Aladdin Sane - David Bowie

Aladdin Sane, the second track on the 1973 album of the same name, is the introduction of our hero, the “American cousin” of Ziggy Stardust.

The name ‘Aladdin Sane’ is a homophone for ‘A lad insane’

This song is one of Bowie's anti-war ones. Just by looking at the lyrics, you can tell. 

My favorite lyric is "Saddening glissando strings" - glissando is a musical term derived from the French for “to glide”. It means to make a “glide”, or slide, from one pitch to another. There are a lot of glissandos in my Chicago (The musical) music! It's very fun to do :)

The most popular song on this album (Aladdin sane) is probably Lady Grinning Soul. It's definitely my favorite! 

The closing track on Bowie’s 1973 Aladdin Sane, this track is a very romantic piano ballad. It is often cited as being inspired from David’s first meeting with soul singer Claudia Lennear, who is also said to be the inspiration behind the song “Brown Sugar” by The Rolling Stones.

I always struggled with hearing since my high school band days (WEAR EARPLUGS), and what I now realize as Muscle Tension Dysphonia, which absolutely mangled my ability to sing for years. I have been completely relearning since a great vocal teacher (Trina Langthorne) set me straight in 2019. I am far from a golden throat but I am proud of my progress, singing every day is therapeutic and fun!

Lady Grinning Soul by Anna Calvi, covering David Bowie. There are very few Bowie covers I will tolerate but this one blew my mind - she turned it into this femme fatale torch song and the lone piano is so haunting and ethereal.
