hello to the, uh, 200+ new followers i've gained from trivia. im finally remembering to throw out a quick pitch for some of my fics to you lot. can i interest you in some lanterns

Lamplight AU

Lamplight a DnD-inspired fantasy renchanting/treebark au in which Martyn is a paladin-by-desperation and Ren is his god. if you've ever seen fanart of Martyn with a lantern / staff around, that's this!

Ren has lost his body and been left in the form of living fire, and Martyn has been separated from his adventuring party. the two of them are looking for a way to restore both of these, and doing a lot of arson in the interim. the fic is about 50k, most of which is "canon" storyline and the rest of which is "non-canon" ship fic. there's also plenty of cool art and even some animatics for the fic, all of which i absolutely recommend trawling thru the "lamplight au" tag for (on here or on my writing blog, @driflew, or checking the fanart tab on my blog). there are even a pair of spin off fics written by close friends of mine for desert duo and boat boys!

lamplight is written out of chronological order and uploaded whenever. work on it lately has been slow, but it's still ongoing

A Romance Route for the Doomed Villain?!?

(for the record. that title was NOT my idea). this au is also known as treesekai, or the treebark isekai dating sim parody oneshot. martyn is a normal man far too obsessed with the main antagonist of a poor-quality dating sim, the very same dating sim he's isekai's into. silly crack treated seriously parody fic as a love/hate letter to the many, many isekai webcomics ive read on webtoon originals over the years. it has a lot of rlly cool art and fic based of it, which you can find in the "treesekai" tag here or my writing blog

Treebark Week 2023

i also have a handful of oneshots from participating in every single day of treebark week around this time last year. these oneshots are for a bunch of different aus, such as a One Piece au, a beauty and the beast au, a lamplight roleswap au, a hero/villain au, a king/pirate au, and a mer au. all of these aus were developed with the help of other people (Rev for the One Piece au, and Cherri for the rest) and have other fics or art attached!

you can find bonus scenes from all of these aus, fanart or fan writing (including several page long comics or animatics), and even scenes from other aus i havent posted on ao3 over at my writing blog, @driflew, under the "lew writes" tag

Absolutely delightful ASL fic and includes tws for each chapter!! It definitely has horror elements to it, but it's also just a really good read and has A++ ASL trio interactions and has a happy ending, so I'd give it a read even if angst isn't your kinda thing. I drew fanart for it a while back :]

This one is ASL but make it Over the Garden Wall. Did I cry reading this? Yes. Will you cry? Probably. Knowledge of OTGW isn't actually needed and the interactions between the brothers and the way the fic handles grief and processing it is incredibly good.

Two and a Half Pirates by Pirate_Trafalguy

Garp thought he was quite brilliant when, in an effort to discourage Ace and Sabo’s ambitions of piracy, he gives them custody of his new baby grandson. After all, the two might have been teenage delinquents, but even they wouldn’t actually go out to sea with a baby in their care, right?

Hint: he is very, very wrong.

(An AU where Luffy is born 16 years after Ace instead of 3, and Sabo remains with Ace on Mt. Corvo instead of trying to set sail on his own.)

Anyone who's suffered to hear me talk about ASL knows how much I adore AUs where Luffy is just a little guy. A baby. A toddler. Perfect for throwing. And this AU delivers and it's so delightful to see Ace cave at baby Luffy's general Everything until he stops being in denial about loving him.

Just a lil modern au heartwarming fic!! It's short and sweet and also someone gets fucking pranked. I think taizi also has a bunch of good OP fics in general if I'm remembering right, so I definitely recommend checking them out.

Within Risk of Reason by Depths

Sabo stared and thought, for a single, absolutely calm moment: fuck, I must be dead.

Dead and dreaming, he decided, staring down at his two brothers. His dead brother, and his littlest brother, glaring him down from the center of a burning junkyard.

I'm such a sucker for time travel fics and even more of a sucker for time travel fics where someone goes back in time to raise other characters. Add Sabo to the mix and you understand why I'm losing my mind over this fic. It hasn't been updated in a hot minute, but has just incredibly delightful ASL+Adult Sabo shenanigens and is just a fun time overall :]

The obligatory sex-repulsed ace Jon fic that every asexual TMA writer tries their hand at eventually.

This is without a doubt the most popular thing I wrote this year, which makes me laugh considering I remember disliking the way I ended it. Still, I appreciate the support a ton, esp bc I'd been sitting on the concept of this fic for months prior. TMA fandom rlly will see an ace Jon oneshot and go is anyone gonna shower that in kudos and not wait for an answer. Love that for you guys.

as long as you can remember (Mar, 3k, TMA, oneshot)

A short horror piece focusing on combining Annabelle's original plan to fill Martin with spiders and the amnesia-inducing effects of Salesa's camera, tied together with narration from MAG 195 in one awful time loop.

I had so much fun with this one!! I loved balancing the spider pinata, amnesiac camera, and typing the start to the ending through use of the statement and repeating the opening of the fic at the end. I also made a lot of ""Martin's"" dialogue mirror lines of his from important JM conversations in canon, and went so far as to research the body temperature of spiders for a line of prose about holding Martin's hand. I'm honestly super fond of this piece because of how much fun I had putting it together.

to be shaped by such strange things (May, 3k, TMA, oneshot)

A piece about how s1 Jon and Sasha are often depicted with glasses, yet NotSasha and late-series Jon are often not, and how losing the lenses through which you see the world really does mean losing a piece of yourself, even if it doesn't seem like it. Or, The Beholding fixes Jon's eyesight is a terrifying and devastating headcanon and I'm going to make that everyone else's problem.

I've needed glasses my entire life and I feel most of the plot points or acknowledgment I've seen about characters' glasses has involved making them not need or not wear them anymore. I'm rather fond of mine, though, and I wanted to write something that reflected that (n pun intended.) That piece is strange things, which I couldn't be happier with, honestly.

Lucid (adj.) (May, 3k, original, complete)

A journal-entry style horror piece about lucid dreaming, trouble sleeping, and the horror that is straddling a nightmare between them. A 'love' letter to the power of an over-active imagination.

I lucid dream IRL, so Lucid (adj.) was so interesting and entertaining to write. I barely ever write original, but I'm so glad I did--this wouldn't have worked any other way. I got to tear into and pick apart a very specific but real fear of mine, based on an actual nightmare I'd had about a month before writing this piece. I'm super fond of this one, so if you like slow-build psychological horror, I cannot recommend it enough!

on a cliche (July, 833, original, complete)

Two strangers meet in a cafe and discuss an age-old question. A piece about whether one would rather to have love and lost.

This might be my favorite thing that I wrote this year? Which is very funny considering that when I wrote it for class, I was sure it was going to be torn apart in critique. Making the setting appear dreamlike without completely tipping my hand was probably my favorite part of the piece. Out of everything on here, this is probably the most sweet/lighthearted thing I wrote/posted this year, so if my writing is normally too depressing for you, I recommend this piece.

my witness brings me into existence (Aug, 4k, TMA, oneshot)

A transcript-style fic about NotJon, and what happens when one lives in the world where they have been forgotten. Archivist Sasha and NotJon returned from the dead, taking place during MAG121. I've read every piece in the NotJon tag on AO3 that I could find and it shows, I think.

God I fucking love this piece. I wrote the first draft of it over discord entirely spur-of-the-moment to my friend @/daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaavid, believe it or not, sitting outside and being bitten my mosquitoes literally the whole time. I actually have most of the next parts of this fic sitting in my drafts, but I've been far too busy to finish them. It also has lovely art from @/macmonky, which I'm still enamored with. I really don't have a bad word to say about my witness, go check it out!

dead and undying (Sept, 7k, DSMP RP, complete multichap)

I spend far too much time thinking about Technoblade's execution and it shows. A fic about Techno not finding Tommy has hidden in his basement to escape exile and speedrunning Doomsday about it. If you like reading stories about stories or think the wither is a terrifying mob you should read this fic.

its my birthday which means i get to be cringe on main and you all have to let me. i really enjoyed writing this one! The execution and revival with the totem is some of the most fun body horror I've ever written, and this fic has very lovely art!

To finish out,

this year I didn't write quite as much as last year, but I also wasn't home all day in quarantine, so I'm alright with that! What I did write (and post--I have a lot of unfinished/unposted writing this year), I'm overwhelmingly happy with, after all! All in all, my posted writing for this year totaled up to 25,000 words!

this is my writing blog i’m posting dsmp fic excerpts on it if anyone wants to see

i didn't forget about six sentence sunday, i said i would do it and i am! here's six sentences from an unnamed new dsmp / emerald duo au i've started working on which is currently only dubbed, uh, "traitor phil au," from when phil first meets technoblade at the start of techno's retirement

Technoblade is dressed like he’s going to war. He’s decked out in full netherite armor, gleaming from head to toe with the magic of a dozen powerful enchantments. A sword hangs at his left hip, glowing bright enough with magic to be visible even within its sheath. The axe in his hand glows similarly where he rests it over his shoulder, showing off the time and effort he put into making every inch of himself as deadly as possible.

It’s almost enough to disguise the fact he’s using the axe for wood, not blood, or that he’s puzzling over a set of blueprints rolled out over a crafting table. Above him is the framework for what will likely end up being a house, already dusted with the same powdery snow that surrounds the clearing he’s chosen to settle in.

the premise is that phil and techno are not old friends and meet for the first time after phil arrives on the server, meaning phil's first impression of techno is what he hears from lmanberg. they ask him, as the angel of death and their late ex-founder's grieving father, to spy on the traitor to their country and help them protect wilbur's home by taking technoblade down.

i dont have much of it written and i dunno if i plan to finish the whole thing, but i do have the whole thing planned out (with help from rev) and i wanted to try writing a bit of it!

Had there been a scene in Leaflight where (I don't exactly remember how things happened) Martyn was in a human(?) form and some bandits or something cut off his head and Ren thought he was dead and cried on him and he came back and killed the bandits, then he and Ren hugged and he pushed Ren's head into his shoulder because his head was a bit unsightly while still regenerating?

Sorry for the long description. I thought it was Leaflight, but I can't find the scene anywhere, so I feel like I'm going crazy. I just recall loving it lots and lots
