Day later and I have some musings about transgender/nb identity and interacting with 911.
We get a decent number of calls for and from transgender individuals.
The most bigotry I’ve heard in relation to transgender people is from other transgender people. And I don’t mean in a joking way, I mean we get trans people get on the line to fight each other, fight over a man, money, commit crimes against each other, you know, normal human behavior.
and HOOOOOLLLLEEEEEYYYYY SHEEEIIT do they drop the slurs, the insults, the foulest most bigoted language I’ve heard this side of 4chan. If y’all heard the tapes, you’d think it was some sort of right wing plant. Absolutely unbelievable.
(if I’m being really honest, this language is usually from mtf individuals, though let me be clear, I do not think my anecdotal experience reflects any broader trends, and I personally DO NOT think this reflects on mtf people. If anything, this type of behavior falls in line with the calls and we hear from cisgender women insulting each other, with the coat of bigotry changed.)
On the other side of it is the family. Very occasionally I hear from someone on the Fox News sauce….but mostly it’s family that doesn’t fully understand, yet is doing their best and is scared of how the system will interact with their person and trying to protect them.
This most often results in the family misgendering the individual if they aren’t fully passing. I’ve gotten really good at catching this sort of hesitation and nervousness from family - an avoidance of pronouns, an avoidance of a description, a hesitation to be honest about mental health issues —
(these calls are usually welfare checks, and they want to avoid opening the “the dispatcher thinks my person’s trans identity is a mental illness” box)
But…often at some point, it has to come out. Either a legal name doesn’t match a chosen name, or the individual is not passing but still presenting female and it becomes necessary to disclose that as a visual identification for police to locate them.
And there’s always that horrible moment where they freeze after disclosing it, waiting for my reaction. And then I don’t react, other than to just swap the pronouns and the name, and maybe add a few questions about possible reactions to hormone treatments or surgeries.
And honestly? The relief is just palpable. When I don’t react, they immediately switch to respecting names and pronouns. I get even bigger sighs of relief when the pronoun in question is “they/them”. They’re calling me to get help, not to debate my personal feelings on trans identity.
I think, especially online, a lot of trans people would immediately write off the family’s behavior as unforgivable, bigoted, and reflective of their rejection of the trans identity/toxicity/they don’t actually believe in the trans identity/the only solution is no contact. I think it’s more honest and more accurate to say that they’re trying to protect them by appealing to the most standard socially acceptable model for their age, race, and class. Mental health issues play a huge part of this and they’re trying to give their family the best shot.
On the officer end of things, it’s complicated.
(Obviously, there are bigoted officers. Obviously. I’m setting them aside, because I have absolutely nothing new to say on that topic.)
What I do notice is the officers who just don’t get it. Or who get it, but also have SOPs to deal with.
The ones who don’t get it, but like, don’t care really, are blunt and come off as/or are casually bigoted. This will manifest in questions like “does the person look more like a man or a woman” or “am I looking for butch lady or a crossdresser?” which, yes, is bigoted language and not good, but the purpose is purely utilitarian. They need weapons, race, sex, height, weight, clothing. They’re often scanning through a lot of people very quickly and the categories society commonly sorts people into are still very much in effect. And unfortunately trans people do still commit actually bad crimes and flee the scene.
(To bring the bigoted officers into the picture for a moment, they DO NOT get away with slurs or bigoted behavior on the radio or cameras. That shit can fuck a career up, especially if the victim pursues an inquiry)
Then you’ve got the standard operating procedures, the almighty policy to maintain professionalism and protect your job…stuff like, a male officer will pat down a male, a female officer will pat down a female. This is intended to avoid any inappropriate behavior across genders, but what happens when you have a trans woman with breasts and a penis? Tentative unofficial solution most officers have in the field is a male officer pats down the bottom, a female officer pats down the top. Or vice versa for trans men.
This of course fails to account for post-op or passing trans people. You’ll get officers correctly gendering their subjects, do the pat down, only for the trans individuals to weaponize their sex at birth to have a sexual misconduct complaint filed.
Unfortunately, weaponizing the tensions and issues around trans identity BY trans people is not at all uncommon. It may suck to hear, but it’s sadly fucking true.
(Blah blah anecdote blah blah, again, I am non-binary, glacially slowly ftm transitioning due to financial/professional reasons, currently begrudgingly accepting female identification, I’m not coming at this as a cis outsider looking to complain about trans people. Trans people are the minority of the minority of my 911 calls, but aS a qUeEr pErSOn I take note of the patterns with my people)
The long and short of it is that being in the middle of the Citizen -> 911 -> Police -> Citizen pipeline has radically expanded my perspective on a lot of issues.
This may be a strange PSA for my fellow non-binary and transgender gremlins, but…while there is absolutely a (n unfortunately highly high) chance of you interacting with a bigoted person on the 911 line, there is also a (n astronomically high) chance that you’re being misgendered because the quality of the phone line sucks ass

He's quite handsome, you note. In that rugged way, not quite so classically handsome as Azriel. The unexpected thought makes you flush. You shake it away with a shiver. "You have your reasons for your unease I bet," Cassian continues, his hands drifting back to his sides. His wings have begun to spread out a little more, as if relaxing. "And if you want me to piss off, I certainly will. My goal is not to make you uncomfortable in the slightest. But... well, I do have just one question." He pauses, as if waiting for something. Permission, you realise faintly, which surprises you enough that you give a rather jerky nod, permitting him to ask his question. A brilliant smile spreads across Cassian's face. "Did you really stab Azriel with a fork?"
a snippet from chapter nine of whom the shadows sing for <3 did someone say cassian friendshipppppp? (someone did hehe and i loved it so much) it just needs some formatting so looking to get it out in the next couple days !

Nova & Adrian: Both had their whole worlds just. Completely shattered when they were six years old. They lost at least one family member and everything was very different from then on out. There was some familiarity though, whether it be through family friends or an uncle. They'd grow up and handle their trauma differently, and hold strong regrets and consistently wish things had gone differently That Night. It wouldn't surprise me if they'll have to deal with wishing to return to that normal for a very, very long time.
Maggie/Evie & Max: There is no "normal" to return to. Their lives, from the very start, were altered for a different path. They lost their childhood before it even began. They have no memories of something to yearn for and they'll have to make guesses, hope for the best. Both had circumstances that drove them to being selfish or selfless and have to grow up. They are children and don't act like normal children. Sure, they may act childish sometimes, they'll remind you that They're just a Kid, but you wouldn't describe them as normal children. Their differences are obvious but both won't ever know what living with their biological parents would have been like. Maybe that's for the better. Maybe for the worse. Maybe a mix. But they won't know. And it is all because they are prodigies. Because of their superpower. Their curse, a blessing, it's all the same. There isn't much to focus on from the past, not really. Nothing from then is what they'd want to return to, aside from a few good memories. They'll adapt like they always have and who knows if they'll ever patch up the holes in their lives.

What are you doing down there?? How is Labour 'to far right' down under? Labour is far left . just shy of the socialists, on equal lefty as the greens.
i just woke up and i misread the ask and i was about to be so mean bc i thought u we’re an australian being a cunt🧍🏻‍♀️
like once upon a time labour was further left but they’re so like “ooooo we couldn’t possibly piss off conservative voters so we’re going to do nothing” these days. i meant “too far right” as in going too far to to the right, not that they’re far right yk that’s my b on wording

rereading an old x reader fic that you read in your early teens is so humbling because the reader persona in question is so unbelievably "not like other girls" and i think it makes me want to die a little... and in a sense there are some unbelievably raw teenager parts but god... for writing it in 2021... idk i don't think we should be promoting addiction to the wee kids of wattpad & ao3...
it's just edgy. but like. in a bad way. you're 15, you're just as much a loser as the rest of your class. chill out.
