The Duke of Cambridge has opened up about his own experiences of feeling 'very sad and very down' while working for the air ambulance.
One particular incident 'took him over the edge', he added.
William said he was lucky to have worked for the RAF and the East Anglian Air Ambulance, because of their good mental health working practices.
Speaking about his time with the air ambulance, he said: 'Talking was really important, but even that wasn't quite enough for one particular incident for me.
'I worked several times on very traumatic jobs involving children, and after I had my own children I think the relation between the job and the personal life was what really took me over the edge, and I started feeling things that I have never felt before, and I got very sad and very down about this particular family.'
The Duke of Cambridge has opened up about his experiences of feeling 'very sad and very down' during his time serving in the Air Ambulance
William served in East Anglian Air Ambulance for two years until July 2017 and said that some of the 'traumatic' jobs involving child, one of which 'took him over the edge'
It is understood he was discussing an accident involving a child.
Talking to colleagues helped him to 'come to terms with the enormous sadness' of what had happened, he added.
The duke was speaking at the inaugural This Can Happen conference at The O2 in London on Tuesday, which aims to address mental health issues in the workplace.
About 120 employers from different sectors were represented at the event, which was attended by roughly 750 people.
He urged employers to look after the mental health of workers.
While taking part in a panel discussion, William added: 'We spend a vast amount of our time at work.

He was joined on stage by former police officer Edward Simpson for the talk on Tuesday
'There should be a much more open, supportive and compassionate working environment to deal with those sorts of problems.
'There's still a stigma about mental health. We are chipping away at it but that wall needs to be smashed down.'
Workers need to feel they can speak to people in the HR department, he added.
He also spoke about the responsibility of looking after his own staff, who he said sometimes work 'silly hours'.
It is important they 'keep an eye on the hours they work' and the commuting they do, he added.
Prince William braved the wet weather on Tuesday to attend the 'This Can Happen' conference in the capital
William campaigns alongside the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex for mental health initiative Heads Together.
Despite the downpour the father-of-three appeared to be in good spirits as he arrived at the Intercontinental hotel in the capital.
The conference brings together hundreds of delegates from the UK and further afield to share best practice in multiple different fields.
'This Can Happen' has been created by Zoe Sinclair of 'Employees Matter', with Jonny Benjamin and Neil Laybourn.
Neil and Jonny came to prominence through Channel 4's 'Strangers on The Bridge' programme, which told the story of how Jonny tried to find the friendly 'stranger', Neil, who had spoken to him on Waterloo Bridge and convinced him not to take his own life.
The conference aims to highlight solutions and innovation to support mental health
Despite the downpour the prince appeared to be in good spirits as he arrived at the Intercontinental hotel this morning
Jonny Benjamin, now 31, who lives in south London, was 20 years old when he sat on Waterloo Bridge in 2008 preparing to jump - until passerby Neil Laybourn persuaded him not to.
Six years after the incident Jonny launched a social media search to help him find the stranger on the bridge and the pair were eventually reunited live on ITV's morning show - then called Daybreak.
In 2017, Jonny and Neil ran the London Marathon together as part of The Royal Foundation's Heads Together campaign.
In October, His Royal Highness launched 'Mental Health at Work', the latest initiative from Heads Together and the mental health charity Mind, which provides free resources to companies wanting more help to support their employees' wellbeing.
The prince clutched as his blazer as he made his way into the hotel for the conference
It's been a busy time for the Duke and Duchess who last week carried out a string of engagements in addition to joining the celebrations for Prince Charles' 70th birthday.
After spending the day in Yorkshire on Wednesday last week, they were helicoptered back to London in time for William's father's birthday bash.
And on Friday night, the couple joined the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at a 'secret' glamorous event with Anita Rani and singer Tom Walker on Friday night.
Kate Middleton, Prince William, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry headed to the glitzy bash which had been 'kept under wraps' by Kensington Palace.

Duchess dresses down in a £400 Dubarry jacket, £250 boots and skinny jeans to muck in with children at a community garden – telling them ‘George and Charlotte would love to be learning outside’

Excerpt:
Country girl Kate, who turned 37 last week, is visiting the King Henry’s Walk Garden in Islington to see how the project brings people together through gardening and food growing.
The Duchess of Cambridge was element today as she visited the community garden in North where she was introduced to an open air pizza kitchen.
‘Pizza outside sounds like the coolest thing ever’ said Kate as she spoke to local school children as she helped to make bird feeders with them.
She later added that her own children would be jealous while making pizzas with a group of school children from nearby St Jude’s and St Paul’s Primary School to make pizza which was then fired in an outdoor oven.
As she rolled out her dough, chatting with a group of Year 4 youngsters, Nadirah, eight, asked her: ‘Has the Queen ever eaten pizza?’
‘That’s such a good question, I don’t know,’ smiled the duchess. ‘Maybe next time I see her shall I ask?’
Emboldened, her classmate Patrick, eight, said; ‘Here’s my ideal question. Can I see your children?’
Kate replied: ‘They would love to come and do this with you. They will be very sad that I’ve been out here waking pizzas with all of you and they haven’t been here. They are in school.’
