While his sister goes to college, and his mom startings dating again, Scott Carlin must try to find a sense of direction. Semi-autobiographical for Pete (his dad died on 9/11, the movie changed when/how he died to disconnect it from a national tragedy and make it more personal and about Pete/Scott’s grief. Pete has also said this movie was a way for him to work through emotions and feelings surrounding that event), it imagines what life could’ve have been if he hadn’t gotten into comedy. For Apatow this was a movie about generational differences and parents not knowing how to help their kids through problems they’ve never had to face, and this movie did seem closer to This is 40 and Funny People. The initial scene in the basement, and scenes with Scott and his friends contrasted well with scenes of his mom and Ray’s budding relationship, and his sister’s graduation party and at school/parties, showing him sort of floundering around; and definitely contrasted nicely with scenes of him at the firestation and walking Ray’s kids to school (awww the relationship he developed with them, that superhero sketch, the daughter singing that song from Oklahoma and Scott know where the song was from!😆) I felt bad for the old security guard guy 😕 Scott and Kelsey’s first conversation in her bedroom was sad/sweet; their scenes on the ferry at the end were sweet (though did I hear the question wrong or did she get the math problem wrong?).
