He looks like royalty here.

Seriously the shape of these ornaments is so similar to Ying Long, it is hard to ignore the resemblence.

Just thinking about Ji Ling's name and wondering if it's foreshadowing the nature of this character .
I'm going to sound an absolute tinfoil-wearing clown for saying this and people must've already come to the same conclusion, but hear me out:
Ji Ling 寄靈/寄灵
寄 one of it's meanings is 'to entrust'
灵 means spirit/soul
So what if Ji Ling is part of Long Shen, so he's not an entirely different character who has the same face, but a part of a soul separated from Long Sheng that has formed it's own entity. *Edit* His soul is entrusted into this Ji Ling character for safe keeping, Ji Ling is a vessel for his soul maybe due to some sort of event that weakened Long Shen and he's biding his time until he can reawaken in his original form??
*is booed off stage*
(I forgot the word "vessel" lmao that's embarrassing, what is english?????)

Whoa I am so torn between joy and annoyance that the last few chapters have this...this reveal of the ML's past inner thoughts about their memories of the MC to the MC again. And it just has to be the last few chapters that this happens because prior to this the ML's motivations and feelings rarely were shown so clearly as this and at this juncture the ML is going into grave danger and they might not see each other again. (Pfft no worries I know Meng Xi Shi's books never end in tragedy no? Lol)
Yun Weisi and Long Shen!!! Gosh why does you two have to be a Tsundere like this!?! You made me cried at your past monologue!

Li Jie ran a thumb alongside the sword’s edge, watching the lights flicker and disappear on the metal. Sharp, and unforgiving. Perhaps, one cold bite, and he would be free from his cursed oath?
No.
The blade was forged centuries ago to protect the innocent of the country, he will not disgrace it like that.
Sunlight flickered through the trees and kissed his brow, but Li Jie felt no warmth. It was a day like this, cloudless and peaceful, when he heard Ji Ling cry out his name, when he caught the prince and watched him bleed out, whispering false reassurances and promises as the beloved body fell still in his desperate embrace.
It was a day like this when Ji Ling fell asleep, and the dragon god Long Shen woke up in his stead.
Cold, powerful, regal, divine. Everything Ji Ling was not.
Li Jie closed his eyes and felt his heart bleed again. The dragon reborn blessed them with his presence during the morning master – Li Jie felt those eyes on him, wondering, questioning- but refused to meet them. It still hurt too much to see the dragon wear that face.
A sudden gust of frosty air swept through the leaves around his feet, and Li Jie shivered.
“Lord Shen.”
“Jie-Daren.”
That voice. Same voice, but glacial and deep, no laughter, no lighthearted banter, no warmth. No life. Like a deep stream frozen solid at the onslaught of frost.
“You’ve been avoiding me.”
“Forgive me. Too many duties.”
Li Jie turned around to look at Long Shen but trained his eyes on the white robe instead. Dark long hair was flowing down the shoulder, adorned with white fur and silk ribbons. Ribbons he carefully chose for another not long ago.
Li Jie’s throat burned.
“You wouldn’t even look at me.”
“My lord.”
A shaky sigh, followed by merely a whisper.
“Do you hate me this much?”
Li Jie’s grip on the sword tightened,
“I wouldn’t dare.”
“Then why are you leaving?”
“There are plenty of talented guards at your side.”
A pause.
“You swore an oath.”
An accusation? A reprimand? A question?
The words bit into his heart and ripped out another piece.
There wasn’t much left.
“I failed.”
“What?”
“I let the one in my charge get hurt and die. I’m not qualified.”
“I am still here.”
Li Jie felt his veins burn with acid and growled out, finally meeting Long Shen’s eyes. The same face was looking at him, but he couldn’t master anything inside his heart but hate.
“You’re not him.”
Long Shen flinched as if he was struck by the sword Li Jie was gripping in his hand. The poised mask slipped, giving away his emotions, and for a brief second Li Jie thought he saw something. Pain? Sadness?
He was imagining things.
Lord Shen’s long fingers intertwined with the long braid and caressed the silky ribbon.
They were trembling,
“I still remember when you got me this.”
“What?”
“I still remember how you kissed me for the first time under the peach blossom tree”.
Li Jie was shaking.
“What kind of game is this?”
Long Shen’s arm fell to his side as his eyes wondered over the guard’s face, searching for something and not finding it.
“I’m sorry.”
His voice was quiet and soft; shoulders slumped as he lowered his eyes.
“I can’t be him anymore, I can no longer be human.”
Long Shen’s laugh was short and bitter,
“The fate is cruel, but the burden is mine to bear.”
He finally met Li Jie’s gaze and let the silence linger, his eyes following the lines of the guard’s face as if he was committing them to memory one last time.
“I release you from your oath. You will be relieved of duty with full honors.”
The Lord’s face let the mask slip again, and for a fleeting moment Li Jie saw the person beneath- beautiful, young, marred by sadness. And tired. He looked so very tired.
Emotions in Li Jie’s chest fluttered like caged birds, trying to break free, but he didn’t make a sound.
“I’m sorry. And thank you. I know you loved him.” – he paused and turned away.
“He loved you too.”
It must’ve been a trick of light, but…
Li Jie’s hand snapped forth, breaking all protocols and grabbing Long Shen by his arm, and the Lord choked out a sob.
Left cheek for sadness, right cheek for joy. Ji Ling had a peculiar habit of crying with only one eye, another quirk that Li Jie found most endearing.
“Look at me. Please.”
Long Shen hesitated, but Li Jie didn’t loosen his grip.
"Are you?"
A single tear rolled down the dragon’s left cheek, glistening in the light like a diamond. Li Jie swept it away with his thumb, and the young Lord shivered and melted into his touch.
The guard felt lightheaded, his voice shaking.
“You are!”
Long Shen Ji Ling? Closed his eyes,
“I’m…more. I can’t…”
Another tear, and Li Jie caught it too, swept away from the blushing cheek, relief and resolve to flood his veins and to light him up with hope.
“I’ll stay.”
Young Lord’s lips trembled and curled into a shy smile as Li Jie caught the last tear, rolling down the right.

Shen Qingqiu, pissed off during a peak lord meeting: when I die I want Shang-shidi to lower me into the earth, just so he can let me down one last time
Shang Qinghua: bro c'mon
Yue Qingyuan, abruptly overcome by jealousy so intense that he's on the verge of a qi deviation: but I thought I was the one who let Xiao Jiu down the most...?

Ok but what if Shen Yuan and Shen Jiu were the same person.
Little YQY is used to little baby SJ being a little strange. He talks about missing 'the internet' and one night when they almost freeze to death he solemnly informs YQY that "this transmigration experience sucks, 0/10 would not recommend."
As they grow SJ stops talking about odd things, but since he never explained about his past life to YQY he doesn't realize SJ is forcing himself to forget those memories of being warm and safe and happy because they hurt too much now when he is none of those.
The System is still there if course but since LBH isn't even born yet it's in low power mode. But that night locked in Qiu Manor after YQY leaves it pops up with a notification he's finished the 'Sorrowful Parting' quest and he loses it.
He alternates between insisting it doesn't exist and demanding to know why it only shows up when something bad happens to him. The System explains this is all necessary character development before he meets the main character.
SJ rages, not because he's not the main character but because he apparently needs to suffer for them, this person he's never met. Eventually the System turns off all notifications except essential ones, and that at least leaves SJ mostly alone in his own head.
And he takes that buried ache of his past memories and that he was apparently born to suffer and uses them to save himself when YQY fails him. Even though he promised. And he's fine- look, he's a Peak Lord! He's fine.
Until LBH turns up at the peaks, the System lights up for the first time in a decade, and SJ looks at this little boy and hates him. SJ can't see him without thinking about all the hurt he suffered, which the System insists was necessary for this boy's story.
So he does all those horrible things to LBH that he railed about as SY a lifetime ago and doesn't regret it. (PIDW is mostly lost to him, buried under the trauma, he doesn't know who LBH is, or who he is)
Until the qi deviation, which wipes all his memories except the ones he has buried. So he feels like he's a different person. He thinks he's transmigrated in late because he can't remember being 5 and teaching YQY carmeldansen.
A week after the deviation YQY hears SJ mutter something about Google and he relaxes, he does recognize this SJ after all.
Meng Mo pulls the memories out of SY's head after all. For all that SY draws the line between himself and SJ as different people he still remembers SJ's memories. But crucially not the ones from when he was little where his past and current lives overlap the most.
Sometime after the series ends SQQ is humming something modern- my heart says 'Never Gonna Give You Up'- and YQY casually mentioned he's always liked that one most of SJ's songs.
SQQ: What songs?
YQY: The ones only you know. You used to sing them all the time when you were little.
SQQ's head is spinning and he finds some privacy and questions the System which confirms he did in fact transmigrate as a baby like SQH did.
The memories come back slowly after that. He remembers telling LQQ he'll kill him after a bad fight, street kid him trying to explain to YQY what a T-Rex is... exactly what was going through his head when he dumped a cup of hot tea on an orphan he'd just met.
And SY has to deal with the fact that yes actually, that was him. That wasn't some other asshole. It's him, he's the asshole. Maybe that was the worst possible version of himself, maybe he got a second chance and changed for the better - but it was still him, and he's still capable of being that man again if he isn't careful.
