications that would benefit from resin-coated electronics. Still, my opening story of the Colossus fire-fighting machine makes clear some emerging applications are particularly well-suited to ruggedized electronics enabled by conformal coated circuits. For instance: -Unmanned vehicles - Robots with fire-fighting capabilities are just the beginning of this fast-growing field. (Come to think of it, I wonder if any were or could have been used to save lives and property during the Oregon wildfires that plagued CST’s own region last July?) Similar equipment is being applied in mines, sites of industrial accidents, war zones and law enforcement applications, and deep-sea, arctic, and space exploration, among other extreme environments. -Internet of Things (IoT) - Enabled by nearly ubiquitous broadband access (including 5G), connected sensor networks, and insatiable demand for/insights from big data and machine learning are also driving electronic devices into harsh and remote environments: Think of far-flung water, gas, and oil pumps; all-season sensors deployed across forests, farm fields, and water systems; traffic, vibration, and erosion sensors dispersed across interstate highways, bridges, rail systems, and cityscapes. -Communications infrastructure - Having mentioned how communications networks are drawing IoT technology into challenging environments, the same can be said for the infrastructure comprising those networks themselves. Base stations, cell towers, satellite dishes, antennae, mobile wireless equipment, and even satellites are subjected to a wide range of environmental stresses, making them key candidates for conformal coatings among other protective measures. -Handheld technology - Aided by miniaturization, innovative packaging solutions, and IoT connectivity mentioned above, handheld devices and other types of portable equipment are also driving technology into environments requiring ruggedization techniques like conformal coating. I finally finished Witch’s Apprentice

So you remember that obscure, mobile app game for The Owl House on DisneyNOW that I briefly reviewed? And how I couldn’t finish it because the game just sort of trapped me in a limbo with an Emperor’s Guard and his hostage, King?

Well FINALLY, the game let me continue after I tried booting it up again for like, the third of fourth time after a while. What happens next is that Eda instructs you to go on those Fetch-8 quests a few more times, I can’t remember how many; You grab vines and spiders and whatnot, and then you have to grab these Fire Crystals;

(I wonder if they’ll have relevance in the show later on, or if they’re made purely for this game)

Then the trap is set, and you go chase after the Emperor’s Guard. It’s the same layout as a fetch-quest, but instead of looking for items, you have to get to the end of the level to find the guard. Along the way, you can use the Ice Potion (which comes up as a button prompt whenever you come near a situation requiring it)-

-to either create moving cloud platforms, and scatter crowds of small, flying demons; I can’t remember which, maybe it was both. I dunno I wasn’t paying THAT much attention, this was more like a chore for me to finish, a chore that was over-heating my phone so I needed it done ASAP. There are also moving, flying-rug platforms now.

As soon as you catch up to the Emperor’s Guard, who has King on his back, he just... yeets himself outta there and you end the level by going into Eda’s portal to the human world, except it takes you back to the Owl House for some reason? None of the other levels ended like this, what’s the point? To pad out gameplay? It doesn’t mean much since the door is RIGHT BEHIND the guard... You do this twice, and then one more time. But the third and final time, you have an ‘ultimate trap’ set, where you go onto a ledge above the guard and press the button prompt. A cage of thorny vines falls over him, the levels end with Luz fist-pumping through the air as always, and you’re back at the Owl House!

Eda thanks you alongside King, Hooty comes in to recite his poem while everyone else groans, and you get a ‘Thanks for playing’ message that I was honestly relieved to see. Now my phone will no longer have to go through this torment (Seriously, the heating issue is like 90% why I have a problem playing this game, otherwise it’d have only taken me two sessions, one before and another after that weird glitch)!

All in all, it was an okay game. If you return and head downstairs, Eda tells you to go looking for more relics, AKA those side-quests that have a ‘relic’ at the end that’s relevant to one of the episodes. Alas, no new relics, although I have to wonder what Adventures in the Elements’ relic will be; The Training Wand? The teddy bear that King animated, or the potion he used? But, yeah- Once you finish the main campaign, it’s doing the individual relic quests, and then waiting for new episodes to bring a new relic each. It’s not much, and Witch’s Apprentice was a tedious, boring game that got incredibly repetitive. I ended as a Rank 7 Witch, but somewhere along the way I felt a little relieved but also proud to finally be done with it!

Not much of an experience... But it’s Owl House content, so again- I’ll take what I can get. If you’re every really bored with nothing to do and your phone doesn’t have over-heating issues, maybe give it a try; Just mute the game during the actual gameplay segments, that constantly looping track gets maddening after a while. Otherwise, turn the volume back up for the characters’ actual voices from the show, and... that’s about it!

There’s a reason why percussion is the oldest form of music in the world; we are naturally tuned to find rhythms. Attempt to disrupt a beat and you’ll probably find yourself simply creating a new pattern. Syncopation is, after all, simply the intentional disruption of a rhythm to create the desired effect. Thumper has no jumpscares, and though the survival aspect of survival horror is very present this isn’t a slow and methodical creep-around-corners-and-hide-in-closets journey. Thumper is fast and deadly and violent in a metallic and bloodless but terribly visceral way. Thumper deals in the horror of the unknown, a Lovecraftian insignificance amidst the cosmos horror. Here you’ll find the creeping dread of uncertainty, of knowing that no matter how strange and unsettling the things just got, what comes next is probably going to be worse in a way that you can’t possibly foresee. This is probably why Thumper is a little difficult to describe.

None of this really captures the full extent of what it is to actually play Thumper. Perhaps we can start again with the controls. It’s simple: one button and four directions. Your beetle will encounter glowing panels on the rail. Press the button when you pass over to create a bass thump. Holding the thump button tucks your shiny beetle body tighter into the track and lets you safely grind around turns and break through barriers. Two levels into the game, you learn that you can leap into the air to hover over spike traps and hit floating rings to snag more points. Three levels in, you’re taught to slam back down onto the thump pads while you’re in the air, sending a wave of distortion down the track. You’d do this to break the barriers some bosses will put up, and to create combos for more points if your timing is good. Later on, the rail will occasionally split into multiple lanes. You’ll need to flit between lanes to hit thumps and dodge obstacles, and jump back onto the right lane when they recombine into one. The controls are simple and the pace at which the game introduces new mechanics is gentle. It’s very easy to pick up and play, but from around Level 4 onwards Thumper takes the kid gloves off and cranks the intensity to the max.

Fortunately, it’s possible to simply survive your way through this game. Perfection isn’t required to progress, and, besides, perfection is difficult to achieve at the speed at which Thumper moves. Missing the thumps might cause you to lose your combo, but it won’t kill you. Running into a corner without turning in the right direction or hitting an obstacle, on the other hand, deals damage. In later levels a ring will occasionally appear around the track for short periods of time, zapping you with lasers if you miss a thump. The first hit causes you to lose your outer shell. The second hit kills you. Each of the game’s nine levels is divided into a number of sections, with checkpoints between. Either way, now you’re required to hit all the thump pads in a segment of track that will begin repeating itself until you either get the pattern right or die. Thump all the pads in a segment and you get a special, brightly-glowing one that causes you to fire a blast of energy at the boss. The mere mechanics of the game don’t really do it justice either. The tight and simple controls are part of the whole thing, certainly, but it’s the game’s unrelenting aesthetic crossed with responsive controls, a visceral sense of feedback, the sheer sense of speed and, most importantly, a rock-solid understanding of rhythm that makes it all work. The beats that you, the player, the beetle are hitting aren’t necessarily going to be “on the beat” with the music. The developer duo Drool know how to play with a rhythm, how to syncopate, sub-divide, and subvert a beat. The thumps, slams, slides and ticks that the player makes as they speed along the track overlay and then weave into not only the background drones and beats but also the sounds that the various obstacles make as they appear on the track. There’s an important element of call-and-response to this game, with the various obstacles signaling their presence a (musical) bar before you need to react to them. In later levels the nearly-subconscious recognition of these aural cues is essential as obstacles come fast and thick, the track itself twisting, turning and obscuring obstacles until the last moment. It might even be possible to play this game with your eyes closed, though I personally wouldn’t attempt it.

The moment that Thumper really clicked for me, though, was when I returned to earlier levels to replay them with the knowledge and reflexes I’d learned from later levels. It was when I started really playing the earlier levels, not simply surviving them, that I started feeling a mix of apprehension, elation and flow. Thumper is possibly the only rhythm game in the world to make me feel like I was actually performing live music. Performing live music is to pour everything you have into a brief period of time in which everything could go wrong. Preparation can only take you so far. When you’re performing you are not only turning rote-remembered skills into a form of self-expression, you’re reacting and adjusting to your instrument and the performances of other performers moment by moment. Thumper creates that feeling by reducing nearly everything to percussion, thus tying all the sounds the player makes to the game’s simple controls. Playing Thumper means creating a piece of music which corresponds directly to your actions. Thumper builds on this by giving the player leeway to add their own flair, to increase risk and reward by adding aerial thumps and going for perfect turns. The beat will go on whether or not you hit all the cues, but there is a satisfaction in not only playing your part of the music but playing it well. You hear what seemed like a series of random obstacles turn into an entirely new section of the soundtrack, performed by you.

Some might express disappointment that Thumper doesn’t offer the sort of endless replayability that a game like Audiosurf provides. Thumper can’t dynamically parse custom music files, but, really, that misses the point of Thumper. Every element of Thumper, from the oppressive soundtrack to the placement of every obstacle to the responsive controls to the stark and alien visuals is designed to create a singular experience. The end result is something strange and unsettling. Thumper doesn’t gently coax the player into a flow state, it instead pushes you onto the edge of the precipice and challenges you to thrive there. The game may only require gentle taps and presses, but I’d find my thumb getting sore partway through a level through sheer tension and wouldn’t even notice until the level finished. I wouldn’t recommend playing for extended periods of time unless you want your arms to lock up out of stress. The mounting fear of what comes next is countered by the demands imposed by Thumper’s speed. You either focus and become one with the beat, reacting to and perhaps even overcoming everything the void throws at you, or else you crash and explode. You may never fully understand the hows, whys, whats and wheres of your situation, but you can still plunge into that abyss and master the rhythm. Perhaps you might even find some sort of meaning in the act of thumping itself.

Oh, and high scores. There’s a leaderboard for each level and all sorts of little nuances to eking out a high score, just in case you didn’t feel intimidated enough by the hellish void. If you like pushing your thumbs and reflexes to the limit, that’s for you.
