While browsing for information on a particular Barbie, I was surprised to see Google recommend appending the word "controversy" to my search. The Barbie in question?

Breathe With Me Barbie. Breathe With Me Barbie is part of a range of self-care and wellness Barbies and depicts Barbie in a sukhasana pose, promising "5 guided meditations".

Unsure of where the controversy around this could be going, I clicked through. This seemed to be the root of it.

"Each pose is designed to invoke a Hindu deity in the spirit realm. I have seen children get possessed by demons. ... Satan is after the children. He wants to use them and indoctrinate them for his glory. Then, when he is done, he will destroy them. As your kids grow, they will get rebellious, depressed, and many will be suicidal. You won't understand what's happening as a parent. You must remove all toys and clean your children's room of all demonic attachments."

Various websites from Business Insider to The Christian Post to Newsweek cite Christian influencer (or, in the words of Business Insider, micro-influencer) Yasmeen Suri as being the origin of the claim that this doll is an agent of Satanism.

This would not be the first person to associate yoga with Satanism or possession - exorcist Gabriele Amorth also associated the practice of yoga with increased chance of demonic possession.

I can't find a screenshot of this, though, and all links back to the Facebook post are dead. What I did find though is a Patheos satire article dated shortly before the rest of these articles citing "Jasmine Blades" from Christians Against Eastern Religions as the source of the same quote.

Neither Christians Against Eastern Religions or Jasmine Blades are real, of course, hence their inclusion in a clearly marked satire piece. But I don't know where this leaves real Christian influencer Yasmeen Suri and her alleged (re)posting of the same quote picking up steam a week later. I don't know whether she saw the satire post and reposted the quote, to take it down later once she realised, or whether these articles quoting her as the source are misattributions. I'm leaning to the former, but I'm not actually sure.

There's a Truth or Fiction page debunking this, but what it is debunking is a) whether Breathe With Me Barbie depicts the practice of yoga (it depicts meditation, not yoga), b) whether this was a new doll in 2022 (it was not, it was released in 2020), c) whether yoga is synonymous with Hinduism and d) whether Catholicism or Christianity more generally prohibit or warn against the practice of yoga as a matter of doctrine.

For the record, by the way, there are Barbies that are explicitly depicted as practicing yoga, such as I Can Be... Yoga Teacher Barbie.

Or that appear to depict the practice of yoga on the box art, such as the Made to Move series.

Or dolls such as this Fitness Barbie who is depicted with various fitness equipment such as weights and a hula hoop, as well as a yoga mat.

As the last picture shows, I imagine she has an antagonistic relationship with my more traditional vampire OC, Amaryllis. While the "Devourer of Immortals" prefers the finest diet a vampire can have, Selina prefers "fast food" as a holdover from her love of In n Out Burger in her human life.

Yes, I gave her a name with SH as initials so she could wear Shadow High outfit pieces...the clothes are perfect for her style, but they REALLY spam the brand logo all over them...

Got the tennis player, she's a regular made to move, and ordered a Kristi Yamaguchi who's supposed to be the petite "pearl" or generally purple yoga top we've been needing.

I'm curious if the Clara Nutcracker I have is a petite or smaller. I have an old petite fashionista somewhere but have never managed to get the two of them together.

Is there a huge or noticeable difference between these two

It looks like there is going by these pictures but I've only ever had the purple dye pants one and her skintone is darker in person than it is in this pic.

Just wondering if one could be a suitable skintone substitution for the other.

I made all these dumb accessories to go with her outfit, but I regret bothering to do it. I made them before the doll arrived, and I didn’t know her dress had a neon pink on it! Somehow the neon says something else to me. I’d’ve picked a different set of things to make.

The yellow vest was basically an experiment to see if the shape works (it doesn’t) and also it covers the one shoulder of her dress, so a vest was a silly choice to begin with.

Or maybe I just don’t like her outfit that much?

Happy June 21st, it's Go Skateboarding Day!

A yearly event to promote skateboarding and to encourage the accessibility of skateboarding -- oh, heck. You're here to see the Barbies.

Barbie's younger sister Stacie, conceived as a more tomboyish and athletic member of the Roberts family, was skateboarding back in 1999 with Awesome Skateboard Barbie. Her friends Whitney and Janet could join her too.

But skateboarding isn't just for kids, is it? Barbie herself can get in on the sport.

That was true at least from 2001 onwards, with Coca Cola Skateboard Fun.

Actually there might be an earlier one -- I'm not 100% sure. This was the earliest one I could find for definite, but I feel like I must be wrong because surely there was an earlier one?

As the years go on, Barbie has been skateboarding more and more, including at the Tokyo Olympics.

Where she was a gold medalist.

And of course, one of the more popular skateboarding Barbies...

Okay, the Made to Move skateboarding Barbie is a little less popular because of the raw power of her skateboarding, and more because all made to move dolls are extremely popular among people who want to rebody other dolls onto these more dynamic bodies.

I guess October became OCtober for me, since here's another OC design!

I decided to try a contemporary take on a Vampire gal. She's still unnamed as she's technically a work in progress; details under the cut

Base doll: Made to Move Tennis Player Barbie

Face: completely repainted by me

Tattoos: transferred from a temporary tattoo sheet (yes, that works to give dolls tattoos!)

Clothes: pants are Shadow High, boots are from Looks 8, top sewn by me.

Unfortunately, she's still a work in progress because the nylon hair I rerooted her with STARTED STAINING EVERYTHING BLUE. Thus, I had to completely rip her hair out again, and she's awaiting a de-staining treatment before I try reinstalling different hair. I've bought the same deep blue in kanekalon and I'm hoping the difference in fiber and manufacturer means that the blue won't transfer to the head and body plastic. Here's hoping that faceup I did survives; working on the ultra-flat "balloon head" sculpt that Barbie keeps using these days is tough! I'm proud of how much dimension and expression I managed to get out of it with minimal paint.
