Some Halo sketches I’ve been doing at work, figured posting them would be better than not !

i went through halo 5 again. the found family. it's getting to me.

kelly offering encouragement at random on the field. linda knowing all the facts and providing them when prompted. fred's deadpan inquiries and offhanded remarks at random. the silent mutual trust between all of them. not needing to talk all the time, they always know what the others are thinking. john expressing more around his family, even if he doesn't voice everything he's thinking. kelly, linda, and fred not knowing what going to meridian means, but pledging themselves to follow john into what could be a life-threatening situation because it's john. it's their brother. and they'd follow him anywhere.

the fact they're literally remarked to be family. the fact that if you pause long enough before going to confront cortana, kelly, linda, and fred all offer assurance and support ("chief?" "having second thoughts?" "we're here for you.") no snide remarks or comments between them - no real hostility, why would there be? the fact that linda goes to stand in front of john when they see cortana. the comment on the use of olly olly oxen free ("we haven't used that signal in years.") the way they huddle around john when he comes out of that message from cortana on argent moon. the fact they don't question what he saw for a second.

you know what might've been better narrative for Halo 5?

Instead of Spartan Locke, what if it was someone from blue team? Like the whole beginning mission is them helping Chief and then he gets the 'vision' from Cortana or whatever. And everyone just???? goes along with him, which is SO sweet I am not complaining

But narratively, people were so jarred by having like,,, zero connection to this random spartan and his team. (I thought the banter was funny from the others but like...)

It would have been a much richer story if one of them split off from Chief in their mind,,, trying to stop/help? a friend? that they loved?? as opposed to "random spartan cop trying to do cop things/just doing what he's told"

we spend half the game playing as a guy we have.... zero emotional connection to it and have... no real want/desire to play as

I just think it would have been better to explore the internal conflict a bit more from blue team (they do address it, slightly, but they could have addressed it more) and by having them split off to maybe join Locke (introduce Locke later) then you can flesh out Locke himself as a device to be like empathetic (because we know he is) but try to push this blue team member to "continue to do the right thing and bring Chief in"

So not too many of these fit how I feel about Linda. I absolutely love her and I feel like she is probably one of the only things standing between Fred and death. She’s also FUCKING beautiful. I adore the fact that she acts as the quite older sister and most cases and makes sure everyone is safe. Her default is protector mode and despite not minding being alone she’s still a caring person. She is MUCH MUCH more than her lone wolf label. I’ve also always thought she was close with Fred and helps him through shit, especially because my dude has hit his head a bit too much. I know it’s the game that shall not be named but there’s some evidence for that in Halo 5 (other lore places too but I’d have to find it). And I’ve always wondered what goes in her head most of the time. Did it take her time to become as focused as she is? And was her distance from her emotions constant or did she develop it? Her interacts with Kelly are always fun too, they kind of egg each other on which is always cool. ALSO I’d be upset if anything happened to Linda but honestly not near as upset as if anything happened to Fred or Kelly. Partly because I feel like Linda has plot armor unlike anything the halo universe has ever seen. Plus she’s Linda and she has to stick around to make sure Fred doesn’t do something too stupid. I also think it’s funny that everyone is constantly like “oh she’s so pretty!” I mean I’d have the same reaction but the duality of super pretty woman and deadly killing machine is great

Under my Brown_Coat profile I have 22, under Space_Dweeb 4.

(I made a separate account way back when because Space_Dweeb was my holdout from FFN, but when I decided that I wanted to just bite the bullet and start writing cute shippy stories I was afraid of associating it with my "serious" works. I know it's dumb. I lead a double life. I am a fraud and a charlatan.)

What fandoms do you write for?

Pretty much exclusively Halo. I wrote a story for the Illuminae Files a little while ago because I read that trilogy this spring and it changed the chemical balance of my brain and hasn't let me go since. I also write some for the Artemis Fowl fandom because by golly somebody is going to keep the Holly Short/Trouble Kelp tag alive!

What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Promise - The only in-universe John/Cortana ship that I've ever written.

Serenity - A Halo/Firefly crossover in which Blue Team are made into space cowboys and I love it.

Halo: Homecoming (formerly titled Welcome Home) - My most bestest creation. The first actual story I ever wrote to completion.

Twenty-ish Days - A series of Halo one-shots as a summer follow up to my other story, Twelve Days (which was a series of one-shots counting down the twelve days of Christmas)

Take Care of Each Other - Another entry on the list of "Why This Dude Should Not Be Allowed To Name Things." Anyhow, it's - you guessed it - a series of one-shots. This time they are all focused on the Fred-104/Kelly-087 ship because I have shipped those two since I first found the Halo novels in middle school and I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I let that tag slip quietly into that good night.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Comments are an uncomfortably large portion of my self-esteem, particularly as a writer of dimestore trash fics. I definitely respond to comments, because I'm desperate to keep people commenting.

What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I angle heavily toward the bright-and-happy side of things. Personally think that there's too much angst in the world without me adding to it.

Having said that, the last chapter of Twenty-ish Days dealt with some angst and some character death that I won't spoil here on the off-chance that someone may read this and feel inspired to go find out for themselves. Other than that... maybe Mister Zhordee? It's a Halo-fied retelling of the song Mr Shorty by Marty Robbins, which has a decent touch of angst to it I suppose.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Again, I lean toward the happy endings naturally so this is kind of a tough one. In general though, I'd say my dumb college AU series The University of Northern South Carolina because every one of those has been happy.

Do you get hate on fics?

Not really. On some of the stuff I still bother to cross-post to FFN I have gotten some weird comments from people who didn't understand the universe I was building in my Halo/Firefly crossover, but other than that anyone who's bothered to leave a comment has been very pleasant.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Nope. I like to keep that level of intimacy just between my wife and me.

Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Serenity, the Halo/Firefly crossover I've been slowly chipping away at for some time now. I'm also (spoilers?) kicking around an idea of a DnD crossover just for the fun of it all.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

No. I did get a meme stolen once though.

Nuh uh.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I co-wrote Halo Fractured Glass: Fireteam Cutlass with a friend of mine. We made a Spartan pirate crew. A plentitude of both kicks and giggles were had.

What's your all-time favorite ship?

Fred/Kelly probably. Or Han/Leia. Or Fred/Daphne. Man, I don't know. I just love love I guess.

What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

One time, for no reason at all, I looked up Harry Potter fanfiction. I have avoided it forever because I actually like the established relationships in the universe and detest anything that implies a romantic connection between Hermione and Draco, so it's a pretty clear no-fly zone for me. However, during this one occurrence I somehow stumbled upon a ship of Katie Bell and Oliver Wood, read all of the stories with that tag, and then wrote ~70% of a one-shot of my own for the pair. Will most likely never finish it, because I really don't have much reason to do so.

What are your writing strengths?

I've been told (by kpmh2001, one of my all-time favorite authors and people) that I have somehow harnessed a talent in writing cute fluffy stories. Personally I like to think that I'm good at writing action sequences, but I have no outside information to corroborate that.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Keeping a coherent plot, and keeping my focus for more than a single chapter at a time. I'm absolute garbage at it.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I speak fluent Portuguese (lived in Brazil for two years in my late teens/early 20s) so I'm confident with that. I can also understand Spanish, but every time I try to speak or write it still comes out in Portuguese so I end up relying pretty heavily on Google to fix my errors there.

First fandom you wrote for?

I think I have at least a dozen notebooks with Clone Wars fanfiction strewn throughout my parents' house. I'm a Star Wars man at heart, even though I don't ever write anything in that universe.

Favorite fic you've ever written?

Already said it, but Halo: Homecoming takes this spot again. It probably doesn't hold up as well as I like to think it does, but being my first ever success at writing an actual story with plot and motivation and a concrete ending has cemented it in my personal hall of fame.

Sorry Covenant, your asses are about to be kicked to kingdom come; with father and child both being capable spartans, there's little that they could conquer.

Originally, they weren't going to enlist in the fourth spartan program at all. They wanted to live a life away from the war, which John full supported since he didn't want them to enlist either. He's seen his fair share of death and carnage, he didn't want his child to grow up in the same gruelling environment. But fate was a cruel master, and Chief lost his S/O to a covenant attack.

This caused their child to seek vengence against the Covenant for what they've done, but John, despite his grief and combating his own depression at the time, still refused to allow them to sign up.

Both father and child battled each other in a heated argument. Witnesses say that John had slowly began to raise his voice, something's never done before in the history of his career. What's more astonishing, their child remained fearless against their father. They stood their ground against the famous spartan; John's title, height, or prowess didn't scare them, if anything, it made them more determined.

Eventually, John had to leave the argument to gather his bearings in his private chambers. His mind was in shambles. All he wanted to do was spare his child from the brutality of life, he didn't want them to meet a untimely end. They still had so much to live for.

It took Master Chief a long time before he came to them with an answer. He'll allow them to sign up for the program, only if him and his commanding officers allowed them to be stationed on Blue Team.

They agreed, and seeing as it is the literal Master Chief the UNSC was seeing, they complied and allowed Chief's child to be apart of Blue Team.

Needless to say they were estatic. They quickly signed up, and after the modifications and training had been completed, they were suited for their armor. Wearing it fit like a glove, it was if they were meant to don it.

They knew their mother would be proud of them, and even though John was initially against the idea, a piece of him found pride in it as well.

As for the Covenant? Well, they were fucking terrified.

Both child and father complimented each other's strength and weaknesses. Where one was, the other wasn't too far behind, and seeing as the child was a freshly made spartan, they were nimble, swift, and deadly.

It didn't take long for them to carve out their own little reputation within the UNSC ranks. They completely mission after mission, battling grunts, elites, and even Jiralhanae.

More than once did they battle opponents one and one. Against all the possible odds, they used their wits to overpower their enemy. Their speed was only matched by Kelly, and even then, sometimes Kelly struggled up to keep up with the spitfire.

John was definitely surprised at how natural his child fit into the role of a spartan. If you told him ten years prior that their child would be one of the best spartans in the UNSC, he'd likely stare you down in disbelief.

Just... something about the thrill of fighting came naturally to the child. It was exhilarating, dangerous, and dare they say even fun. What doubled onto the whole thing is that for every covenant member they kill, the human colonies on various worlds become just a bit safer from a potential invasion.

For Blue Team, they all took family roles for the kid.

Kelly acted as the aunt with a dry sense of humor; they both cracked jokes with each other and laughed over a good cup of tea or coffee. John saw Kelly as an absolute menace because of this.

Linda was admittedly the haredst to get attached too, due to her general lone wolf nature. Despite that, she looked after the child like her own, teaching them how to snipe with killer accuracy, and teaching them how to conceal their emotions.

Fred was most definitely the silent, yet enjoyable uncle. John's often goes to them when they have to rant or get their feelings out of their system, either through talk or sparring. Fred always listens to them and depending on what they need, either comfort or words of wisdom.

John appreciates all of what his brother and sister do for them, but most importantly, he was proud of what his child has become.

He only wishes his lover were here to see it all.
