Trese: Season 1 (2021)
Plot premise: Set in Manila where the mythical creatures of Philippine folklore live in hiding amongst humans, Alexandra Trese finds herself going head to head with a criminal underworld comprised of malevolent supernatural beings.
Network: Netflix Episodes (and episode length): 6 (25-33 mins) Creator: Budjette Tan, Kajo Baldissimo Cast: (Filipino) Liza Soberano, Apollo Abraham, Eugene Adalia, Christopher Carlo Cling, Simon Dela Cruz, Christian Velarde, Bryan Encarnacion (English) Shay Mitchell, Matt Yang King, Carlos Alazraqui, Griffin Puatu, Manny Jacinto, Darren Criss, Lou Diamond Phillips, Dante Basco, Steve Blum (Japanese) Shiraishi Ryôko, Uo Ken, Saitô Hironori, Sanpei Yuuki, Hosokawa Yoshihisa, Yanai Ken, Tani Atsuki IMDB | RottenTomatoes
± Cast is very long for this entry cause I’m interested in watching all versions. I started with the Filipino audio and as of writing I’m just about to start the English audio. I’ll update later on for additional input on the English and Japanese dubs.
While it has areas to improve upon and i can sit down and nit pick it, it’s pretty good all in all. And considering there hasn’t been much in the way of original Filipino animation, they did pretty well. I’ve not read the source graphic novel but i’ve heard it’s pretty faithful in terms of story and art style. The art style indeed is quite fitting and lovely in its reflection of Manila, in all its beauty and the grittiness. They mythological creatures are both representative of the creepy stories older generations tell to the youth, and fittingly creepy when they need to be. I did enjoy the integration of these old creatures into the modernized Manila. Perhaps a note for improvement could be on the fluidity of animation, particularly of conversation --since they do a lot of it-- where they could’ve filled in the frames for mouth movement a little more than they did. After all, animation can do that where graphic novels do not.... Perhaps a study of how Japanese anime does the same could be beneficial for future episodes.
[I go on quite a bit, and a lot of it is kinda rambling, so i put it under a cut... but also there’s also some SPOILERS under the cut]
The story is quite interesting and while the pace suffers a little in the rush around episodes 1-3 --particularly in 2 as they smash in two cases in the span of 30 minutes-- it’s still pretty gripping and i did enjoy the parts where they alternated present day story with Alexandra Trese’s younger years, letting the mystery unfold simultaneously. I did lament the wrap up during the denouement in episode 6, since 6 episodes doesn’t seem quite long enough to warrant doing as many flashbacks that were in the last 5 1/2 episodes --perhaps scenes we weren’t shown or extensions of scenes we did see would’ve felt a little better to me.
On the internet rant-y issue of voice acting and translation: I watched with the Filipino audio first and i feel like a lot of people are complaining for the sake of complaining. Sure, i have minor issues about it (like word choice of Trese using siyudad (Spanish) instead of lungsod (Tagalog) when she grew up, ostensibly, in Metro Manila; the word choice of hospital (English) instead of ospital which sounds odd when her speech pattern leans more to Tagalog than Taglish), but in the context of mythology in present day, i actually appreciate the use of deeper and less often used straight Tagalog --even though i watched with English subs on lest i miss the meaning as I’m not actually good in Filipino-- for the mythological characters. There was also a consistency that they established for characters’ speech patterns. Trese, Captain Guerrero, and most of the mythical creatures use more consistent straight Filipino/Tagalog, with the humans having a leaning to more conversational Tagalog. Crispin, Basilio, and some of the background characters use Taglish and more colloquial speech patterns. The wind elementals and other side characters use more English and accented conyo speech. And the particular characters speaking in their certain way is consistent and does help establish their personalities aside from what is told about them.
The rant about Liza Soberano’s monotony is over lamented i think. It’s not the beset voice acting, certainly there could have been more expressiveness in her delivery, but it was by no means monotonous and unfeeling. The tone and cadence was fitting for what i learned about Alexandra Trese throughout the episodes. Now, it is true that more could have been done, but that could stem from several different things: (1) Liza’s inexperience with voice acting --where while perhaps there could have been better voice actors out there, if she really wanted to do it then well everyone has to start somewhere and if she sticks with it she may get better; (2) The director could’ve given more input and gotten more takes with different delivery --as they do with voice over work-- meaning what may be lacking was either a directing choice or a failure to communicate; (3) The casting director and producers choices -- while true there’s something to be had about popular celebrities and project funding, i’m sure there could’ve been other ways to go about it, especially since Trese has an existing fanbase already.
As of writing, i haven’t yet watched with the English audio --which i’m excited about because of the casting of, while Hollywood names are still those of Filipino descent. But in terms of script --if it’s the same as the English subs-- i kind of prefer the Filipino script as it’s more down to earth than the English version which is more doom and gloom and “only me” egocentric in how it comes across.
[SPOILERS] If you’ve made it all the way down here, let’s circle back around to story. I do like how they wrote out their storytelling. They established important characters in act 1 and 2, and fleshed them out throughout act 2 and 3. It gave ample time for foreshadowing and for the mystery to unravel with all the players already on the board. Arguably the general only appears in the last episode, but considering what his role is, that does actually make sense. ((I have to pay attention to Maliksi in my 2nd watch through cause rn i feel like the turnaround was surprising.)) The only note i suppose i have is regarding the prophecy: “sixth child of a sixth child.” I think they mention it once in act 2 but there’s otherwise no mention of Alexandra’s siblings that i kind of assumed she was an only child. All that said though --considering it’s currently a short, limited series, and most of the siblings don’t play a significant role-- i can understand why they wouldn’t include the siblings and risk overstuffing the narrative when there’s so little time already.

The King and I - Brazil - 2010 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Tuca Andrada (Rei), Cláudia Netto (Anna Leonowens), Luciana Bueno (Lady Thiang), Bianca Tadini (Tumptim) The King and I - North Shore Music Theatre - September-October, 2011 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Kate Fisher (Anna Leonowens), Lorenzo Lamas (King of Siam), Lisa Yuen (Lady Thiang), Manna Nichols (Tuptim), Joshua Dela Cruz (Lun Tha), Ron Wisniski (Sir Edward Ramsey) NOTES: Proshot. Performed in the round, one camera on a tripod and sound patched in from the soundboard. The King and I - West End Revival - November 29, 2018 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Kelli O’Hara (Anna Leonowens), Ken Watanabe (King of Siam), Ruthie Ann Miles (Lady Thiang), Na-Young Jeon (Tuptim), Dean John-Wilson (Lun Tha), Edward Baker-Duly (Sir Edward Ramsey), Jon Chew (Prince Chulalongkorn), Edward Baker-Duly (Captain Orton), Billy Marlow (Louis Leonowens), Takao Osawa (Kralahome), William Michael Lee (Phra Alack) NOTES: Ruthie uses a walking stick throughout to aid her recovery from a previous car accident and loss of her two children. She gives an amazing performance. King Kong - Broadway - August 10, 2019 FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Christiani Pitts (Ann Darrow), Eric William Morris (Carl Denham), Erik Lochtefeld (Lumpy) NOTES: The full show, recorded from the rear orchestra on a phone. Most of the video is the August 10th recording but occasionally some promotional footage and the February 9th video are edited in to provide other views. The recording starts off with a lot of wandering, shakiness, and washout but gets better somewhat better as it goes on. Still not as good as an actual video filmed with a camera, but it exists. 1920x1080p, 4.29 GB. King Kong - Broadway - October, 2018 (Preview) (House-Cam's master) FORMAT: MP4 (SD) CAST: Christiani Pitts (Ann Darrow), Eric William Morris (Carl Denham), Erik Lochtefeld (Lumpy), Harley Jay (Barman), Rory Donovan (Captain Engelhorn/Chief of Police), Jon Hoche (Voice of Kong) NOTES: Full stage shot with clear audio direct from soundboard. Kinky Boots - Broadway - March 15, 2013 (Preview) (Lanelle's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Stark Sands (Charlie Price), Billy Porter (Lola), Annaleigh Ashford (Lauren), Celina Carvajal (Nicola), Daniel Stewart Sherman (Don), Marcus Neville (George), Jonah Halperin (s/b Young Charlie), Marquise Neal (Young Lola) NOTES: Fun show with a pertinent (but not obtrusive) message, Billy Porter is just amazing. This is somewhat more obstructed than other shows because the person in front was leaning forward and moving a lot, so there's a head in some of the scenes. Some shakiness and wandering in between, particularly at the beginning, but otherwise a good video with nice closeups. Complete show including curtain call. A- Kinky Boots - Broadway - July 17, 2018 (NYCG8R's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: David Cook (Charlie Price), Stephane Duret (s/b Lola), Carrie St Louis (Lauren), Caroline Bowman (Nicola), Daniel Stewart Sherman (Don), Marcus Neville (George), Corey Mach (Harry), Eugene Barry-Hill (Simon Sr.), Stephen Berger (Mr. Price), Adinah Alexander (Milan Stage Manager), Cooper Lantz (Young Charlie), Jesús Del Orden (Young Lola) NOTES: Quite a few latecomers that walk in front but nothing too distracting; otherwise very well filmed HD video with clear picture and sound throughout; great video A Kinky Boots - Broadway - May-August, 2017 FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Brendon Urie (Charlie Price), J Harrison Ghee (Lola), Taylor Louderman (Lauren) NOTES: Starts at Sex is in the Heel Kinky Boots - First National Tour - April 17, 2016 (SJ Bernly's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Adam Kaplan (Charlie Price), J Harrison Ghee (Lola), Tiffany Engen (Lauren), Charissa Hogeland (Nicola), Aaron Walpole (Don), Jim J Bullock (George), Josh Tolle (Harry), Shawna M Hamic (Trish), Horace V Rogers (Simon Sr.), Tom Souhrada (Mr. Price), Zach Adkins (Richard Bailey), Patty Lohr (Pat), Annie Edgerton (Milan Stage Manager), Aidan Passaro (Young Charlie), Jomil Elijah Robinson (Young Lola) Kinky Boots - Netherlands Tour - October 27, 2019 FORMAT: MOV (HD) CAST: Jonathan Demoor (Charlie Price), Naidjim Severina (Lola), Vajèn van den Bosch (Lauren), Linda Verstraten (Nicola), Dennis Willekens (Don), Paul Donkers (George), Jeroen Phaff (Mr. Price) Kinky Boots - Pre-Broadway/Chicago - November 4, 2012 (Closing Night) (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Stark Sands (Charlie Price), Billy Porter (Lola), Annaleigh Ashford (Lauren), Celina Carvajal (Nicola), Daniel Stewart Sherman (Don), Marcus Neville (George), Andy Kelso (Harry), Jennifer Perry (Trish), Tory Ross (Pat) NOTES: Another beautiful HD capture of the last performance in Chicago before Broadway, where it would go on to win the 2013 Tony. 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒋𝒐𝒂𝒏𝒂 ( @ladyjungle ) :
I respect, but I’m different!

Steven Universe Comics: Where do I start???
Have you ever thought about checking out the Steven Universe comics from the beginning and can't figure out where to start . . .
Because there are literally dozens of things labeled "#1"?
In this post I will outline for you what comics exist, which #1 issues belong to what series, and where you should start.
Please see my breakdown of Issue #1 Logic after the jump.
FIRST OF ALL: Steven Universe comics generally don't require that you read them in any specific order. So any #1 that you pick up is actually almost guaranteed to be either a standalone or the beginning of a series that doesn’t depend on earlier series. The practical upshot is that if you're buying a #1, it's fine. Any #1 is a fine place to start reading and it won't ruin any enjoyment for you.
That said?
There IS an order that these things came out, and I can explain it to you. Please scroll down for an exhaustive explanation of what's what--including several individual comic series, the trade paperback collections with rereleased content, the original graphic novels, and the standalone comic issues.
Steven Universe Original Comic Series
8 issues total
Ran from 2014–2015
Generally retailed at $3.99 USD
Completed
These original comics were lovely little one-shots--several stories in each paper issue. Only one story had a “to be continued” and finished in the next issue; they’re almost entirely self-contained. Some are one-page art inserts or two- or four-page shorts, with a main story or two.
The above image depicts the main cover art for #1 by Bridget Underwood. You may find variant covers of this. They contain the SAME CONTENT inside as the above, but have different covers. Other Original #1 covers you may see include art by Andrea Fernandez, Coleman Engle, Matt Cummings, Steven Sugar, or Grace Kraft. They look like this:
And you shouldn't come across these other ones because they're ridiculously rare, but if you do find either of these covers, please know you have found an Original Comic #1. The one on the right is Rebecca Sugar’s. The one on the left is by Danny Cragg (credited to Amber Rogers).
Original Comics Trade Paperback
Contains 4 Original Comics issues + cover gallery & bonus content
Published 2015
Generally retailed at $14.99 USD
Volume 1 of 2
To make things more complicated, most comic series that come out in individual issues will later be released in trade paperback editions--for this series, it'll be the first four issues combined into one sturdier, thicker book, and you'll also see that labeled #1 or Volume 1. If you see this one and it is listed online as a trade paperback (and is selling for more than you think a comic book would), it is probably a compilation of Original Comic 1–4. It features the same cover art as individual #1′s main cover art, by Bridget Underwood. You may see Volume 1 referred to as “Believe In Steven,” with Volume 2 listed as “Keep Beach City Weird.”
You can get all of the content from the individual issues by buying the trade paperbacks, plus both the trade paperbacks for the Original Comics have bonus content (a cover gallery and extra stories that aren't individually released anywhere). Be careful not to mix these up with Volumes 1 and 2 of the later 2017 series comics (discussed below).
Steven Universe and the Crystal Gems Comic Series
4 issues total
Ran in 2016
Generally retailed at $3.99 USD
Completed
This series is a complete arc featuring the Gems investigating the mystery of the Glass Ghost. It’s a continuing story that culminates in the last issue.
The main cover #1 of the individual paper issues (by Kat Leyh) is pictured above. You may also run into one of the EIGHT different variants of this cover. They are all #1 of the same content--first in the four-part series Steven Universe and the Crystal Gems. The artists are Allison Strejlau, Missy Peña, Sam Davies, Jeremy Sorese, Josceline Fenton, Steven Sugar, and Amber Rogers (whose name is now Danny Cragg).
Steven Universe and the Crystal Gems Comics Trade Paperback
Contains 4 Original Comics issues + cover gallery
Published 2016
Generally retailed at $14.99 USD
Complete in 1 volume
Steven Universe and the Crystal Gems’ trade paperback is generally labeled without a number, but some sites may still label it “Volume 1″ even though there is no Volume 2. You can get the complete story buying the trade paperback. Kat Leyh’s cover art from issue #3 is on the front cover of this collection.
Steven Universe 2017 Series Comics
36 issues
Ran from 2017–2020
Generally retailed at $3.99 USD
Completed
This series has one complete story in each paper issue, but the issues don’t connect to each other and can be read in any order (with the exception of an ongoing connected story that covered issues 25 to 28, but went back to individual stories after completion).
The main cover #1 of the individual paper issues (by Missy Peña) is pictured above. You may also run into one of the five different variants of this cover. They are all #1 of the same content. The artists are Missy Peña, Rian Sygh, and Jenn St-Onge.
2017 Series Comics Trade Paperback
Contains 4 2017-Series Comics issues + cover gallery
Published 2017
Generally retailed at $14.99 USD
Contains 1–4
Well this is awkward. You may see either of these covers and they are the same thing. “Volume One” may be on your cover and the spine, and/or it may say “Warp Tour”--a title they gave to Volume One apparently. (If you want to know how the 2017 Series Comics work in subsequent trade paperbacks, please know that Volume Two containing 5–8 is “Punching Up”; Volume Three containing 9–12 is “Field Researching”; Volume Four containing 13–16 is “Just Right”; Volume Five containing 17–20 is “Find a Way,” Volume Six containing 21–24 is “Playing By Ear,” Volume Seven containing 25–28 is “Our Fearful Trip,” Volume Eight containing 29–32 is “To Be Happy,” and Volume 9 containing 33–36 is “Cherished Memories.”) The cover art for this volume is Missy Peña’s art for 2017 Series Comic #1.
Steven Universe Harmony Comics
5 issues total
Ran in 2018
Generally retailed at $3.99 USD
Completed
Steven Universe: Harmony is a complete arc featuring the Gems investigating the mystery of the Harmony Core, balanced with Sadie Miller’s new life as a musician. It’s a continuing story that culminates in the last issue. The main cover #1 of the individual paper issues (by Marguerite Sauvage) is pictured above. You may also run into one of the four different variants of this cover. They are all #1 of the same content--first in the five-part series Steven Universe: Harmony. The artists are Savanna Ganucheau, Veronica Fish, Brittney Williams, and Sara Talmadge.
Harmony Trade Paperback
Contains 5 Original Comics issues + cover gallery
Published 2019
Generally retailed at $14.99 USD
Complete in 1 volume
Steven Universe Harmony’s trade paperback is generally labeled without a number, but some sites may still label it “Volume 1″ even though there is no Volume 2. You can get the complete story buying the trade paperback. Marguerite Sauvage’s cover art from issue #2 is on the front cover of this collection.
One-Shot Comic: Greg Universe Special
1 issue total
Published in 2015
Generally retailed at $4.99 USD
One-Shot
Surprise! Steven Universe: Greg Universe Special is labeled #1 even though there was never a #2. It features lovely sentimental stories by various artists about Greg Universe, Steven’s wonderful dad. The above main cover is by Ru Xu. You likely will NOT come across this variant of the Greg Universe Special by Fellipe Martins:
...But if you do see it, for the love of god buy it and let me pay you a bunch of money for it. Anyway, it’s a variant of the above and it contains the same stories.
One-Shot Comic: 2016 Special
1 issue total
Published in 2016
Generally retailed at $7.99 USD
One-Shot
Another surprise! Steven Universe: 2016 Special, also known as the Big Donut Special, is also labeled #1 even though there was never a #2. It features a bunch of stories that center around the Big Donut and its employees Sadie and Lars. The above main cover is by Ayme Sotuyo. You may also see these variants by Missy Peña and Katie Jones:
These two are variants of the above and they contain the same stories.
One-Shot Comic: Fusion Frenzy
1 issue total
Published in 2019
Generally retailed at $7.99 USD
One-Shot
Steven Universe: Fusion Frenzy is another comic labeled #1 even though there (I heard?) will not be a #2. It features five stories, each by a different artist/author combo, about a different Fusion (Stevonnie, Garnet, Smoky Quartz, Opal, Sugilite). The above main cover is by Nathalie Fourdraine. It actually connects with one of its variants (also by Nathalie Fourdraine) to make a full picture, and there are two more covers (by Abigail L. Dela Cruz and Alexandra Lillie).
These, like the other one-shots, are variants of the above and they contain the same stories. Fusion Frenzy is self-contained and the stories in it DO NOT APPEAR in any Trade Paperback. You have to find the single issue to read it--it’s a standalone. It may be released in the future as part of a larger compilation, but that has not happened yet and as far as I know has not been announced.
One-Shot Comic Trade Paperback Compilation: Welcome to Beach City
Includes the content of Greg Universe Special and 2016 Special
Published in 2019
Generally retailed at $14.99 USD
Contains two #1′s
For a long time the content for the Greg Universe Special and 2016 Special were not available if you couldn’t find individual paper issues, but that’s changed with Welcome to Beach City! It contains those two and their alternate cover galleries. The Fusion Frenzy from 2019 has not yet been released in a compilation, but these two have.
All-in-One Hardcover Edition
Includes the Original Comics from 2014 - 2015, the bonus comics that were included in the two graphic novel compilations, the 4 issues of Steven Universe and the Crystal Gems, the first twelve issues of the 2017 Series, and an abbreviated miniature cover gallery.
Published in 2019
Generally retailed at $45.00 USD
Does NOT contain one-shots, graphic novel content, or Harmony
This is a bit of a misnomer as it does not contain everything and stops at #12 of the 2017 series. (Obviously since it was an ongoing series at the time, you can’t publish a book of it until the series stops being ongoing, but if people want this because they think it’s everything, they should know it is not everything.)
Original Graphic Novels
Individual Novels
First one published in 2016
Generally retailed at $14.99 USD
Each is a One-Shot
As if this wasn't confusing enough with all these comic issues and variant covers and trade paperback versions of them, there are also original graphic novels! These are trade paperbacks that are complete in the large graphic novel form and were not previously individually released. They're legit graphic novels, and though the released volumes are not connected to each other story-wise, they are being labeled Original Graphic Novel 1, 2, 3, and so on.
The Original Graphic Novel #1 is called Too Cool for School. You may see it listed that way, or you may see it with no number. (For your information, Original Graphic Novel #2 is Anti-Gravity; OGN #3 is The Ultimate Dough-Down; OGN #4 is Camp Pining Play; and OGN #5 is Crystal Clean.)
Too Cool for School is about Steven trying to go to school with Connie for the first time. It has a second short story at the end about Vidalia having a yard sale. Its cover art is by Rosemary Valero-O’Connell and there are no variants.
Things that are not comics
You may run into the soundtrack, the show itself, minisodes of the show, or the coloring book. (If you want the coloring book, though, it's awesome. Just make sure you get the licensed one. People sell a lot of compilations that are edited screenshots and fanart, and they pretend they're official coloring books. They are not.)
Keep in mind also there are books--they tend not to have numbers on them, but if you see books such as The Answer, Guide to the Crystal Gems, Quest for Gem Magic, Steven Universe Mad Libs, What in the Universe?, Live from Beach City!, Best Buds Together Fun, Postcard Power!, Keep Beach City Weird!, Make Art! (On Purpose), Steven Universe: Art and Origins, Lion: Mane of Mystery, Fusion for Beginners and Experts, or the Steven Universe Sketchbook--these are standalone storybooks, insight books, or activity books for the series.
If you are a person attempting to purchase print media as a gift and just want a quick and dirty suggestion for what to buy:
Buy the graphic novels and the trade paperback compilations. Only die-hards will need every scrap of material, so it’s okay if you can’t find the Greg Universe Special or Big Donut Special. My recommendations:
Buying ONE ITEM for a comics fan? Get Warp Tour.
Buying TWO ITEMS for a comics fan? Get Warp Tour and Punching Up.
Buying a GROUP OF ITEMS for a comics fan? Just get them all the trade paperbacks, starting with Volume 1 (”Believe in Steven”).
Buying ONE ITEM for a fan of the show, and don’t know if they’re into comics? Consider Steven Universe and the Crystal Gems trade paperback, Anti-Gravity, or The Ultimate Dough-Down--they’re more like books--or you can actually get a regular book. Keep Beach City Weird is funny for any age and Steven Universe: Art and Origins is cool for deep diggers and older fans.
Buying INDIVIDUAL ISSUES? Absolutely recommend all of the one-shots--the Greg Universe Special, 2016 Special, and Fusion Frenzy. Try to scoop up the first few of the 2017 series OR, if the person’s experienced with comics, try the original series or Harmony.
Buying stuff for a completist? Start with old copies of #1 on eBay or KaBoom’s site. Open your wallet and cry.
Feel free to read my reviews of every piece of media in the franchise if that will help you.

#MarsMemory
30 Seconds To Mars é uma dessas bandas raras.
Tomo Milicevic: Sim. (risos)
K2K: Então poderíamos dizer que um "swing" ... TM: Não! MW: Não vá torcer as minhas palavras agora.
K2K: Quantos anos têm Jared e Shannon agora? TM: Estão velhos.
K2K: Velho como em seus 30 anos? MW: Velho como em seus 20 anos. TM: Eles não são novos. Só sei disso... eles são velhos.
K2K: Onde surgiu a banda? TM: Los Angeles.
K2K: De onde vem o nome da banda? TM: Isso é definitivamente algo do Jared.
Ok. (risos)
K2K: Do que as letras falam?
MW: Smoke On The Water [do Deep Purple] é bom para aprender acordes.. MW: OK. chato. MW: A semântica de Smoke On The Water por Tomo Milicevic. TM: Apenas tentando esclarecer algumas confusões. Isso é tudo. MW: Muito obrigado.
K2K: Fofo.
Obrigado. (Risos) Uma hora depois terminamos a discussão sobre Smoke On The Water. MW: Uau! Já ouvi essa conversa quatro vezes. "Eu estou certo e isso é tudo."
K2K: Quais outras canções relacionadas podemos discutir? TM: Muitas. MW: Oh, sim!
Cada show eles mudavam o nome.
K2K: Eu vi a banda pela primeira vez no Jay Leno. TM: Esse foi realmente o último show do primeiro guitarrista.
TM: Eu tenho 26. MW: Eu tenho 30.
TM: Sim. Temos toda a atenção.

Microworkouts: Effective, At Home Workouts In Two Minutes or Less
A lot of us get hung up on this idea of what an exercise session is supposed to look like. We think about driving over to the gym, squeezing into a crowded class, or working through a room full of complex contraptions, machines, and heavy plates. In our minds, it has to be a certain duration or intensity, or it doesn’t count. It has to have a warm-up and a cool-down, and we’re supposed to sweat so we’ll need to shower when it’s over. That mindset turns the simple act of moving your muscles into something you don’t have time for, something you’re too tired or sore to do today, something that seems too overwhelming for the moment you’re in right now. Don’t underestimate the power of short, at home workouts.
I’m challenging you to change your mindset, emerge from our flawed, dated and narrow approach to fitness and step into a much broader perspective about what it means to be fit. The concept of microworkouts is taking hold, and being touted by emerging science, respected coaches, trainers and elite athletes. I’m seeing a shift in the way people think about how to get fit: we’ve had enough with making the same mistakes over and over.
Microworkouts: Reframing our Approach to Exercise
The revolution is definitely a work in progress, and I still see misguided and destructive marketing messages and programming being thrust upon well-intentioned fitness enthusiasts. I still see the “no pain, no gain” approach being encouraged by fitness personalities and celebrated on social media.
For those of us willing to examine outdated beliefs and behavior patterns, and replace them with simple ways to get fitter, healthier, and happier, together we can help usher in a New Fitness movement.
I can attest that things like frequent traveling, minor aches and pains limiting certain activities, or hectic periods of work can throw me off even the most regimented fitness devotee. Often I won’t even realize that my routine has been slipping until I review my workout journals and realize I haven’t bagged a formal sprint session in three weeks.
Enter microworkouts.
What are Microworkouts?
Microworkouts are quick strength moves that you do throughout the course of the day. They can take a few seconds or a few minutes, they can be structured or unstructured, and you can roll them into the more mundane parts of your day, like waiting for your morning coffee to brew or going out to get the mail. These brief, at home workouts don’t seem like much while you’re doing them, but the effects compound over time.
Some examples of microworkouts:
Doing calf raises every time you climb the stairs in your house
Holding a plank while you’re waiting for your smoothie to blend
Ripping out a quick set of tricep dips at your desk before every meeting
The key is that you don’t overthink it. You do it, and then it’s over until you decide to do another microworkout. Even though they involve true energy expenditure, microworkouts seem effortless. The benefits compound over time, and you don’t feel like you’re disrupting the flow of your day at all.
In Keto For Life, we call it JFW, or Just F—ing Walk. Quick, at home workouts or microworkouts outdoors might sneak in there next. If it stops there for the day, great. Or, you may be up for that long-standing foundation of structured cardio, resistance training, or sprint workouts.
Reference the Primal Blueprint Fitness Pyramid recommending 2-5 hours per week of cardio at aerobic heart rates (180 minus age in beats per minute or below), two strength sessions per week lasting 10-30 minutes emphasizing functional, full-body movements, and one sprint workout every 7-10 days featuring all-out efforts lasting between 10-20 seconds with full rest between. These are simply guidelines. Life happens, and microworkouts are there to fill the gap.
Mark’s August 2019 post on microworkouts attracted a ton of feedback from readers. Clearly, this concept is taking hold in the fitness scene and is poised to become a major stand-alone element of a well-balanced program. Devoted MDA reader, Primal Health Coach, and 50+ athletic wonder Stephen Rader wrote a nice article with photos here. Rader mentions that microworkouts are great for skill acquisition because they don’t wear you out and can be performed frequently. He also pointed out that the Blue Zone research is touting the concept as a winning longevity component. Here’s a helpful podcast/video from Matt Schifferle at the Red Delta Project on the subject. He makes an excellent point that frequency and consistency are fitness essentials, and it can often be difficult to achieve those with a formal workout routine.
Matt makes the clever comparison that a microworkout is like chillin’ at home and watching Netflix, or watching a quick video on your mobile device, versus a proper evening out at the movie theaters. A theater experience is still fantastic (as is a full-length workout at the gym), but it’s not always practical, and it’s often less appealing than a micro-entertainment experience at home.
Thanks to forward thinking fitness leaders like Angelo dela Cruz, Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reece, Joel Jamieson, Brian MacKenzie, Dr. Craig Marker, and Dr. Kelly Starrett, we have things like mobility/flexibility training, recovery-based workouts, cold exposure and heat exposure, breath work, and High Intensity Repeat Training adding variety into our fitness plans.
How to do Quick and Effective at Home Workouts (With Video)
The possibilities for microworkouts are infinite! All you need is some creativity and a way to put your body under some form of resistance load. The most important success factor for microworkouts is to adopt the proper mindset and commitment to the project. This is the difficult part, because we have been socialized to view workouts as a big production, requiring significant time, energy, and logistics. The truth is, home workouts can be just as effective.
This all-or-nothing mindset can make you resistant to hauling off a single set of deep squats during a busy workday, because you might think, “what’s the point?” It’s important to embrace the idea that engaging in any and all manner of physical movement throughout the day is essential to your general health, particularly for fat burning and cognitive performance. Recall that sitting for as little as 15 minutes can deliver a significant decline in glucose tolerance and increase in insulin resistance. Simply standing up at work increases caloric expenditure by 10 percent. Talking a leisurely 15-minute walk after a meal lowers the insulin response by half. Walking every day is directly correlated with a boost in brain function.
Little things make a big difference. When some of your movement breaks include brief, explosive microworkout efforts, you enjoy not only the general benefits of movement, but also achieve a significant fitness benefit over time. If you start doing a single set of pull-ups here, a single set of deadlifts there, two years from now you will have hundreds of thousands of pounds and thousands of reps in the bank.
Here are four microworkouts that I do at home, including three that I have set up right in my home office.
Microworkout 1: Air Squat

Microworkout 2: Pull-ups, or Chin-ups

Microworkout 3: Stretch Cord Circuit

Microworkout 4: Hexbar Deadlift

Let’s take a three-step approach to excelling in microworkouts:
Commitment: I know your fitness to-do list is already long, not to mention your overall life to-do list. However, adding microworkouts into the mix is arguably the easiest way to boost your fitness. You don’t have to schedule time on your busy calendar, nor line up child care to escape for an hour to the gym. You simply have to acknowledge the importance of movement, and the incredible cumulative benefit of brief, explosive bursts, and make a sincere commitment to a microworkout program.
Environment: It’s essential to set yourself up for success with cues, triggers, implements, and apparatuses that make microworkouts compelling and impossible to ignore. The videos accompanying this piece offer some clever suggestions to help you get into the groove. Making a minimal investment in some Stretch Cordz gives you a ton of options to work different muscle groups. Ditto for installing a pull-up bar, a TRX kit, or having a kettlebell nearby. Beyond actual equipment, there are other environmental cues you can associate with microworkouts. For example, if you mount your pullup bar in your closet door, entering the closet is call for a set of pullups. Ditto for my hex bar located on the route to the garbage barrel. Put your microworkout triggers in plain sight, begging you to engage. If the example is doing a set of deep squats at your work desk, write a sticky note or use an app to generate a reminder every two hours. Alas, dialing in your environment will not automatically lead to success unless you integrate the next objective…
Incentives, Rewards, and Benchmarks: Establish some minimum standards to accomplish each day, such as one set of deep squats, one set of Stretch Cordz, and one additional effort choosing from pull-ups or kettlebells. Enter it into your calendar or display a simple sticky note. Don’t break for lunch or leave the office for the evening until you have completed your bare minimum objectives. When I finish a thoughtful email, hang up a lengthy phone call, or reach a natural breaking point in my writing, I’ll reward myself with a cognitive break in the form of a microworkout. If you can enroll a partner in your microworkout journey, this is the best source of inspiration and accountability. Perhaps you can meet in the building stairwell for a quick sprint up two flights of stairs at least once a day, or more by invitation. If you enjoy relaxing in the evening with digital entertainment, establish a rule that you’ll do at least one set of something during each episode of your binge-watch. There are many more ideas of this nature to consider, but it really helps to put some structure into the picture and take it seriously. Seriously, don’t leave the office, ever, until you do at least one set of deep squats every day.
Hopefully the videos will create some inspiration and momentum for your at home workouts. Let me know how microworkouts are going for you, and perhaps share some of your clever ideas for environment, incentives, rewards and benchmarks with the community. Good luck!
