50 Years of Island Books: Kevin O'Brien
Tumblr media
Before his thrillers landed him on the New York Times and USA Today Bestseller lists, Kevin O’Brien was a railroad inspector. The author of 21 internationally-published thrillers, he won the Spotted Owl Award for Best Pacific Northwest Mystery and served on the board of Seattle 7 Writers. Press & Guide said: “If Alfred Hitchcock were alive today and writing novels, his name would be Kevin O’Brien.” Kevin O’Brien’s latest nail-biter, The Enemy at Home, just hit shelves in August 2023.
Miriam: Welcome Kevin! What does it take to get you over the bridge to visit us at Island Books?
Kevin: It’s a bit of a challenge for me to get to Island Books. I live on Capitol Hill and don’t have a car. But when my friend, Garth Stein, had a book signing there, I was up for the task! The light rail and a bus got me to Island Books in just over an hour. The store, at first glance, struck me as “quaint.” Then I stepped inside, and saw it went on and on and on! Laurie and the staff were so warm and friendly—and total pros. And what a wonderful selection of books, cards and fun knickknacks. I became an instant fan of Island Books. The customers and sales people all seemed to know each other. I kept thinking, if “Cheers” was a bookstore, it would be Island Books.
Tumblr media
In the summer of 2019, I was over the moon when Island Books offered to host a signing for my newly-released thriller, The Betrayed Wife—with Garth interviewing me. It was a blast—more like a party with thirty friends than a book signing. And the thing is, I only knew about a third of the people there. Island Books is one of the friendliest bookstores I know.
Miriam: It's funny, you're not the first author I've interviewed for our blog who compared our store to the show Cheers. At this rate, people will think Laurie's serving something on tap. It's interesting that you first came to us for a signing with Garth, and that prepared and led to your own store event. I love how authors bring more authors in. Getting off-island traffic into the store can be challenging when we host events, so the fact that you took the light rail and the bus over to see us counts for a lot!
You're also an incredibly prolific author and so supportive of other writers. Will you tell us a bit about your work with the Seattle 7 Writers and Hugo House, and how you've seen our local indie bookstores support the surrounding writing community?
Kevin: Being part of Seattle 7 Writers was an honor and an absolute blast. I joined early on in 2009, but wasn’t one of the original seven (actually ten by the time they made it official: Garth Stein, Jennie Shortridge, Maria Semple, Erica Bauermeister, Carol Cassella, Stephanie Kallos, Randy Sue Coburn, Kit Bakke, Bharti Kirchner and Mary Guterson). Garth was in my writers’ group, and I think he desperately wanted another guy in the Seattle 7 when he recruited me! For the first couple of years, I was just an enthusiastic participant/promoter for events like The Novel Live (a five-day live-streamed writing marathon at Hugo House, which became Hotel Angeline: A Novel in 36 Voices; an auction during the event and the resulting book raised over ten thousand dollars for literacy programs) and Write Here Write Now (a day-long writing program where noted authors taught classes and individually coached new writers; another fund-raising event where the profits went to literacy organizations). I also showed up at fellow members’ book signings, which was always fun.
There’s strength in numbers. Local independent bookstores like Island Books became incredibly supportive of Seattle 7 Writers. They could count on several of us showing up whenever they had an event or hosted a book signing by one of our authors.
We also worked closely with Hugo House, where I taught classes and donated my books for auctions. When I served on the Seattle 7 Writers board, I assisted on projects, wrote Thank You notes to donors, and help promote events. By 2019, when we retired Seattle 7 Writers, we had 80 members (including some high-profile authors like Tom Robbins, Terry Brooks, Timothy Egan, Elizabeth George, Kristin Hannah, Daniel James Brown, Erik Larson and Susan Wiggs, to name a few). It was bittersweet wrapping it up. But fortunately, many of us are still pretty close, and the bonds we’ve formed with local bookstores are as strong as ever.
Happy Anniversary, Island Books. Thanks so much for inviting me to participate in celebrating the anniversary of one of my favorite bookstores!
Miriam: I love hearing all of this and am grateful you could share it here on the blog. These connections explain how deep our literary community goes and demonstrates how essential indie bookstores are to a thriving creative community. It's always a pleasure to hear from you, and I can't wait to read The Enemy at Home and spot it on our shelves.
To our customers, stay tuned for the next 50 Years of Island Books installment, featuring two authors who've left their mark on the store, Ashley Ream (The 100 Year Miracle) and Lee Kravetz (The Last Confessions of Sylvia P.). They have a good story of how Island Books brought them together.
—Miriam

I told myself a year ago 2023 would be the year of ART but ended up being "year of financial worries & bizarre work drama/year of getting onboarded physically and emotionally at new, economically viable job" so I could tell myself Fair Enough! but I yearn for more.

HARTFORD WOLF PACK CHALLENGE TORONTO MARLIES
Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack HARTFORD, CT – The Hartford Wolf Pack return home to kickstart another brief two-game homestand tonight as they welcome the Toronto Marlies to town for their only season visit. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m., and coverage is available on both AHLTV and Mixlr. Tale of The Tape: This is the second and final meeting of the season between the Wolf Pack and the Marlies. The sides met on March 11th in Toronto, a game the Marlies won 3-2 in overtime. Will Lockwood opened the scoring 15:04 into the second period, firing a shot from the right-wing wall that clipped Joseph Woll and trickled into the net. Radim Zohorna tied the game at 18:46, batting a rebound out of midair for his eleventh goal of the season. The Marlies took their first lead of the night at 11:11 of the third period, as Kyle Clifford scored his sixth goal of the season. However, Hartford responded in the final minute after the Marlies missed two chances at the empty net. Adam Clendening rushed down the ice and sent a backhand pass toward the front of the goal. The puck clipped Jake Leschyshyn and found the back of the net at 19:23 to secure a point for the Wolf Pack. In overtime, however, Logan Shaw would snap home his 18th goal of the season at 2:39 to give the Marlies the extra point. The Marlies have now won two in a row in the head-to-head series. They won 4-1 at home on April 15th, 2022. Hartford’s last win head-to-head came on January 19th, 2022, by a final score of 5-2. That was also Toronto’s previous visit to Hartford. Wolf Pack Outlook: The Wolf Pack won their fourth straight game on Saturday night, defeating the Lehigh Valley Phantoms by a final score of 5-1 at the PPL Center. Lauri Pajuniemi opened the scoring with a breakaway goal at 2:18, giving Hartford a lead they never lost. Lockwood deflected home the eventual game-winner at 5:38, giving the Pack a 2-0 lead after one. Emil Andrae got the Phantoms within a goal at 7:33 of the second, but that’s as close as they would get in this contest. Then, in the third period, Tanner Fritz, Jonny Brodzinski, and Ryan Carpenter lit the lamp to allow Hartford to pull away for two key points. Dylan Garand made 34 saves for the victory. Brodzinski leads the Wolf Pack in points with 46 (21 g, 25 a) in 43 games. He was named the AHL’s ‘Player of the Month for March after scoring 20 points (11 g, 9 a) in eleven games. Will Cuylle, meanwhile, leads the team in goals with 24. Marlies Outlook: The Marlies snapped a seven-game losing streak on Sunday with a 6-2 triumph on home ice against the Belleville Senators. Trailing 2-1 late in the second period, Zach O’Brien scored his second goal of the season at 19:48 to tie the game and send it to the final stanza with a score of 2-2. In the third period, the Marlies struck four times to pull away for a victory that clinched them the North Division crown. First, Semyon Der-Arguchintsev gave the Marlies the lead for good at 3:17, then Shaw, Zach Solow, and Pontus Holmberg tacked on the insurance markers at 8:53, 13:51 and 17:33, respectively. Shaw leads the Marlies in scoring with 65 points (20 g, 45 a) in 64 games. Bobby McMann, currently with the parent Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL), leads the club in goals with 21. Shaw is tops among active skaters in goals with 20. Game Information: WATCH: AHLTV LISTEN: Mixlr Play-by-play voice of the Wolf Pack, Alex Thomas, will have ‘Wolf Pack Pregame’ starting live at 6:45 p.m. on both AHLTV and Mixlr. INSIDE THE ISSUE
Barbara Bertino‘s Sailing the Dry Land graces the front cover of Kolaj 36. Odeta Xheka discusses Bertino’s work in a larger article about the painterly influences and attitudes of collage artists. Xheka writes, “These contemporary collage artists continue to explore the versatility of the medium. They are not necessarily looking to convey a message or make a grand statement, but are always on the lookout for innovative ways to satisfy their curiosity in aesthetics and materiality.” Melissa Sutherland Moss‘ Nina Simone, First Lady appears on the back cover and a portfolio of her work appears in the issue.
In Copyright News: As Andy Warhol Foundation v. Lynn Goldsmith Heads to the Supreme Court, Ric Kasini Kadour reports on the case and asks, Is fair use on the line?
Collage in Motion Fellow Laurie O’Brien shares the story of how she found her medium. Christopher Kurts interviews Retama, the first collective of women composers of contemporary music in Peru, about their project to make collage seen & heard.
How many bits are needed to make a collage? We explore the idea of a “Two-Bit Collage,” a playful sort of minimalism illustrated by Gregory Hom’s collage. “Two-bit often means ‘cheap’, and should by extension mean that the work is shoddy or not well-thought-through. But the world of collage as I’ve seen it during the past seven or so years is full of two-bit collages, and they stand up as good work.”
In our round-up of news and notes from the world of collage, we report on Laura Klopfenstein’s collage on the cover of Texas Observer; Portland collagist Kevin Sampsell‘s new book, I Made an Accident; a new journal of poetry and collage by Kolaj Institute; and a series of Collage Artist Residencies taking place in Scotland.
In “A Posthumous Return,” Kelli Bodle writes about how the legacy of Italian Proto-Arte Povera Artist Salvatore Meo may have been eclipsed by Robert Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly.
MJ Connors Davison walks us through how an Exquisite Corpse exhibition became an exquisite community. What began as a World Collage Day project in 2021 became an exhibition at The New Zone Gallery in Eugene, Oregon, USA in 2022.
Jane Laster-Gordon reflects on how her collage series “Gotham City” became an accidental reflection on 9/11 Terrorist Attacks in New York City. “On September 11, 2001, I took an early flight from Toronto to New York. At the exact time the first of the World Trade Center towers was struck, I was in the air and my plane was preparing to land at LaGuardia Airport,” she writes.

A wide-ranging exploration of the dandy and men’s fashion over the past two centuries, from Beau Brummell to hip-hop
Artist/Rebel/Dandy celebrates the pleasures of the sharp-dressed man, from the discreet sophistication of the consummately elegant George Bryan “Beau” Brummell in the early 19th century to the diverse, highly personal flair of the tastemakers who color the landscape of menswear today. Since the word “dandy” came into vogue in London in 1813, it has at times been used to describe someone superficial, flamboyant, and self-indulgent. Instead, the dandy is here shown to employ profound thought and imagination in his self-presentation, fashioning an image that often challenges the status quo and transcends the ordinary. A series of fascinating essays traces the often contradictory definitions and images of the dandy, the history of young men and their clothes in the long 19th century, the exquisite fabrics and tailoring that play an important role in dandy style, and the relationship of black dandyism and hip-hop. In addition, this book features fifteen musings on notable dandies written by individuals who share a kinship with their subject, including Patti Smith considering Charles Baudelaire; a reflection on Oscar Wilde by his grandson, Merlin Holland; Daniela Morera, formerly part of Andy Warhol’s Factory crowd, reminiscing about the artist’s image; and writer Philip Hoare describing the “thrift-shop dandyism” of director John Waters.

If you can’t already tell... i’m up the 2019 version’s ass ;) No, but seriously every one of those actors brought their “A” game and having recently read the book I can say that they all fit the book so well. I also don’t have any of 2017 or the 1970s mini series and just one of 1933. I’m planning on rewatching all of the versions of LW before I get the 2019 version in the mail. So that I can watch all of them from the first to the last. So who knows, this list might change a little.

TCMFF  Home Edition Must Watch List
Hello friends!
I was supposed to be on a plane today to go to my first TCM Film Festival, but stuff happens and then you have a pandemic and everything gets canceled and you have to stay home! ANYWAYS, TCM decided to bring us some joy by playing programming for all of us, giving us the film festival, but at home.
I have decided to list my must watch films for this Home Edition of the festival!
Thursday, April 16th
8 pm: A Star is Born (1954, George Cukor)
Tumblr media
Starring Judy Garland, James Mason, Jack Carson, and Charles Bickford
On TCM’s website, this was listed as the inaugural film for the 2010 TCMFF. It’s also a film that is Judy Garland at her best. Garland lights up the screen as Esther Blodgett/Vicki Lester. This film has fantastic musical numbers, beautiful colors, and is the best starting film for this festival.
11 PM: Metropolis (1927, Fritz Lang)
Tumblr media
Starring Gustav Frohlich, Alfred Abel, Brigitte Helm, and Rudolf Klein-Rogge
If you have never seen a silent film or a German Expressionist film, watch this! Metropolis is the film that aged so well. A futuristic utopia from the lens of the 1920s is very interesting to watch and also some of the themes of this film can be translated to life today. I will say, the film can be described by some as “weird” but I wouldn’t let that stop you from watching it!
Friday, April 17th
2 PM: Eva Marie Saint Live from the TCM Classic Film Festival (2014)
Tumblr media
Eva Marie Saint is one of my favorite classic film actresses. She has class, she has poise, and she is very talented. In 2014, TCM had a sit down with the actress to talk about herself and her films. This is such a treat to see!
3 PM: North by Northwest (1959, Alfred Hitchcock)
Tumblr media
Starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Jessie Royce Landis, and Martin Landau
Another case of mistaken identity and suspense! Hitchcock knew what he was doing when he hired Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint to “sex” up in the screen during the 1950s. Their chemistry is electric. The airplane scene is such an intense watch. And James Mason seems to be good at playing a suave bad guy.
5:45 PM: Some Like It Hot (1959, Billy Wilder)
Tumblr media
Starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe, Joe E. Brown, George Raft, and Pat O’Brien
Men witnessing a crime and then parading as women so they don’t get murdered! What a farce! Let’s be real, the best chemistry in the film is between Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. They play off each other so well. I will say, I do believe Marilyn Monroe was at her best in this film! Need a laugh, watch this!
1:30 AM: Grey Gardens (1975, Albert Maysles, David Maysles, Ellen Hovde, and Muffy Meyer)
Tumblr media
Starring Edith “Big Edie” Ewing Bouvier Beale and Edith “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale
This documentary is fascinating. It is fun but at times absolutely heartbreaking. Big Edie and Little Edie were definitely a fine pair. It is interesting watching the aunt and cousin of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, because they aren’t living in luxury, which would be expected due to their relation. Big and Little Edie are characters that you have to see to believe. The irony is, they are real people and not acting roles.
5 AM: Kim Novak: Live from the TCM Film Festival (2013)
Tumblr media
Kim Novak is so much more than her looks and this interview opened my eyes to how amazing she is as a person as well as an actress.
Saturday, April 18th (AKA MY BIRTHDAY)
6 AM: The Man with The Golden Arm (1955, Otto Preminger)
Tumblr media
Starring Frank Sinatra, Eleanor Parker, and Kim Novak
This is one of the grittiest films from the 1950s. It depicts a heroin addict during their ups and downs. I was honestly surprised this film got made at all during the Production Code Era, but am very glad it did. Sinatra is so raw in his performance and Eleanor Parker creates a complex character as his wife. Of course, Kim Novak is wonderful to watch because she is more than just beautiful, she is an actress. This film really showcases her talent.
1:15 PM: Safety Last! (1923, Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor)
Tumblr media
Starring Harold Lloyd, Mildred Davis, and Bill Strother
Zany antics a plenty! That’s the best description of this film. Harold Lloyd films are always great to watch because he wasn’t afraid to do crazy things to get a laugh. This film has the infamous clock scene too!
2:45 PM: They Live By Night (1949, Nicholas Ray)
Tumblr media
Starring Farley Granger, Cathy O’Donnell, and Howard Da Silva
If you only watch one movie on this list, THIS NEEDS TO BE THE ONE. It’s ironic that it airs on my birthday, because this is one of my favorite films. The story of doomed lovers who try their best to reform from a life of crime to survive wasn’t a new concept, but man, Farley Granger and Cathy O’Donnell make you fall in love with their characters and hope that they somehow, someway make it to their life of happiness together.
10 PM: The Magnificent Ambersons (1942, Orson Welles)
Tumblr media
Starring Joseph Cotten, Dolores Costello, Anne Baxter, Tim Holt, and Agnes Moorehead
This film is another case of a film that got cut down by the studio, and in case you were wondering, Orson Welles was pissed. I would hope and pray one day we all get to see the full version (kinda doubtful), but this film isn’t so bad. I think the all-star cast really makes it worth it!
Sunday, April 19th
6 AM: Jezebel (1938, William Wyler)
Tumblr media
Starring Bette Davis, Henry Fonda, and George Brent
I am not gonna lie, my first viewing of this film enraged me. Henry Fonda’s character made me so mad because he was a jerk. But I have decided I need to rewatch this film and see if my attitudes have changed. This film did so many great things for Bette Davis and Henry Fonda, so we should all give it another (or first) go around. Also this was the film Jane Fonda was born during! Just a fun fact.
3:30 PM: Auntie Mame (1958, Morton DaCosta)
Tumblr media
Starring Rosalind Russell, Forrest Tucker, Coral Browne, Jan Handzlik, and Roger Smith
I want to be Auntie Mame. She is so much fun and so unique and I love it. The costumes are so grand in this film and Rosalind Russell really does a great job of bringing Mame to life. This film is so fun!!!
6 PM: Singin’ in the Rain (1952, Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly)
Tumblr media
Starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O’Connor, and Jean Hagen
This is in my top 5 musicals. This musical always makes me smile and it is one of the few musicals where I know most of the words to the songs. The trio of Kelly, Reynolds, and O’Connor is something magical. Cosmo Brown is also one of my favorite characters in any film (and one of my cat’s namesakes). The film history alone with this film makes it worth watching! JUST WATCH THIS MUSICAL, OKAY?
9:45 PM: The Hustler (1961, Robert Rossen)
Tumblr media
Starring Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie, and George C. Scott
Paul Newman is so cool in general, so he was born for this role. I never knew a movie about pool would have my interest, but here we are. The tension between Newman and Jackie Gleason is so well played and the way the film is shot, you feel like you are in the room with them. Also Piper Laurie does a great performance as the conflicted girlfriend of Newman’s ambitious pool shark.
12:15 AM: Baby Face (1933, Alfred E. Green)
Tumblr media
Starring Barbara Stanwyck, George Brent, and Donald Cook
THIS IS PRECODE HEAVEN! You have a woman who uses sex to get ahead in life and men become entranced, and usually destroyed, by her. Barbara Stanwyck plays her character so well that you have a love-hate relationship with her. She can be cruel, but you understand why she is doing what she is doing.
