Author's Note #1

This story is loosely based on private roleplays between me and my girlfriend. 

A lot has happened in that RP, and it was started before Dominaria United had fully finished, so be aware that canon divergencies are abundant (and somewhat the focus, as our story is very much an AU that’s loosely based on canon). Note that this was written after Dominaria United’s release, so some things were edited to fit a little more closely for this story, but… it’s still hugely divergent from canon lol.

This story will have chapters based on individual planeswalkers that slowly piece together the entire story by explaining each character’s role in the story, part-by-part. 

Canon divergencies that are worth mentioning from the start/other notes worth mentioning from the start:

You’re going to see me blatantly ignore a lot of War of the Spark/Forsaken, whilst also acknowledging other parts of War of the Spark/Forsaken.

This is because as much as I love WotS as a concept, Forsaken was a horrific spit in the face of so many characters lol. 

Biggest example of this: Jace and Vraska *did* still separate in here, post-WotS, but it was because Vraska told Jace her target assigned by Niv was Liliana, and Jace was super uncomfortable with it. Vraska took this very poorly, and unlike in Forsaken, Vraska never told Jace that she exchanged targets, nor that her new target was Baan, nor that she was being blackmailed after cutting a deal with Dovin. Vraska took Jace’s discomfort with her target being Liliana to mean that Jace still cared for Liliana, and she started to believe that she and Jace would never have what Jace felt towards Liliana, especially given that it was revealed that Liliana never intentionally worked for Bolas. Jace took Vraska pulling away to simply mean she didn’t care for him as much anymore and started to believe that their closeness, leading up to and in WotS, had been borne of trauma, and believed she didn’t “need him” anymore now that the events of Ixalan were over. They separated due to a decaying relationship, so still rather similar to Forsaken, but not… whatever the hell Forsaken was doing with them.

Also… while I’ve read bits and pieces of WotS… I refuse to read it all. I am sorry. But you cannot make me read Forsaken. Also, in general, there is SO MUCH STORY to MtG, and while I’ve certainly read a lot—I LOVE the Innistrad stories!—I have not read everything. I am not an omniscient being with endless time. I am sorry :S Canon divergencies are going to be abound by me not having read everything, and I will simply say that they are intentional bc, well… they still are, I still have to consciously decide for things to be part of the story, even if they’re there because I didn’t read X story.

Another part of that—since Jace never knew Vraska exchanged targets, he never knew that Kaya was the one that targeted Liliana. He believes that Vraska killed Liliana post-WotS and that Kaya killed Dovin (Chandra was not present for the falsified death of Dovin in this version of events, it was someone else).

Everyone still believes Liliana is dead at the start of this also!

Jace never told anyone that Tamiyo was overcome by Emrakul, and that the latter sealed herself within Innistrad’s moon. Nor did he ever tell anyone that he assisted Ugin with imprisoning Nicol Bolas to the Meditation Plane; as far as the others knew, at least at the start, Bolas was killed during WotS (he wiped Saheeli’s memory of her role in it all, then his own memory of the fact Saheeli was involved).

Saheeli was not present during this story’s presentation of Dominaria United’s events, because at the time we started RPing it, the story was not complete, and I didn’t know she was going to play such a role yet. :shrug: Karn’s Sylex was destroyed, Teferi believed it lost, he assisted the New Coalition for a while post-Battle of the Mana Rig, but then returned to Ravnica to inform them of what had happened there as well as discuss what to do next about New Phyrexia. So begins this story.

{Would people be interested in participating in/seeing a Big RP Event?  The idea would be that several members of the RP community would set up a time to be online for a few hours for what is basically a one-shot quest.  I would DM and everyone else would use their fanwalkers and such.  Combat would be basically a modified version of Mental Magic.

1. What is your favorite trope to rp?

This is probably no surprise to anyone but I adore enemies to lovers to enemies and back again. Beauty meets Beast, but can't tame him. Mentoring the world. The whole works. The sinner is secretly the aint. All that goodness. Of course supernatural themes.

12. Do you prefer writing main or minor canon characters?

I prefer minor characters because there is room to grow them. Sorin here is a main but because he's pretty middle in MTG for the most part, there's not a whole lot of work to him by canon. Plus, I know how refreshing and exciting it can be to find a rare character floating about.

22. Are there any red roleplay flags for you that make you back off immediately?

Lordy help me because this has happened often: claiming my muse as solely the other mun's with the purpose of keeping a ship and only a ship. Oddly specific but it was this event that made me wary of others wanting to ship right off the bat. As well as a fellow not separating me as mun, from my muse. We're all people here tossing out our hcs, but I'm definitely not my muses.

I got 70 a few days ago, but only completed the 70 RDM quest today, due to the shoulder being a pain (literally), running an RP event (that took 3 different days to complete), and MtG pre-release events.

So I went and took a picture of Claire where I did so in 1.0 (need to find the images, they may have been lost in a hard drive crash though, I only seem to have a handful of them), and early on in 2.0; I figured it was fitting since she’s finally the class I wrote her to be (clear back when I first started playing her).

Her story has had her hiding the fact she was a RDM (which, she may or may not know that’s what they’re called, that is a bit dicy with the lore ATM), turning up as “just a swordswoman” using GLD/PLD for ages. But now...real RDM time.

I might have a few Dolly Parton songs downloaded on my phone. One of my ex-girlfriends was a big fan and some of Dolly’s stuff is pretty damn catchy so it stuck around even after the girlfriend left.

What is your favorite television show and why?

The Mandalorian!  I love Star Wars so a new series was always going to be a winner. I’m sure that The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is gonna knock it off the top spot as soon as it’s released though. Because hello, it’s Captain America.

Biography

Ryder transferred out of William McKinley High School at the start of his senior year. He’d had a rough few years there between grappling with his dyslexia, being catfished, being rejected by Marley more than once, finally feeling brave enough to share his past trauma only to be mocked for it, and the school shooting. The list just seemed to go on and on. He struggled with schoolwork as it was, but with everything else that was going on, his grades just continued to fall. Ryder’s parents wanted him to go to college so they’d pulled him out of McKinley, scraping together enough money to send him to a much nicer private school in a last ditch attempt to boost his grades enough for him to get into a decent college.

It didn’t work.

Ryder had just about passed his classes, but his grades were nowhere near getting him into a good school. He could sense the disappointment from his parents, even if they insisted that they didn’t care about it. He knew he’d let them down. With no career aspirations and no motivation to do anything, Ryder floundered for a while. He simply watched from his childhood bedroom as everyone else went off to college, moping about as he tried to think of his next step forward. He eventually decided to apply for a trainee mechanic job at his local garage, he liked cars and the job didn’t involve any mathematics or spelling so he quickly found he enjoyed it a lot more than any office job he could have had.

The job continued to go well and he soon passed his probation period and worked towards gaining his qualification whilst training on the job. He did that too, and became a fully qualified mechanic at the local repair shop. It’s where he still is now, all these years after high school. He puts a brave face on and pretends it doesn’t bother him, but he still harbours a lot of hard feelings towards the events of high school and his college failure. He’s trying hard to stay positive, and did manage to save enough to afford the rent on a small 1 bed apartment in downtown Lima so at least he doesn’t have to mope in his parents’ house anymore. It’s about the little wins, or so he tells himself.

{RP Event Script}

{Since the RP Event didn’t end up happening, I thought I would post what material I had prepared ahead of time.  I didn’t want to write too much ahead of time in case people got off track, but I’d hate for people to never see it.  Minis used with the kind permission of @pepperapb.  Note: as the event did not happen, none of this is canon to the timeline of the blog}.

Our story opens with all of you scattered across the multiverse, going about your normal business.  At the exact same moment, a Mini pops out of a pocket or coffee mug in front of each of you.  While Minis always bring comfort wherever they go, today they also exude an unmistakeable sense of urgency.  They begin pulling on you clothes and it become obvious they want you to follow them.  Surprisingly, as you do, you discover that you have started traveling in that extra direction that only planeswalkers can go.  The Minis lead you through the Blind Eternities to a plane many of you are familiar with; Kaladesh.  By allowing your Mini to pull you along, you find you are able to materialize precisely where she wants you to.  You appear in a dark corridor, the only light coming from a large room some twenty yards away.  As you arrive, you see the others also appear, each also lead by a Mini.

It is a strange sight to behold; your new companions consist of many different species from many different planes and some of them are frankly bizarre in appearance.  You cannot imagine why the minis would bring together such a mismatched group.  Those of you who know each other note each other’s presence, but before any real greetings can be exchanged (or fighting break out) the sense of urgency from the Minis redoubles and they continue to pull at your clothing, urging each of you to follow her.  Confused, you follow towards the lighted room.  

As you are able to see better, you note that the signs seem to indicate this is some kind of prison, though most areas you can see look like they have been abandoned.  Up ahead, you see what was obviously some kind of special solitary confinement cell.  This one won’t be holding anyone now though, as a large hole has been blasted into the side of it.

Through the hole, you see a strange scene.  A Mini sized set of explosives and what can only be the detonator button are on the ground.  Debris is scattered on the floor of the cell.  In the corner of the ceiling, a bee hive buzzes with activity.  An automatic food dispenser continues dropping an unidentifiable meat substance on the ground.  On the wall, the words “My work begins again” are written in what could charitably be called meat sauce.  Those of you who have visited the prisons of Kaladesh before (or followed the interplanar net) immediately recognize exactly where you are: Baral’s cell.  Of Baral himself, there is no sign.

Mini grabs you attention again and you are suddenly certain that these were their explosives, but Baral was gone when they got here.  You hear two sets of armored footsteps coming down the corridor and turn to look.  Two guards come in, panting as though they had been sprinting in their heavy armor.  When you look back, all traces of the Minis have vanished, including the explosives.

The first guard looks at your group in surprise, though for the moment not hostility.  She steps forward and asks “How did you get here so quickly, we’ve only just reported the breakout to the captain?”

The guards look at you in exasperation.  It’s clear that they don’t really know who you are or why you’re here, they just want you gone.

The second guard gives his partner a shrug and tell you “If you really want to help find Baral, why don’t you go talk to the chief?  I’m sure he can find some way to use you.”

You follow the guards’ directions to the guardhouse.  As you walk inside, you are bombarded by the flurry of activity that seems barely contained by the stone walls.  As you proceed inside, the hurried guards giving you a wide berth and not-so-subtle looks to your more unusual companions.  As you get to the reception desk the clerk, to her credit, recovers quickly from her surprise and asks in her most polite (but clearly confused) voice “Can I help you?”.

The receptionist is clearly both weary and wary, but eventually she shows you to the captain’s office.  Inside is the captain himself.  You can tell from his fancier armor and giant office.  It’s a good thing his office is so large, since all of you wouldn’t fit inside otherwise.  He gives the receptionist a confused glance, and your party several more.

“Visitors to see you, captain.” the receptionist tells him in the most professional voice she can muster.  “I think they’re here about the escape.”

“Yes yes, very good.  Please return to your desk.  I’ll… take care of our… guests.”

The receptionist leaves while the captain give your group another long look.  He takes a bottle of something that smells suspiciously like alcohol out of the bottom drawer of his desk and pours himself a small glass of the amber liquid.  He drains the glass, then looks to you and says “What can I help you with?  Make it quick, this is a very busy time for us.”

The captain looks at you, exasperated.  He was clearly unprepared for any of the answers you gave and frankly isn’t sure if he believes half of what you said.  But, after a moment he seems to come to a decision.

“Well, I don’t know about all that, but if you really do want to help catch that monster Baral, I’m not exactly in a position to turn down extra help right now.”

He pours himself another glass, stands up to pace around, and continues.

“Early this morning, we got word that Baral had escaped his cell some time during the night.  At first we thought he had managed to break out, but our investigators quickly discovered that someone on the outside had helped him.  It seems the guard that night, Ripu, was part of a secret group who are still loyal to Tezzeret’s regime called Tezzeret’s Claw.  They broke Baral out, presumably so that he can join them.  We still don’t know why they put a beehive in his cell before they went though.  Since then, we’ve had multiple reports of former Renegades going missing.  We tried to keep it quiet but word’s gotten out pretty fast.”

The captain drains the rest of his glass and looks at you with a surprisingly sharp eye.

“If you want to help, well we aren’t exactly in a position to turn you away.  If you find anything out about Tezzeret’s Claw, report back immediately and come directly to me.  We’re still not sure how many more guards are part of the Claw.”

He opens a drawer on his desk and pulls out a box full of small, metal badges.  He hands each of you a badge, then puts the rest back in his desk.

“Take these.  It’s an official deputy badge.  It’ll let other guards know you’re ok, and gives you the limited access to some of our equipment for the duration of the crisis.  Just don’t go getting any funny ideas.  When this is over you’ll have to return everything, including the badges.  Now, if you don’t mind, I’m pretty busy.”

{RP Event Rules}

{The RP Event will begin soon.  It will begin when I post the intro.  I’d like to lay down some rules beforehand so hopefully everything goes smoothly.  If anyone still wants to join in, you are welcome to.

1. The event takes place in the MtG Extended Tumblrverse.

2.  Combat will consist of player characters (PCs) playing Magic to defeat creatures that are considered on their opponent’s battlefield.  Normal rules of Magic apply with some exceptions.

3. There is no opponent player.  Players win when there are no opposing creatures left on the battlefield.  

4. Instead of casting a spell, players may spend their turn to attack, dealing 1 damage.  Equipment can be equipped to players, and effects will be reflected in their attack damage.

5.  Players need not construct decks.  They start with seven cards in hand and are expected to keep track of their own hand size.

6. Players may not cast the same spell more than once per encounter.  They may recast a spell if they find some way to put it back in their “hand”

7. This will use the Modern format, including the ban list.  This is to prevent players from effortlessly defeating every encounter.  Due to my unfamiliarity with the format, if you feel an exception should be made, PM me and I will decide.

8.  To keep the event moving forward, there will be a soft time limit after each time I post to react, decide how to proceed, etc.  This will be indicated in each post, as some will require more time than others.

9. Players are free to discuss what to do in replies.  Reblogs will be considered official responses.
