A little detail in 1x08 ‘Valediction’ that has been driving me BONKERS! The movie that Dottie Underwood releases the Midnight Oil into is actually ‘The F Stands for Freedom’, also known as Whitney Frost’s most notable work!!
It’s a little note that has made me seriously rethink my interpretation of when Dottie says “doesn’t sound like my kind of picture” in 2x06 ‘Life of the Party’. I’ve always assumed it’s a little glib remark about Dottie being a Soviet, but it’s always seemed a little on the nose considering her previous ambivalence to ideological conflict (she tends to act more as an agent of chaos, a weapon to be inflicted upon an enemy). Now, I can’t help but wonder if there is a little more to that comment — if, perhaps, she bristles at the memory of being under Fennhoff’s thumb.

With deference of course to any disabled folks in my notes, of course... Faustus. You're a fascist. You twist and abuse people's minds. Use their fear and insecurity against them in the name of hatred and bigotry. Your disability was gained in the backfire of one of your violent, inhuman little schemes blowing up in your face. Don't make us think for a second that you have any right to disability rights standing in front of a fucking swastika OR that you get any protection from the VERY satisfying punishment incurred by your actions. In short? Cap, push him down the stairs and leave it at that. Captain America 421

hello! you may have already answered this, but i just now found the steve and bucky timeline you have made (you've done a wonderful job and its very helpful. if only someone would do that with the entire mcu :/). Anyways, after bucky fell off the train and was captured by hydra, do we know if he was kept on ice until the brainwashing began or if he was just kept imprisoned? I had always assumed that the brainwashing began immediately after he was found post train fall?
Thank you so much! I'm sorry it took me so long to reply! I've been working on that part of the timeline (it is so confusing), but hopefully, I've managed to explain the order of events. Please check out the updated page! In short, Bucky fell from the train on February 1, 1945. He was then found by Soviet soldiers who were sympathetic to Hydra and taken captive not long after that. It is unclear what they did with Bucky until he met Zola again. They probably put him on ice. We know from Agent Carter and other references that Zola didn't get out of prison until August 13, 1949. He wasn't picking Bucky up right away, either. First, he got an official pardon and integrated himself into SHIELD. In August 1950, he finally traveled to the Soviet facility where Bucky was held. Zola operated on Bucky sometime between August 1950 and 1951. You can see Bucky's stump on the operation table; the wound looks relatively fresh, which would fit the theory that he had been cryogenically frozen since his fall. In the CATWS flashback, Zola still calls Bucky "Sergeant Barnes." Bucky also tries to fight back, which tells us that his mind and spirit are not fully broken yet, even after the operation. Zola had learned mind control in prison from one Dr. Johann Fennhoff, whom he met there in May 1946. Fenhoff had previously established the so-called Faustus method which includes the victim being asked if they are ready to comply, to which they respond with "happy to comply." It is possible that some of the Soviets he worked with knew about the method or had independently tried to brainwash Bucky before 1950 because his trigger words are in Russian, but I wouldn't count on it. Between August 1950 and June 1951, at the latest, Bucky gets brainwashed by Zola into becoming the Winter Soldier. We know this because TFATWS references a fight with Isiah Bradley in South Korea during the Korean War where Bucky already had the metal arm. The US Army sends Isiah over there specifically to deal with the Winter Soldier for killing their men. Considering that, June could already be a bit late for our brainwashing timeframe. Bucky keeps getting frozen and brainwashed over the years, first by Zola and the Soviets / the Red Room (Leviathan, which was led by Fennhoff before he was apprehended, was a Red Room predecessor) and then later exclusively by Hydra and their Americans.

Flawed Perfection

Bucky Barnes has a lot to contend with in the 21st century. One difficult task after another is laid out in front of him: managing his new found freedom, attending therapy and working through his trauma. It's a struggle, but recovery is not a straight line, as his therapist so often likes to remind him.
He has to navigate this friendship / relationship / whatever it is with Sam all the while managing his guilt and shame for his years as the Winter Soldier, and his grief over Steve's death. Then of course there’s these new super soldiers that have appeared out of nowhere that have to be dealt with, along with the frustrating inclusion of new faces, like Walker, and the familiar, like Zemo.
And then there is another task, one that sometimes seems to be the most difficult task of all: learning to be kind to his past self.
Rewrite / fix it of TFATWS – you do not need to read the other parts of this series, this works as a standalone. Pre TFATWS to about three months after the series ends. Not just a rehash of the TV series. Entire story is written, will update fortnightly, perhaps more frequently.

Fanfiction: Agent Carter
Recently for fun, I’ve been creating/ updating cover ‘art’ for my fanfiction pages on tumblr (most of my fics were written and posted on AO3 before I actually joined tumblr last year.) I’ve realised though that probably no one is actually going to see the covers unless I blog/ reblog the stories, so I am going to be doing this periodically over the coming months.
If this story is new to you, I hope you enjoy it. 😀
Summary of Midweek Mornings at the New York Bell Company and Summer Evenings in Manhattan
‘There was a time when the men at the New York Strategic Scientific Reserve made jokes about Peggy Carter’s laziness – about how she strolled in like a duchess after everyone else was already at their desks, took lunch breaks that seemed to stretch for hours, and once even asked for a day off due to ‘lady problems.’ It just went to show, they said, that you couldn’t count on women to do this kind of work.
Then came the Johann Fennhoff case…’

Court Mandated Therapy

by singthebeginningofmoana
What was not easy to deal with was the court mandated therapy sessions. Bucky understood the government’s reasoning for why these twice a week sessions were necessary, but that didn’t make the situation any easier on him.
An exploration of Bucky's history with therapy and how that affects him.

It's a complete double standard to treat Bucky alone as if he is culpable for what he is used for under mind-control, but none of the other mind-controlled characters.
.
Clint Barton, Erik Selvig, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daniel Sousa, Bruce Banner, Antonia Dreykov, Yelena Belova, the other Black Widows, the people of Westview and Wanda's other targets, arguably also Carol Danvers.
(oh, and STEVE HIMSELF when he is put in the Winter Soldier role in What If!)
Mind-control is framed as a state that has to be deliberately stopped before a target can do the right thing -- when it's Helen Cho or Luke Cage or even a pig being controlled.
But not when it's Bucky. As per TFATWS, we're told the Winter Soldier was in there all along and Bucky is just innately like that, deep down.
Bucky doesn't get to be welcome into the team after someone used him to try and kill them -- like Clint and Daniel Sousa are.
Bucky doesn't get admitted for psychiatric care, like Erik Selvig was.
(Not until two years have already passed and there's a foreign diplomatically-immune trillionaire footing the bill. His own government laughs at the suggestion of him being allowed even a lawyer.)
He never gets to be in a support group, like all Kilgrave's victims.
(Just has a horrible state-mandated therapist who palpably does not give a shit about him and forces him to do things that make him worse.)
The horror of being controlled is never addressed for Bucky like it is for Clint, Erik, Jessica, Bruce, Yelena, even for minor characters like the people of Westview.
(For them it's a 'violation' but for Bucky it's his own fault. He wakes up from being controlled by Zemo, after screaming for him to stop, and what does he get? 'Which Bucky am I talking to?')
We're supposed to be horrified when a pig is mind-controlled, but not Bucky. We're to blame him for what he was mind-controlled to do.
It's implied Luke Cage possibly does blame Jessica for something she did while controlled ...but he is then controlled himself. So the narrative punishes that viewpoint by subjecting him to the same horror. It's framed as a victimisation of both Luke and Jessica, by Kilgrave.
Kilgrave's fault -- not Luke's.
In regards to Hydra's proxy crimes, Bucky doesn't get that. Even the language used to describe his freedom (a pardon, not an exoneration) implies he had to 'admit' he committed crimes before being legally forgiven for them. And it still comes with conditions, hoops he has to jump through to prove he's not bad.
We see Bucky having a nightmare about what he was used for (not, eg. of being tortured). But it is framed as a terrible thing that happened to someone else. Not as a terrible thing that happened to Bucky, too.
The writers can frame mind-controlling people as a villainous aspect of Wanda, Kilgrave, and Johann Fennhoff's character, but never acknowledge that Bucky is therefore a victim not a perpetrator. Even arguably 'brainwashed' (not mind-controlled) characters like Nat and Carol are let completely off the hook, without consequences.
.
All of these 👆 people get to be '100% innocent' but Bucky, alone, is guilty and should be punished?
It's clear the creators know perfectly well Bucky is not to blame, they've decided they just don't like this one guy in particular. 😕
🤡 Markus and McFeely 🤡: “Yeah, Bucky’s just a POW who had his entire agency explicitly removed in not one but TWO ways but he’s for sure guilty because we don’t want him to have fruit salads with Steve”
