today's bird is the great black-backed gull!

- they are the largest member of the gull family

- they sometimes hunt other adult birds like grebes and puffins

- cornell calls them the "king of the atlantic waterfront" (fancy!)

- some great black-backed gulls can live up to 26 years!

18th June 2024: Views, vetch, meadow crane's-bill, buttercups, one of my first pyramidal orchids of the year a treasure to see such a key sight of summer at Lakeside Country Park today and roses on the bush in the garden.

My first Ringlets and Large Skipper of the year as my surge of butterfly and general insect sightings of species I needed to see after a few days of more settled weather continues with my butterfly year list up to 29, Red Admiral, Small Heath, Black-tailed Skimmer, Emperor dragonfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Great Crested Grebe, Moorhen, Lesser Black-backed Gull seen out the back at home and at Lakeside, young Starlings at home, Greenfinch heard at Lakeside, bindweed, grass vetchling, water dropwort, wild carrot and self-heal were other highlights today.

The Mediterranean gull (Ichthyaetus melanocephalus) is a small gull that lives and breeds around the coasts of Europe, the Mediterranean, and northern Africa. Their range has expanded in recent decades. They typically measure 36-38 cm (14-15 in) in length and 92-100 cm (36-39 in) in wingspan. They have a black head, white eye crescents, white body, pale grey back and wings with white primaries, dark red legs, and dark red bill with black band. They eat fish, insects, and carrion.

The lesser black-backed gull (Larus fuscus) is a large gull that breeds along the northern coasts of Europe and Russia and migrates to winter as far south as western Africa and eastern North America. They typically measure 51-64 cm (20-25 in) in length and 124-150 (49-59) in wingspan. They have white underparts and head, black or dark grey wings with black tips and white "mirrors," yellow legs, and yellow bill with red spot. They eat fish, eggs and nestlings of other birds, carrion, and shellfish by dropping them from the air onto rocks below to break them open.

And finally, in many species (e.g., Greylag Geese, Oystercatchers), individuals form bisexual trios that parent offspring together (often contrasting with heterosexual trios and/or homosexual pairs within the same species).⁶⁷

Although female coparents in Acorn Woodpeckers are "platonic" in that they do not specifically engage in courtship or sexual behavior with one another, they still participate in group mounting displays characteristic of this species (which usually include homosexual mounting and may actually involve mounting of their coparent).

29/03/2024-Mallard at Lakeside, pony at Rockford Common in the New Forest, view at Rockford Common, Great Crested Grebes and chick at Lakeside it was great to see the parents and young birds on the water today, view at Lakeside and Fallow Deers in the sun in the New Forest on the way home this evening.

It was also great to see Siskins and Sparrowhawk really well, Tufted Ducks, Lesser Black-backed Gull and Peacock butterfly at Lakeside with Chiffchaff, Chaffinch, Dunnock, Meadow Pipit, Stonechats, Woodlarks and Cormorant seen on the walk at Rockford Common. Fantastic time spent outside on Good Friday.

I have decided Lesser Black Backed Gulls are my favorite gull bc that's where we are right now and it feels like if I was a small kid and my parents took me to a plushie shop and told me they would by any plush I wanted included the incredibly cool and expensive ones and I just grabbed Default Teddy Bear #13929492 and said "This One... ." with the brightest, most pleading pathetic wet eyes
