i started playing yakuza 0 in August last year, and I've been playing my way through the entire series ever since. it's been a wild ride — a lot of nonsense plot has flowed through and out of my brain, a lot of janky combat, a massive amount of characters i've come to love, and hundreds of warmly empathetic substories that have pressed themselves into my brain. it feels like i've crammed an entire found family into my life, speedrunning through decades of character growth, major triumphs and minor failures. what it all means, in retrospect, i couldn't quite say. the series hasn't had a consistent point of view, except for an increasing melancholy of how life's narrative opportunities narrow with age and poor decisions, of the ways that childhood trauma lives with us forever, the ways that young men are brutalized into something useful for the powerful men at the top—but that's all a shadow passing over the true landscapes of the games, the long period hanging out in arcades or pool halls or drinking in a favorite bar, or singing karaoke alone or with someone. of watching kamurocho and sotenbori shift with the years, of the new cities we've visited and the food we've eaten. i remember the takoyaki place on the corner that got replaced with a gelateria much more than i remember any of the yakuza heavies that have driven the plots of these games, and that may actually be the point?
it's so weird to not have another yakuza game to immediately start playing. i've gotten so used to opening the next game as soon as i finish the previous one that it feels wrong to just be… done, for now? like, what am i to do with myself now? these games have been such a major part of my leisure time this last year. i've still got Ishin, but that's not really the same thing. the faces will be familiar, but the people will be strangers.
it feels right that the man who erased his name was the only one of these that i've actually 100% completed, from achievements to in-game trackers. they've lowered the bar for completion substantially with this latest game, and frankly it feels like an act of grace for people who have played through the entire series. i'm never going to get good at virtua fighter 2, no matter how many times it shows up, so it's nice to not have to get good at everything in order to round everything out. i've already taught myself mahjong for this series, is that not enough? LADG says, yes, it's okay, you've done enough, and i appreciate that tremendously, here at the end of this loooong road.
i spent *50 solid days* this last year doing nothing except playing yakuza games, that's ridiculous. i read every single nero wolfe book in significantly less time than that! this is the problem with doing this sort of run-the-board project for a video game series, it just takes so long to get even a basically thorough experience. running through the entire MCU, including all the D+, Netflix, Hulu, Freeform, and ABC shows, only takes 424 hours, by comparison. you could watch all of it in less time than in took me to get from Y0 to Y4. i read all the nero wolfe books a couple of years back, and i was ripping through those at a book a night. video games are massively more decompressed as a medium, which makes them much harder to approach. i've loved doing this, and really valued the experience, but how do i even begin to recommend someone approach this, when so much of the specific pleasure i get is from seeing these characters and locations grow and change over time? how do you even begin to read a work of that scope? what is even meaningful out of that time to convey to another person? and yet it is meaningful, having lived through it, in the way living in another city is meaningful. i can tell you what i did there, and the important things that happened to me, but the only way to really get it is to move there yourself, and that's a lot to ask of someone.
stats under the cut, if you're curious about just how much time i've spent on each individual game
yakuza 0: 115:45 started 8/10/22, completed 9/7/22
yakuza kiwami: 66:24 started 9/9/22, completed 10/10/22
yakuza kiwami 2: 73:20 started 10/10/22, completed 10/30/22
the majima saga: 2:49 started 10/18/22, completed 10/26/22
yakuza 3: 103:20 started 10/31/22, completed 2/20/23 (with a break from november to february)
yakuza 4: 124:14 started 2/20/23, completed 3/17/23
yakuza 5: 168:17 started 3/18/23, completed 4/27/23
yakuza 6: 76:05 started 4/30/23, completed 5/20/23
judgment: 114:29 started 5/22/23, completed 7/16/23
yakuza like a dragon: 131:31 started 7/16/23, completed 9/2/23
lost judgment: 131:10 (shocking how close this is to YLAD) started 9/17/23, completed 11/4/23
the kaito files: 12:59 started 11/5/23, completed 11/10/23
the man who erased his name: 75:17 started 11/11/23, completed 11/27/23
total time, across the entire series: 1195:40
i benchmarked these against the completionist starts on HowLongToBeat, and i was actually under par that way until about yakuza 4, when my times suddenly got much longer than estimated. what changed? mahjong. i learned how to play mahjong, and that was great (mahjong rules), but it's added dozens of hours to my games, easily, and even with that LADG is the only one of the games where i managed to complete the in-game mahjong objectives. y4 has four separate tournaments you can climb your way to the top of, one for each main character, and i never even got close, but i spent a lot of time trying!

honestly fuck it new brainrot time!!
imagine being isekai'd into the body of the fl's mother, a woman who died when giving birth to her, but her father was a duke of the North, a man who you had a one night stand with.
ranting time bc i'm actually invested in this idea?!
basically the fl is the mc of an 18+ reverse harem, a duke's daughter that was found when she was 13, as her mother ran away before giving birth to her, she was the result of a one night stand.
since reader get's isekaid into the fl's mother's body when the fl was a baby, reader obviously raises the girl, leading the fl to be somewhat dependant on reader??
reader is absolutely terrified of the northern duke bc that man is rutheless to anyone who isn't the fl, so when the beginning of the story starts, reader basically leaves stuff for the fl before running away to the capital and start a new life, hoping to stay in hiding and become practically invisible.
spoiler alert: that went down hill because reader somehow helped one of the emperor's CONCUBINES?? so yeah! reader became a lady in waiting.
the reader, now a lady in waiting for one of the emperor's favorite concubines, you were bound to meet and befriend the love interests, the crown prince, his childhood bestfriend(the villain), and the crown prince's personal knight. they, obviously, get attached to the hip when they met you, like hello?? new mother figure??
now you got three clingy children— wait, and also an obsessive concubine you work for. neat!
the empress catches news of one of the concubines' ladg in waiting befriending her child and gets wary bc are u gonna kill her son?? 🤨 basically you two become friends(more-so one-sided bc the empress falls for you(tfw u got w rizz)) and now you got two obsessed adults!! +the emperor but shh
btw the fl also becomes yandere over reader!! like father like daughter ig💀
you meet the fl and the duke during a banquet where nobles and royals participate in(ladies in waiting are also allowed, as they have to attend to their lady). that's where your life starts to stop being normal(not like it was ever since you became a lady in waiting but shh).

I come from a culture that is absolutely not a literate one, historically, and the more that I see those smug posts of "If you want to be an effective leftist/ally/queer/Good Person you have to READ!!!!! WHOLE!!!!!! BOOKS!!!!" the more that I want to give up on any kind of movement-building and live in a tent in the woods like my ancestors before me.
Long thoughts under the cut
When someone says that learning your theory by listening to what the people around you say is lesser and bad, and that only by reading the words written by far-away or dead Authors and Scholars will you ever become Useful, I wonder how much they can really believe that oral history is a real and valuable thing, or do they secretly sniff that cultures with a long tradition of centralised paper recordkeeping are better than ones which just trusted in storytellers?
I know that I use a lot of words that are very regional and concepts that are often dramatically different to Proper Theory - But they are the words that I learnt from the communities that I really live in, which were really used for decades and which all really developed from needing to name real people and real phenomena that we encountered. You could say "Oh but those words aren't universally understood so why use them" but there is nothing that stops anyone on earth from understanding them: they just have to ask "What does that mean?" And then to really listen to the answer, not to cut it off and say "Oh so ACTUALLY those are just the equivalent of (some other similar phenomena from somewhere else)"
But hey, that requires having a relationship with a person - To actually pay attention to the culture of the person who is telling you something, rather than just trying to absorb the information without the human.
Which is why I keep coming back to storytelling I think - Because the spoken story of a people contains so much more than a written version - Because the nature of HOW the story is told to you-the-audience is as much a part of the message as the words are.
Taking a totally apolitical (ha!) example: here's the story of Dog Bites Man.
If I tell the story to my friend who lives across the road from where it happened, it might be:
"Old Mr Fowler's dog got off the lead and ran down the back of Chucky's nightclub, where it bit one of the tradies"
If I tell it to someone who doesn't live nearby:
"A loose dog ran down a blind alley, and bit a guy who couldn't get away because all the fire doors were locked"
If I tell it to someone who I know really understands their dog breeds:
"This border collie was stressed and bored, so slipped the lead and tried to herd pedestrians, it ended up biting a guy who was digging up a road in the town centre because he couldn't move fast enough."
So if I was writing the story down I'd probably omit some of the information- Some of it is only important if you know about dogs (It's a sheepdog), some only matters if you live locally (Whose dog it was, the name of the club), some only needs to be told if you aren't already aware of the local area (everyone knows where Chuckys Club is, so I don't need to describe the alley) - And for that matter, I might add even more details (Maybe Mr Fowler is a bad dog owner, and I want to emphasise that to push for muzzle and leash laws. Maybe I want to have the building which closes the alley knocked down, so I'm emphasising that it was unsafe. Maybe I want to say that tradies need better training to deal with stray animals on the roadworks, or maybe I'm emphasising that they have a hard job so should be paid more). But, I'd need to be selective, and even if I didn't realise that I was being selective, I'd miss things out based on who I expected the audience to be.
(There is much discussion of this when talking about writing as a minoritised writer - why do I have to put a glossary note or italics when I say chavvi or chingering or ladged up, but not cafe or pasta or tycoon? Who is assumed to be the audience, and who is the afterthought?)
But if I'm telling the story, I will tailor it naturally to the immediate person that I'm speaking to - Which requires a relationship, even if that relationship is as superficial as "I know you know that in England there aren't many feral dogs, so I don't have to explain that this isn't a wild animal, it's a pet or a recent stray".
And why is that a worse way to learn about your culture or your politics, than reading a book about it? Why is it better to learn from someone that you usually don't have a relationship with, than someone that you do?

Are u normal or when u listen to the song Need You Now - Ladg Antebellum, you thought of Alex calling farmer in the middle of night because Evelyn passed in her sleep?
Bonus angst point: u broke up or divorced already with him, but like the song says he called u,
"... Hey, my grandma just passed. It's a quarter after one, I'm all alone ... I.. I really... need you, now ...
I'm sorry... I said I wouldn't call... , but i've lost all control right now... , and i really need you now...
I don't know how i can do without you at this moment, please.., i- i need you ...."
with one of his hand covering his face solemly, wet by tears

Animals, Vol. 14, Pages 278: Integrated Microbiome and Serum Metabolome Analysis Reveals Molecular Regulatory Mechanisms of the Average Daily Weight Gain of Yorkshire Pigs
The average daily weight gain (ADG) is considered a crucial indicator for assessing growth rates in the swine industry. Therefore, investigating the gastrointestinal microbiota and serum metabolites influencing the ADG in pigs is pivotal for swine breed selection. This study involved the inclusion of 350 purebred Yorkshire pigs (age: 90 ± 2 days; body weight: 41.20 ± 4.60 kg). Concurrently, serum and fecal samples were collected during initial measurements of blood and serum indices. The pigs were categorized based on their ADG, with 27 male pigs divided into high-ADG (HADG) and low-ADG (LADG) groups based on their phenotype values. There were 12 pigs in LADG and 15 pigs in HADG. Feces and serum samples were collected on the 90th day. Microbiome and non-targeted metabolomics analyses were conducted using 16S #rRNA sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Pearson correlation, with Benjamini–Hochberg (BH) adjustment, was employed to assess the associations between these variables. The abundance of Lactobacillus and Prevotella in LADG was significantly higher than in HADG, while Erysipelothrix, Streptomyces, Dubosiella, Parolsenella, and Adlercreutzia in LADG were significantly lower than in HADG. The concentration of glutamine, etiocholanolone glucuronide, and retinoyl beta-glucuronide in LADG was significantly higher than in HADG, while arachidonic acid, allocholic acid, oleic acid, phenylalanine, and methyltestosterone in LADG were significantly lower than in HADG. The Lactobacillus–Streptomyces networks (Lactobacillus, Streptomyces, methyltestosterone, phenylalanine, oleic acid, arachidonic acid, glutamine, 3-ketosphingosine, L-octanoylcarnitine, camylofin, 4-guanidinobutyrate 3-methylcyclopentadecanone) were identified as the most influential at regulating swine weight gain. These findings suggest that the gastrointestinal tract regulates the daily weight gain of pigs through the network of Lactobacillus and Streptomyces. However, this study was limited to fecal and serum samples from growing and fattening boars. A comprehensive consideration of factors affecting the daily weight gain in pig production, including gender, parity, season, and breed, is warranted. https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/14/2/278?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

Hi Em, how are you? This is more of a letter but I hope it’s fun! Sorry for the delay but I’m so excited to give you your gift, I have an idea I hope you’ll find fun! Nice Percy Jackson icon by the way, I love the first few episodes. And thank you for adding the trailer ❤️ It sounds so interesting and that one scene where Maia is in the white gown and Thomas is behind her and she looks over her shoulder did something to me lol. I’ll have to check it out! For my own show rec I just started watching Elementary and it is excellent (it also features a super well used Lucy Liu!) I just went back to the fancam and that’s crazy! They’re in love! “I can’t imagine life without you in it” my god!
Also no need to apologize for the messages getting long because this is getting long too! First pick is Selfie, it’s this romantic (towards the end :( ) comedy that’s a remake of My Fair Ladg starring John Cho and Karen Gillan and it’s adorable and funny and the only significant age gap romance I’ve ever truly adored (bc it’s not weird, they’re just bringing new insights to the table but they compliment each other so well!) and then it got canceled on a cliffhanger after one season and it pains me. Here’s a fancam so you get what I mean!
https://x.com/selfieignite/status/1511780782498480130?s=46
I would also bring back The Get Down, which was canceled after one season and was an early Netflix original that genuinely seemed so cool. Lastly, I would bring back We Are Lady Parts, which is this British show about a group of Muslim women in a punk rock band that’s absolutely hilarious. I am hoping that it’s suffering from British tv scheduling and just taking its sweet time to return. I think I’m just leaning towards shows gone too soon but if I had to pick a show that ended perfectly but that I just want more of if I would go Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (but then cut out half of season three because ugh. Do you have a character who joined a show and you just couldn’t stand him? Mine is named Nathaniel.)
Since we’re gearing up towards bitch pack holiday swap I wanted to ask if you had any happy memories with bitch pack this last year that you’re grateful for? I always love our guessing games, they get so silly (and hello to anyone from bitch pack reading this!! <3) — your secret santa, ☃️
bestie do Not apologize for the delay I am glad that u are sending these at all!! I mean ik the server asks for everyone who participates to send them but I still like them <3. so I actually made this icon when entertainment weekly got some hq stills for a preview article, but I held onto it for this exact moment sdghdhg. also the eps were SO GOOD AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! I am not nearly as talented as others in the server but if u want an icon hit me up w who u want! they don't take me too long now since I make them decently often <3. also re artful dodger of course also that scene where maia looks back at thomas Should make u feel some typa way!!! they're *chef's kiss* from ep one (where that scene is lol). also I actually love elementary we used to watch it in my house when it aired on cbs!!! when sherlock and watson finally slept together I was Hollering!!!!!! also tho TOOK U LONG ENOUGH UR SUPPOSED TO BE A GENIUS SHERLOCK!!!!!!!! LIKE SHE'S SO HOT HOW DID U NOT MAKE SHACKING UP W HER PRIORITY #1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! elementary>>>>>> bbc sherlock!!!
I think I watched some of selfie (?) but I will check this fancam situation out to familiarize!! I saw my fair lady w audrey hepburn and I do like that movie and I do love some adaptations!! also I feel u w cliffhanger endings they're the Worst like the oa has such a cliffhanger ending bc it was supposed to be 5 seasons not 2 :(. netflix are snakes for doing us both dirty w cancelling originals of theirs that we loved </3. also will be checking out we are lady parts that sounds incredible and I do love british tv! I have never seen crazy ex girlfriend but I do prefer that shows end when they are good instead of keeping themselves going and becoming bad and I certainly would drop parts of shows (cough cough titans cough cough) if I had been a screenwriter in some shows. also in this house we hate nathaniel (idk him but if u hate him, I hate him)!!!
ooh bpack memories is a good one hmm.....I loved seeing what in the m*tt channel got starboarded without context (if ur a mod don't add me I don't need context jsdgdkjfgkfdhg), the jokes we were making when sc**ter was losing all his clients and the jokes the night that karlie kloss was in the 300s level at eras, kasia's plane drawing after the fact (still absolutely sent me), the bees/honey things, battling the mee6! bot that we did not know could in fact talk to us as a knight in search of the perfect nachos, the tmnt classical art lecture slide, winning the hunger games simulator on the first round despite never hunger gamesing once in my life, when everyone had the same taylor then destiel names/icons, and sending ppl to the brig!! what were urs bestie???
