Catching up
Okay, so. What’s up?
What do you mean?
You’ve been here twenty minutes, taken approximately eighty-seven sips of that wine and haven’t said a word.
Nothing really. It’s just been a typical Voyager day.
I didn’t just mean today, Lyssa. I mean how are you? I know we’re not the closest of friends but I’m not blind. Something’s going on.
TJ, please believe me when I say *nothing* is going on. We get up. We go to our duty stations. We fly on the same course. We go to bed. That’s all we’re doing.
Oooh… I see.
Yea. It’s fine. There’s no drama. No secrets. Just one very clean transporter pad.
You’re bored shitless.
Yes, but it’s... Well it’s just me. I mean I’m just not… It’s just a me problem TJ.
We’ll come back to the fact that you think a ‘me’ problem isn’t a real problem in a minute. What about off duty? Are you finding ways to keep busy? I heard you were sparring with B’Elanna, how’s that going?
She’s been busy with work stuff lately, so we haven’t sparred in a week or so. Plus she’s all happily married. I have to give her some time with Tom.
Have you been hanging out with anyone else? Going to the movies? The singles mixer? Anything?
No. I’ve just been keeping my head down, staying out of trouble, and keeping my mouth shut.
Look. I’m no counsellor. And it’s not my place to pry. But I care about you, Lyssa. And quite frankly I’m worried about you. Holing up in your quarters sixteen hours a day while you work the other eight isn’t always a great sign. So if there’s anything I can do to help…
Can you magic us about 50 new decks and a few hundred new people? Sorry. Gods. Sorry that was out of line.
It wasn’t out of line. Believe me I get tired of the same people, the same surroundings too. It’s been a long time.
I guess. Isn’t this is how humans were supposed to work though? Humans - communal mammals who form tribal bonds creating small tight knit communities. Shouldn’t this be enough?
I don’t know about tribal bonds, you’d have to talk to Chakotay about that. All I know is, lonely is lonely. Bored is bored. You’re allowed to feel however you feel. But if it becomes a problem, if it makes you anxious or depressed? Then this tribe is here for you.
Gods TJ that’s the problem. I don’t want this tribe to be here for me. I live for chaos and the unexpected and the previously unimagined. When I was a teen and I got bored I’d lie to both my parents, say that I was staying with the other one and bribe as many transporter clerks as I needed until I could get someplace new. One night I ended up climbing trees in the Amazon rainforest until I found the perfect spot to watch the moon set and the sun rise over some small winding river I couldn’t name. I snuck out during Sunday dinner with the family to lose all sense of time; of myself in the wretched excesses of carnival in Venice. Left my warm bed on a whim one morning to explore the lake region in northern Canada in winter and nearly lost 3 toes to frostbite. Joining Starfleet was supposed to help me scratch this itch safely. To make things better not worse. To keep me from getting myself killed.
And now, instead of just exploring the unknown, we’re also on an impossibly long journey. Where the excitement is life-or-death and the wonder of it all are these little gas stations along the way instead of the reason we’re here. And there’s no one to bribe, no shuttle you can call for to take you away.
Mmhmmm. It’s decidedly less than ideal.
You never found another way to scratch that itch of yours?
It really wasn’t a problem before. Well OK it was but not like this. When my wanderlust goes unsatisfied for long enough I... well it’s not pretty. Not pretty to the extent that my parents decided it was better for me to go wandering around wherever I pleased then try to keep me at home.
Dang, that bad, huh?
It was. When I didn’t get my adrenaline fix by exploring, I found ways to manufacture it at home. I started drama. I stirred the pot. I sniffed out unsettled relationships like you’d search for a leaking gas main and then I’d light a match for the thrill of watching the relationship explode. I hated that it hurt people, but I couldn’t stop myself from doing it. It was like picking at a scab. Even when I was the one being hurt I just couldn’t stop.
So what changed? Cause obviously you’re here now, you must have found some way to deal.
Lots of things. I traveled with Dad. Mum and Dad both agreed that the higher my grades were, the more freedom they would give me to roam. So I applied myself to getting the highest marks and explored and voila! I stopped being a menace to polite society. The Academy was a god send. Exciting drills, dangerous simulations, challenging classes, an ever changing milloux of people, and remarkable number of people looking for help with this or that ill-conceived prank. I had found the perfect career for my mental health.
Have you found any way to cope with this on Voyager? I can’t believe you’re not clawing at the walls.
I do, but only very briefly. After a day or two climbing the walls, I just stop. Like a ship becalmed at sea. It’s not all that bad TJ. I don’t spend all day crying or sleep all the time. I just disconnect for a bit; withdraw; go through a period of not caring.
We all do that, I suppose. I’m more concerned for the long term effects on your mental health.
TJ as far as I’m concerned the depression or the malaise or whatever you want to call it is a good sign. I don’t exactly enjoy these periods of...vast fuzzy white inconsequence, but reaching them means that I haven’t a.) broken regulations to go on an adventure or b.) gotten my adrenaline high through relationship drama. Unless we’re really lucky or really unlucky, you and I and the other 140 or so people on this ship are spending the next 80 years of our lives together. And I don’t want to spend a minute of that time in the brig or as a social pariah.
I don’t think you’re at risk of that as much as just going quietly nuts. Have you used the holodecks at all? Does that help?
Not really. I inevitably remember that I’m on the holodeck and cave to the urge to turn the safeties off. And when I can’t do that the fun’s gone; the illusion’s broken. When we’ve had some excitement, parkouring around crowded spaces on the holodeck gets the job done. But things have been so quiet recently TJ.
Hm… If I were to suggest a way for you to advance your career and get one of the biggest thrills of your life, would you try it?
You and I both know that I can’t say no to a proposal phrased like that.
Perfect! Give me a day to finagle a schedule or two and we’ll start. In the meanwhile, pass that bottle and tell me about the Amazon. I’ve never been...

@lyssacampbell
Hey Lyssa! Thanks again for your offer to make me a dress for the wedding.
To your questions: 1. I don’t care how long it takes for Farley to get me out of it, sounds like fun actually to get undressed at the end of the evening. 2. Farley does absolutely nothing for fashion except appreciate me in it or it on my floor. When I asked her earlier what she was going to wear she shrugged and said “I guess I gotta don the dress uniform for this one...” Right.
I’d personally love to see her in a well-tailored suit, something like this:
But it might take some convincing...
Anyway, please shoot me some options! I’m dying to see what you’ve come up with!!

My Spotify Recommends You a Book
I got the idea for this ages ago from my booktube friend Kelsey at IReadToday (her video) and I finally took the time to do it myself! Here's a link to my video.
1. Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk by Rufus Wainwright
I went with The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde because Dorian is definitely a hedonist, he loves the things in life that are a little bad for him. He doesn't mind overindulging and he has no worries because nothing will affect him physically.
2. Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Swede
Definitely had to go with The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams, because our male main character is hooked on his wife, Thea, and is desperate to make his marriage work, even when Thea is trying desperately to resist him.
3. It Was a Shit Show by Santino Fontana
Well... I wanted to go with The Maidens by Alex Michaelides, because that book was a shit show... but I'm too nice for that.
Instead, I picked These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong, because Roma and Juliette were lovers once, but have since broken up, and when we learn why... oh yeah, shit show. There are certainly a few moments where I can imagine Roma singing this song to Juliette.
4. Sucker for Pain by Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Imagine Dragons, Logic & Ty Dolla $ign feat. X Ambassadors
My initial thought was about a book that brought me a lot of pain, so then I was the sucker, but instead! I found Ravensong by TJ Klune, where the main couple is living out an enemy to lovers, second chance, forced proximity romance. These two certainly love one another, but they also can't stop themselves from hurting each other. However, since they are a part of the same pack, they don't have much of a choice.
5. Gossip by Nightclub
First off, you should definitely check this band out!
Second, of course, I went with a YA thriller for this, because gossip always runs rampant in high school. My choice was both books in Karen McManus' One of Us is Lying series. Each of these books revolves around the drama that ensues because of a gossip site that goes around the local high school. In the first book, the person who runs the gossip site is killed, but the site is revived for the second one.
6. It Only Takes a Taste by Drew Gheling & Jessie Mueller
I had a harder time with this one because the song is about two people realizing they have feelings for each other, even though they're married to other people, and I usually hate cheating as a trope. Instead, I went with an enemy to lovers book, To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo, where the relationship between the two main characters slowly improves because of small moments they experience with one another. I love this book!
7. Let's Have Intercourse by Scott Michael Foster
Oh man, this title always makes me laugh, and while this book doesn't involve our two main characters banging out their attraction so that they can resume hating each other, it does have arguing right up to the first kiss. Well Met by Jen DeLuca is a recent read for me, but I really enjoyed the long enemies stage between our couple!
8. Almost by Bowling for Soup
ANOTHER song that has an enemies to lovers feeling? Can you guess my favorite trope??
I had to pick We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal, because Nasir certainly has two Almost moments, where he nearly wins Zafira's heart, but of course, gets in his own way. The first time, they back track to enemies territory, and the second time, well.... dude.

If any of these books interest you and you want a more like... descriptive review from me, plz ask and be prepared for me to talk too much about it.
Post Office - Charles Bukowski (2/5 but a valuable experience nonetheless)
The Guy on the Right - Kate Stewart (1/5, a big fat NO THANKS)

The Turn of the Key - Ruth Ware (4/5)
On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous - Ocean Vuong (5/5 OOF)
The Hand on the Wall (Truly Devious 3) - Maureen Johnson (4/5)
Well Met - Jen DeLuca (a warm 3/5, would recommend)
Severance - Ling Ma (4/5, read right at the beginning of COVID19 so that was interesting)
The King of Crows (Diviners 4) - Libba Bray (Lowkey Don’t Want to Rate it/5, wasn’t the best but I still cried)
Bringing Down the Duke - Evie Dunmore (4/5, good ass time)
Lock Every Door - Riley Sager (2/5, no thanks)
Saga Vol. 7 - Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples (5/5)
This is How You Lose the Time War - Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone (5/5 holy fuck)
A Question of Holmes (Charlotte Holmes 4) - Brittany Cavallaro (3/5 MEH)
The Starless Sea - Erin Morgenstern (5/5!!)
Saga Vol 8 - Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples (5/5)
Saga Vol 9 - Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples (4/5)
The Bromance Book Club - Lyssa Kay Adams (2/5 and the point where I asked myself why I keep reading these adult contemp romances when I don’t like them)
The Silent Patient - Alex Michaelides (3/5 eh)
Beach Read - Emily Henry (4/5 and the point where I was like oh sometimes adult contemp romances are a good ass time especially when written by a favorite author lmfao)
The Last True Poets of the Sea - Julia Drake (4/5)
If We Were Villains - M.L. Rio (5/5, obsessed)
Heartstopper Vol. 1 - Alice Oseman (5/5)

Felix Ever After - Kacen Callender (4/5)
You Should See Me in a Crown - Leah Johnson (4/5, I loved this it was so sweet)
The Sun Down Motel - Simone St. James (4/5)
The Rural Diaries- Hilarie Burton Morgan (5/5 i had such a fuckin lovely time with this audiobook I stan her forever sorry bye)
One to Watch - Kate Stayman-London (4/5 but really like a 3.5/5)
Are You Listening - Tillie Walden (5/5)
Beloved - Toni Morrison (5/5)
Burn Our Bodies Down - Rory Power (4/5)
The House in the Cerulean Sea - TJ Klune (I’m technically still reading this but like I’m so close... it’ll probs be a high 4/5 or 5/5)
You may be thinking, Amanda, you seem very easy to please with all these 4/5s and 5/5s. The truth is threefold:
1. I know my taste very well and avoid the books I’d be rating low based off my taste and also other people’s reviews of them.
2. I give a bonus star to things I think deserve to be elevated and paid attention to but I’m not the audience for. So things like Queer YA may be a 3/5 for me writing wise but the fact that it’s like... queer and diverse means I’ll throw a 4/5 on it so the Goodreads score stays high?? Is that fake??? Maybe. Do I care? No.
3. If I like how it ends enough it’ll boost my score but sometimes in retrospect I’m like eh actually....
#book recs#book rec#bookblr#i am a very interesting person and i know you guys are just dying to know what interesting things i'm doing#((that's a big JK))

Personal Log
- Computer, begin log -
Ouch.
I ran the 10k race yesterday, and I am feeling it today. Thank goodness I'm on bridge duty; I don't think I could handle patrol or training today. I think I'll stop by sickbay later and get something from the doctor to help the soreness.
Anyway, the ship has been peaceful. Not many security issues, and it's been good for stress levels on the security team.
I've been working through a new holonovel, a fantasy from the early 21st century. It's been a good ride, very different from most holonovels I've done. If I do another I'll ask TJ to join me. Maybe Lyssa too, I haven't seen her much lately.
Anyway, that's about it. The datastream is open, and I'm looking forward to a letter from my parents.
- Computer, end log and insert stardate -

What are your thoughts on Lyssa, Lang and TJ?
@lyssacampbell, @ensignalang, @juniortjenkinsI am extremely pleased with these three officers. They did an excellent job taking control of Voyager during our recent time bubble crisis. They have very bright futures ahead of them and we are lucky to have them serving on our ship.

Bridge post: Breakthrough
Lang: We need to rule that one out.
Campbell: Are you sure?
Lang: Yes, even carrying their maximum payload, there is no way that the destruction of the two fleeing ships released energy on that scale. I know it’s otherwise a good match, but it’s just not possible.
Campbell: Ugh. I have to say I’m impressed, Audrey. How do you keep all those figures about ships payloads and engines straight.
Lang: It’s not as hard as you…
-console beeps -
Campbell: It’s your turn to answer.
Lang: It’s from Commander Chakotay.
Campbell: Was the send/receive time the same?
Lang: It was. Wow. Lyssa, come have a look at this.
Campbell: What is it?
Lang: Well they’re bubble is right next to the one Dalby and Ayala are in. Less than ½ a meter apart.
Campbell: Right, so...
Lang: He says their bubbles merged or something and became one bigger bubble.
Campbell: How? Did they figure out what is trapping us?
Lang: No. He says the only change they made was that they removed the air filter from the environmental system in Kes’ quarters.
Campbell: So they removed the air filter there, from the wall between the bedroom and the corridor outside it, and then the boundaries changed?
Lang: Yes - here’s the new layout. It looks like the side of the bubble which was running through that section of wall disappeared. The new bubble has almost the same outer perimeter as the the two separate bubbles, but now it’s one bubble. Wait… if this diagram is accurate then the air filter was equidistant from the edges of both bubbles when they were separate bubbles. We already know something in cargo bay one is attracting the… whatever this is right? So is there something stored in cargo bay one that is also in the air filters.
Campbell: Maybe - slow down. Let’s see if all the bubbles have air filters.
…
Campbell: It’s not constant, there are bubbles without air filters on the edge of them.
Lang: So it’s not just the air filters, but maybe it’s something inside them? Something that is used in other places on the ship too?
Campbell: Yes but there are… I don’t know 40 material components in them? And that’s before you account for what they filter from the air. Unless... where did we put the list of possible temporal anomalies?
Lang: Here.
Campbell: We got this down to three. How long does a query to the main computer take?
Lang: If we keep it precise? About 2 hours.
Campbell: Looks like TJ will get her full nap then. Because when this query gets back, we just might know what’s going on.

Working out and advice
Thank you so much. You have no idea how much I needed that. Just the emotional support feels awesome.
No problem Farley. Sorry I couldn’t be more of an opponent for you.
Nah, no worries. You were an awesome coach.
Like you need coaching. Actually, that’s what I wanted to talk to you about. Um… I don’t think I can be your sparring partner for a while.
As in until you’re fully recovered? How much longer does the Doc think you’ll need?
No, way longer than that. Kind of indefinitely. Uh... you’re probably not going to like this. I told Tom I would stop sparring with you, and Lyssa. It would eliminate one of my more risky activities.
As in exercise? You sure he isn’t overdoing it?
Well, maybe a little. But it does seem like a good idea now, you know, since we’re trying to get pregnant.
Nah. I get it. Maybe we could do stuff sort of like today?
Oh I still plan to work out. I’ll just do something that lets me come home with a few less bruises.
No, I get it. You sometimes just gotta make some compromises I guess…
Yes, you do. That’s part of being in a relationship.
Yeah…. so I’ve heard.
Okay lady, spill. What’s going on with TJ?
I don’t know. I haven’t seen her all week. She keeps telling me she’s busy. Maybe I’m just being dumb...
You’re not being dumb. Tom said she was late for her shift, too. That’s not like her. It all sounds a little strange, you two usually get together every day, don’t you?
Yeah. More or less. I asked her if anything was wrong, and she hasn’t mentioned anything. But ever since we got back from that damn planet she’s been distant.
Um… does it have anything to do with that guy. Glenn was it?
Glynn… I think it might… We had a lot of fun but then he decided to ignore everything we talked about and asked TJ to stay on Laethea with him. That made her really uncomfortable.
What?? You mean, stay. As in forever? No wonder she’s acting odd. How do you feel about all of this?
The fact that Glynn turned out to be a nutjob? Not great. I think it really tainted the experience for TJ.
But how do you feel about, I don’t know, the threat to your relationship? And how it’s clearly affecting her?
I don’t think we’ve reached “threat to our relationship” level quite yet. But I also don’t know what to do.
I guess my only advice is to simply be there for her, but don’t let her keep running away. Make sure she knows that you will listen and not judge her for whatever is going on inside her head. Trust me, that helps a lot.
Oh B….. When did you become so wise?
Haha! It’s actually from Tom. I’m usually the one pushing away and not wanting to talk about what’s going on with me. But he gently forces me to fess up to him and is accepting of my feelings, even if he disagrees.
Well, tell him thank you from me. Guess he’s worth all the trouble he causes after all, huh?
Yeah, he really is. And so is TJ. These pilots of ours, Farles, what are we going to do with them?
I have no idea… But please let me know once you’ve figured it out.

Uhm I hope I'm not a bother, but do you happen to know of any novels or series with a canonical asexual protagonist? Or any of someone's own works on like wattpad or something? I tried looking for some but couldn't find any :(
Okay this took me a little while because I’ve been busy but yes I know of many. Sorry that I haven’t read them all, I don’t have time. If you’d like to find more than what I’ve reccomended then here are some links to find them. You’re not bothering me btw, I’m happy to reccomend ace books. I remember sitting at my laptop in despair because I was having a rough time finding books with ace and or aro protagonists. I really hope this helps you out. 😊
Books I’ve Read:
The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan
The character Zoe Nightshade as well as the other hunters are asexual via word of god. This one means a lot to me because it’s the first book I ever read with an aexual character. This is not the first book in the series but it’s a part of The Lighting Thief series.
The Clinic by Charlie Care
This one’s alright but it was far from perfect and problematic in a lot of ways. I actually reviewed it here.
Books I own but haven’t read but own:
Chameleon Moon by RoAnna Sylver
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire
Dragonoak: The Complete History of Kastelir
Books I Recently Ordered but Didn’t Get Yet
Unburied Fables
This is an anthology type so it has many authors. Half the profit goes to the Trevor Project. Here’s a link
Ultraviolet by R.J. Anderson
This has a sequel called Quicksilver that I haven’t ordered yet
Books on my Amazon List that I Haven’t Read
A Word and A Bullet by Rachel Sharp
This is the sequel to The Big Book of Post-Collapse Fun
The Second Mango by Shira Glassman
The Last Chronomancer by Reilyn J. Hardy
The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic
How to Be a Normal Person by TJ Klune
Fourth World by Lyssa Chiavari
Deadly Sweet Lies by Erica Cameron
Tash Hearts Tolstoy by Katherine Ormsbee
From Under the Mountain by Cait Spivey
Afterworlds by Scott Westerfield
I haven’t read this book but I like some of this author’s work
Sheepfarmer’s Daughter by Elizabeth Moon
Torque by Charli Coty
Interface by Lucy Mihajlich
City of Strife by Claudie Arseneault
Clariel by Garth Nix

(And this is simply to hold a space to say I DNFed a few books and deserve at least one book toward my overall count because of it)
DNFs and Why:
Nevermore - Neil Gaiman: This isn’t a true DNF this is a “I’ll come back to this later” but I got about 20% in before accepting I wasn’t feeling it.
Leave the World Behind - Rumaan Alam: Y’all... I read 10 pages of this and I have never hated 10 pages more in my entire life. This is the most overwritten, pretentious garbage. This is classic man writes about tits from woman’s POV writing. The narration is a disaster. The main character makes really gross observations about her teenage children. I stopped and set this down basically when her 15 year old son’s nipple hair was mentioned as she watched him from inside the house while he jumped into a pool. I... i hate this book so fucking much.
House of Leaves - Mark Z. Danielewski: This is a “Maybe Someday” because I just... I was going cross-eyed. It was so boring and textbooky and maybe I’ll want to read it another time.
Girl Gone Viral - Alisha Rai: I just.... I juuuuuuuust hated this. The characters were like... they were so boring but then the author threw like four hundred sorta character details on them and it made it more boring.
