Lesson 12-18 

Someone is running their hand through my hair... ...It feels like a large hand with a gentle touch.

"...You should've heard how excited Belphie was. He said he'd taken your hand and was drifting off to sleep beside you, when suddenly it felt like you squeezed his hand. He thought that maybe you'd woken up." 

Lucifer sighs as he continues to caress my hair. I can't move my body but I can hear him well. 

"My brothers have been going through an emotionally fraught period lately. Thanks to the fact that you show no signs of waking. Really, what kind of attendant just lies there in bed at a time like this?" 

There's the a bit of scolding in his voice but he sighs again. 

"There are plenty of questions I'd like to ask you, you know. What are you — a human — doing here in the Devildom? How did you get here? Why do you have my ring?" 

He sighs again as I feel my hand being held on his, caressing the Ring of Light on my ring finger. 

"Why would you want to protect us? When you stood there with that grimoire in hand, I was at your mercy. You could've forced me to do whatever you wanted, couldn't you?" 

He chuckled as he tells the tale of his beloved little sister who perished in the Great Celestial War. It hurts to hear about their pain all over again. It happened a long time ago, back when I was still immature and convinced myself that they only looked at me hoping to find Lilith. But I understand now, the pain of losing someone you love and never seeing them again. My heart wants to cry for him, for them. 

I tried reaching for him but I couldn't move yet again. 

"Lilith fell in love with a human." He cups my hand and held it by his face. His warm breath softly tickles my skin.

"Angels are forbidden from interfering in the lives of humans. So to actually fall in love with one is unthinkable. I told her she could never visit the human world again. I tried to convince her, but she wouldn't listen to me. She said that someday the same thing would happen to me. I'd meet someone I loved so deeply that I'd be willing to throw away everything for them. And then I'd finally understand how she felt." 

He goes on on how this love brought chaos to their peaceful realm and their Fall. On how he will keep the truth about Lilith till the end of time and wanting to protect his brothers. 

"Having to carry this secret... it's like a dagger through the heart. I wonder, was it like that for you? All that time hiding the fact that you were human... did you feel the same way I do? I want to know. I want to hear you tell me yourself, Moin..."

He sighs again. He leans into my hand and held it by his cheek.

If only I could, Lucifer. If only I could tell you I came from the future where angels, demons, and humans are steadily getting united. Where you and your brothers are free from the guilt of your past, living with smiles on your faces. I want to tell everything. But I can't. And just as you said, it feels like a dagger stuck on my heart. I grow scared for you and for everyone here. Because I'm here, where I don't really belong. 

"What do I do? How am I supposed to deal with this? The truth is, it's lonely without you around. And I miss you. Wake up, Moin..."

I felt his warm hand cup my cheek and his warm breath by my forehead as he leans to kiss it.

And the light from the ring shines brightly.

Carlos is fighting Charles from behind so we are losing on the people in front of us instead of saving tyres and preparing for double attack later on

Checo went wide but could return to track, he avoided Haas/VCARB battle in front

Kevin investigated for leaving the track and gaining advantage, then it's deemed no penalty for that

Carlos pushed Charles off track while George is already 2 seconds away as we fight inside the team

Carlos pushed George wide as well to overtake him, I guess it is allowed now

5s penalty for Oscar for forcing another driver off the track

Yuki is asked to return position to Oscar probably, it didn't seem like he should

Lando moved under braking and almost made Charles dnf, Charles reported it

Saturn being the signifactor of the 7th shows an authorative person, a serious person, someone who's older than you and has some serious life experience, or baggage, depending on how you see it, especially with that Pluto there. The person is driven, opinionated, but not necessarily good at expressing themselves tactfully despite all their experience. They likely live a stable life and take pride in their stability, especially financial stability. This is not to say they cannot joke around, but in essence this person is more serious and thinks deeply about a variety of topics. They do have a softer, sweeter side, but that comes by quite rarely.

Mighty Nein Ability Checks, or, who’s good at what

All data from CritRoleStats, and verified by checking race/class info as needed so this is just a compilation/summary of skills.

All info based on L13 stats; at L17 any proficiency bonuses will go up by 1 and therefore expertise bonuses (which Veth and Beau have) go up by 2. This also assumes that Beau is wearing the headband of intellect (brings her intelligence to a 19) and Caleb has the stone of good luck (+1 to all ability checks).

Summary:

Beau is best at/tied for best in the group at acrobatics (+10), athletics (+10), history (+14), investigation (+14), and religion (+9).

Caduceus is best at/tied for best in the group at animal handling (+5), insight (+10), medicine (+10), perception (+10), and survival (+5).

Caleb is best at/tied for best in the group at arcana (+11), nature (+6), and persuasion (+9).

Fjord is best at/tied for best in the group at deception (+10), intimidation (+10), and performance (+5).

Veth is best at/tied for best in the group at acrobatics (+10), sleight of hand (+15), and stealth (+15). She is also the best with thieves’ tools (+15) which is the tool proficiency that tends to come up most.

Jester is best at/tied for best in the group at animal handling (+5), medicine (+10), and survival (+5).

Yasha is best at/tied for best in the group at survival (+5). Also worth noting that she has a +9 in athletics, a +6 in investigation, and a +5 in perception, ie, survival is not Yasha’s strongest skill, whereas all the other party members are best in the group at at least one of their strongest skills.

Acrobatics: No one has a negative dex score, so Veth and Beau are tied as both the most dexterous party members and as the only party members with proficiency in this skill, with a +10 each (which will go up by 1 at L17). Meanwhile, Fjord’s got a zero. Jester has +4, Yasha has +3, and Caleb and Caduceus each have +2.

Animal Handling: As mentioned, Jester and Caduceus take it as the wisest members of the party. Fjord has a -2 (this will be a theme; Fjord is a man with a very particular set of skills and also his second-highest stat is constitution, which is not associated with any abilities but is very much associated with not getting poisoned/frozen/etc) which may explain his difficulties with wildlife. Beau and Caleb each have +4, Veth has +1, and Yasha has a zero.

Arcana: unsurprisingly Caleb is the only person officially trained in this, and has a +11. Caduceus meanwhile has a -1. The rest is raw intelligence so Beau has a +4, Veth has a +3, Fjord has a +2, and Jester and Yasha have +1 each.

Athletics: The sentinel girlfriends have it with +10 and +9 from Beau and Yasha respectively (Beau has expertise despite no strength bonus, Yasha is proficient). Caduceus, who much like Fjord is also a man with a very particular and very different set of skills, has a zero (although worth noting as a firbolg he can technically carry more than anyone else in the group). Fjord has a +6 thanks to his sailor background, Veth is proficient with a +5, Jester has a +3 from her raw strength, and Caleb has +1 thanks to the stone of good luck.

Deception: Fjord has +10 and Caleb is right behind with a +9, as the charismatic liars within the group - both are proficient. Veth and Yasha are tied for last with -2. Beau and Jester are also both trained in deception, with a +6 each; Caduceus has a +3 but as we know does not like to use it.

History: Beau and Caleb are the only two trained in history, with a +14 for Beau (Cobalt Soul expertise) and a +11 for Caleb. Caduceus again has a -1. It’s just raw intelligence again, so +3 for Veth, +2 for Fjord, and +1 each for Jester and Yasha.

Insight: Caduceus’s skillset shows here, with +10 to insight. Beau and Caleb are both proficient and have high wisdom scores and have +9 each. Fjord’s lack of wisdom shows up again with a -2. Meanwhile, Veth is proficient and has a +6, Jester isn’t proficient but is very wise with a +5, and Yasha has a zero.

Intimidation: Fjord and Caleb continue their race to the top of magnificent bastardry with +10 and +9 respectively. The Nein are otherwise a remarkably unintimidating group with both Veth and Yasha at -2 (although house rules on CR have in the past been that if intimidation is specifically via physical threats, barbarians can sometimes make them with their strength score instead, which would give Yasha a +4 in that particular scenario). Other than that, Caduceus is hilariously the next most intimidating just based on charisma, with +3, and Beau and Jester are tied with +1 each.

Investigation: The Mighty Nein are extremely good at investigation on the whole. Beau and Veth top the list as they both have expertise; Beau has +14 and Veth +13. Caduceus, is again, distracted by moss with a -1 (but will have his day with perception). Caleb is also extremely good, with a +11 thanks to proficiency and maxed-out intelligence. Fjord and Yasha are also quite good thanks to proficiency, with a +7 and +6 respectively. Jester is, like Caduceus, more about the perception than investigation, and has a +1. Note: Beau has a bonkers 29 passive investigation score thanks to Observant.

Medicine: Team cleric is tied as both are proficient and wise as fuck with +10 each. Fjord, despite technically being the third strongest healer in the group now, has a -2 (this is why paladins and bards with low wisdom are amazing and hilarious). No one else is trained in medicine so Beau and Caleb are tied with +4, Veth has a +1, and Yasha a +0.

Nature: As mentioned this is a straight intelligence score plus any items that enhance ability checks, so Caleb has a +6, and Caduceus, a cleric of the nature deity, a -1. Beau has a +4, Veth a +3, Fjord a +2, and Yasha and Jester each a +1.

Perception: The Mighty Nein is reasonably perceptive as well! Caduceus and Caleb are both trained and fairly wise, so they have a +10 and +9 each. Veth is meanwhile the least perceptive with +1, as the two party members with lower wisdom scores are each trained in perception. Jester and Yasha are tied with +5 (Jester isn’t trained but is wise, Yasha isn’t wise but is proficient), Beau has a +4 (not proficient, wise), and Fjord has a +3 (proficient, not wise). Worth noting that Beau’s observant feat grants her a +5 bonus to passive perception, so while active perception is +4, her passive perception score is 19 (below Caduceus’s 20, but since the stone of good luck probably doesn’t apply passively, above Caleb’s 18).

Performance: no one’s trained so it’s a charisma contest that Fjord wins with a +5 and Veth and Yasha lose with -2 each. Caleb has +4, Caduceus +3, and Beau and Jester +1 each.

Persuasion: Thanks to his recent feat at L12 Caleb just shot to the top of this with +9. Veth is proficient, so Yasha takes the low-Charisma spot with -2. Jester is trained in persuasion so has a +6, Fjord is charismatic but untrained with a +5, Veth and Caduceus are tied with +3 thanks to her background and his charisma, and Beau has a +1.

Religion: Her education through a religious institution means Beau wins with a +9. Hilariously, despite being two of the deity-affiliated characters, Jester and Yasha are tied for last with a +1 apiece. Caleb has a +6 from his intelligence, Caduceus is proficient and so has a +4, Veth has a +3, and Fjord has a +2.

Sleight of Hand and Stealth: Grouping the Rogue Skills together since only two characters do not have the same score in each. Anyway, Veth unsurprisingly takes the day with maxed-out dex and expertise; she is unable to get below 25 in these thanks to reliable talent and her +15 in each. Fjord meanwhile has a zero in both. In second place in stealth, but not sleight of hand, we have Beau with +10; in second place in sleight of hand but not stealth we have Jester with +9 (each proficient in that skill). Beau and Jester then trade off for third place (+4 to stealth for Jester, +5 to sleight of hand for Beau). Yasha is next with a +3 in both, and Caleb and Caduceus each have +2 in both.

Survival: It’s a three-way tie, with Yasha’s proficiency making up for her lack of wisdom but putting her equal with the clerics; all have a +5. Fjord is again lacking in wisdom with a -2 and has decided to survive via having almost as many HP as his barbarian pal instead. Beau and Caleb are again tied with +4 each, and Veth has a +1.

Bonus: thieves’ tools

Veth obviously wins, as, well, the thief, with a +15 as well as the ability to do this all via mage hand. Beau has a +10 thanks to her criminal background; no one else is likely to use or own thieves tools but it’s a dexterity contest at that point, so give them to Jester and don’t give them to Fjord.

Eighteen were born and survived (to this point when I’m posting this- February 10, 2021). Eleven are males, two are unknown genders, five are females. 

Now, we’ve lost 15 females over the course of 10 years and have only gained FIVE in that same time period.

Now that we’ve looked at the births and deaths, lets look at the current living population, shall we?

J pod has 10 adult females, (2 post-reproductive); 3 young females; 2 adult males; 8 young males; 1 unknown gender.

K pod has 7 adult females (2 post-reproductive); 1 young female; 7 adult males; 2 young males.

L pod has 15 adult females (5 post-reproductive); 3 young females; 6 adult males; 9 young males; 1 unknown gender. 

Total Males: 15 adult, 18 juvenile

Total Females: 23 reproductive, 9 post reproductive, 7 juvenile 

Total Unknown Genders: 2

Now, that may seem like a good number of females, but we have to keep in mind that they need to produce healthy, living, viable, FEMALE calves to keep this population growing. While all calves are loved and cherished in this population, we need more females. This population is on a downhill trend that can NOT LAST NINE YEARS WITHOUT ENOUGH FOOD.  “When the whales starve, their pregnancies fail. Southern Resident females used to give birth once every five years, just like females in other killer whale populations. But their average birth frequency has dropped to about once every ten years.“ [x]

For anyone who still might not be getting the picture, here. I have a picture for you. This is the population census that the Center for Whale Research updates on December 31 and July 1 each year. 

[x] Do you see the trend? It’s falling. This population was decimated by the capture era (1960s-1970s) and is now continuing to struggle FIFTY YEARS LATER. 

Another point: Reducing whale watching will NOT HELP. Whale watching companies help keep recreational boaters away from the whales and help inform them on the laws. They also report sightings and help keep population tabs. If a whale isn’t looking good, they can report that. If they didn’t see a whale for multiple encounters in a row and the CWR hasn’t been able to get out with them, they can let CWR know. This is a community effort, tracking and monitoring the SRKW. Whale Watch boats also ensure that, when Sound Watch (which mostly operates off the West side of San Juan Island) is not around, that local recreational boaters follow the Be Whale Wise guidelines and keep their distance from the Southern Residents. 

“The Southern Residents pulled through the shooting era and pulled through the capture era, but if Ken is right, they will not pull through the conservation era. They are long-lived animals, so they will still be here—yet they will be gone...“We’re at the point—we’re past the point—of no return.”“ [x]

I appreciate Rep. Mike Simpson’s efforts to try to breach the Lower Snake River Dams, but the time to act is now. We are watching extinction happen before our very eyes. Breach the dams in 2021! NO FISH, NO BLACKFISH! “What will we lose if we let the Southern Residents go extinct?” “Our minds.” [x]
