Las Vegas, NV
– Members of UNITE HERE’s Culinary and Bartenders Unions have voted to authorize a citywide strike. 25,000 union members participated in two voting sessions throughout the day and 99% voted yes.
Union contracts covering 50,000 union workers expire on June 1, 2018 at 34 casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Las Vegas, including properties operated by MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment Corporation, Penn National, Golden Entertainment, Boyd Gaming, and other companies.
50,000 hospitality employees who are preparing to go out on strike after June 1 include: Bartenders, guest room attendants, cocktail servers, food servers, porters, bellman, cooks, and kitchen workers employed at the casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Las Vegas.
“A strike is a last resort. We want to come to an agreement, but the union and workers are preparing for a citywide strike if contracts are not settled by June 1,” said Geoconda Argüello-Kline, Secretary-Treasurer for the Culinary Union.
“We support innovations that improve jobs, but we oppose automation when it only destroys jobs. Our industry must innovate without losing the human touch. That's why employers should work with us to stay strong, fair, and competitive.”
“I voted yes to go on strike to ensure my job isn’t outsourced to a robot,” said Chad Neanover, a prep cook at the Margaritaville, a Caesars Entertainment property. “We know technology is coming, but workers shouldn’t be pushed out or left behind. Casino companies should ensure that technology is harnessed to improve the quality and safety in the workplace, not as a way to completely eliminate our jobs.”
“I don’t want to go on strike, but I will,” said Adela Montes de Oca, a guest room attendant at the Aria, an MGM Resorts International property. “The company is more profitable than ever because of the hard work we do, and I’m going to keep fighting to make sure that we have a fair share of that success.”
The Culinary and Bartenders Unions are negotiating new contract language to provide greater measure of security for members including workplace safety, sexual harassment, subcontracting, technology, and immigration. In addition, the Union’s economic proposal seeks to provide workers a fair share of the employers’ enormous anticipated cash flows and Trump tax windfalls.
In 1984, thousands of Culinary Union members went on a citywide strike across the Las Vegas Strip for 67 days which crippled in the Las Vegas hospitality industry until contracts were settled.
The Culinary and Bartenders Unions are encouraging Nevada locals, elected officials, political candidates, and tourists to support workers by not patronizing hotels and casinos in case there is a labor dispute on or after June 1, 2018. In an event of a strike, please do not cross picket lines.
The Culinary Union, Nevada’s largest union, maintains www.VegasTravelAlert.org, a website intended as a service for meeting and convention planners and all other travelers who need to know whether labor disputes could affect their plans in Las Vegas.
Labor contracts for the below 34 casino resorts expire midnight May 31, 2018:
ABOUT THE CULINARY UNION:
“Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and Bartenders Union Local 165, Nevada affiliates of UNITE HERE, represent over 57,000 workers in Las Vegas and Reno, including at most of the casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip and in Downtown Las Vegas. UNITE HERE represents 270,000 workers in gaming, hotel, and food service industries in North America.
The Culinary Union, through the Culinary Health Fund, is one of the largest healthcare consumers in the state. The Culinary Health Fund is sponsored by the Culinary Union and Las Vegas-area employers. It provides health insurance coverage for over 143,000 Nevadans, the Culinary Union’s members and their dependents.
The Culinary Union is Nevada’s largest immigrant organization with over 57,000 members - a diverse membership that is approximately 55% women and 54% Latino. Members - who work as guest room attendants, bartenders, cocktail and food servers, porters, bellmen, cooks, and kitchen workers - come from 173 countries and speak over 40 different languages. The Culinary Union has been fighting for fair wages, job security, and good health benefits for working men and women in Nevada for 83 years.”

A Brief History of Henderson NV
calliduselectric.com
service providers understand how important power is to a city and its residents. Such services may respond to calls with varying levels urgency, all of which are affecting and disrupting the daily routine of Henderson locals. While electricity may be important to Henderson today, there was a time in the past when power was extremely vital not only for the city, but for the entire country as well. Unknown to many, Henderson played a major, albeit largely unheralded, role in the country’s WWII efforts. This role also paved the way for Henderson to become Nevada’s second largest city.
Why was Electricity Vital for Henderson in WWII?
War strategists knew that the demand for magnesium exponentially increases during large scale armed-conflicts. Magnesium is an essential component in aluminum alloys for building airplanes. Also referred to as a “miracle metal,” magnesium is also needed for manufacturing flares and ammunitions. With World War II looming, Nevada Senator McCarran convinced then President Franklin Roosevelt to construct a mining company in the state. In September 1941, Basic Magnesium, Inc. broke ground.
Magnesium mining, processing and refining require tremendous amount of energy to heat electric furnaces up to 2,200 °F to produce molten magnesium chloride. Basic Magnesium, Inc. was the main supplier of magnesium during WWII producing some 5,000,000 pounds of magnesium a day. To be able to keep up with the demand, the Henderson plant used 25% of the electricity generated by the Hoover Dam.
Basic Magnesium likewise provided jobs for thousands of Henderson residents, as well as to those in the surrounding areas. At its peak, the mining company was able to produce more than 160 million pounds of magnesium ingots for WWII. Henderson officially became a city in January 10, 1944 as it continued to produce magnesium for the war. This is also the reason why some still say that Henderson was “born in America’s defense.”
Mining Plant Closure in Henderson
After the war, the demand for magnesium dropped and by 1947 the production facilities at Basic Magnesium was no longer required and was shut down. Most of the mining company’s 14,000 workers left the city and enrollment in the local school was reduced to a third. Half of the housing in the town, which were formerly owned by the plant workers, became empty. The United States War Asset Administration offered the city for sale, deeming it as a war surplus.
The Nevada Legislature immediately went into action to save Henderson from becoming war surplus property. The legislature drafted and passed a bill that authorized the Nevada Colorado River Commission to purchase the industrial plants left by Basic Magnesium. By April of 1953, Henderson was incorporated as the city of Henderson. The following month, Henderson elected Dr. Jim French as its first city mayor.
The City of Henderson Today
Henderson is part of the Las Vegas metropolitan area. Originally, the city was only about 13 square miles. It quickly grew in size to about 107 square miles. Upon its incorporation, the city only had about 7,000 residents. The city’s population as of 2017 has grown to more than 300,000, making it the second largest city in Nevada. Its current top industries include hotel resorts and casinos, professional medical services and mining.

Las Vegas, Nevada
While Las Vegas is fondly called as the Sin City because of the proliferation of adult-type of entertainments, this does not mean that it is not friendly for families with children. The residential areas actually offer a suburban type of community with beautiful parks. According to different websites, it is one of the best places to live based on the quality of life scores of residents and the availability of job markets. In terms of the cost of living, expect higher cost of basic commodities in the area because of the influx of tourists. But the expensive prices are balanced by the numerous employment opportunities and higher salary scale.
Fountains of Bellagio
The Fountains of Bellagio is the most photographed area in the Las Vegas strip. It showcases a breathtaking view of the water fountain soaring as high as 460 feet into the air. At night, this will even come to life with more than 4,000 lights and music on the background. This can be an entertainment to look for to on its own. Since this is located just outside the hotel, the entire experience is absolutely free. The fountain show happens every 30 minutes starting from 3 pm until midnight. There are also several restaurants in the area that offers outdoor dining with a nice view of the fountain.
Man Dies in a Collision in Las Vegas
Las Vegas Police announced the death of a 74-year old man as his vehicle collides with 2022 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup in Southwest Las Vegas. According to reports, the crash occurred at the intersection of South Rainbow Blvd and West Windmill Lane. The frontal collision led to severe injuries of the driver which was later on declared dead. Meanwhile the other vehicle’s driver along with a 6-year old passenger only sustained minor injuries. The reason of the crash is still unknown but authorities are looking into the possibility of alcohol use or speeding. This is another reminder for all drivers to be extra careful to safeguard their life and the lives of the people they meet in the road.

Instead of trying to push people to go vegan, I try to educate them. There’s so much information out there, there is absolutely no reason to remain ignorant or turn a blind eye to what’s going on in the animal agriculture and commercial fishing industries. All we can do is learn, be better, and then inspire others. That’s how change will happen. I stopped eating meat in 2012, and didn’t become fully vegan until 2020, so I understand we all need to go at our own pace. Whenever you do decide to open your eyes and your heart to a plant-forward lifestyle, I will be here to help you. ♥️ Join my Free Mentorship Program @VeginnerCooking Ⓥ 𝗩𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴.𝗰𝗼𝗺 🌱 (link in bio) ✨To all of my fellow vegans, comment below with your favorite #VeganBook title & author!!! 📚 📸 Photo taken @cosmopolitan_lv #vegangirls #vegangirlsarethesexiest #veganlife #veganlifestyle #veganbody #veganfitnessmodel #veganfitgirl #veganfit #veganfitness #veganstrongwoman #veganbabe #veganbabes #cosmopolitanlasvegas #vegancoach #govegan #tryvegan #veganinspiration #veganmotivation #veganinspo #veganauthor #plantbasedlife #veganinformation #veganinfluencer #plantbasedlifestyle #veganchoices #veganmodel #veganmodels #vegangirl #veganpodcast (at The Cosmopolitan Hotel Las Vegas, NV) https://www.instagram.com/p/CT4oNEErWdd/?utm_medium=tumblr
