Published: September 13, 2022
NEW YORK — Ukraine’s former pound-for-pound king, the man known as “Loma,” is back. Vasiliy Lomachenko, a three-weight world champion, will make his triumphant New York City return in the 12-round main event Saturday, October 29, against undefeated contender Jamaine “The Technician” Ortiz at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. The 10-round featherweight co-feature sees two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist Robeisy “El Tren” Ramirez attempt to author a career-best win against former world champion Jessie Magdaleno. U.S. Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez Jr. (3-0, 3 KOs), who is coming off a 44-second knockout over Marco Antonio Canedo in August, looks to make it 4-0 in a six-round heavyweight special feature. Lomachenko-Ortiz, Ramirez-Magdaleno, and Torrez Jr. headline a card that will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+. Promoted by Top Rank, tickets starting at $56 go on sale Thursday, September 15 at 12 p.m. ET and will be available to purchase at Ticketmaster.com. Lomachenko was set to fight then-unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. earlier this year, but when Russia invaded Ukraine, he put his boxing career on hold to join a territorial defense battalion in his homeland. “Vasiliy Lomachenko is a credit to his country and the sport of boxing,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “When his country needed him, Vasiliy did not hesitate. We are thrilled that he is safe and fighting once again at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, his home away from home. Jamaine Ortiz is a young, hungry, undefeated fighter who understands that a victory over a living legend like Loma would be life-changing.” Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) has a résumé that is unmatched in modern boxing. A two-time Olympic gold medalist for Ukraine, he had a 396-1 amateur record, won a world title in his third pro fight, and became a three-weight world champion in his 12th bout. Lomachenko unified three of the four lightweight titles before a loss to Teofimo Lopez in October 2020 derailed his quest for undisputed supremacy. Last year, he came back with one-sided victories over Masayoshi Nakatani and Richard Commey. Lomachenko is 5-0 at Madison Square Garden Entertainment’s venues, including the win over Commey and his one-sided drubbing over fellow two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux. He arrived in Southern California last month to resume his career and work towards his goal of capturing the undisputed lightweight title, which is currently held by Devin “The Dream” Haney. Lomachenko said, “I love my sport, and I am so glad to be back. My goal is to win the undisputed lightweight title, but I will not take Jamaine Ortiz lightly. Madison Square Garden and Hulu Theater at MSG have been special places in my career, and I look forward to making more great memories on October 29. I want to dedicate this fight to all my Ukrainian people. I wear the flag proudly every time I step in the ring.” Ortiz (16-0-1, 8 KOs), from Worcester, Massachusetts, enters this bout hoping to stun another former world champion on the comeback trail. He last fought May 21 in Las Vegas, wearing down Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring down the stretch to earn a 10-round unanimous decision. Ortiz is a six-year pro who plied his trade on the New England club scene. Three months before the Herring triumph, Ortiz won the NABF lightweight strap with a clear decision win over Nahir Albright. Ortiz made his Top Rank on ESPN debut in April 2021 with an eight-draw against Joseph Adorno, surviving a pair of knockdowns in one of the year’s best action battles. Ortiz said, "I'm excited about this fight. Vasiliy Lomachenko is a great fighter, but I'm here to win. Once I win this fight, I'm targeting a world title opportunity. This is a dream come true." Ramirez (10-1, 6 KOs), from Cienfuegos, Cuba, starred at the 2012 London Olympics alongside Lomachenko. He won the first of his gold medals, while Lomachenko dominantly captured gold medal number two. Ramirez ruled the amateur ranks for another six years before defecting from Cuba. After a stunning loss in his 2019 professional debut against Adan Gonzales, Ramirez has been flawless during a 10-fight winning streak that has seen him avenge the Gonzales loss and crack the top 15 of all four major sanctioning organizations. He authored his most notable victory to date in June at Hulu Theater at MSG, knocking out the previously undefeated Abraham Nova with a left hand in the fifth round. That one-shot knockout propelled Ramirez into the title conversation, and he hopes to get that shot before long. But, first, a former world champion stands in his way. Ramirez said, “It is great to be back at the iconic Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. I am particularly excited to do so as co-main event of the evening that marks the return of the great Vasiliy Lomachenko, whom I admire and consider one of the greatest talents of all time. It’s rare to have two two-time Olympic gold medalists on the same card, and it is an honor for me. As far as Magdaleno is concerned, he represents an important challenge as he is an excellent boxer, a southpaw, and a former world champion.” Magdaleno (29-1, 18 KOs) ascended to the top of the junior featherweight division in November 2016 with his decision victory over Nonito Donaire. His title reign ended at the hands of Isaac Dogboe in April 2018, but he is 4-0 since losing to Dogboe and subsequently moving up to featherweight. He shook off an extended layoff in May to shut out Edy Valencia over eight rounds. A native of Las Vegas who has showcased his talents at many of the city’s most storied venues, Magdaleno will be making his New York City debut against a recently unstoppable train. Magdaleno said, “I am coming to shock the boxing world. I know what a victory would mean for my career. My goal is to become a two-time world champion, and Robeisy Ramirez is in my way. Just know that I am ready.” In addition to Torrez, three of his Olympic teammates from Tokyo will see action under the lights. Tiger Johnson (5-0, 4 KOs) makes his New York City debut in a six-round junior welterweight bout, featherweight silver medalist Duke Ragan (7-0, 1 KO) steps up in his first scheduled eight-rounder, and Troy Isley (7-0, 4 KOs) tests the junior middleweight waters in an eight-rounder. Cleveland-born lightweight sensation Abdullah Mason (4-0, 3 KOs) will fight in his first six-rounder, while junior lightweight Haven Brady Jr. (7-0, 4 KOs) makes his division debut in an eight-rounder.

From IPOs to trading cards, market euphoria is everywhere

From IPOs to trading cards, market euphoria is everywhere
What’s happening: The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite finished Thursday at new record highs. Bitcoin prices hit an all-time high of $48,975, while more tech founders and athletes are looking to raise hundreds of millions of dollars via special-purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs.
More traditional fundraising methods also continue to generate huge interest from investors looking for places to park their money. Dating app Bumble, which started trading on Thursday, priced shares at $43 apiece, above its expected range. Its stock surged immediately upon opening and closed at $70.31, a 64% increase.
In a piece just published, I report on how Wall Street, flush with cash, is piling into an even more obscure corner of markets: sports trading cards.
Industry insiders told me that the price of popular cards is soaring as sophisticated investors as well as small traders transform the world of sports collectibles from a fusty hobby into a major investment market.
One example: Earlier this month, a Michael Jordan rookie basketball card in pristine condition sold for a record $738,000 at an auction. It went for nearly $215,000 just weeks before.
“There’s never been a time like this in the history of the business,” Ken Goldin, whose company ran the auction, told Appradab Business. “I would bet that for every person who wanted a Michael Jordan rookie card in 2019, there’s 100 [now].”
Professionals like Goldin — who’s fielding calls from interested hedge funds — acknowledge that factors such as rock-bottom interest rates, which have encouraged investors to hunt for returns in creative places, are benefiting their business. But they think the enthusiasm will hold.
“This is now part of our culture,” Goldin said. “I wouldn’t go anywhere near the word bubble.”
Watch this space: It’s not just big money getting into the game. Fractional trading has also reshaped the trading card industry, allowing everyday buyers to purchase a small stake in a LeBron James or Patrick Mahomes card that would have otherwise been too costly.
“We realized the potential fractional ownership could have to break down a massive barrier to entry,” said Ezra Levine, the CEO of Collectable, which buys sports cards and converts them into tradable assets registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Other hobbyists are gathering on social media as they rip open new packs of cards, hoping they’ll contain younger talent that can later be sold for a huge profit on eBay. Some are making even bigger bets and bragging about their gains on TikTok. Read the full story here.
Disney is still getting hammered by the pandemic
The pandemic continues to slam Disney’s theme parks and movie business. But its streaming service, Disney+, is shining.
The latest: Disney’s revenue came in at $16.2 billion during its most recent quarter, down 22% compared to the previous year, the company said Thursday. Yet Disney+ is growing, and Wall Street is still loving it.
The streaming service now has nearly 95 million subscribers, up from the 86 million it had in December. The news sent shares up 1% in premarket trading. They closed Thursday at a record high, despite the massive hit from Covid-19.
Disney (DIS) is banking that huge investments in content like its Marvel “WandaVision” series will pay off in an increasingly crowded space, as it faces off against competitors including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Appradab parent WarnerMedia’s HBO Max.
Still, CEO Bob Chapek made clear on a call with analysts that Disney doesn’t plan to abandon movie theaters altogether, my Appradab Business colleague Frank Pallotta reports.
The company faces questions about what it will do with “Black Widow,” its latest Marvel film due to open in theaters on May 7. Could Disney put a film from the biggest blockbuster brand in the industry on Disney+, as it did with “Mulan” last year?
Doesn’t look like it. At least, not yet, per Chapek.
“We are still intending it to be a theatrical release,” he said Thursday.
Bumble’s IPO is a milestone for female founders
Bumble’s Wall Street debut isn’t just a win for its investors. It’s also a milestone for female founders.
See here: At 31, Bumble chief Whitney Wolfe Herd has become one of the youngest female CEOs in tech to take her company public, my Appradab Business colleague Sara Ashley O’Brien reports.
“You don’t have to be one type of person to find success in the business world or in the tech industry,” Wolfe Herd told Appradab Business in an interview Thursday. “I’ve truly just always tried to build what I wish existed, what I wish could help make lives better for the women I care about and the people I love, and I think it doesn’t always have to follow the same path.”
Wolfe Herd, who is based in Austin, Texas, started her career at another dating service, Tinder. She initially set out to create a women-focused social network before landing on the concept of a female-focused dating app. Bumble requires women searching for heterosexual matches to make the first move, a feature meant to boost women’s empowerment.
Sarah Kunst, managing director of early-stage venture capital firm Cleo Capital and a former senior adviser to Bumble, told Appradab Business that Wolfe Herd’s IPO sets a meaningful example to other founders who don’t fit the mold of what a “tech entrepreneur” typically looks like.
Wolfe Herd’s success story bucks the notion that “you can only start a company credibly if you have multiple prestigious degrees [and] all the right experience,” Kunst said. “She played this game on her own terms.”

Datacenter RPCs can be general and fast
Datacenter RPCs can be general and fast Kalia et al., NSDI’19
We’ve seen a lot of exciting work exploiting combinations of RDMA, FPGAs, and programmable network switches in the quest for high performance distributed systems. I’m as guilty as anyone for getting excited about all of that. The wonderful thing about today’s paper, for which Kalia et al. won a best paper award at NSDI this year, is that it shows in many cases we don’t actually need to take on that extra complexity. Or to put it another way, it seriously raises the bar for when we should.
eRPC (efficient RPC) is a new general-purpose remote procedure call (RPC) library that offers performance comparable to specialized systems, while running on commodity CPUs in traditional datacenter networks based on either lossy Ethernet or lossless fabrics… We port a production grade implementation of Raft state machine replication to eRPC without modifying the core Raft source code. We achieve 5.5 µs of replication latency on lossy Ethernet, which is faster than or comparable to specialized replication systems that use programmable switches, FPGAs, or RDMA.
eRPC just needs good old UDP. Lossy Ethernet is just fine (no need for fancy lossness networks), and it doesn’t need Priority Flow Control (PFC). The received wisdom is that you can either have general-purpose networking that works everywhere and is non-intrusive to applications but has capped performance, or you have to drop down to low-level interfaces and do a lot of your own heavy lifting to obtain really high performance.
The goal of our work is to answer the question: can a general-purpose RPC library provide performance comparable to specialized systems?
Astonishingly, Yes.
From the evaluation using two lossy Ethernet cluster (designed to mimic the setups used in Microsoft and Facebook datacenters):
2.3µs median RPC latency
up to 10 million RPCs / second on a single core
large message transfer at up to 75Gbps on a single core
peak performance maintained even with 20,000 connections per node (2 million cluster wide)
eRPC’s median latency on CX5 is only 2.3µs, showing that latency with commodity Ethernet NICs and software networking is much lower than the widely-believed value of 10-100µs.
(CURP over eRPC in a modern datacenter would be a pretty spectacular combination!).
So the question that immediately comes to mind is how? As in, “what magic is this?”.
The secret to high-performance general-purpose RPCs
… is a carefully considered design that optimises for the common case and also avoids triggering packet loss due to switch buffer overflows for common traffic patterns.
That’s it? Yep. You won’t find any super low-level fancy new exotic algorithm here. Your periodic reminder that thoughtful design is a high leverage activity! You will of course find something pretty special in the way all the pieces come together.
So what assumptions go into the ‘common case?’
Small messages
Short duration RPC handlers
Congestion-free networks
Which is not to say that eRPC can’t handle larger messages, long-running handlers, and congested networks. It just doesn’t pay a contingency overhead price when they are absent.
Optimisations for the common case (which we’ll look at next) boost performance by up to 66% in total. On this base eRPC also enables zero-copy transmissions and a design that scales while retaining a constant NIC memory footprint.
The core model is as follows. RPCs are asynchronous and execute at most once. Servers register request handler functions with unique request types, and clients include the request types when issuing requests. Clients receive a continuation callback on RPC completion. Messages are stored in opaque DMA-capable buffers provided by eRPC, called msg-bufs. Each RPC endpoint (one per end user thread) has an RX and TX queue for packet I/O, an event loop, and several sessions.
The long and short of it
When request handlers are run directly in dispatch threads you can avoid expensive inter-thread communication (adding up to 400ns of request latency). That’s fine when request handlers are short in duration, but long handlers block other dispatch handling increasing tail latency, and prevent rapid congestion feedback.
eRPC supports running handlers in dispatch threads for short duration request types (up to a few hundred nanoseconds), and worker threads for longer running requests. Which mode to use is specified when the request handler is registered. This is the only additional user input needed in eRPC.
Scalable connection state
eRPC’s choice to use packet I/O over RDMA avoids the circular buffer scalability bottleneck in RDMA (see §4.1.1). By taking advantage of multi-packet RX-queue (RQ) descriptors in modern NICs, eRPC can use constant space in the NIC instead of a footprint that grows with the number of connected sessions (see Appendix A).
Furthermore, eRPC replaces NIC-managed connection state with CPU-managed connection state.
This is an explicit design choice, based upon fundamental differences between the CPU and NIC architectures. NICs and CPUs will both cache recently used connection state. CPU cache misses are served from DRAM, whereas NIC cache misses are served from the CPU’s memory subsystem over the slow PCIe bus. The CPU’s miss penalty is therefore much lower. Second, CPUs have substantially larger caches than the ~2MB available on a modern NIC, so the cache miss frequency is also lower.
Zero-copy transmission
Zero-copy packet I/O in eRPC provides performance comparable to lower level interfaces such as RDMA and DPDK. The msgbuf layout ensures that the data region is contiguous (so that applications can use it as an opaque buffer) even when the buffer contains data for multiple packets. The first packet’s data and header are also contiguous so that the NIC can fetch small messages with one DMA read. Headers for remaining packets are at the end, to allow for the contiguous data region in the middle.
eRPC must ensure that it doesn’t mess with msgbufs after ownership is returned to the application, which is fundamentally addressed by making sure it retains no reference to the buffer. Retransmissions can interfere with such a scheme though. eRPC chooses to use “unsignaled” packet transmission optimising for the common case of no retransmission. The trade-off is a more expensive process when retransmission does occur:
We flush the TX DMA queue after queuing a retransmitted packet, which blocks until all queued packets are DMA-ed. This ensures the required invariant: when a response is processed, there are no references to the request in the DMA queue.
eRPC provides zero copy reception for workloads under the common-case of single packet requests and dispatch mode request handlers too, which boosts eRPCs message rate by up to 16%.
Sessions and flow control
Sessions support concurrent requests (8 by default) that can complete out-of-order with respect to each other. Sessions use an array of slots to track RCP metadata for outstanding requests, and slots have an MTU-size preallocated msgbuf for use by request handlers that issue short responses. Session credits are used to implement packet-level flow control. Session credits also support end-to-end flow control to reduce switch queuing. Each session is given BDP/MTU credits, which ensures that each session can achieve line rate.
Client-driven wire protocol
We designed a wire protocol for eRPC that is optimized for small RPCs and accounts for per-session credit limits. For simplicity, we chose a simple client-driven protocol, meaning that each packet sent by the server is in response to a client packet.
Client-driven protocols have fewer moving parts, with only the client needing to maintain wire protocol state. Rate limiting becomes solely a client responsibility too, freeing server CPU.
Single-packet RPCs (request and response require only a single packet) use the fewest packets possible. With multi-packet responses and a client-driven protocol the server can’t immediately send response packets after the first one, so the client sends a request-for-response (RFR) packet. In practice this added latency turned out to be less than 20% for responses with four or more packets.
Congestion control
eRPC can use either Timely or DCQCN for congestion control. The evaluation uses Timely as the cluster hardware could not support DCQCN. Three optimisation brought the overhead of congestion control down from around 20% to 9%:
Bypassing Timely altogether is the RTT of a received packet on an uncongested session is less than a low threshold value.
Bypassing the rate limiter for uncongested sessions
Sampling timers once per RX or TX batch rather than once per packet for RTT measurement
These optimisation works because datacenter networks are typically uncongested. E.g. at one-minute timescales 99% of all Facebook datacenter links are uncongested, and for web and cache traffic Google, 90% of ToR switch links (the most congested), are less than 10% utilized at 25 µs timescales.
Packet loss
eRPC keeps things simple by treating re-ordered packets as losses and dropping them (as do current RDMA NICs). When a client suspects a lost packet it rolls back the request’s wire protocol state using a ‘go-back-N’ mechanism. It reclaims credits and retransmits from the rollback point.
Evaluation highlights
This write-up is in danger of getting too long again, so I’ll keep this very brief. The following table shows the contribution of the various optimisations through ablation:
We conclude that optimizing for the common case is both necessary and sufficient for high-performance RPCs.
Here you can see latency with increasing threads. eRPC achieves high message rate, bandwidth, and scalability with low latency in a large cluster with lossy Ethernet.
For large RPCs, eRPC can achieve up to 75 Gbps with one core.
Section 7 discusses the integration of eRPC in an existing Raft library, and in the Masstree key-value store. From the Raft section the authors conclude: “the main takeaway is that microsecond-scale consistent replication is achievable in commodity Ethernet datacenters with a general-purpose networking library.”
eRPC’s speed comes from prioritizing common-case performance, carefully combining a wide range of old and new optimizations, and the observation that switch buffer capacity far exceeds datacenter BDP. eRPC delivers performance that was until now believed possible only with lossless RDMA fabrics or specialized network hardware. It allows unmodified applications to perform close to the hardware limits.

Vagaries, vicissitudes and voices initially in the form of primal groans and grunts began to weave the rudiments of traditions, which in no short time seem to thrive on sacrifice, superstition and many aspects of the kill.
At some juncture, one branch from the tree of homo sapiens would practically subsume the entire trunk line, thus render the once almighty, beastie boy, crafty duty enemy fly guy humbled.
Thus, the varietal genes and chromosomes encapsulating latent internecine torture and extermination bred dreadful heathen jimmied, linkedin, nasty pirated reprehensible totemic vicars xing zone.
Eons would elapse with negligible yet faintly perceptible notches of sophistication. Ever more egregious methodologies would be dreamt up, employed in peevish mock war games
Only to be inflicted on innocent civilians or military personnel as collateral trophies in the name of mortal combat.

Thunder vs. Knicks 2017 live stream: Time, TV schedule, and how to watch Carmelo Anthony's return to MSG online
Anthony's nearly seven-year stint in New York ended with a trade in September. Now, he will return to MSG with Russell Westbrook and Paul George at his side.
Carmelo Anthony's much anticipated return to Madison Square Garden is finally here. The New York Knicks traded Anthony in September to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Doug McDermott, Enes Kanter, and a 2018 second-round pick via the Bulls. Now Anthony will return with Paul George and Russell Westbrook by his side to go head-to-head against the Knicks on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET. NBA TV (live stream via fuboTV) will broadcast the action.
Oklahoma City (14-14) has been inconsistent this season. Indeed, the Thunder have three superstars, which gives them the edge over most teams in the NBA. But Westbrook, Anthony, and George are still learning how to coexist on the court. The good news is that all three players are averaging more than 17 points per game.
The Knicks (15-13), on the other hand, have been better than expected. Players like Kristaps Porzingis, Enes Kanter, and Frank Ntilikina have all managed to play well as a cohesive unit. New York isn't necessarily a playoff team, but it's encouraging to see such a young team exceed expectations early.
Still, the Knicks will have a hard time beating this new-look Thunder team. Even though the Thunder are struggling a bit this season, they can still go on offensive barrages quickly. New York will have to force the Thunder to attempt bad shots to try to disrupt their rhythm.

Thunder vs. Knicks news:
Paul George’s return to Indiana was full of moments, both on and off the court
Paul George made a bittersweet return to Indiana as a Pacers opponent on Wednesday night. In his first game back after forcing a trade to Oklahoma City in the offseason, the Thunder narrowly squeezed out a five-point victory.
George’s visit was full of memorable moments — both off the floor and on — showing his complicated relationship with the fans he spent seven seasons playing in front of.
After forcing the Pacers to trade him or risk losing him for nothing, George was back in Indiana. The Oklahoma City Thunder narrowly squeezed out a five-point victory in George’s first game back, but the emotional trip was full of moments — both off the floor and on.
When the Thunder arrived in Indiana for shootaround, George was expecting to be booed:
Four problems the Thunder still need to solve
Westbrook’s most endearing quality is his unflinching refusal to ever back down. You cannot intimidate him with physical defense, or spook him with cheap tactics.
But there’s a problem: Sheer determination sometimes isn’t enough in basketball. Westbrook hasn’t ever been deterred by the way he wants to play, even when that’s being used against him.
This does not mean Westbrook is a problem for the Thunder — they remain better with him on the court than any other rotation player but Andre Roberson. But Westbrook’s stubbornness on the court can certainly hurt the Thunder, too, even as his dynamism keeps them afloat.
Westbrook’s efficiency is a problem. Even as he averages 23 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 9.1 assists per game, he’s shooting under 40 percent from the field. He’s also shooting career lows on two-pointers outside of 10 feet. Small adjustments could yield better results.
Locked on Knicks, Episode 224: Offensive and defensive schemes
On today’s ‘sode I’m joined by P&T maestro Zach DiLuzio to talk about what the Knicks are doing, SCHEMATICALLY, on offense and defense. We discuss what we like, what we don’t like, and what we think the Knicks should do more of.
ALSO DISCUSSED: what the starting lineup should be while Timmy is out, Michael Beasley’s polarizing play, Black Star and MORE!
Listen!
Thunder vs. Knicks prediction:
You have to like what you see from the Knicks. This young team is on the rise, but the Thunder will overwhelm them in this game.

New York Islanders (16-9-3, 35 points) 3

For a moment it seemed the Islanders were destined for a little more. Relentless pressure applied late in the third period brought them to overtime, but a missed clear on the puck after a scramble in front cut it short and earned the Isles a point.
Despite losing back-to-back games for the first time this season, Doug Weight‘s club can take a gritty, well-earned point out of an otherwise lost contest.
The special teams absolutely buried the Isles, 0-for-4 on the power play and 0-for-2 on the penalty kill. If you want a primary reason to blame the loss, look no further.
Recap
The game started off with the ice deeply slanted in Pittsburgh’s favor, the Isles were outshot by more than a 2-to-1 margin in the first period and were fortunate to be down just 1-0.
The Islanders tallied the lone goal in the second courtesy of Jordan Eberle. It was his 12th of the season with assists to Nick Leddy and Mathew Barzal.

But things would fall apart for the Islanders in the third period. They allowed their second powerplay goal of the game, and then Jaroslav Halak played the puck 2015-style and gave it straight away for a 3-1 Penguins lead.

The score would last well into the third until Barzal dazzled fans everywhere with yet another display of Calder Trophy-worthy finesse.

Brock Nelson is finally starting to heat up, and with Halak on the bench, he scored his second goal in three games to tie the game at three.
The Isles were flying.

The end result makes it even more painful to see the fourth goal that never was from Anders Lee.

The Isles traded chances with the Penguins in overtime, but it was former New York Ranger Matt Hunwick’s third of the season that buried the Isles comeback attempt.

— IslesBlog (@IslesBlog) December 8, 2017
Josh Ho-Sang couldn’t wrestle him away from the puck, and as they battled for possession, the puck slid past Jaro.
While their third-period comeback was a true test of character, they simply lacked a lot of spark through the majority of the game and their special teams absolutely buried them on top of that.
They return to action in Boston tomorrow night on MSG+ 2 at 7 p.m. ET.

Comparing and Contrasting Countries
Comparing and Contrasting Countries
1. Development Status & Evolution: Compare and Contrast between Vietnam and Thailand
a. The Core/Periphery Status of Vietnam on a Worldwide Scale
Vietnam, ranked as 131st in the Global ranking (“Heritage Foundation, 2016) had been regarded as one of the countries in the world that had made a significant progress within the past two decades and it is progressively integrated into the world economy. (“Global Affairs Canada, 2015”) The poverty rate in Vietnam had significantly reduced at an unprecedented rate. However, Vietnam economic growth has slowed in recent year, meanwhile, its GDP continually grew in 2013, by 5.2 percent, regardless of the weaknesses in the global economy. (“Global Affairs Canada, 2015”) Additionally, Vietnam has been able to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in order to eradicate the extreme hunger and poverty and also to improve maternal health. Furthermore, Vietnam had been ranked 127 out of the 187 countries on its 2012 Human Development Index by the United Nations Development Program. Moreover, Vietnam was officially declared as a country of focus for the Government of Canada’s international development efforts. (“Global Affairs Canada, 2015”)
Internal Core/Periphery Spatial Patterns within Vietnam
Vietnam is one of the earliest agricultural centers that specialize in practicing wet rice farming, in which stone and metallurgical revolutions took place. (“Consulate General of Vietnam in Houston”) Corruption and graft ruin all levels of the government and the judiciary system of Vietnam. Within the Communist Party, there exist different forms of bureaucratic rivalries, vast corruption, nepotism, and most especially in its major core areas, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City In this regard, many of the state companies operate with a small amount of transparency. (“Heritage Foundation, 2016”) The entire business regulatory framework in the country lacks efficiency. It takes more time to start up a business in Vietnam, the public sector dominates the market and there seem to be a maintained price control and high subsidies for agricultural commodities. (“Heritage Foundation, 2016”)
The Core/Periphery Status of Thailand on a Worldwide Scale
Thailand on the other hand, became an upper-middle income economy in 2011, and has tried to make remarkable progress in economic and social challenges, migrating from a low-income country to an upper-income country. (“Worldbank, 2015”) Thailand’s economic growth is gradually developing; its economy had expanded by 0.9 percent in 2014, and still expected to improve slightly 2015-2017. Moreover, Thailand has the tendency to meet most of the Millennium Development Goals (MSGs) based on aggregate. Amidst Thailand’s successes, they have experienced serious crisis. However, the country’s economic and political leaders still wonders how the country is entering the ranks of the New Industrial State (NIS) Asia. (Setiawan, 2011)
Internal Core/Periphery Spatial Patterns within Thailand
Thailand is lingering to grow the economy for its citizens due to the moderation in the economic growth, thus making it suffers shortage of skilled labor and experienced workers in the modern economy, this leaving uncertainty for the public and private investment, especially in its core area, Bangkok. (“Worldbank, 2015”) Poverty had declined reasonably over the past 30 years from 67% in 1986 to 11% in 2014, with incomes increasing. With Thailand’s Universal Health Coverage Scheme in 2001, they’ve been able to provide access to affordable health care for all citizens. Also agricultural development had substantially progressed in Thailand, which is one of the major reasons for the fall of rural poverty in the country, with the reduction of hunger and child malnutrition. (“Overseas Development Institution, 2010)
b. The Relationships between Internal Core/Periphery Areas, Historical Urbanization Patterns and Current Spatial Distribution of Urban Areas within Vietnam
The internal core areas in Vietnam include Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. It had been accounted that most of the core areas of Vietnam have the paddy fields, most of the wealth and people, with many more industry, economy, cultural activity, and political operations. (Jamieson, 1993) According to Wendell Cox, (2012) Vietnam has the tendency to be the next China in relation to the rise and liberation its markets is undergoing. Basically, urbanization pattern evolved in the core areas. The political power in Vietnam lies in the core area too, Hanoi, while the economic heart of Vietnam is the second core area, Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon. This city is the largest urban area in Vietnam. (Cox, 2012)
The Relationships between Internal Core/Periphery Areas, Historical Urbanization Patterns and Current Spatial Distribution of Urban Areas within Thailand
The internal core area of Thailand is its capital, Bangkok, which is also the largest in the country, which has all the most beautiful attractions of the country too. Bangkok had experienced high population growth since 1980 till date. The urbanization pattern of Bangkok, Thailand also experienced growth in the suburban (and even exurban) areas, having an expanding population of about 1.9 million between 2000 and 2010. The expansion is based on the periphery both within the city and in the provinces of Samut Prakon in Bangkok. This had led to a substantial spatial distribution of the urban areas within the city. (Cox, 2012)
c. The Relationship between the Locations of Internal Core Areas and the Location of Different Types of Natural Resources within Vietnam
The large availability of land in the core areas had provided a better settlement for the large population of the country which then makes it easier for them to explore the land resources for rice growing, and other agricultural production, with their gathered water resources from the Red River in core area, their mineral resources, such as oil and gas reserves in the core areas and many other parts of the country. (“The Business Times, 2010”)
The Relationship between the Locations of Internal Core Areas and the Location of Different Types of Natural Resources within Thailand
Thailand is rich in different types of natural resources and their sources are located at different locations. The core area, Bangkok takes the majority population of the entire city and therefore, most of the processing of these natural resources is carried out in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces. And considering the fact that Bangkon is the seat of the government of the political system of the country, most of the funding and other processing of the natural resources are sourced from there.
d. The Effect of the Current Government Type and Specific Government Policies
Vietnam’s current government type is “Communist State” while Thailand’s current government type is based on “Constitutional Monarchy.” (“Indexmundi”) Furthermore, the specific government policies on the Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are based on urban renewal efforts, and how the urban governments can be empowered to support the development in the country. (Canh et al, 2013) The specific government policies on Thailand’s core area, Bangkok is based on implementing policies based on their transportation services, roads and highways, waste management system, urban planning, housing, environment, and security services. (Sankam, 2015)
e. The Forecast for Future Trends
Vietnam future trends are based on the country’s inadequate physical infrastructure and more also, its powerful state bureaucracy which makes doing any kind of business in Vietnam quite difficult and complex. In addition, its Confucian traditions had made it committed to education and human resource development, Vietnam also shares some characteristics with Japan and may tend to follow after it. Vietnam is excellent with tourism, and also benefits from the substantial and increasing international remittances that come from overseas, and finally, the 2001 approval of the U.S. Congress based on trade agreement will help Vietnam greatly with improved export access to the United States market. (“Nationsencyclopedia”)
On the other hand, Thailand’s future trends see more increase in the population in Thailand of about 4.9% by 2030. Also, the Thailand envisions an excellent place in global population trends, with analysis of changing the population structures, the age makeup of the consumer market, the diversity in the population of Thailand. (“Euromonitor, 2013”)
Conclusively, it is apparent from this analysis that Vietnam has a stronger economy than Thailand. The Vietnam government seems to take the core areas seriously and tries to improve faster than the Thailand government. Additionally, Vietnam is expected to experience more successes in the future than Thailand.
  2. Diversity & National Unity: Compare and Contrast China and Vietnam
Diversity is a broad term that is used with respect to explaining the different internal factors that make up the cultural background of a country, while National Unity is a term used to brings everyone within a particular country together. Therefore, this section compares and contrasts what makes up the diversity and national unity between China and Vietnam.
a. The Diversities of the Population in China
China is a large united multi-national state, and it is composed of about 56 ethnic groups. Meanwhile, Han Chinese has about 91.59% of the entire Chinese population and the remaining 55 make up the remaining 8.41%. (“Travel China Guide”) The culture of China is called Chinese, and their alternative names are Zhonghua Renmmin Ggheguo. China has the highest population of the world and their official language is Mandari, otherwise, known as Putonghua, based on the Beijing dialect. The modern spoken Chinese is now called bai hua, and their writing system had not changed. Since China is a communist state, the religious belief of the country is based on atheism. (“Every Culture, 2011”)
The Diversities of the Population in Vietnam
Vietnam, on the other hand is filled with a variety of people from various cultural backgrounds. It is regarded as the second largest country in Southeast Asia, (“Nationsencyclopedia”) with Indonesia being the first, and its population had grown close to 90 million, with 54 different ethnic groups, each of which has their own language. And they differ in their own belief, customs, tradition, and more. (Lilly, 2015) Vietnam does not have any territories or colonies. Vietnam is influenced heavily from the Chinese language. Though, the official language is Vietnamese, spoken by a majority of the citizens. (“Spain Exchange”)
b. Relationships between the Physical Shape and Size of each Country and the Spatial Distribution
Vietnam is bordered on the north by China, with the east to South China sea, called Eastern Sea (by Vietnamese) Vietnam’s shape and size is about 329,569 square kilometers. Meanwhile, China is bordered in the east by majorly the East China Sea, South China sea, the yellow sea, Korea bay, Taiwan strait, and Bohai sea.
c. The Tensions between the Different Population Groups
There are ethnic tensions within China is quite complex and it arises from the influences of the Chinese history. Mot especially between the Tibetans and Uighurs, there had several episodes of severe inter-ethnic communal violence, which had ranged from the Lhasa riot that occurred in 2008 to the other several cases of self-immolations among the Tibetans. (Han, 2014) And according to James Palmer, (2014) the Uighurs have taken the situation worse, and had also continued the battle against the Tibetans. The inter-communal tension that is prevalent is as a result of anti-colonial violence. Meanwhile, Xinjiang had also got worse against the government, where their violence was targeted against police stations, and the tensions exploded into inter-communal killings. Thus, this has some impact on the government.
Similarly, the major current issues is the fact that most Vietnamese are the most susceptible to attack of the Cambodia’s minorities, in which many of the Vietnamese have gone to settle there. However, cases of ethnic tension had been very low in Vietnam. (“Minority Rights”) According to Frommers, ethnic tensions in Vietnam are very limited.
d. Analysis of the effectiveness of the current governmental approaches to ease the tensions
The Chinese government had taken several steps in a plight to combat the separatists and terrorists and they also ensured that they monitored religious activity in the regions concerned not to raise or spread any kind of separatist views anymore. (Bhattacharji, 2012)
e. The future of the Tensions
The tension in China has experienced a reduction in the past two years, and there hadn’t been any news to buttress the earlier report of the tension in 2014. According to Tom Philips (2015) there had been strategies put together to avert any kind of extremism or insurgency among the ethnic groups. Philips added that there had been tremendous changes in Xinjiang, and Xinjiang stands at a new starting point for exploration of development and “the energetic government celebrations are part of a concerted push to depict the regions that were troubled as a place of possible economic opportunity and not ethnic riots.” Therefore, the look of things shows that there shouldn’t be any ethnic tensions. But, life changes and anything could happen.
Conclusively, there seems to be peace in Vietnam than in China, as studies have proven in China might be at war with the United States soon. However, there are currently no war or tensions between any of the ethnic groups in the countries.
