Also not reading many novels myself I’m not sure how often this happens, but loved that in the Woman in White it was civilised, southern Hampshire that was the dreary setting for our heroines’ troubles, and the more so since they both come from Cumberland and recall the north country fondly

#Nothing against Hampshire by the way they gave us Jane Austen and some beautiful cricketing history #Just that it's usually 'the dreary moorland of the wild and uncivilised north' in so many gothic and romantic novels that's the problem #And I think it says a lot about the genre of sensation novels that Collins places some of the more concerning stuff in Hampshire #Which is perhaps a perfect southern setting- as I say Jane Austen and cricket #i.e. abuse and danger threaten even in the domestic sphere and in the most seemingly tranquil places #Though Blackwater Park itself is pretty damn gothic #Also totally sympathise with Marion's issue with the trees by the way #I love trees but when I can't see hills it's just weird #The Woman in White #reading log
