Providence, Rhode Island, -- A Rhode Island woman who posed as a U.S Marine Corps veteran fighting stage IV cancer to fraudulently obtain $250K in donations and veteran benefits has agreed to plead guilty, prosecutors said.
Sarah Cavanaugh, a social worker from East Greenwich, collected thousands from veteran benefit programs by forging military documents and obtained donations through a GoFundMe page she had set up, convincing Good Samaritans that she was fighting lung cancer, NY Post reported citing court documents.
Cavanaugh blamed her "illness" on the burn pits in Iraq, where she claimed she was posted. She appeared in public functions adorning a Marine uniform with replicas of Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals on them.
By faking the illness, she obtained benefits from programs like Wounded Warrior Project, Code of Support Foundation and CreatiVets. She even got 460 hours of Emergency Paid Leave worth over $20,000 and 261 hours of federal leave time worth $11,000, prosecutors said.
The scam was busted after two veterans who attempted to pay Cavanaugh's bill at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston found out that her account in the medical facility never existed.
An army veteran, identified as Simoni Chelsey, then contacted the military officials to check Cavanaugh's record and realized she never served in the military. "They searched and said she never served. That night I didn’t sleep at all," Chelsey said.
The investigation later revealed that Cavanaugh not only posed as a veteran but also faked her illness. Cavanaugh's job as a licensed social worker for Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Providence gave her access to the discharge records and medical bills of actual cancer patients. The woman then forged these documents to make them appear as if she had been honorably discharged and had cancer, prosecutors said, reported Military.com.
The 31-year-old faces multiple charges including wire fraud, identity theft, forging a military discharge certificate and fraudulent use of military medals. She has agreed to pay more than $82,000 in restitution.
Although Cavanaugh faces a maximum of 24 years in prison, prosecutors would recommend a lighter sentence as part of the plea agreement.

I’m actually studying Marine Biology right now! I’m hoping to become one after all my uni years are over but I know it will take a while, I’m going into specializing in porpoises, whales and sharks! But I do have a question, I do really care for marine life and I remember we had to dissect a perch and I started to cry for the fish, some people say I’d be a great marine biologist because of that, but other people say I’m too sensitive to be one. What do you think?
Too sensitive? Umm absolutely not!!
All this tells me is that if you want to go into veterinary care, you may wan to reconsider. I myself cannot stand blood. The hardest part about being in marine mammal rehab was when we had animals with bloody injuries. This does not mean you can't go into the field!! For cetaceans and sharks you have options both in research and and husbandry (zoos and aquariums).
If you choose to go the research route, I want to share some scientists who are cetacean biologists so you can look at what they do!
Dr. Anne Simonis: NOAA biologist who studies sounds cetaceans make
Dr. Eugenie Clark: "The shark lady" shark behavioral biologist
Dr. Keith Hernandez: Elephant seal population ecologist
Dr. James Harvey: vertebrate behavior research and professor
I can look for other resources more specifically related to porpoises and sharks but I encourage you to take a look at these scientists have done or are doing now. You may find what they're doing to be of interesting.

Gruppo Antonini to Launch La Spezia Shipyard
Gruppo Antonini to Launch La Spezia Shipyard
Gruppo Antonini, Italian industrial giant with years of experience in the oil and gas sector, has announced its intentions to establish a solid presence in the superyacht industry - with the launch of new brand Antonini Navi.
The project is the brainchild of yacht designer Aldo Manna, with the full support of the Antonini family and a planned investment fund of over 10 million euros.
The new brand launch is bolstered by three pillars of strength: Manna’s depth of experience in the superyachting world, the entrepreneurial expertise of the Antonini family, and the strategic primacy of the Cantiere Navale Marina di Pertusola shipyard on the Gulf of La Spezia – a global epicentre for superyacht manufacturing.
The shipyard will also be staffed with a team of world experts in the superyachting field, all based in La Spezia.
Antonini Navi aims to harmonise the world-class marine services already in operation by Gruppo Antonini with an all-round market offering, from construction of custom yachts up to 70 metres to a breadth of services ranging from refitting, after-sales and berthing. It will also continue to build for third parties, an established service by the brand already in operation for a number of years.
As well as custom build, the project also aims to bring the Crossover model range to the world superyacht fleet; a line of yachts from 30-50 metres penned by industry-renowned architect Fulvio de Simoni. The name speaks true to the line’s innovative and cross-market appeal.
“Antonini Navi is a dream that has always been dear to our family,” explains Simone Antonini, Partner and Chief Executive Officer at Antonini Navi. “In the 1980s, our grandfather Walter, who founded the business, recognised the enormous potential of the Pertusola site as a hub for yachting and related services. That is why we were so enthusiastic about Aldo’s proposal to set up Antonini Navi together.”
Aldo Manna, Antonini Navi creator and partner, comments, “This is a great project with solid foundations: the Antonini family still runs the industrial group that bears its name as a family business’, in which personal, human relationships are always the true cornerstone of the business model. Now more than ever, clients feel the need to deal directly with the owners of a shipyard and not just with investment fund managers.”

Blood Games-051317M41 Custodes and Knights of Ajax engage in a spirited Blood Game to rouse the self-admitted rusty Custodes from their inactivity. The Knights unleashed a devastating fusillade in their opening salvo, with Sgt Gwen blasting the anti-grav plates off the Custodes Land Raider and causing Techmarine Judis to weep oily tears of sorrow, and his firing accuracy decreased, chipping a friendly Rhino with his Thunderfire cannon. Chapter Master Juche landed with his Sternguard and after a fusillade of hellfire rounds, but were soon dragged into combat with the Custodes, who slaughtered their way through the Sternguard and leaving them to the attentionsof the Apothecary. Soon only Chapter Master Juche was left standing, and only then for a few moments before the custodes overwhelmed him with their spear thrusts. However the larger forces of the Knights had control of most of the battlefield, barely seizing control of the Blood Game. The two units shook bloodied palms and parted as allies, enjoying the lessons learned from the bout. Custodian Vin Diesel stood up against Castidian Fellfall for three hours, for both to congratulate one another for surviving. Vs Nurgle Daemons on a swamp plague world (Lost) Bouyed by their encounter with the Custodes, the Knights decided to take the light of the Imperium into the foetid world of Simonis, formerly an Ad-Mech research station now under attack by daemons of the Plague God, whos wanted to convert the vile place into a daemonworld. Things began to go wrong from the beginning, as Chapter Master Juche's drop pod and Fellfall's were mixed up in the drop order. Fellfall's limbs were quickly disintegrated by the acidic slime of the Plaguebearers who assailed him, despite his attempts to fight his way towards the great unclean one leading the daemons. Further difficulties ensued as the Warp spewed forth plage drones and swarmed both a combat squad of Marines and the Thunderfire cannon manned by techmarine Judis. Though they were forced to fall back and leave the destroyed cannon and rhino where they were, Chapter Master Juche's situation was even worse, as his Sternguard were cut down leaving his drop pod stranded in the middle of a horde of Plaguebearers. To the Knight's humiliation the Adeptus Mechanicus members of the resarch station rode out to rescue them, pushing the plaguebearers back with the power of their ancient weaponry. Vs AdMech on a swamp world (Won) After being forced to fall back to the AdMech research outpost, the Knights questioned why, if the Tech-priests had the firepower to drive off the daemons, why had they waited for the Space Marines to die in their defense? The magos Taghatma Arcanus replied that he simply hadn't noticed anything beyond his lab for the last six years, for he had been concentrating on a most fascinating debilitation in Space Marine gene-seed. Upon revealing that the Magos had been studying their very own gene-seed problem, the Knights requested and nearly demanded the cure. Magos Arcanus would give them the cure provided they destroy the corrupted Mechanicus personnel enthralled to the daemons on the other side of the planet, including his identical twin: Maghatma Arcanus. The Marines agreed and proceeded as fast as they could push their engines. The long-range cannons of Gwendolyn's Centurion devastators took a heavy toll on the corrupted kastellans standing guard, while Castidian Fellfall's reconstructed chassis, and Brellon Juche struck at the heart of the heretek's forces. These combined forces distracted and confused both the slow-witted Nurgle daemons and the corrupt servitors, allowing Sternguard and tactical squads to plant seismic charges that would blow the facility sky-high using its own reactors. Despite a last-ditch fusillade of heavy firepower from Maghatma Arcanus grievously wounding Brellon Juche, the Marines escaped as the facility detonated in a blast of atomic power, annhilating the daemons on the planet. Even as the Chapter Master succumbed to his wounds, Magos Taghatma Arcanus presented the marines with their salvation, an innoculation against progenoid contamination, allowing for the progenoid glands to correct and begin reproducing purely once again. Though it must have been their imaginations, many marines feel their organs flutter as the Magos injected each of them. But despite the scattered smiles and relief the Knights of Ajax felt at their deliverance, there was a sense of sorrow for their Chapter Master, who had led them through many trials, had died of his wounds. While there were many petitions for Manmute Aguare to lead them as captain of the First Company and the oldest serving marine, the inherent split between Aguare and Wolfenbach Utterich's faction as master of the Blade meant a compromise was called for. As a result Chaplain Klen, master of the Rites was declared the new Chapter Master until Aguare and Wolfenbach worked out their differences.

The Best Thing to Do in Every New Zealand National Park
01 of 14
New Zealand’s National Parks
Jake Norton / Aurora Photos
New Zealand is famed for its commitment to nature and for working hard to maintain its natural beauty. The country has a total of 13 national parks, each with its own unique natural attractions to explore and enjoy, from some of the planet's most impressive glaciers, to rare bird and marine life. Narrowing down each to a single reason to visit is difficult as they each have so much to offer, but here's a look at some of the most popular attractions in each of New Zealand's national parks — a highlight of any visit to the country itself.

Tongariro National Park

Tongariro was New Zealand’s first national park and is recognized as one of 27 World Heritage Sites. The park includes several sacred Maori sites and three active volcanoes. It is home to the world famous Ruapehu ski fields and a popular destination for locals and international visitors alike.
Heralded as the best one-day trek available in New Zealand, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is possibly the most well-known attraction in this national park. It has been listed among the top ten single-day treks in the world and would be reason enough to head to Tongariro. The 12-mile journey isn’t for the faint-hearted and it features steep climbs and unpredictable weather, however it is worth it for the scenery and experience in this beautiful part of the world.

Egmont National Park
Beerpixs/Getty Images
Located on the west coast of the North Island, Egmont National Park was named by Captain Cook after John Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont. The central feature of Egmont National Park is Mount Egmont. Its official Maori name is Taranaki, which means that the mountain has two names and are often used interchangeably.
Mount Taranaki is one of New Zealand’s many dormant volcanoes and the track to the summit is a popular hike for visitors. The summit climb is considered moderately difficult and a good test for hikers. It involves sections that require some climbing on all fours and a decent level of fitness, however once at the top, the views extend for many miles in every direction — out to the Tasman Sea to the west and Ruapehu to the east.

Whanganui National Park

Bordering the Whanganui River, Whanganui National Park is the protected habitat of many endangered native birds including several thousand North Island brown kiwi and blue ducks. There are many other bird species in the park, such as the grey warbler, New Zealand pigeon, silvereye, tomtit, tui and whitehead.
The park is also home to Operiki Pa — a set of ancient Maori ruins. This archaeological site is of huge historical significance for Maori and all New Zealanders, and have been a key piece of the puzzle when tracing the history of pre-colonial populations. It is a fascinating site for people interested in history, has well-preserved examples of earthwork defenses and is positioned on the brow of a cliff with picturesque scenery all around.

Abel Tasman National Park

Despite being the smallest national park, Abel Tasman is a popular tourist destination with tidal inlets and golden sand beaches along the Tasman Bay shores. Activities include tramping along its world-famous coastal track, which features granite cliffs and gorgeous scenery. Located at the top of the South Island, its small size belies the wealth of experiences available to intrepid travelers.
Tonga Island Marine reserve is one of the key attractions of the region, with over seven square miles dedicated to the preservation of unique and rare marine life. The reserve includes sandy beaches, boulder headlands, rocky reefs and small estuaries, as well as pods of dolphins, rafts of penguins and herds of seals. Kayaking tours are available for exploring the bays of Tonga Island and snorkeling is the ideal way to see all the life amongst the rock reefs.

Kahurangi National Park

Situated in the north-west of the South Island, right next to the Abel Tasman National Park, Kahurangi contains spectacular remote and wild countryside. New Zealand’s second largest national park, it features ancient landforms and unique flora and fauna, making it a key destination for visitors who want to see New Zealand’s raw beauty at its best.
The Heaphy Track is a 50-mile, four-day tramp that attracts visitors from all over the world every year. There are huts along the length of the track and many people choose to walk sections of it rather than its entire length. The walk is long but not difficult for moderately fit hikers, with the pristine mountain scenery and the roaring Tasman Sea providing remarkable vistas at every turn.

Nelson Lakes National Park

Nelson Lakes National Park, located at the top of the South Island, is home to two large lakes — Rotoiti and Rotoroa. These are surrounded by the rugged mountain landscape of the Nelson region, making it a unique contrast of forested shores, glaciers and snowy peaks high above.
Rainbow Ski Area is situated above the town of St. Arnaud on the northern shore of Lake Rotoiti and offers every type of terrain for skiers and snowboarders. It's suitable for skiers of every level, from children to the experienced, and offers fresh powdery snow and beautiful alpine scenery in every direction.

Paparoa National Park

On the West Coast of the South Island between Westport and Greymouth, Paparoa National Park is 120 square miles of lush native forests, delicate cave formations and limestone canyons. It is one of the country’s most ecologically diverse parks, with a range of local flora and fauna including kiwis and other native birds, as well as pods of Hector’s dolphins off the west coast.
The park includes the celebrated Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki — a very popular tourist destination. The Pancake Rocks area consists of heavily eroded limestone, with the sea bursting through the blowholes during high tides. The 'pancake'-layering of the limestone was created by immense pressure on the alternating layers of marine creatures and plant sediments. This is one of the South Island’s must-see attractions and a fascinating sight for geology enthusiasts.

Arthur’s Pass National Park

Arthur’s Pass National Park is a rugged and mountainous area that straddles the main divide of the Southern Alps. Named after the route through the alps, which in turn was named after Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson — one of the first English settlers in New Zealand and the chief surveyor responsible for finding a way through the Southern Alps.
Located in the heart of Arthur's Pass National Park, Devils Punchbowl Falls are some the most impressive in New Zealand and on the list of must-see waterfalls. Spectacular at a distance, it’s better still at their base where you can experience the sheer power. There is a 150 climb to and from the base of the falls, with viewing platforms and photo opportunities at several points along the way.

Another of the great alpine parks of the South Island, Westland Tai Poutini National Park extends from the highest peaks of the Southern Alps to the wild remote west coast. It features scenic lakes and dense rainforest, as well as remains of 1860’s gold mining towns.
Two of the biggest attractions in the park are the famous Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. Each features dramatic scenery including ice caves, crevices and formations, with heli-hike tours the most popular way to explore and experience these world-famous natural phenomena. Guided tours will allow you to see inside the caves and get as close as possible safely and are available throughout the year.

It is a hotspot for mountaineering, ski tourism and scenic flights, and the park is an area of outstanding natural beauty and a must-see for anyone who loves exploration.
A tribute to one of the world’s greatest explorers, the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre showcases the Aoraki Mount Cook region. It features interactive exhibits about the people in the region and its place in the universe. It includes a 3D theatre and planetarium, making it a great place to explore New Zealand’s mountaineering past, present and future.

UNESCO World Heritage-listed, Mt Aspiring National Park contains unique vegetation and wildlife, combining forest and foliage with alpine grandeur at every turn.
The park is also home to Dart River, the centerpiece of the Dart River Wilderness Safari. The highlights of this once in a lifetime six-hour tour include a jet boat ride, a guided nature walk and a back-country off-road tour. Surrounded by mountains and valleys, you’ll make your way down the glacier-fed river and end your adventure with a walk through an ancient forest, learning about the history of the original Maori inhabitants and the surrounding wildlife.

New Zealand’s largest national park and one of the biggest in the world, Fiordland National Park covers the entire southwest corner of the South Island. It is renowned for the grandeur of its scenery, with deep fiords, glacial lakes, mountains and waterfalls. It is a popular tourist destination for both New Zealanders and international visitors alike.
The jewel in the crown is undoubtedly the Milford Sound. Known for towering Mitre Peak, rainforests and waterfalls, the sound is home to a myriad of fauna including fur seal colonies, penguins and dolphins. There are many ways to explore Milford Sound, with the most popular being by boat or by helicopter. The area is criss-crossed with many walking and hiking tracks of differing difficulty and considered one of the highlights of any visit to New Zealand.

Rakiura National Park
Feargus Cooney/Getty Images
New Zealand is often erroneously considered to be two islands — the North and the South — when in fact it includes a third. Stewart Island is situated below the South Island and separated by the Foveaux Strait. Rakiura National Park covers approximately 85% of the island and is the newest of New Zealand’s parks.
Rakiura National Park’s isolation makes it a predator-free haven for many of New Zealand’s native birds and one of the best places to observe kiwis in the wild. Guided trips to Mason Bay provide visitors with the chance to watch kiwis eating sandhoppers at the beach and experience something that very few people ever will.
