The Largest Ancient Floor Mosaic in Turkey Uncovered
The structure with the largest floor mosaic in Cappadocia and Central Anatolia Region was unearthed during the excavations carried out in Örenşehir District of İncesu district of Kayseri province, located in the center of Türkiye.
During ongoing excavations, new mosaics were unearthed from the villa, which is estimated to have been built in the 4th century.
The excavations are carried out under the direction of Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University, Department of Art History, Lecturer Dr Can Erpek.
Kayseri Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism, Şükrü Dursun, stated that the excavation began three years ago and that “the structure is expanding every year.” The initial assessment of the mosaic area, which was 300 square meters, has now reached up to 600 square meters.”
Stating that the excavations carried out with the support of Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality continued in an area of approximately 4 thousand square meters, Dursun continued his words as follows:
“In our assessments, we have come to the conclusion that this place was built in the 4th century. According to the findings, there are also traces dating back to the 3rd century and beyond. The quality craftsmanship used in the floor mosaics suggests that this place was used as a very important villa in its era.”
“In the area identified as the reception hall, a Latin inscription was found. In addition to that, Greek inscriptions were also uncovered. Geometrically decorated mosaics are predominantly present here. We have reached the end of our excavations for this year. Hopefully, our work will continue next year.”
The excavation director, Can Erpek stated that the structure continued to be used during the Byzantine period and after the Turks came to Anatolia.
He said, “This place has approximately 33 rooms, spread over a very large area, and is a high-level residence. We have not yet fully reached the boundaries of this residence. It has highly valuable floor mosaics. In the Central Anatolia Region, which includes the Cappadocia region, we do not see such a large residence with floor mosaics. In Cappadocia, during the Roman and Byzantine periods, we generally know about imperial properties. Here, we have encountered the name ‘Hyacinthos’ in the inscriptions. We consider this name to belong to an administrator. When the data becomes clearer, we can more confidently say that it was the residence of an important figure serving in imperial property.”
Stating that Kayseri resembles an open-air museum, Metropolitan Mayor Memduh Büyükkılıç stated that they supported 6 archaeological excavations in different parts of the city.
Büyükkılıç said, “The mosaics unearthed during the excavations here once again emphasized that Kayseri is the cradle of civilization in Anatolia,”.

An LGBTI+ rights activist and member of the Workers’ Party of Turkey, TIP, Iris Mozalar, was arrested on Thursday over her social media posts condemning violent incidents against refugees in past weeks.
“While those who burned the homes of small children and wanted to carry out massacres were released, I was arrested because I criticized this,” Mozalar told Yesil Gazete before she was arrested on court orders for “inciting hatred and animosity among the public”.
In her social media posts, Mozalar opposed recent attacks on refugees and defended everyone’s right to live “happily and equally”.
Turkey has seen violent anti-migrant and anti-refugee protests in recent weeks following an alleged child abuse case in Kayseri province that involved Syrian refugees. Angry protesters raided shops owned by Syrian refugees and set fire to several vehicles in the city.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the violence as “vandalism”.
Turkey’s new generation left-wing TIP and LGBTI+ groups condemned the arrest of Mozalar. “Our comrade Iris has been arrested by the court for standing up against the attacks on refugees. We will continue our struggle until peace and brotherhood prevail in our country instead of hate and hostility,”.TIP’s LGBTI+ Bureau said in a written statement on Thursday.
The Istanbul LGBTI+ Pride Week Committee also demanded Mozalar’s immediate release.
“Our friend Mozalar was detained from her home last night over a tweet, held overnight, and brought before a judge this morning with a request for arrest. Freedom of expression cannot be suppressed. We demand her immediate release,”it said in a statement on Thursday.
The Socialists’ Women’s Assemblies said that Mozalar was not the one inciting hatred and animosity among the public. “It is not our solidarity that leads ‘the people to hatred and hostility’ but the male-dominated hate policies towards refugees,” they said on X on Thursday.
LGBTI+ groups and TIP plan a protest on Friday evening in Istanbul near Sureyya Opera House against Mozalar’s arrest.

Turkey closed its main border crossings into northwest Syria on Tuesday after Turkish troops came under fire from Syrians angered by violence against their compatriots in Turkey, a Syrian opposition source and residents said.
In Turkey, police detained 474 people involved in attacks targeting the Syrian community across the country overnight, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said, in spreading unrest that began late on Sunday.
Properties and vehicles owned by Syrians were vandalised and set on fire in the central city of Kayseri, stoked by social media reports that a Syrian man had sexually abused a female child relative. Yerlikaya said the incident was being investigated.
The violence spread to the provinces of Hatay, Gaziantep, Konya, Bursa and an Istanbul district, Turkey's MIT intelligence agency said in a statement. There were social media reports of some injuries among Syrians.
Subsequently, hundreds of angry Syrians took to the streets in several towns in the rebel-held northwest Syria, an area where Turkey maintains thousands of troops and has carved out a sphere of influence that has stopped Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from regaining control.
Late on Monday, Turkey responded to the unrest by closing until further notice the Bab al Hawa border crossing, a main trade and passenger conduit for more than 3 million inhabitants, along with Bab al Salam and other smaller crossings, a border official told Reuters.
The Syrian border city of Afrin was the scene of the most violent clashes, with at least four people killed in an exchange of fire between armed protesters and Turkish troops.
Elsewhere, there were skirmishes and armed clashes, with civilians hurling stones at Turkish convoys in several towns, and tearing down the Turkish flag on some offices.
Several Turkish officials described the unrest in Syria as "provocations", with the Foreign Ministry saying: "It is wrong to use the sad events that took place in Kayseri ... as the basis for some provocations beyond our borders."
In a speech on Tuesday, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan blamed the "chaos plan" on groups associated with terrorist organisations, and vowed to reveal the "dirty hands" behind the recent incidents.
"We know who is playing in these games staged with the remnants of the terrorist organisation. Neither us, nor our Syrian brothers, will fall into this sly trap .we will not give in to racist vandalism," Erdogan said following the cabinet meeting.
Erdogan said more than 670,000 people have returned to areas in northern Syria, where Turkey has been operating to create safe zones over the past decade.
He added, the refugee issue will be solved humanely and morally in line with the economic realities of Turkey, which is hosting more than 3 million Syrian war refugees.
Erdogan said last Friday a meeting with Assad was possible to help restore bilateral relations. Turkey severed ties with Syria after the 2011 Syrian civil war and supported rebels looking to oust Assad.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Monday that 63 investigations have started into organised “provocative and negative” bot activity related to the anti-migrant protests that have spread over the country.
“After the events that took place in Kayseri on the evening of June 30, 343,000 posts were shared from approximately 79,000 accounts on the social media platform X; 37 per cent of shared accounts are BOTs; It was determined that 68 per cent of the posts were provocative and negative,” Yerlikaya announced.
Yerlikaya added that in investigations regarding 63 accounts, “10 of them were referred to the prosecutor’s office as operations against the others continue”.
Turkey has been seeing anti-migrant and anti-refugee protests since Sunday following an alleged child abuse case in Kayseri province that involved Syrian refugees.
Angry protestors raided shops owned by Syrian refugees and set fire to several vehicles in the city.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the violence, which started with the allegation that a foreign national had sexually abused a child in Kayseri, as “vandalism”. “It is unacceptable to set fire to the streets,” he said on Monday.
However, the protests escalated on Monday following counter-protests in Turkish-controlled Northern Syria. As a result, 464 protesters were detained by police in addition to the alleged rapist, Yerlikaya announced on Tuesday.
Protesters there threw stones at Turkish soldiers and Turkish flags were burned. “Four people were killed in exchanges of fire between protesters and guards stationed at Turkish positions,” the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Monday.
Protestors organised rallies in several Turkish cities, often chanting: “Turkey belongs to Turks,” or “We do not want any more Syrians”.
Turkey officially hosts more than 4.5 million refugees, including 3.2 million Syrian refugees, but critics say that the real number is much higher.
The country has been shaken by xenophobic violence in recent years, often triggered by hate speech campaigns on social media and digital platforms.
