Hi! Trying to wrap my (non-math-y) head around the very basics of pb financials.Let's say a pb retails for $18 and the author got a $10k advance.  5-10% are royalties for the author and illustrator - ie they each get 5%/$1 (rounding .90) per book sold, AFTER the advance earns out. So they need to sell 10,000 books to earn out the advance?   How is the rest of the $18 broken out - by publisher, bookstore, agent, etc. Many thanks for setting me straight! 

Oy. Math. People HATE math answers, but OK, let me try.

Book is $18.00 retail price. Bookstores get it for anywhere from a 40-48% discount depending where they buy it, from the publisher vs from the wholesaler, whatever whatever. Let's say it's a 45% discount. That means the bookstore pays the publisher $9.90 cents for the book, and sells it for $18.00, and the rest is profit. (Of course we are assuming here THEY SELL IT -- if they don't, they will return it to the publisher and get their $9.90 back, but hey).

45% for the bookstore = $8.10

45% for the publisher -- but remember, they aren't just putting $8 bucks in their pocket and whistling dixie -- they have already paid out tens of thousands or possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars in advances, printing costs, warehousing, shipping, distribution for that individual book -- plus editor and designer salaries, keeping the lights on, etc -- so with that $8.10 they are recouping their initial investments first, then profiting later.

10% for the author/illustrator = $1.80 (split between author and illustrator if they are two separate people.) -- if that person or people are agented, .27 cents of the $1.80 goes to the agent(s) -- so if we are just talking about the author, they will get .90 cents, their agent will take about .13 cents per book sold, and they'll end up with about .77 cents per book -- but that comes out of the AUTHORS part, not the retail price of the book -- the author is still "credited" with the full .90 cents from the publisher.

Ergo, JUST from selling copies of the book, at a retail price of 18.00 and assuming a royalty rate of 5% against a $10,000 advance, the author would start earning royalties at 11,112 copies sold. Think of it like a bank account that is starting out -$10,000 overdrawn -- each book sold adds +.90 until the balance is 0, and after that each .90 goes to the author, paid out twice a year.

HOWEVER: There are often subsidiary rights sold also. So if, say, the publisher made a sale to the Junior Library Guild for $3000, and to a German publisher for $5,000, etc -- the author's portion of those sales would be applied to their account and go toward earning out their advance much more quickly. It IS therefore possible for a book to earn out its advance before a copy has even actually sold in bookstores. (Not PROBABLE -- but possible!) And that means you don't REALLY have to sell 11k+ copies before you earn out!
