Top 10 Games of 2020
Time again for PawelCyril/SodaPaladin’s GOTY 2020 countdown! As usual, these are not games that came out in 2020, but games that I played in 2020. At least when it came to gaming, I had a great year.
Honorable Mentions: Final Fantasy VIII: I loved everything about this game except for the actual gameplay. I didn’t enjoy the battle system one bit. Far too many flawed ideas. But everything else was so enjoyable. The story was cheesy and ridiculous, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. It might actually be my favorite main Final Fantasy.
Fall Guys: This TV show-esque challenge is tons of fun with friends, even though I’ve still yet to win a single time. See Saw is the worst game, btw, and if you like it, I hate you. :)
Sonic Mania: Best Sonic game in years that made me smile from ear to ear, but I forgot if I played it this year or last year, so I’ll put it here haha.
10. Super Metroid: I finally played my “first” Metroid game after years of friends badgering me, and they were right. It’s a good game. I’m not as wild about the music and map design as some people, but it is indeed a fun game that holds up well. The atmosphere of the ghost ship was incredible.
9: Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution: I’m a casual Yugioh fan at best, having not played since the GX era. I like the original manga and first few anime series, but everything in the past decade is a mystery to me. Feeling nostalgic, I bought this hoping it wouldn’t be too overwhelming, and was pleasantly surprised with how accessible it is to all sorts of fans. There are tons of cards and opponents from all eras of Yugioh. I’ve learned to play with the new abilities, and can also enjoy the rules like I’m used to by playing through Duelist Kingdom. I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I do, but I could easily put dozens of more hours in.
8: Ogre Battle 64: I’m still apparently near the beginning of this game after 40 hours, because I’m the slowest gamer on earth, but I’m enjoying every minute of it. While I love strategy games, they tend to be turn-based. This RTS RPG has been super satisfying.
7: Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night: It’s exactly what I expected it to be: Symphony of the Night 2. And that’s a good thing. I have some minor gripes with the bloated inventory and crafting systems, but the core exploration is a joy.
6: Super Mario Odyssey: Of course it’s great. I’m sure everybody knows this already, so I don’t have much to say. The amount of love put into all of the costume references made me smile with each one. Rocking the Picross explorer suit!
5: Persona 5 Royal: I hadn’t put too much time into the vanilla P5, so I figured I may as well play the definitive version when I saw it on sale. I have loads of complaints about the story, characters, and abysmal pacing, but despite all of that, it’s still a stylish, fun game that I’m enjoying a lot.
4: Animal Crossing New Horizons: You all knew this would be on here. The timing for this game was perfect. I haven’t touched it in a couple months now only because I know I’ll get sucked back in, and I’ve already put in a couple hundred hours.
3: Street Fighter III: Third Strike: Never expected to get into fighting games this year, but here we are. I picked up the SF Anniversary Collection on a whim because it was a sale. I mainly intended to play SF2, the one I’m most familiar with, but gave Third Strike a try because my good friend @arkthepieking recommended it. I can see why. This game is smooth. I’ve since tried other fighting games to recapture that magic, but I started with the best. The intrinsic motivation of winning through your own skill, from hard work and practice, is such a great feeling. Makoto forever.
2: Moon: Remix RPG Adventure: As a fan of Chulip, I had been curious about Moon for a long time, and I’m so happy it finally was released in English. It’s exactly what I hoped it would be: Chulip 0. The core ideas are still there, but better executed due to being less punishing. The music system where you buy CDs was a fun, novel idea at the time, and the atmosphere as a whole is charming. It’s an incredible, unique experience that I don’t think everyone would enjoy, but those who give it a chance may discover something wonderful.
1: Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling: Sometimes with spiritual successor fan games, I can’t help but feel I’d rather play the original. Like I love WarGroove, but it doesn’t quite scratch the same itch as just playing Advance Wars sometimes. I expected Bug Fables to be a cute love letter to Paper Mario, but it blew my expectations away. I would dare say it even surpasses Paper Mario in many ways. Everything about it is a delight. The story, the characters, the battles, the music, and the setting. There are tons of sidequests for backstory and lore, too. The main trio are so likeable, each having their own motivations and feeling like the main character of their own story, and I’m amazed at how naturally they warmed up to each other over the course of the game. Bug Fables may be one of my favorite games period, and I cannot emphasize enough how much I love it.

Super Mario - Considering the Starting
youtube
smm2
Mario Is easily among the most recognizable faces to come from Nintendo, but did you know his original name was Jumpman? That is correct, in 1981 Mario first appeared in Donkey Kong, but afterward, he went by the title of Jumpman, but Mario was utilized as his title at certain promotional material.
smm2
This Game amazed Nintendo with its intense victory. To check the prevalence of Mario, Nintendo released an arcade game named Marion Bros., which comprised Mario and his brother Luigi. This match was a massive success for Nintendo. Due to the success of the Donkey Kong and Mario Bros., in 1983, when Nintendo launch the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), they also release Super Mario Bros..
References to his Original title appear in a few of all Mario games, like in Paper Mario: the Thousand-Year Door, even once an audience member describes Mario as Jumpman prior to a struggle, and at Mario Hoops 3-on-3, where his nickname is"The Jumpman."
Mario's appearance, even to this present day, may be Blamed the constraints which were put on the developers and musicians back in the early 80s by their present technologies.
The Programmers could not animate Mario's arms once he transferred without making them vanish, so they gave him overalls and a good shirt color.
They Also did not have space for a face or earsand could not reestablish his own hair, so that they gave him his own mustache, sideburns, and a baseball cap. Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario's founder, has said in interviews that Mario wears a baseball cap since he finds it difficult to draw hair.
Mario's Surname or last name can also be Mario, which clarifies why the usage of Mario Bros. as match titles, since Luigi is Mario's brother, therefore that they have the exact same name. Was first utilized in The Super Mario Bros.. Super Show, and then again in 1993 at a film named Super Mario Bros.. Nintendo as a whole hasn't formally confirmed it, but it had been set on Nintendo of Europe's official Mario Megasite.
Ever since Mario continues to be Popular he's become the unofficial mascot of Nintendo. He's been exceptionally and potentially over-merchandised alongside his one time rival Sonic the Hedgehog, who was Sega's mascot from the early 1990s.
They Competed fiercely until 2001, when Sonic Adventure 2: Battle came out to get a Nintendo console due to Sega's new third party standing. Though Sonic and Mario were on Nintendo consoles, they competed with one another, although less as before.
It has not been until Lately, that they have been spotted working together from the recently released Mario & Sonic in the Olympic Games for its Wii. They'll also look in Super Smash Bros.. Brawl collectively too.
Foot tall, portly plumber in Brooklyn, New York who lives in Mushroom Kingdom. He's regarded as the most well-known video game character ever, along with his series of matches has sold over 193 million copies.
Mario Has not just emerged in plat formers, but in other genres too. Another genres include hitting, together with Mario Kart, sports games like Mario Tennis, and RPGs like Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars.
Even though Mario's said job has been a plumber, he's Almost never noticed doing any true pipes. Together with the exceptions being in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and at the first Mario Bros.. Plumbing have remained a mode of transport, however, even though the motive as to why may not be apparent. Nonetheless, in the first Donkey Kong games, Mario, that was called Jumpman, was really a carpenter.
Mario has also emerged as a physician in Dr. Mario. He Has been revealed as an archaeologist from the Game Boy game, Mario's Picross.
Mario's favourite pastime Appears to be rescue Princess Other manners he spends his time is fighting villains, namely Bowser. From the role-playing matches, Mario has been provided a heroic position for saving the Mushroom Kingdom a lot of occasions. In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, he and Luigi are known as"superstars", which essentially means enormous celebrities.
Ever since his initial look In a movie game, Mario was awarded the part of the protagonist, destined to rescue the damsel in distress. From the first Donkey Kong, he needed to rescue his girlfriend, Pauline from Donkey Kong. Pauline clearly did not remain in the show, as she had been substituted by Princess Peach, that had been initially known as"Princess Toadstool" or simply"the Princess" from the English releases, in Super Mario Bros..
In 1993, Together with the launch of Yoshi's Safari, Princess Peach was eventually utilized within an English launch of a Mario game, but it wasn't used as extensively until the launch of Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64, three decades later. Pauline has just been seen twice as the first Donkey Kong, after from the movie for the Game Boy, also after in Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, in 2006.
She's been described as Mario's buddy, not girlfriend, because seems to be Peach's place. Mario has obtained a kiss against her innumerable times, after every time he has spared her, but the genuine status of the relationship hasn't been formally disclosed, most likely to prevent the issues experienced with Pauline, however there's obviously affection shared between Mario and Peach.
The Majority of Mario's skills come in the things that he Collects and utilizes. From the platform matches, there's the Super Mushroom, making Mario double in size. He's known as"Super Mario", when he's in this condition, and in addition, he has an excess hit point.
Additional Examples of things incorporate the Fire Flower, which turns Mario to Fiery Mario, or only Fire Mario. This permits him to throw fireballs in his enemies. Another product is that the star, making Mario completely believable, and enables him to conquer all enemies using one touch.
In Other variations of Mario plat formers, you will find additional unique objects, like the Raccoon Leaf, along with the Cape Feather. The Raccoon Leaf turns Mario to Raccoon Mario, also enables him to fly short distances by thumping his tail round in the atmosphere, kind of like Tails in the Sonic the Hedgehog games.
The Cape Feather clearly turns Mario into Cape Mario, which permits him to whip his cape at enemies to strike, and allows him to fly. In Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Mario can select up the Power Carrot, which transforms Mario to Bunny Mario and leaves his falling rate decreased.
Evidently, Mario is a very Popular personality, that has been in several matches, and has inspired Indie games and online flash gamesthat make a lot of hits and plays with Since they're free. With the increasing requirement for new games, you can Start looking for Mario to maintain evolving and testing the seas in genres that are new as well. The future remains as bright for Mario since it had been 20 decades back.

[Comic] Mario’s Picross manga collection
More rare Benimaru Itoh comics for you, this time from Shogakukan’s Wonder Life Special guidebooks for the first three Picross games from Jupiter (Mario’s Picross (GB), Mario’s Super Picross (SNES), and Picross 2 (GB)). Again they are in full, vibrant colour and read left-to-right and with sound effects in English already, so they’re very accessible. Also I translated all the text from Japanese into English.
Also included are all the unique artworks that Itoh drew for the books, collated and cleaned up. I love his style! I also love Peach’s outfits, Wario’s absurd villain portrayal, and Picross puzzles being an integral part of the comic’s plot.
Thanks again to Ragey for the scans, and it’s worth checking out the raws because these books also contain a wealth of unique Picross puzzles in their pages. There are solvable puzzles during the comic, but some of them had been filled in already by the book’s previous owner. And I didn’t bother translating any text explaining how to solve Picross that appeared in the comic sections.

My other scanlations are in the blog’s tag

It's such a shame how many JP only Nintendo made games there are
Nowadays there shouldn’t be much stopping you from playing their older JP only games as they should be easy to emulate or find a used copy online. Navigating Japanese menus isn’t difficult and some games even get fan translations.
And with their newest games they tend to release them in English in most cases.
Nintendo even re-releases some of the old JP only games every now and then digitally. Like Mario’s Super Picross got re-released on the Virtual Console outside of Japan even though it was originally a JP only title.
It’s more of a problem when it comes to RPGs or dialogue heavy games, but like I mentioned earlier there are fan translations for some of them.

E3 2017 predictions
E3 predictions
In general these come from my thoughts, but also include ideas I’ve heard floated around the web which I completely agree with. Avoiding the already announced/leaked stuff, since that’s not fun!
I’ve sort predictions for all main presentations into 3 different categories based on likelihood (“Lock it in, Reggie” (very confident), “50/50” and “swinging for the fences” (super unlikely but I gotta go all in)). Also, because I’m Connell, this skews Nintendo, but I do have thoughts on everyone! And almost entirely positive ones!
These are in order of the presentation times, hence Nintendo being last. Oh, and a shadow drop is an unannounced game or feature being available for download immediately.
General Predictions/Trends:
- One final push for remastered collections.
- The PC gaming show will be a shit-show again.
- After “Seven Nation Army” did so well for the Battlefield 1 trailer, at LEAST 3 other trailers will use a contemporary song for a game set in another time.
EA:
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Need for Speed will have a Cops vs Racers mode. Because it is always the best thing. Shutting down fools for daring to turn MY roads into a race track is always the best.
- FIFA presentation will not mention the Switch version at all. Info will only be turned up at the show floor, with 2-3 units available. There will be a very simple token minigame so they can justify it as being “built for switch”, but it is 99% the PS3/360 version.
50/50:
- Mass Effect 1-3 Remastered collection, for PS4 and Xbox one. Designed to win back trust from gamers who were burned hard by Andromeda, which really damaged the brand. This leads to my further prediction (not for this though) that ME5 then connects both stories together, where the Andromeda crew find a device that allows them to send a message with information back in time to Shephards brain and bam, you’re playing with the character’s people liked again.
- Sim City. It’s been long enough since the last Sim City, which was disastrous. Time for EA to show they learned from their mistakes and can take on city: skylines
Singing for the fences:
- Mass Effect Trilogy also for the Switch. Despite the only support being a terrible FIFA game thus far, the actual sales of the system will be seen as an opportunity… to sell old games again with very little extra work. Perhaps some token amiibo functionality in the character creator.
Microsoft:
Obviously, this will be all about Scorpio. Every game will make a point to include something about how the Scorpio version is enhanced. Also apologies, don’t really have much
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Forza 5.
- Scorpio will have VR featured heavily
50/50:
- Scorpio’s final name will be: Xbox Scorpio. Microsoft is done with numbers.
50/50:
- It will be revealed that Scorpio, unlike PS4Pro, will have games exclusive to it.
Swinging for the fences:
- Crackdown demo shadow drop
- Exclusive John Wick videogame for scorpio
- BATTLETOADS
Bethesda:
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Wolfenstein Titan(?) official reveal.
- Prey DLC chapters.
50/50:
- Switch Skyrim has Zelda content in it. Because why else would someone pay $60 US for this game for a third time?
- Elder Scrolls VI revealed. Will feature at least 2 of the regions. Possibly Elsweyr and Valenwood
Swinging for the fences:
- Elder Scrolls finally bring back the Dwemer, either by reviving them or setting it in the distant past.
Ubisoft:
So… most of this conference is already leaked, but still…. Uh… hm. Well here’s a few somethings.
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Rabbids/Mario will have a CG teaser. Gameplay saved for Nintendo.
50/50:
- On stage reveal for Farcry will include not only making fun of the people who got so angry that the villians are a white Christian cult, but there will be an embarrassing on-stage play where people pretend to be storming the stage to protest the treatment of horrible people.
Swinging for the fences:
- A switch exclusive Assassin’s Creed side-story, much like they did for Vita around Assassin’s Creed 3.
- Rabbids/Mario features a cover of “All Star”, covered by Rabbids themselves, because this game will be drowning in memes. And I will hate this while secretly loving this.
Sony:
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Sony saves IO interactive, Hitman 2 will be PS4 exclusive. Microsoft SHOULD do this, but… this feels more like a Sony move.
- MASSIVE Spiderman blowout, including a lot of show floor stuff. Playable demo. No tie in to the movie, but instead a new story with Goblin and the sinister 6 as the villians. And there’ll be some shitty day 1 pre-order crap, probably involving a Black Cat side story. F4 will cameo, but play no major roles – however Insomniac will be building a shared games universe. Yes, even with the Squaresoft stuff.
- Bloodborne 2. It will happen.
50/50:
- A real, honest to god Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer, with worlds revealed, including Moana and Frozen.
- Shenmue 1+2 Remastered announced. With Shenmue 3 delayed (and that having been inevitable for some time), this would be a smart move to capitalise on the clear demand for more Ryo.
- Another Last of Us Part 2 teaser, but no gameplay yet.
- English Dragon Quest XI release date, mid 2018.
- Red Dead 2 trailer, first with actual gameplay. I also think this will reveal that Zelda-like free climbing is being implemented.
Swinging for the fences:
- The vita returns as a phone. The switch has shown portable games are still viable, vita has some life in Asian territories, and Sony want to keep the remote play train going. Destined to still fail? Probably! But let’s not let reality kill HYPE.
- Last of Us Part 2 prelude chapter available now, for free. One hour of set up, basically a demo. But that’s what they do to get the kids excited.
- Spyro Trilogy remastered. Activision gotta do something with the guy.
- Red Dead 2 trailer showcases a train heist. I LOVE train heists.
Nintendo:
In general, there won’t be much or any 3DS. They’re getting a lot of that out of the way this week already.
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Xenoblade 2 is not delayed, December 2018. Playable on show floor.
- Mario Odyssey for October 2017. Massive show floor presence.
- Mario Kart DLC, same format as for WiiU – 2 packs of tracks, but this time it’s 8 racing and 2 battle tracks, as well as 3 characters and karts each. A shadow drop of the ability to buy the
- Zelda DLC part 1 shadow drop. Teaser for the rest of the DLC.
- Picross Switch, available now. Not Picross 3D though, they’ll hold off on that.
- Rabbids/Mario gameplay demo
- Dragon Quest XI for Switch officially announced
- Everyone on stage will wear goofy hats because of Mario Odyssey, because hats is a big thing in that game. Hats will grant abilities.
- Splatoon 2 test fire round 2 will be announced to begin the next weekend, with significant tweaks.
- New ARMs content announced, with new ARMs avaialable immediately and
50/50:
- Massive update to switch UI, shadow dropped. Includes multiple UI styles, with Badge arcade built in for further customisation, folders, linking to old Nintendo friends lists, musical themes. Further themes will be on eshop going forward, like 3DS. And finally, this also includes the new online system, hence the new details revealed about it last week.
- Animal Crossing Switch. Early 2018, with much improved social features. Massive amiibo functionality, much like New Leaf now has. It’ll have a new hook, not sure what though. My guess is some Sim City style mayoral stuff like setting up and supplying utilities.
- Warioware Switch, holiday 2017. It’s been a while for the Rhythm Heaven/Warioware team. I NEED THIS ONE NINTENDO.
- Smash Brothers 4 Switch, Q2 2018, rereleased with the best levels from the WiiU and 3DS levels, plus an expanded single player mode. It’s just too crowded for this game yet, but they don’t need to hold off for too long, because it’ll be an evergreen. There will be a teaser though, starring Inklings, Ice Climbers and Spring Man.
- Mario Maker Switch for Q1 2018. It can’t release this year, it needs space away from Mario Odyssey. The game will include a new “switch” block which when hit in game alternates the game style. There will also be playable Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad for each game type, each with different styles, and a different switch block or pipe that changes your character mid-level.
- Skyward Sword HD for switch, with optional non-motion controls for boring people. Q2 2018.
- Partnership with Activision to make an Amiibo action game. You might think this is a swing for the fence, but: Toys for Bob is out of a gig right now. And this would sell better than any recent Skylanders game. Activision would release special versions of select characters, so they can get their cut from the toy sales.
- Donkey Kong Country Returns 3, Q1 2018, by Monster Games. They’ve been quiet for a while, they ported Returns to 3DS, they assisted Retro on Tropical Freeze, this is what they’ve been working towards.
- Dead Cells announced for Switch.
- Layton Collection announced… for phone. Lady Layton western release date.
- Retro’s game. And it’s NOT Metroid, but a sci-fi Western RPG.
- This is a long shot, but T2 is relatively impressed by the switch, so: GTA5 for Switch. With a chunk of the DLC included.
- Switch Sports, holiday 2017. The return of the king. All the games as released for WiiU, plus a few from Wii Sports resort (airplane), with additional modes for each sport. I do have a “swinging for the fence” on this though…
Swinging for the fences:
- …Wuhu World. Remember Pilotwings 64? Where Little USA was a huge island with different activities, sights to see, and so on? Well, take Wuhu Island, scoot up the detail and resolution, include the small surrounding golf islands, and add a few other themed islands the same size as Wuhu (snow island, city island, etc). It’s a free game where you get the islands and one activity per island, and can walk/drive around each island. Dotted around each is various locations that count as home bases for various sports/vehicles from Wii Sports, Pilotwings and some new items. Each of these is paid, and comes with various different modes and missions. This could be further expanded over time, and allows Nintendo to make money from series that could no longer be sold alone.
- Mario Kart DLC includes mission mode, which is available day 1 with missions on existing courses and expands with the DLC.
- New 2D Metroid by a small team from within Retro. There is a 3D game teased to be in the works also, but not from Retro.
- Splatoon 2 Octoling content and Amiibo, including Octoling mascots. I need this, Nintendo.
- EXCITE. TRUCK. 2.
- Nintendo Pinball. Remember Pokemon Pinball? And Metroid Prime Pinball? That but across multiple Nintendo series.
- Sonic and Mario All Stars Racing Transformed. Sumo has to have been making something aside from Snake Pass, and Sonic Racing 2 sold extremely well on the switch.
- Assault Android Cactus Deluxe for Switch. I believe in you Tim! Even if you aren’t even attempting this!

Engaging Super Mario Games To Play Online
Mario is definitely one of the vital recognizable faces to come back out of Nintendo, but do you know his authentic title was Jumpman? That's proper, Crazy Killing Machine in 1981 Mario first appeared in Donkey Kong, but then, he went by the name of Jumpman, but Mario was used as his name in some promotional materials.
This game stunned Nintendo by its excessive success. To test the popularity of Mario, Nintendo launched an arcade recreation referred to as Marion Bros., which included Mario and his brother Luigi. 2018 summary
This was the year that was. What did I spend my time playing and doing in 2018?
I can identify a few trends in the games I chose to play this year. One is Star Wars games, inspired by my watching through some Star Wars shows and reading comics. None of the games really blew me away but with the franchise being on my mind I made quite a few pixel art collages, the most intense one being my attempt to portray as many Clone Wars-era Jedi as I could.
The monthly game club I manage was a success in its first full year, leading me to many unusual avenues from Tamagotchi to In Cold Blood, Crazy Taxi to Hamtaro. I didn’t review all the games I played through it, only the ones I finished, but there was a good variety. Some also led me to follow a series outside of the game club; I started a retrospective on Spyro from last year’s play of Spyro 2 which will continue in the new year. I also jumped off my own nomination of Rockman Zero 2 to immerse myself in the post-Mega Man offshoots, with the pleasing Mighty No. 9 and disappointing Gunvolt.
Other games I played were followups to previous chains, with my lifelong Picross obsession ticking along, or Sega Superstars Tennis continuing my Jet Set Radio retrospective (indirectly branching into Sonic Generations through Rush). I also put a fair bit of attention on the DS, and got some joy out my new (used) PS2, especially with an Ecco followup.
Other than that I had a great time streaming (Wednesdays 1pm Australian Eastern Time), despite little external encouragement. This year I had a heavy feminist theme: every week I streamed myself playing a new game or games starring heroine characters. This idea was a lot of fun to plan game picks around, including occasional sub-themes like robot heroines, Namco heroines, heroines of colour, etc. All the streams have been archived here, and here’s a pixel art summary of the characters I discovered through them (part 2 coming soon). Next year will not be as focused but I will return to the heroine theme regularly.
Comic scanlations got a bump this year as I found Ragey’s archive of excellent scan material. Thanks to him, I was able to release small comics based on Diddy Kong Racing, Star Fox, Rayman, Zelda 2, Mario’s Picross, and various other Mario games in English for the first time. See them all in the scanlation tag. However, I’m most pleased with the collection of manga snippets related to the 1993 Super Mario Bros film that I collated and translated.
A roundup of any miscellaneous blog content: I made a video showing all of Donkey Kong Jr.’s adventures in various versions of his game, updated my humorously comprehensive Zelda timeline for probably the last time in its current form, and did a penultimate update to my archive of Donkey Kong Card Game material (only one card image still missing!). Finally, I recently began a Doctor Who pixel art series, starting with all classic Doctors and their companions.
As for awards... it’s too hot today. I liked Bloodborne, Overcooked, Sonic Generations 3DS, and Mighty Gunvolt Burst. I’m still playing co-op games with my spouse, but we only finished Lego TFA, which was a good time. See ya later, thanks for checking out my work this year.
