horse oc time!!
this isn’t all my horses, but it’s a start so here’s some lore
the first one is Beetle. Beetle is Mercury’s Percheron stallion. He is very gentle and playful, and very competitive. He is a puller, roper, and Reiner. Mercury learned to ride on this horse. He belongs in my Whispers in the Dark transformers fairy tale au. Beetle is native to the aitravan tribe Isyan.
the second is Scout. Scout is a quarter horse mare Eron Eckert stole from his father’s neighbor after he fled a mine shaft he blew up. Eron took Scout with him from Virginia to Montana over the course of about ten years, where he ended up on the Dutton ranch. He and Scout fended off pests in the forest. She belongs to my Yellowstone au.
the third is Arris’s alt mode. Arris is a hybrid domestic/draft aether mech, the son of Tycho and Leilani and twin brother of Rigel. He is modeled after my boss’s horse Geronimo. Arris is trained in a type of Aitravan dressage, and some types of jumping. He is kind of hard to get along with. He also belongs to my WITD au.
the fourth is Brutus, a destructive, wild rodeo unicorn ridden only by the most insane Aitravan cowboys. He possesses no magical abilities, his horn is strictly offensive. Brutus and his wild relatives are impossible to train and exist for the sake of rodeo games. He also belongs to my WITD au.
the fifth is Gail, Scout’s quarter horse filly. Gail belongs to Eron’s daughter Maggie. Maggie and Gail barrel race in rodeos in south Texas. Gail belongs to my Yellowstone au, but long after Eron left the ranch and married Ruth Morgan, Maggie’s mother.
the sixth is Tycho’s alt mode, an ex-autobot rescue ship commander. He is the father of Rigel and Arris. Tycho is a draft aether mech, so he is very strong and resilient. He also belongs to my WITD au.
the seventh is Rio, the hearty and brave Pegasus mare belonging to the king of Aitrava, Sun Tracker. Rio is modeled after my boss’s horse Rio, who my brother loves very much. Rio is very fast and surefooted. She is loyal, and affectionate to her trainers. She also belongs to my WITD au

Open Studio Spotlight: Hite Institute Grows West in Portland
On the outside, right now, it is a decidedly non-descript building. There is evidence of renovation, but no signage yet. Come closer to the building at 1606 Rowan Street though…press your face against the new glass windows and you will discover that the interior is much further along. Freshly painted drywall and track lights are visible and some random art paraphernalia is finding its way to these rooms.
The University of Louisville Hite Art Institute’s Master of Fine Arts program is moving into the historic Portland neighborhood of Louisville a little early because this Saturday and Sunday is the annual Open Studio Weekend, and Curatorial Studies professor and Director of Galleries Chris Reitz has been determined to see this location included on this 5th year of touring artist’s studios. Open Studio Weekend is a co-production of Louisville Visual Art and the University of Louisville’s Hite Institute, a fundraiser for LVA’s Children’s Fine Art Classes and the Hite’s Mary Spencer Nay Scholarship.
The inclusion of the Hite MFA studios represents a dramatic expansion of Open Studio Weekend participants in the Portland neighborhood, which includes artists Victor Sweatt and Tara Remington in the LVA building at 1538 Lytle Street, just 2 blocks from Hite, John Brooks’ Quappi Projects space next door to LVA, Billie Bradford’s woodworking shop across Lytle Street from LVA, sculptor Bryan Holden on Main Street, and the Dolfinger Building on Montgomery Street, which will include painter Julia Davis and fiber artists Colleen and Maggie Clines.
Occupying a renovated warehouse constructed in the 1800s, the Fine Arts Department will offer studio space for MFA students and faculty focusing on ceramics, drawing, fiber, glass, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, book arts, and design. Faculty and MFA program artists who are listed as participants in the 2018 Open Studio Weekend are:
Mitch Eckert – Photography                         James Grubola - Drawing Scott Massey - Sculpture                              Tiffany Calvert – Painting Ying Kit Chan – Mixed Media                      Moonhe Baik - Fiber Barbara Hanger - Drawing                          Mary Carothers – Mixed Media Zed Saeed – Photography                            Megan Bickel - Painting Helen Payne – Drawing                                Reid Broadstreet – Mixed Media Che Rhodes - Glass                                       Rachid Tagoulla – Photography Monica Stewart – Mixed Media                   Lauren Bader - Sculpture Shae Goodlet - Drawing                                Katherine Watts - Printmaking Todd Burns – Ceramics                                KCJ Szwedzinski - Glass Tammy Burke – Mixed Media                     Meena Khalili – Mixed Media          Karen Weeks - Printmaking
The building will also provide space for the Anthropology department’s Master’s program, with gallery space and outreach programs planned for the Portland neighborhood. Construction will continue for some time, but classes in the building are scheduled to begin in January 2019.
Open Studio Weekend Directories are being sold at the following locations:

Being Present in Your Voice
Liz Eckert is a voice teacher at the Maggie Flanigan studio in New York. In this video, Liz discusses how actors can be fully present in their voice.
How Actors Can Be Fully Present In Their Voice
A preoccupation with “getting it right can cloud an actor’s ability to sense what is actually happening in the present moment. You’re not in your body, you’re in your head, which is spinning with a critical eye. When training is approached in this way, learning is framed around an imagined external measure of success, versus true internal growth, which looks different for each individual. That’s why I love working with Meisner trained actors, they are out of their heads and rooted in the present moment.
From time to time, after a vocal exercise in class, a student will ask, “How am I supposed to feel?” This question puzzles me because there is no way I as a teacher could possibly know how another human being is supposed to feel. When I teach a technique, it’s not to get a prescribed result; it’s to help the actor be fully present in their voice and alive in the moment. Presence is not a result; it’s a process. It comes from a relationship that the actor has with herself, her scene partners, and her audience. When an actor has a set picture of how she’s supposed to sound, or how a scene is supposed to go, then she takes herself out of those circumstances that support spontaneity and truth, and into a place of planning and fabrication.
youtube
Within the framework of technique, it’s up to the actor to chart her own progress. Who you are is your raw material as an actor; your voice, body, imagination, experience, memories, empathy, observational eye, and intellect. Full access to all of that is what the Maggie Flanigan Studio strives to develop. No human being can make that happen for any other human being; you have to take ownership of the technique and use it to strengthen your artistic backbone.
It’s important to distinguish the difference between being specific and being correct. For instance, some actors seek help in pronouncing things “properly.” The fact is, there is no gold standard of pronunciation in English, and the last thing an actor should want to hear from a fan is, “You pronounced everything properly.” What’s more important is to be understood, and to get intensely specific about how different sounds are made and how they can be used to craft a character, express feeling, create atmosphere, and affect their scene partner. These sounds serve a greater purpose; a mythical correct execution of them is not a useful purpose in and of itself.
It’s important to have a technique and acute awareness as an actor. But when it comes down to it, it’s about the people in the room. No one gets an Oscar for doing a tongue stretch correctly. But if in doing that exercise, you release a tension that has gripped your throat for decades, and if by releasing tension in your tongue and your throat, you are able to unleash a fullness in your voice that you have not experienced for as long as you can remember, and now you have complete access to this power of expression that you can put into your text, well, that’s something. That’s you being freed through the technique to be fully present in your work.

Voice and Speech Class for Actors West Philadelphia
Voice and Speech Class for Actors West Philadelphia includes four separate 24-class, 12-week semesters dedicated to the voice and speech development necessary for any serious actor. The training is based on the brilliant vocal training created by the world’s foremost voice teacher Kristin Linklater.
Voice and Speech Class West Philadelphia – Meisner Studio West Philadelphia
A resonant voice and clear speech are defining characteristics of a well-trained professional actor. The Maggie Flanigan Studio strives to produce actors with range and nuance. The human voice is an incredibly intimate and revealing part of our individuality. If the goal is to create fully realized human behavior, then developing the voice is a core requirement to serious professional actor training.
Voice and Speech Class for Actors West Philadelphia – Four Semesters
Voice and Speech Class West Philadelphia – Meisner Studio West Philadelphia
Voice I is the first of four 24-class, 12-week semesters dedicated to the voice and speech development necessary for any serious actor, and is based on the brilliant vocal training created by the world’s foremost voice teacher Kristin Linklater.
Work in this class follows the Linklater approach to voice, wherein the actor nurtures an ongoing curiosity about their vocal instrument, which is inseparable from the person behind it. The work begins with identifying and releasing physical tension that can inhibit a spontaneous connection to the voice. Through a physical release, the breath moves deeper into the body. When this happens, the voice follows, and with it a deeper personal connection.
youtube
Special attention in Voice I is paid to common areas of tension that can act as sensors to authentic communication: the tongue, the jaw, the soft palate, and the throat. This allows the student to isolate resonating chambers in the body, which strengthens the corresponding parts of the speaking voice. By the end of the course, students will have a full physical/vocal warm-up to use in preparation for rehearsals, auditions, and performance, invaluable for working actors who know how important it is to keep their instrument in excellent shape.
Voice 2 is the second of four 24-class, 12-week semesters dedicated to freeing the natural voice.
Using the freedom from habitual tension achieved in Voice I as a foundation, Voice II introduces increasingly extroverted and expensive demands on the voice. Always with an eye on maximum effect with minimal effort, students in this class tap into greater breath capacity and power, the fuel needed to access higher frequencies of energy in the voice without relying on the unnecessary muscular force that can lead to vocal strain. The entire two to three-octave speaking voice range is strengthened and liberated to respond to a range of impulses.

[caption id="attachment_8475" align="alignleft" width="800"] Voice and Speech Class West Philadelphia - Meisner Studio West Philadelphia[/caption] A resonant voice and clear speech are defining characteristics of a well-trained professional actor. The Maggie Flanigan Studio strives to produce actors with range and nuance. The human voice is an incredibly intimate and revealing part of our individuality. If the goal is to create fully realized human behavior, then developing the voice is a core requirement to serious professional actor training. Voice and Speech Class for Actors West Philadelphia - Four Semesters [caption id="attachment_8472" align="alignleft" width="800"] Voice and Speech Class West Philadelphia - Meisner Studio West Philadelphia[/caption] Voice I is the first of four 24-class, 12-week semesters dedicated to the voice and speech development necessary for any serious actor, and is based on the brilliant vocal training created by the world’s foremost voice teacher Kristin Linklater.
