But it’s also a time when shopping lists get cluttered with all the best stuff, and it becomes easy to succumb to the consumerist frenzy that surrounds “the most wonderful time of the year.” In many ways,…

Therapists say mental health suffered in COVID-19 pandemic | News, Sports, Jobs
Tumblr media
Lingering effects of the pandemic are keeping local therapists busy as they help clients cope with the losses of last year and transition back to normal as COVID-19 restrictions subside.
“Many of the therapists in Maui that I have talked with reported a surge in psychiatric symptoms in people with and without a history of mental illness during 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has been taking a toll on residents’ financial and emotional well-being,” said Dr. David Wittenberg of Behavioral Health Services of Maui LLC. “I saw an increase in fear of the future, poverty with multiple family members working for resorts and certain people leaving the island.”
Maui Behavioral Health Resources encompasses three agencies — Aloha House, Malama Family Recovery Center and Maui Youth and Family Services.
Wittenberg, who co-manages Aloha House’s crisis services, case management services, Maui Counseling Group and intensive in-home therapy services for youth, said that he consulted with many psychiatrists and psychologists, as well as other licensed and non-licensed providers on the issue.
They cited an overall increase in anxiety, depression, substance abuse, insomnia, weight gain and other conditions this past year, some of which may linger as the pandemic subsides.
Maui Counseling Group therapists served 1,067 clients in April, increasing by about 10 calls per month since February. The crisis team conducts about 100 mobile outreach calls per month through the state crisis line, and case management staff have over 400 clients with a severe mental illness who are provided services.
Adult crisis calls increased each month during the pandemic, with February and March calls the highest in the four years during those months. Youth crisis calls decreased, partially because many of the calls that Aloha House would handle were from the state Department of Education. Since DOE schools were closed, calls dropped.
However, calls are starting to increase again and “we are concerned that these numbers might rise quite a bit,” Wittenberg said last month.
“The nature and scale of this unprecedented pandemic has impacted so many people in Maui County,” he added. “There are still many families that have stayed in a type of extended isolation.”
Clients who already had a therapist prior to the pandemic are “generally doing better” since they have been able to use the support that was already in place, “which underlies the importance of starting and maintaining therapy for vulnerable people,” Wittenberg said.
Fortunately for some, mental health effects of the pandemic were mitigated by government support programs like the stimulus checks, eviction moratorium and mortgage forbearance.
“When and if these programs are lifted, we anticipate the mental health landscape might change again,” he said.
Many families are still recovering from the struggles of last year as parents go back to their jobs and students prepare to head back to daily in-person instruction.
The pandemic took its toll on youth who endured online classes and had to miss out on social and extracurricular activities.
Students who were previously receiving A’s were dropping to D’s while distance learning, which “became a blow to their sense of self, and the process of losing faith in their abilities,” Wittenberg said.
Heather Long of Maui Youth and Family Services, who’s also a counselor for Baldwin High School and other kids in the Wailuku area and Hawaiian Homes communities, noticed a decline in some of her clients’ mental well-being.
“Kids complained that they hated virtual learning and they wanted to go back to school,” Long said last month. “Some of my clients gained a lot of weight because of sitting and being online for over six hours a day.”
Long has been reaching out to Baldwin students and homeless teens in Wailuku during the last 15 months, providing in-person support services or telehealth counseling sessions to 14- to 18- year-olds as well as clients who graduated in 2020.
“I felt kids felt disconnected from their community of support,” she said.
Long anticipates that the community will see lingering impacts on youth.
“I think when teens start back to in-person learning they will have to get up every day and wear clothes other than their pajamas,” she said. “Teens will have to get back into a schedule that they have not had for the last 16 months.”
According to Barry Taghavi, a Maui Counseling Group psychiatrist, these age groups are more “emotionally susceptible to the effects of limited social interactions.”
While many are welcoming a return to the classroom or workplace, the return may cause some level of discomfort as well, which can prolong any mental illness or substance use disorders.
Despite the increase in social interactions, the adjustment back to work or school can sometimes lower moods due to the “stress of uncertainty and having to make new decisions that they are no longer used to or haven’t had to make before,” Wittenberg said.
There were also many families that had to balance multiple responsibilities throughout the pandemic, like returning to work or trying to find a job, finding child care, raising young children while navigating virtual learning, maintaining relationships and so on. That balancing act may still exist or worsen once regular schedules resume.
“Some high-functioning folks that have embraced reentering the workforce or more social interactions have become overstimulated by changing things too quickly,” Wittenberg said. “Sometimes they are experiencing anxiety in public situations and feeling very awkward and not sure how to proceed in certain instances.”
Psychiatrists and therapists have also noticed a divide in the community opinions about COVID-19, which may cause fear and suspicion.
“People sometimes do not know how to approach each other after the pandemic,” Wittenberg said. “Some people were never concerned about it and some people were highly attuned to it. Some students were told to stay away from others and this message is antithetical from seeking out others for help, which was before the pandemic.”
The pandemic also worsened some problems that existed long before, such as substance abuse or addiction. Adults dealing with addiction often feel that they will be stigmatized for seeking treatment or that they can “handle it on their own,” said Jud Cunningham, chief executive officer of Maui Behavioral Health Resources.
“The prevailing and scientifically supported theory is that addiction is, for many people, a chronic, relapse-prone disease,” Cunningham said. “There is no shame in seeking professional help to seek or sustain recovery from addiction. It is said that addiction is ‘a pandemic within the pandemic,’ that resorting to substance abuse is a maladaptive means of coping with the negative effects of the COVID pandemic.”
Cunningham said that it’s quite likely that once the pandemic subsides, there will be an “even greater need” for substance abuse and mental health treatment.
“For those needing treatment and for those in recovery, stay connected to social networks, support groups and friends who foster healthy alternatives to coping with stress,” he added. “Seeking professional counseling/intervention is a strength, not a weakness.”
Connecting with others, getting outdoors, staying active, setting small goals, limiting screen time and eating nutritious meals are just some of the ways to boost mood and overall well-being.
“Remember that many of us are anxious and sometimes awkward in new social situations, and unpacking some of these feelings with each other, and what purpose they serve, is a great way to get started to handling the new normal,” Wittenberg said.
While youth and keiki need peers for developmental needs, those who are feeling anxious about being in crowds again should take things slow as life returns to the new normal.
“Try to take a deep breath in new social situations, perhaps ask open-ended questions, and listen,” Wittenberg said. “It is also OK if you are not ready to hang out — do not try to take on too much all at once. People have only a certain amount of social energy, and try to be aware of it so you do not cause yourself to burn out and become sick.”
Long suggested that parents assist their teens and keiki with getting back into a familiar routine. Families could also get kids involved with activities that they enjoyed before the pandemic and “expose them to new healthy activities.”
“I think we will see an increase in anxiety because of the demands of going to in-person school. Kids have formed some bad habits and that will take some time to change,” she said. “I also think kids are really going to need safe adults in their life so they can again feel connected to their community.”
Educators may have a challenging time during the 2021-22 school year, but if “we practice true aloha and malama our keiki, we will see healing in our schools,” she said.
Therapists emphasized the importance of reaching out to family and friends for support, doing more wellness check-ins and searching for resources available across Maui County for individuals struggling with mental health and/or substance use.
“We need to do more to educate the public that isolation is unhealthy, and that being outdoors at the parks and beaches are greatly beneficial for both physical and mental health,” Wittenberg said.
Many people found a silver lining during the pandemic — the opportunity to reevaluate their life’s purpose and to place more emphasis on family, friends, hobbies and health.
“There were also some families that were so busy before the pandemic that they realized that they do not spend enough quality time with each other and would not have done that if the pandemic did not occur,” Wittenberg said. “The pandemic has added a healthy perspective to what really matters in life.”

FROM YESTERDAYʻS FREE HAWAI`I TV - "TO REBUILD THE ECONOMY, FOCUS ON A HAWAI`I-GROWN INFRASTRUCTURE"
Tumblr media
Honolulu Civil Beat - April 26, 2020 - By Koohan Paik-Mander
The Hawaii House of Representatives Select Committee on COVID-19 Economic and Financial Preparedness has announced that it has been holding briefings with business, government, nonprofit, and labor leaders for several weeks to plan for a post-coronavirus economy in Hawaii.
Then, on April 8, Gov. David Ige introduced Resolution No. 54, which establishes the related Hawaii Economic and Community Recovery task force.
House Speaker Scott Saiki offered his full-throated support -
This pandemic has reaffirmed what we have known for awhile — that our economy must be diversified and cannot be over-reliant on one or two major industries. This task force must help modernize our economy. The future of our families and state relies upon a sound and resilient economy.
We, the undersigned (see below), are concerned that there are no farmers, or groups that represent Native Hawaiians and everyday working people on the task force that will determine our collective economic future.
It is critical to examine what Saiki means when he talks about a “sound and resilient economy” for Hawaii. We cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that unemployment claims nationally have ballooned to 26 million as of April 23 and are still growing.
Wildcat strikes are flaring up across the U.S., and businesses are folding by the thousands. And the cascading effect is just beginning.
The world as we have always known it, is unraveling. We are heading toward no less than a second Great Depression, with no way of knowing how to predict what a post-pandemic world would even look like.
However, we know one thing for certain: that Hawaii’s first priority is to get to feeding itself, as quickly as possible. Right now, Hawaii imports 90% of its food, which is growing scanter by the week as supply chains fizzle out, under the pressure of a pandemic-crippled global economy.
Change Must Be Strategic
We also know that it is very much in the realm of possibility that we may be slammed by another freak event just as unforeseen as COVID-19. It may be a climate event. It may be a political event. It may be another pandemic, or perhaps a series of pandemics, as has been predicted.
Given the reality that it is unlikely that we can ever go back to “normal,” it is of utmost urgency that the first step in rebuilding a post-pandemic economy is to focus entirely on building a Hawaii-grown infrastructure focused on feeding Hawaii. That would ensure that, regardless of what disaster comes our way, at least we will have laid the groundwork for maximum resiliency, to avoid widespread starvation in Hawaii.
Such a food-security infrastructure would include massive education funding, capital improvement projects, and support for all aspects of regenerative farming, which if done correctly, diverts waste from the landfills and produces healthy soil that captures carbon from the atmosphere. It would also mean a living wage for all, and would help to strengthen the economic vitality and resiliency of rural communities.
Token actions will not suffice. Change must be strategic, systemic and wide-sweeping, and on an order of magnitude equal to the Great Mahele. We must mobilize immediately to create jobs and policy that will serve our people now, as well as over the next seven generations.
The Green New Deal, with agriculture as Hawaii’s “jewel in the crown,” is the best approach to creating a thriving food-secure economy. It would support a livable planet by creating an inclusive, decentralized, equitable economy that considers environment, labor, education, disability rights, women’s rights, veterans’ rights, and others.
No one should be compelled to work at a job that harms either their health, the health of their family, or the health of the planet. Such an economy would embrace the wisdom of native peoples, and their rights, as clearly set forth in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.
These multiple facets are often viewed as “pesky obstacles” from a corporate, profit-margin perspective, but that short-sighted paradigm has proven to be severely flawed. Now, we must think holistically and include the diverse needs of Hawaii’s own local communities first, rather than profits. This, by its very definition, is the fabric of resiliency.
Now is the time to craft an economy that works for everyone. Hawaii is already home to thousands of farmers; we must support them, instead of providing sweetheart deals to out-of-state corporations.
Our own farmers know, better than anyone, what they need to do to grow healthy local food. Yet farmers’ voices are rarely at the table in the halls of power. You will find many of those voices signed below.
Hawaii Can Feed Itself
Further, we must support an education infrastructure that supports young people to prosper by studying regenerative agriculture, such as offering tuition-plus-stipend for agriculture students. Hawaii can feed itself, if we want to do so.
Simply put, COVID-19 and other potential pandemics are sending us into uncharted waters. If we care about Hawaii’s future for all her people, we must build an infrastructure of regenerative agriculture right now that provides a livable wage to island families.
This would be the required foundation for a modernized economy. This would be how to truly support local farmers and all the associated peripheral businesses – suppliers, value-added cottage industry products, cafes, restaurants, etc.
Last year, members of the caucuses for the environment, labor and education of the Democratic Party of Hawaii came together to form the Green New Deal working group. We drafted 27 bills distributed among eight sectors. In addition to agriculture, sectors included ecosystem restoration, education, energy, waste management, health and human services, housing, and transportation.
Each Green New Deal bill was prefaced with the following preamble (adjusted to include “pandemic” as one of the climate-induced global crises):
The Legislature finds that the human-induced global climate crisis requires thoughtful but bold response on many fronts to make Hawaii communities resilient to the impacts of pandemics, storms, floods, fire, and sea-level rise that threaten the very survivability of these fragile islands.
Lest Hawaii lose its leadership position in meeting the future, and in the arenas of labor, justice and equity, the Legislature embraces Aloha Aina to decarbonize Hawaii’s systems of food, energy, and transportation, and to sequester carbon through systems of agriculture, waste management and ecosystem restoration.
The good jobs created thereby also expand access to health, housing and education, ensuring justice and equity for Hawaii’s citizens. The following measure represents a forward step in mitigating and adapting Hawaii to inevitable change.
We, the undersigned, request that Resolution 54’s economic task force make the Green New Deal central to its strategic plan. When You Wish Upon a Star
Oh, look, I’m back with a Stanfou story titled after Disney lyrics.  I sense a theme.  @thestanfoubrew and I were talking about these cuties taking a trip to Disney World, and I couldn’t refuse such a wholesome prompt.  Although the funniest part of this story was admittedly her idea.
Takes place in my Barney verse, because it’s been on my mind 24/7 lately.  Barney is 13, and Michelle is 4.  All fluff, all the time.  It’s over 2900 words, so be prepared.
Lefou clutched Michelle’s hand tightly in his own as they walked through the gate.  In an instant, his senses were assaulted by the sounds of children laughing and screaming, the stickiness of the still, humid air, and the smell of freshly baked pretzels and churros.  They had arrived.
“Disneeeey World!”  Michelle sang as they pulled off to the side while Stanley unfolded a map of the park.
“Alright, what are we in the mood for?”  Stanley asked, once he’d familiarized himself with the layout.
“Put that thing away,”  Lefou snorted, as he lifted Michelle onto his shoulders, walking farther into the park.  The front entrance was flooded with people, and he knew that his daughter might wander off if something exciting caught her attention, “we won’t need it,”
“You say that every time we go somewhere,”  Stanley said, neatly folding the map and stashing it in his back pocket, “and yet we always get lost,”
“Getting lost is part of the adventure, dear,”  Lefou announced, with perhaps a little too much grandiosity.
“Plus, we’re in a theme park,”  Barney added, brushing his hair out of his eyes.  He desperately needed a haircut.  “Not the middle of nowhere.  In a storm.  Without phone service.”
“Exactly,” Lefou said.  He knew that Barney wanted to go on the bigger rides, Michelle wanted to see anything and everything The Little Mermaid, Stanley wanted to spend the day comparing and contrasting the snacks, and Lefou, himself wanted to just enjoy the day with his family... and meet Mickey Mouse.  He was determined to take a picture with Mickey Mouse.
“Well, while you three figure out your haphazard itinerary, I’m going to take an, er,”  Stanley eyed the restroom, before he caught sight of a little boy sporting a Lightning McQueen backpack, “pit stop,”
It was only mid-morning and Lefou was already exhausted.  They had waited in lines to ride three rides, waited in lines to meet Goofy, only to have Michelle burst into tears before Lefou could snap the picture, and waited in lines to -
“Eat this,”  Stanley pushed a handful of popcorn in Lefou’s direction, “you need nourishment, you’re getting grumpy,”
“That’s just staying true to the theme,”  Lefou said, but threw a few pieces in his mouth, “Grumpy is a dwarf, after all,”
“Look, Papa!”  Michelle suddenly squealed, “it’s the carpet!  From Aladdin!”
Lefou looked up to where she was pointing.  He saw people riding a simple attraction, floating in the air on “magic carpets”.  It wasn’t exactly a thrill ride, but as she had said, it was Aladdin... and Lefou did love Aladdin.
“Aw, c’mon,”  Barney groaned, as Lefou pushed him toward the line, “that’s a lame one, and we already went on Dumbo,”
“But it’s Aladdin, Barney,”  Lefou said, batting his eyelashes at the teenager. Barney was a sweet kid, really, and he had been helpful enough keeping Michelle within eyesight, and even sacrificed his spot in line when Michelle so urgently needed to use the bathroom, but Lefou never could waste an opportunity to embarrass his son in public, “do it for me. Your aging papa, he doesn’t have... many... years... left,” Lefou leaned his weight on Barney’s shoulder, throwing his voice into a raspier tone to emulate an elderly man.
“Papa!” Barney rolled his eyes, his cheeks slightly pink, as a few people turned their heads at Lefou’s dramatics.
“If you go on this, I’ll take you on Haunted Mansion again,”  Lefou said, straightening himself.  “You don’t even have to ride with your sister,”
Barney perked up at that – until Stanley threw his arm around his shoulder.
“That’s right,”  Stanley said, with a smirk, “you can go with your old dad this time,”
Barney crossed his arms in a huff, but Lefou could see the corners of his mouth quirk upwards.
“You’ve gotta friend in me,”  Michelle sang from her perch on Stanley’s shoulders as they waited for Toy Story Midway Mania, “you’ve gotta friend in me!”
The wait was the longest line Lefou had ever bothered to stand in, but after a game of I-Spy, a hearty serving of cotton candy, and Michelle’s thirty two choruses of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” they had nearly reached the entrance.  It was the perfect attraction for their family, Lefou had to admit, despite the line.  Michelle loved Toy Story, and Barney spent many an afternoon holed up in his room playing video games as the room got dark around him.
He seated himself next to Barney on the ride, who was bragging under his breath about besting everyone else.  Lefou suspected he had been spending a little too much time with Uncle Gaston the past few weeks.
“Be nice,”  Lefou reminded him, with a chuckle, sliding the glasses needed for the ride over his nose, “she’s only four,”
“Oh, I’ll be nice to Michelle,” Barney assured, as the car began to move, “it’s Dad that really has to watch out,”
Lefou laughed again, as they began to spin through the track.  Going to the shooting range with Gaston numerous times over the years had taught Lefou decent aim, but he couldn’t say his virtual skills were quite as good.  He could tell he was missing the targets by a long shot. He watched as Barney’s score racked higher and higher, and couldn’t help but smile at his son’s youthful laugh as he hit a particularly difficult target.  It reminded him of when Barney was younger, and the smile was ever present on his face.
Lefou returned his attention to his own score when he realized how horribly he was losing, shooting the last few targets to the best of his ability.  He was slightly dizzy as they walked off of the ride, squinting in the sunlight, as Stanley and Michelle followed close behind.
“How’d you do, Michelle?”  Lefou asked, peering over Stanley’s shoulder as he studied the map for the fifth time that day.  He didn’t pay close attention to Michelle’s answer, muttering something under his breath, as he pointed to a spot on the map, when he heard Barney yelp.
“What!?”
“What what?”  Stanley closed the map, frowning at the kids.  Barney was staring, arms crossed at his sister, who had her hands on her hips. “What happened?”
“She... can you believe it?”  Barney threw his hands in his air, turning around in an almost comical fashion.  Lefou supposed his knack for melodrama was more taught, rather than inherited.
“Believe what?”  Stanley furrowed his brow, and Lefou mirrored the expression.  The kids were yammering on excitedly two minutes ago, and now they were arguing?  How long was he looking at that map...?
“Believe that... that she...”  Barney huffed loudly, “she beat me!”
The confusion and concern left Stanley’s eyes and were replaced by a cheerful glimmer.  “Did she now?”
“I did!”  Michelle began to jump up and down on the pavement, waving her little arms around.  “I’mma natural, Daddy!”
“A natural pain in the -”
“Bartholomew,” Lefou cut him off before he could continue the crude sentence.
“It’s not fair,”  Barney huffed, as Stanley led them along the road.
“It’s just a game, sweetie,”  Stanley said, patting the boy on his shoulder, as Barney winced at the pet name.
“Just a game I should have won,”
“Barney, if you don’t stop -”  Lefou began, before -
“IT’S ARIEL, PAPA!  DADDY, LOOK, IT’S PRINCESS ARIEL!”
Lefou saw Ariel, waving at them as Michelle danced in excitement (...was that excitement?  when had they last taken a pit stop?), waving her little arms in return.
“Can we go say hi, Papa?”  Michelle was nearly incoherent, her emotions getting the best of her, as she saw her favorite movie character smiling brightly at her.
“Of course, sweetheart, just one min-”  before Lefou could finish his sentence, Michelle was bolting across the road, collapsing into Ariel’s arms as she hugged her idol.
“It’s so nice to see you, Princess!”  Ariel said, cheerily, “how are you doing today?”
“I’m great!”  Michelle said, and Lefou couldn’t help but take a few too many pictures of them just talking.  He would apologize to his Instagram followers later, it was too cute to miss.  “You’re my favorite princess!”
“Really, now?”  Ariel held the girl at arms’ length, looking at her face. “Because I think you’re my favorite princess,”
Michelle giggled, “I’m not a princess,”
“Is that so?”  Ariel asked, putting on a mock serious expression, “because I heard from my friend, Moana that if you wear a dress and have an animal sidekick, that makes you a princess,”
“Maui said that, actually,”  Barney muttered under his breath.
“You know Moana?”  Michelle gasped.
“Of course I do!”  Ariel laughed, “so, tell me.  Do you wear dresses?”
Michelle inspected her own outfit.  A red dress with white spots that always made Lefou think of Minnie Mouse, appropriate for their trip.  “I’m wearing a dress right now!”
“And do you have an animal sidekick?”
“I have a cat!  And a dog!”  Michelle said.
“And she has you, Barney,”  Stanley said, nudging his shoulder, trying to break his son’s bad mood.
“Dad,”
“Barney,”
“I guess that settles it, then,”  Ariel said, with a tone of finality. “you must be a princess.  I trust you’ll take on your responsibility, and do good for your kingdom,”
Michelle nodded, seriously.
“Alright, then,”  Ariel said, flashing a smile at the rest of the family, “would you like a picture?  Do you have one of those... oh, what do they call them... shell phones?”
Michelle giggled, “it’s a cell phone, silly,”
“Oh, of course,”  Ariel said, pulling Michelle to her side, posing as Lefou held up the phone, “silly me.  Growing up under the sea means I still have a lot to learn, I suppose.  Good thing I have you to help me!”
“Okay, Michelle, say cheese!”
It had taken another half hour, and a promise of ice cream, but Barney’s mood had finally improved, and he was back to smiling for the pictures, and laughing on the rides, and even gave Michelle a piggyback ride when she asked.
It was late afternoon, and they had hit almost all of the attractions they had aimed for, and were filling in the gaps before the fireworks. They had met Ariel and Tiana, Lefou had impressed Donald Duck with his impression (Stanley holding Michelle at a safe distance), and even Barney got a little excited to meet The Mad Hatter when they greeted Alice.  They rode the roller coasters and Haunted Mansion for Barney and Stanley, the smaller rides for Michelle (and Lefou, if he was being honest), and tried so many snacks – per Stanley’s request – that Lefou was sure he wouldn’t be able to eat greasy or sugary foods for a month, and had a hankering for a vegetable of any kind.
All in all, it had been a good day, and it wasn’t even over yet.  The sun was beginning to set, and the crowds were beginning to clear out. Michelle was getting a little whiny, and Barney was yawning impressively, but Lefou was determined to watch the fireworks show.  It wasn’t a successful Disney trip without it.
They were wandering around the gift shops as they waited.  Michelle found an entire display dedicated to The Little Mermaid, and couldn’t decide what her favorite souvenir was.  Barney was rooting through the racks of shirts, he appeared to be drawn to the ones honoring the villains.
“Hey, Papa?”  He called across the store, holding up a shirt, that displayed a few of his favorites, Jafar, Scar, Maleficent... “you’re the Disney expert, who’s the one in the middle?  In the red shirt?”
Lefou scratched the back of his head, confused.  It was true, he was a bit of a Disney expert, he thought he had seen almost all of the movies, but he couldn’t seem to place this one.  It was a man; tall, dark hair, a red coat, a cleft chin... but he couldn’t for the life of him place who it might be.
“I... I honestly have no idea,”  Lefou shrugged, his pride slightly bruised.
“Uncle Gaston!”  Michelle said.
“Excuse me?”  Lefou raised an eyebrow.  That man on the shirt didn’t look anything like his friend.
“We should buy this for Uncle Gaston,”  Michelle held up a stuffed animal.
“... Bambi?”  Lefou couldn’t remember a time when Gaston would have had ever shown an interest in a movie about baby animals.
“It’s not just Bambi,”  Michelle said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world, “it’s a deer!  Like Uncle Gaston has on his wall!”
Stanley let out a hoot of laughter, “for that reason alone, we’re buying this for him,” he took the toy from Michelle’s hand, peering at the price tag, “... and then we don’t have to buy him a birthday or Christmas present for two years,”
Lefou laughed, as he glanced at a clock on the wall (why did the clock have a face?  Were the hands supposed to be a mustache?), and noticed it was getting late.  “Have you guys found anything you like?  We should be going, we want to get a good spot for the fireworks,”
“I want this!”  Michelle decided, pulling a (rather large) Flounder plush from one of the shelves.
Lefou nodded, turning his head to Barney, “and you?”
Barney shrugged, examining the shirt one more time, “even though I have no idea who this guy is, I think I like this one.  It has Captain Hook on it,”
“How about you, Babe?”  Lefou asked, throwing a smile to Stanley, “do you need a little trinket to remember the day by?”
“I think the five thousand pictures you took should be enough,” Stanley teased, but he was looking longingly at a display of mugs.
“Buy the mug,”  Lefou encouraged, “actually, buy two.  I want a Mickey one,”
The family of four weaved their way through the crowd as they hunted for the perfect spot to watch the fireworks.  Stanley was carrying Michelle so she wouldn’t get lost in the large groups of people, and even Barney was holding onto the back of Lefou’s shirt “just in case”.
“This’ll do,”  Stanley decided, slowing to a stop.
“Speak for yourself,”  Lefou muttered, as he wedged himself uncomfortably between his husband and a woman he didn’t know.
“Well, maybe if you didn’t take ten minutes choosing between a mug with Mickey Mouse, or a different mug with Mickey Mouse, we could have found a better spot,”
Lefou scowled, but didn’t have much time to pout, as the music began to play, signaling the beginning of the show.  His discomfort was instantly forgotten as his eyes were drawn to the castle, now lit up with lights and his ears filled with familiar melodies.  He’d always loved watching fireworks, and there was no better display – in his opinion, anyway – than the ones at Disney World.  He couldn’t tear his eyes away from the show, as he hummed along to the songs from his favorite movies.  Classics like Aladdin, and The Jungle Book, and the more modern ones that Michelle loved to watch, like Moana, and Frozen.  He had always had a certain fondness for Olaf, after all.
Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Michelle rest her head on Stanley’s shoulder, obviously exhausted from the busy day.  Barney rested his arm around Lefou’s shoulder, he was almost his height, already.
The fireworks were so beautiful, Lefou felt a lump form in the back of his throat.  They watched the show until the music swelled to a roar, the fireworks shot out at an alarming rate and then – silence. Only for a moment... and then applause.  Lefou swallowed the lump in his throat, wiped a stray tear away, and clapped along.  He heard Stanley let out a loud whoop.
The crowd began to slowly disperse, and Lefou saw, despite the noise, Michelle had fallen asleep against Stanley’s shoulder.  Barney let out a long yawn, as they followed the flow of people making their way to the parking lot.
“I’d say that was a successful day,”  Lefou announced, as they seated themselves in the car (after spending twenty minutes trying to locate it).
“No kidding,”  Stanley chuckled, as he started the car, looking into the backseat from the rear-view mirror.  Michelle was slumped over in her car seat, fast asleep, and Barney was slouched in the seat next to her, the hood of his sweatshirt pulled over his eyes, almost asleep himself, “they’ll sleep well tonight,”
Lefou let out a yawn of his own, and nodded, “so will I,”
Stanley turned the radio on low volume as they slowly made their way out of the parking lot to head back to the hotel, “that was some fireworks show, hmm?”
“I’ll say,”  Lefou agreed,  “I cried,”
“I thought you might,”  Stanley glanced over, with a wink, “there was one thing I didn’t know, though,”
“What was that?”
“When they had the part with all the princesses,”  Stanley said, flicking the turn signal, “I recognized Ariel, of course, Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora...”
“But...?”
“But who on earth was the one in the yellow dress?”

I will go and do part 1—>
Earlier this year I was tasked with coming up with a concept for the 2020 Mutual Music Video for the church. The process was a ton of work but was a huge blessing and the work is almost done. Initially I came up with an idea to create 4 doors in four scenes around the world that would show 4 youth doing some sort of service coming to a door contemplating whether or not to go in and then marking the choice to go in and serve etc. I know, very cliche and very typical. But the concept worked...well sort of... worked enough to continue working on the project! The next few months would prove to be both intense and wonderful but overall an amazing experience. The product manager for the project actually had tasked this to the pacific area the year previous and was kinda freaking out cause he had recieved no reply about whether the area was going to fulfill it or not. I hadn’t arrived to NZ yet and I think my boss was crazy busy and didn’t have enough resources or time to take it on, so when I arrived it was my first assignment. At first I wasn’t sure what to do but decided to go ahaead and create previously said concept. Since the product manager hadnt heard from us he hired another director to begin concepting as well: so with the initial collaboration my original idea morphed into something completely different...a beautiful story about a journey...just not anything like the story I was thinking about telling. None the less I thought it would be a cool story to tell. During this initial phase I also called an old buddy of mine Taylor Steele an amazing cinematographer who had taken over my previous position at BYUH to come on as a director/cinematographer. I asked him if he would be willing to shoot and he accepted, I was stoked. Meanwhile the other director and I continued to work on our journey idea, when suddenly said director got sick and the journey concept started to suffer. The logistics started to feel like they were spiraling out of budget range yet we were to present our concept on the next day. That night I said a prayer and decided to rework the original idea with some tweaks, consulting, ideation and encouragement from Tay. I kept hearing something in my mind say keep it simple. so that’s what I did. In the morning after our initial pitch, I could tell the product manager was freaking out a little bit so I told him I had a second idea and asked him if I could pitch it to him as well. He gave me a green light and I was off in explanation. Long story short the idea was accepted, and we were green lit to expand on that concept. For the next three weeks Tay and had many long long working nights, we prayed, edited the concept, talked about it, hashed out our ideas and in the end Taylor created an awesome treatment. The door idea was approved by the quorum of the Twelve and we were off and running. Tay and I worked hard over the next few weeks via web chats and etc and the other director was so gracious and decided to move on to another project. We worked on costs, budget, locations, ideas, storyboards, cast, and more tweaks. I traveled with a conworker to queenstown to meet up with Doc to obtain permits and make sure we could shoot in the locations we wanted to. We created a casting call and after a month of vetting we cast 4 youth to play the main characters and travel with us and be the focal points of the video. Huia Moana Shortland, from Whanagarei, Melissa Rachel Main from Papakura, Theo Magalogo from Hendersen, and Zyon Lavakula from Papatoe. These kids were amazing. We also hired Julia Wihongi to do hair and make up, Thomas did food and locations, Tay hired Josh Christiansen and Jordan Tane Williams. We also hired James Ratana to do behind the scenes, and Japeth Tiakia as a PA. We held a production meeting that was awesome, we met each other, had some Kai, and did some fittings. Then continued the preproduction process for 3more weeks. At this point Fernando Camillo, The product manager, was excited too. He also told us he would be bringing his wife along so we made sure to plan for that.
Production lasted 10 days. In that 10 days we shot in 10 different locations in the North island and the South Island. Let me break it down.
We started in Takapuna where everyone would meet and prepare to leave for our first location. After introducing everyone to families having some pizza and saying a prayer we packed into a van with a furniture trailer from hire pool and a 6 berth Maui camper van and began our caravan off to location 1. Whatipu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whatipu was amazing. It was raining when we arrived and it was chilly as well but everyone was in such good spirits that it didn’t take long to get into the swing of things. We rented out the whole lodge so the first night we settled into our rooms, took in the scenery scouted the area and then came back for dinner.

Gerber – who has been a muse for Jimmy Choo for the past three years – designed a lace-up combat boot, a western boot, snakeskin sling-back kitten heel and a black mule. “I jumped at the chance to work with Sandra [Choi, Jimmy Choo’s creative director] on my dream capsule of shoe and boot styles, it was such an honour to be able to brainstorm creatively and I am so thrilled with the result,” Kaia said in a press release. “I wanted an effortless on/off duty wardrobe that could work with any look in a colour palette that talked to my Cali roots while adapting to any city, at any time, anywhere.” In addition to stunning shoes, the collection has a philanthropic edge, with fifteen per cent of the collection’s sales being donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

For the NBA, victory now travels in Vuitton. Luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton has hand-crafted a travel trunk for the Larry O’Brien Trophy, the exact hardware that gets awarded to the NBA championship team each year. The iconic LV monogram print covers the case, and a white “V,” for victory, sits on the front. The NBA logo on the blue interior is a personal nod to the league. This new treasure was revealed this week in a way that combined both the league’s and the fashion brand’s natural habitats: at an NBA game, in Paris. Though the French label has designed cases for other prestigious trophies in their ongoing series “Victory Travels in Louis Vuitton,” this is the first North American league to clinch such a trunk. “Louis Vuitton has long been associated with the world’s most coveted trophies, and with this iconic partnership the legacy continues–victory does indeed travel in Louis Vuitton,” says Louis Vuitton Chairman and CEO Michael Burke. The NBA and LV also revealed a multi-year partnership agreement, which will see Virgil Abloh, Louis Vuitton’s creative director of menswear, design co-branded ready-to-wear- and accessory-filled collections. And now, as a first-time venture, she will team up with H&M for a mini capsule collection. The collection features a series of flowers that she photographed, printed on loose, curved-hem T-shirts, cropped sweatshirts and oversized hoodies. But it doesn’t end with the wares. Hello everyone! I am so happy to share all about my travels and experiences as an American living in a developing country. My name is Emily Mick and I am a special education teacher living and working in the Dominican Republic! I moved here about 8 months ago to pursue my never-ending lust for adventure.
Growing up, my parents made it a point to take family vacations once a year. We went everywhere from the Black Hills of South Dakota to the beautiful beaches of Maui and San Juan, Puerto Rico. I remember looking forward to our family adventures and always anxiously awaiting the next one.
I went to college at Iowa State University to become a special education teacher. During the summers, I was fortunate enough to work for Camp Adventure Youth Services. Camp Adventure is a program that trains summer camp counselors and places them at military bases all around the world to provide programming for the children living on base. I worked in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Ansbach, Germany, and Vicenza, Italy. After those experiences, I just knew I would never stop wandering.
I really appreciate that you wanted to tell us a little about the Dominican Republic, a place I have never been to and which I am eager to learn more about. How did you decide on this location?
Once I decided on moving to another country, my final decision came down to my craving for something new. I had never been to a developing country before and I had just barely dipped my toes in the Caribbean. The idea of living on a tropical island, where I could experience warm weather, a new culture, new foods, and a somewhat new language sounded amazing. And the fact that I was able to continue working as a special education teacher was simply too good to be true!
How did you get there?  Where did you stay? How is the transportation there? Did you use any agency, activity package, a guide or you did it all yourself?
My family lives in Chicago so I flew into Santo Domingo from the O’hare airport. When flying here, you will almost always have a layover in Miami. The trip was only around 5 hours total. Not bad for an international flight! Because I actually work here, I live in an apartment in the city. However, when I travel around the island I always rent an Airbnb. There are so many options and you can save so much money!
One thing I am extremely thankful for is Uber. I use Uber all the time in the city! There is also a subway that runs a route up and down the main interstate in the city as well as buses, public cars, and motoconchos which are public motorcycle taxis. If you need to get somewhere, there are many options for transportation. When we are traveling longer distances, we always rent a car.
In terms of activities and tour guides, I have booked travel excursions through various online companies for things like snorkeling and waterfall hikes. However, when I first arrived, I did everything on my own. I used my coworkers at school as tour guides and just learned how to manage from there.
Could you explore on your own? Was there a language barrier?
It is definitely possible to explore the country on your own. At first, I was a little nervous walking around by myself. I have never felt unsafe but I get lost so easily and my Spanish was pretty rocky. I quickly learned that the people are super friendly and do a great job attempting to speak Spanglish with me.
Coming here, I was way more confident in my Spanish skills that I should have been. Dominican Spanish is very different than the Spanish you will hear in Mexico or Spain. They speak quickly and tend to drop the endings of words. I have gotten used to the Spanish but there was most definitely a language barrier when I first arrived. But like I said, lots of people are happy to help and very willing to take time and try to understand you. So don’t be afraid to sound silly! You would be surprised how many people want to try and learn English here.
If you visit the North side of the island (my favorite!) you will meet many Europeans who have moved here to live a more peaceful and relaxed way of life. They love showing us around and introducing us to the best local cafes. Hostels and share houses are a great way to travel alone because they are really cheap and often have other young travellers who are looking to experience the same adventures as you!
I have made some close friends over the last 8 months so I typically travel with 3 to 5 other people. Again, I am a teacher and do not make very much money so I like to cut costs in every way possible.
What are some of the best spots to visit in the Dominican Republic?
My favorite spot for a relaxing getaway is Las Terrenas. It is an adorable little beach town up North, right along the coast. It has great cafes for breakfast and lunch as well as really good seafood restaurants for dinner. There are some fun beach-side bars that play music and have good happy hour deals. This is where many Europeans live. I like it because you get a good taste of the Dominican culture through food and music but then you also get great Italian influence. Plus many of the Europeans have Airbnbs for low prices. I highly recommend Las Terrenas!
Also on the North side of the island is Cabarete and Puerto Plata. They are not far from each other but both offer great beach views and fun activities as well!
Another one of my favorite places is Jarabacoa. This is a town about an hour and a half north of the city in the mountains. I was actually surprised to learn that there were mountain ranges on the island. I had no idea! This is not your typical idea of a tropical vacation. But it is definitely worth visiting! The drive alone is absolutely beautiful. Once you arrive to the town, you will find authentic Dominican colmados and comedors. These are road-side restaurants that serve local cuisine. They are all over the city as well. Colmados are the perfect place to sit back, relax, and enjoy an ice cold Presidente beer after hiking in the mountains. But my favorite thing about Jarabacoa are the amazing sunsets. There is really nothing better than watching the sunset over the mountains.
You mentioned Snorkelling and waterfall chasing before. What are some of the activities you enjoyed there?
Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is the beach. Spending the weekends relaxing on the beach is a perfect way to wind down after a long work week. But I have also loved snorkeling, boating, and kitesurfing. I took a kitesurfing course in Cabarete. It was so much fun to learn about a sport that I had never experienced before. I can’t say I was very good at it but I am looking forward to continuing to learn!
If you are spending time in Santo Domingo, you have to visit Los Tres Ojos! It is a protected area of caves and natural pools that are located underneath the city. This is probably the most unique park I have ever been to!
If you come in the winter, you might have the opportunity to experience Carnaval. This is a Dominican festival outside the city where you can find the streets lined with food and drink vendors, music, and dancing. There is a huge parade with insanely colorful and elaborate costumes. This was one of my favorite true Dominican experiences so far.
With all of those activities being amazing adventures, my favorite so far has been chasing waterfalls. There are many waterfalls on the island, even the tallest waterfall in the Caribbean! The majority of the waterfalls are up north near Cabarete and Puerto Plata. There is even an excursion called “27 Waterfalls” where you can hike to, jump from, and swim under all the waterfalls you can imagine.
What did you learn from the locals, their culture, and lifestyle?
I think the people are the most fascinating part of the country. There is so much poverty yet everyone always seems happy. They are always willing to work together to support friends, family, and even total strangers like me! It is really something to admire.
Dominican culture is very relaxed yet hectic at the same time. I must admit, getting used to “island time” was a little difficult at first. Because of the fact that this is a developing country, some restaurants and stores lack online information. It has been a challenge getting used to the strange hours and siestas that many restaurants take. I am very thankful that the people are so friendly because I often find myself asking questions about when and where to eat. You just have to accept the fact that if you choose to eat out at a restaurant, your food may take longer than in the States because they really like the social aspect of sitting and enjoying time with friends. The food comes second to good conversation.
Everyone really takes their time and fully live up to the slow-paced lifestyle. You will often see people just hanging out on street corners, sipping coffee and chatting with friends. There isn’t much hustle or bustle throughout the work week, except for on the interstate. The roads can get pretty crazy during rush hour due to the high volume of people that live in the city. Outside the city, the roads are just fine.
Did you enjoy the cuisine there? Which were your favorite dishes?
I love Dominican food! It is really simple and not very spicy. Anyone will be able to find something to enjoy here. The absolute best part about living on a tropical island is all the fresh fruit. You can purchase fresh fruit for next to no money on every street corner. My favorite fruit to eat here is chinola. It is passionfruit and they use it in everything from juice to ice cream. Chinola is delicious!
Some of my favorite meals to order at restaurants include chicken and rice or Caribbean fish. Fried chicken is very popular here and Dominicans can make a mean fried chicken. It is seasoned perfectly and flash fried so that the skin is really crispy but the inside is still juicy. It is always served with rice and fried plantains called tostones. Caribbean fish is cooked similarly to the chicken. It is flash fried whole and topped with pickled peppers. It is the best way to eat fish!
Any tips for future visitors?
I would definitely recommend doing some research prior to arriving. Like I said, the internet can be a little tricky to navigate and many small towns can have spotty cell service. Make sure you know where your accommodations are and have a general idea of where you want to go so you don’t let loose. It wouldn’t hurt to learn a little Spanish too.
Along with that, I can’t say enough good things about the Airbnb rentals here. There are so many amazing homes and apartments to stay in that will save you money. The people who own the buildings are always willing to help make your stay as perfect as can be.
Finally, take advantage of the size of the island! If you are here for a week or more, you will have plenty of time to explore more than one town. My favorite places are up North. Spend a few days in each town, then drive an hour or two to the next. You will get the full Dominican experience as well as the opportunity to do more activities.
Was is your next adventure? Anything planned yet?
Living in the Caribbean opens doors to many other islands. Of course, I will continue to explore all corners of the Dominican Republic. But, I am also planning on traveling to Cuba in the near future. I would love to visit Havana and experience the culture and lifestyle there.
How can we see more about you and your trips? what is your website or/and social media?
One of the best decisions I have made since moving here is starting my own blog! You can read all about my adventures as well as some travel tips and tricks at Que lo que. I try to post once or twice a month. I would love to connect with other travel bloggers!
You can also follow me on Instagram at emily__cecilia. I post most of my pictures there!
