Namida no Paper Moon (“Tearful Paper Moon”)
“I like you, I like you, I like-hate you. You’re so cruel! You call out to any girl just as sweetly, treat them just as nice.”
OR: A teenage girl's re-imagining of the beloved jazz classic It's Only a Paper Moon.

SUKI SUKI SUKI SUKI・RA・I

I can’t sleep, on this starry night
It’s my first time feeling like this
I fell in love, you’re on my mind, my chest feels tight
I like you, I like you, I like-hate you
You’re so cruel
You call out to any girl just as sweetly, treat them just as nice
tonde kite UOU UOU TINKAABERU

KIRAKIRA koi wa ginga ni ukanda SHIRUETTO
konya mo yozora ni namida no PEEPA MUUN
Fly here, whoa whoa, Miss Tinkerbell,
I want you to tell him this fluttering feeling
This sparkling love is a silhouette floating up in the galaxy
Tonight yet again, there’s a tearful paper moon in the night sky¹
yume ni miru no yo Starry Night

torarete shimau wa
I see you in my dreams, starry night
A rendezvous for just us two
I’m almost inside your arms and that’s when morning comes
I like you, I like you, I like-hate you
I’m such a coward
At this rate, I’m sure another girl
Will come and steal you away
tonde kite UOU UOU TINKAABERU
seikaku naoseru kusuri ga hoshii no
KIRAKIRA koi wa ginga ni ukanda SHIRUETTO
konya mo yozora ni namida no PEEPAA MUUN
KIRAKIRA koi wa ginga ni ukanda SHIRUETTO
anata ga inai to namida no PEEPAA MUUN
Fly here, wow wow, Tinkerbell
I want a medicine capable of fixing my personality
This sparkling love is a silhouette floating up in the galaxy
Tonight yet again, there’s a tearful paper moon in the night sky
This sparkling love is a silhouette floating up in the galaxy
If you’re not here, it’s a tearful paper moon

¹ This is a reference to the lyrics of It’s Only a Paper Moon (“It’s only a paper moon sailing over a cardboard sea, but it wouldn't be make-believe if you believed in me.”) Basically, the world is hollow without the person you love, and it’s their love that makes the world (or the moon up in the sky) seem real.
Japan’s post-war and then 80s fascination with American jazz aside (fun fact, I’m pretty sure Matsumoto Iyo’s idol classic Sentimental Journey also got its name from the jazz classic), It’s Only a Paper Moon is apparently an especially beloved song, as it inspired this song, a tommy heavenly6 song, and the plot of one of Japan’s best-selling books, 1Q84.
Also, please check out Muto Ayami’s cover of this, it’s so utterly sweet that it’s secretly my favorite version of it.
