Nowhere to Run
Dazai slipped into the new office, his eyes moved over everyone. For a moment, he wondered if he would be able to do what Odasaku wanted of him. To live in the light when everything feels like he belongs in the dark.
The people were simply too friendly trying to make him part of the group. So Dazai does what he does best, he placed on his mask and makes himself the clown of the group. As long as he could keep everyone laughing then maybe life wouldn’t be that bad.
Not like in the end.
To leave the person he still loved with everything in him. He wished that he could have bought Chuuya here with him. It would have done him good.
He jumped slightly when Kunika slipped up behind him. “What are you working on?” There was an impatient sound in his voice that raised Dazai’s hackles. But he kept it off his face.
It is only the first day here, he can’t go out and show them how he truly is. The monster that still lurks beneath his skin, waiting to break free. But he pushed it off. The man didn’t know the danger he was standing this close to.
So Dazai just continued with the day, smiling and speaking with the new people. His eyes moved to Rampo now and again. The man was too smart for his good and Dazai couldn’t help but fear that he would see through his masks soon.
So he did what he did best, made everyone's lives interesting with his jokes. And trying to do his paperwork even though it is tedious. Just enough not to get fired.
Getting fired will let him lose the whole point of why he was doing it.
The days started to blur slightly together, Dazai swallowed the nervousness away, knowing that they will never really get better. He skids to a halt in front of the door, wishing that he could just get his heart rate back under control.
Today would have been a good day to try and off himself again, but… He shook his head slightly as he opened the door. Not yet, they haven’t seen him at his worst yet and it would be better if they never do.
He knew that there is no way that he would be able to keep up this mask for a much longer time, but at the same time, he just wanted to keep on trying. When the pain gets too much… Well, he doesn’t know how the new boss would react.
If it is anything like it was in the mafia, he rather just wait it out. The punishment, a shiver run down his spine.
A hand on his shoulder made him jump slightly. He gave Kunikda a tired look. Unsure of what the man wanted.
“Come,” The other was clear as day.
So Dazai just followed the man to the small kitchen. His hands twitch slightly as the urge to scratch at the skin almost overwhelmed him.
“Are you alright?” The worry in the voice made him stop. Kunikida gave him a look that clearly showed he wouldn’t appreciate it if there is lies in his story.
Dazai was silent for a few moments unsure of what he can say. If he tells them the truth, well he couldn’t. So a lie.
“Listen we can all see that something is bothering you. I don’t know what you went through, only that the circumstance is special. But if you need an ear anyone here will listen.” Kunikida tapped his pen slightly against the counter.
He wasn’t even sure why he is the one that is doing this.
Dazai looked to the floor, knowing that there isn’t a place he could turn to. But to talk about feelings made him feel even sicker than he was already feeling.
“It is just a bad day. I have them quite regularly. And I am trying, but today is especially a bad day.” Dazai didn’t have a clue on how to explain what he was feeling.
The only one that truly understood was his Chibi and Dazai wasn’t truly sure how he was able to read his moods as he did.
“How do you normally handle it?” Kunikida immediately went for something that would be able to help, not knowing that there is no answer.
Dazai could only shrug. Without anything, he pulled his sleeves even more over his bandaged arms. Not knowing that Kunikida saw the movement.
“Alright, if you need a chat just let me know..” He placed a hand on Dazai’s shoulder for a second. Guilt formed in his stomach when he felt the faint recoil.
Dazai was silent as he made his way back to his table. His mind was deep in thought. Hands moving over the paperwork, without even nothing what he was writing the report on.
Everything is on simple autopilot.
The time paced so slowly.
“Dazai may I see you for a moment in my office.” Yosano’s voice was quiet as she pulled him away from his work.
“I am a little bit busy at the moment Yosana-san.” Dazai could feel the sudden effect of fear almost overwhelming him, but he made sure to keep his features schooled.
They didn’t need to see the fear. It has nothing to do with them.
“It won’t be long, it is just for a check-up.” There was a firmness in her voice that persuade him to move.
He forced himself to keep the thoughts out of his mind, this isn’t the same as the Mafia. He was saved here.
When the door closed behind them Dazai turned to face her, his face blanks as he looked at her.
“This has something to do with this morning.” His voice was dead as he muttered the words.
She would have come on day one to him if she needed to do a check-up not so long after the fact.
“Yes. Can I see your arms, please?” The way she said it made it clear that it was more of an order than a question.
“There is no need for that Yosano. I am perfectly fine.” Dazai kept his voice steady even though all he wanted to do was hide.
There was silence in the room for a few seconds. “I know what Mori did, not to you specifically just from personal experience. And believe me when I tell you, I just want to help. You don’t need to suffer on your own.” There was sadness in her eyes when she said it.
Dazai just gave her a tired look. “My arms are badly scarred, I would prefer that you don’t see them.”
“Are you injured at the moment?” She easily ignored the part about the scares. Everyone in the mafia has some form of scar, she knows that first-hand.
“It doesn’t matter. I have it handled.” Dazai just wanted to walk out. This was too much. It felt like he was being attacked from inside and outside. He didn’t know what to make of these people.
Why do they care?
“If you are injured, let me help. It will just be between us I promise Dazai. You are safe here.” Yosano reached a hand palm up at Dazai.
It was now up to him if he wanted the help. Whatever it is, she was sure that the agency would be able to help at least a little bit, as long as they continue to search for the signs.
“You don’t have to run anymore Dazai. It is okay to get some rest every once in a while.” How many nights didn’t she wish that someone would be there for her after everything?
And for him? Well, it was no secret in the Mafia that he was Mori’s favourite. So all she can do for now was to show him that he could trust them.
There is nowhere else to run. Now he needs to face his past head-on.

Reading the 'synopsis' for this movie on IMDb and Netflix, and expecting that story, leaves you in a bit of a "did I turn on the wrong movie?" shock for the first bit of this movie. I mean, eventually it does turn to that, but the first like 20-30 minutes has seemingly nothing to do with that (of course, eventually it sorta ties together, in a 'it's the people that matter, not the events' sort of way), but yeah ... confusion.
And then, somehow, after that, it becomes even more frustrating when things develop super slowly and it turns out to be one of those annoyingly stupid and preachy family dramas (a 90s Bollywood staple), led by Dilip Kumar and, even more annoyingly so, the mother.
I mean, Bollywood - especially then - loved the whole 'family' angle and the 'devout wife in face of a jackass husband' thing, so obviously they introduce her as doing a Karva Chauth fast/festival for the husband that threw her out and ignored her and their son. Worse yet, though, is that flashback scene in the courtyard - the one with the death - where she just hams on to fucking annoying levels while they're fighting over a gun. Almost got her son killed in the process too, no less. Because "he betrayed me and treated me like shit, but I must still worship him and you must worship him as a result too," or something stupid like that. And before that (chronologically after) where she slaps the shit out of her son for standing up to his uncle after said uncle humiliated Rekha's character in front of everyone. And also when she, in the scene with the confession, won't fucking shut up about "no, he didn't do it." Or, back at the courtyard, after the deed is done, the whole "no, no, you can't admit it because I can't live without you." You're his mother! Stop being so fucking dramatic!
Honestly, for all the absurd stupidities in the movie (the songs - god, the songs; Gulshan Grover trying to blackmail his wife - wife? - into committing murder for him; Rekha's leg; the horrific editing, especially during the court scenes, but also that scene where it's night/dark out and then when she throws the gun into the ravine it's daylight and then it shifts back to them and is dark again), the mother is the part that literally almost makes the whole thing unwatchable. She's just that damn annoying (which, I realize, is probably insane to say because that's like every 90s Bollywood movie, and I grew up watching/loving those). But god, she's so annoying - literally that courtyard scene where they're fighting and she's just yelling made me literally curse at the movie. I was that annoyed by it.
I know they're bad, but when Kunika gets tricked into naming Gulshan the killer and then learns the truth - the sadness that they both convey with their acting upon realizing what she's done, it almost makes you feel for them. Like, yes, evil and he murdered other people and she's clearly bad, but like, their sadness seemed so real. Which makes sense, he's about to go to jail, but still - you almost feel for them. Even more so after spending two hours intermittently having to hear the mother.
Mukul Dev as the lead actor - interesting. He unfortunately gets bogged down by horrific songs (if you want to call them that) and his mother/family drama (mostly the mother's drama, it feels like - she causes/creates more drama than everyone else combined) and that really weird love story between him and Mamta Kulkarni which is made very awkward early on when her father refers to them as a perfect "brother/sister" relationship (it's a joke, of course, but still... really?).
That first song, man - it was less a song and more just 'words said while music played in the background.' The shit you have to sit through to watch a whodunnit ... sometimes, you almost start wondering if it is really worth it. (No worries, it is. Most of the time.) And that damn mother, yo. Pain - pure pain.
