WhatsApp experiments New Business Search Feature and In-App business
As we know, Meta is shifting its attention on messaging, including contacts, groups, and communities messaging. Meta is seeking more business opportunities for WhatsApp. On November 17, WhatsApp announced its new "Business Search'' and "directory" Feature in the Brazil market. With this upgrade, WhatsApp users may directly search for businesses in the WhatsApp UI by name or category. At the same time, WhatsApp is expanding its payment function so that ultimately users can make payments by cards within a chat.
Tumblr media
According to TechChurch, "Business Search" aims to help individuals avoid having to spend time looking for phone numbers of businesses from their websites and keying in and saving those details to their phone contacts. The search function protects users privacy, which is processed in a way that cannot be linked back to the user's account. The expanding "directory" feature allows users to browse and discover local small businesses in their neighborhoods through a digital map. Directory could show local stores’ details including location, pictures, and products.
The new functions highlight WhatsApp's ongoing efforts to transform the massive messaging app into a commerce engine. The business of click-to-WhatsApp ads had increased by 80% year over year and was on course to produce $1.5 billion in yearly income, according to information provided by the company in the most recent quarterly earnings report.
Tumblr media
According to Social Media Today, Besides the Brazilian market, Meta is currently testing an end-to-end shopping experience with Jiomart to expand its e-commerce business in India. The "Business Search" feature is expected to launch in Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Mexico, and the UK.

Meta and Reliance forge alliances to take on B2C e-commerce giants in India
Tumblr media
The Indian e-commerce industry has been experiencing a rapid growth trajectory over the last three to four years. After a sudden increase in digital adoption during the global pandemic outbreak, India continued to experience a massive rise in real-time online transactions in 2021. Consumers in Tier II and Tier III cities have transacted online more than ever, and a large proportion of the rural population entered the online shopping industry.
From the presence of several players and the emergence of innovative business models such as social commerce, there have been many factors responsible for driving exponential growth in the Indian e-commerce industry. There are more than 4,000 active e-commerce startups in India, which are also playing a significant role in driving industry growth. Impressively, the Indian e-commerce sector growth story, along with the massive potential of the industry, has attracted interest from big conglomerates. For instance,
In August 2022, Reliance Industries, which operates JioMart through Reliance Retail, announced that it is launching JioMart on WhatsApp, the instant messaging app owned by Meta Platforms. The launch follows JioMart and Meta Platforms testing the integration of the service with select users in India two years ago.
The rollout of JioMart on WhatsApp will enable users to browse through the grocery catalog and add items to the cart. Users can also make the payment through the WhatsApp Pay integrated feature, thereby allowing them to complete the transaction without ever leaving the platform.
This strategic collaboration is important from a number of different perspectives. For one, the commerce engine can result in a major revenue driver for both JioMart and WhatsApp. This is all the more important for WhatsApp, which has largely avoided serving ads to its users. Additionally, the end-to-end shopping experience will also accelerate the digital transformation while providing consumers and businesses – of all sizes – opportunities to connect in new ways, such as conversational commerce. Moreover, the JioMart and WhatsApp experience is expected to revolutionize the way consumers shop online in India by offering unparallel simplicity and convenience.
This integrated shopping network created by JioMart and WhatsApp is projected to take on e-commerce behemoths like Flipkart and Amazon, two of the leading marketplaces in the country.
The strategic alliance with Meta Platforms means that Reliance Retail gets access to more than 487 million WhatsApp users in India. This is significant from the viewpoint that the total number of annualized active e-commerce users is only 200 million. It means that JioMart will have access to more than double the number of consumers compared to all e-commerce platforms combined, including Amazon and Flipkart.
Moreover, given the fact that WhatsApp is something that Indians are comfortable with and grocery is related to high-frequency purchases, the two firms are projected to gain significant traction and market share from the short-term perspective.
The integrated shopping experience created by JioMart and WhatsApp is also a threat to many innovative startups in the online grocery space. Notably, access to millions of consumers through WhatsApp means that JioMart is far ahead of the many startups, including Zepto, Blinkit, and Swiggy Instamart, operating in the space. While Blinkit, which is owned by Zomato, and Swiggy Instamart might find themselves in a competitive position, players like Zepto and Dunzo might struggle due to the alliance between JioMart and WhatsApp.
Over the next three to four years, the integrated, conversational commerce experience launched by JioMart and WhatsApp is expected to onboard many first-time online shoppers in India. Consequently, further assisting the growth of the booming e-commerce sector in the country from the short to medium-term perspective.

Reliance Jio telecom latest news: users can recharge their subscriptions via WhatsApp from 2022
Tumblr media
Telecom major Reliance Jio and Meta (formerly Facebook) on Wednesday said Jio users will soon be able to recharge their subscription using WhatsApp.
Speaking at Meta's Fuel for India 2021 event, Jio Platforms Ltd Director Akash Ambani said Jio and Meta teams are working closely to open more avenues of collaboration.
"One such avenue is Jio on WhatsApp, which is simplifying the entire 'prepaid recharge' which will be rolled out very soon. This will bring consumers convenience like they've never had before," he said.
The feature is slated to be rolled out in 2022. Jio Platforms Director Isha Ambani noted that the feature will make the process of recharging simple, especially for older citizens who at times may find it difficult to head outside.
"It is really exciting how the end-to-end experience for Recharge through WhatsApp along with the ability to make payments can potentially make the lives of millions of Jio subscribers much more convenient," she said.
Reliance Jio had 429.5 million users at the end of September 2021 quarter. In April 2020, Meta (Facebook at that time) had announced an investment of USD 5.7 billion ( Rs 43,574 crore) in Jio Platforms.
The companies had also talked about creating a better shopping and commerce experience in India working with JioMart by leveraging WhatsApp's communication and payments platform.
On Wednesday, Akash Ambani said there are currently over half a million retailers on JioMart and the number is growing.
"We continue to be so excited about our partnership with Meta and in collaboration with the WhatsApp team, we intend to build out native features that will not only help users shop seamlessly on WhatsApp but will also help retailers increase stock assortments, improve margins and get them closer to perhaps a larger base of customers, like never before," he added.
"Our goal as a company has always been to enable new opportunities for businesses of all sizes, especially for the more than 63 million small businesses across India. They are the backbone of the economy, and they form the heart and soul of rural and urban communities, alike," she said.

Facebook launches revamped Instagram Lite app in India
Facebook is working to bring back the Instagram Lite app, months after it shut down the light version offering worldwide.
The social conglomerate said on Wednesday that it is testing the revamped Instagram Lite app in India, where it hopes to “gain valuable insights” about the new offering before “a global rollout” of the app later.
The revamped Instagram Lite app weighs less than 2MB and delivers a “fast, reliable, and responsive” experience of the social service. The Android app supports Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu, but currently lacks a several core features of Instagram including Reels, Shopping and IGTV.
Facebook quietly discontinued the previous iteration of Instagram Lite earlier this year. In July, Vishal Shah, VP of Product at Instagram, told TechCrunch that the company had identified some issues in the app and was working to resolve those. In September, a new Lite app was spotted in the wild, though Facebook did not acknowledge it.
Lite apps are especially popular in emerging markets where most users don’t have access to high-end smartphones or fast and cheap mobile internet data. Facebook Lite app, for instance, had about 40 million monthly active users in India last month, while Messenger Lite app had about 13 million, according to mobile insight firm App Annie, data of which an industry executive shared with TechCrunch. (Instagram app had about 164 million users.)
Shah made the announcement about the revamped Instagram Lite app at Facebook Fuel for India event on Wednesday, where scores of Facebook executives including Mark Zuckerberg and Ajit Mohan outlined a number of other programs they were working on for the world’s second largest internet market.
Instagram also announced the second version of ‘Born on Instagram,’ a one-year-old program it has built for content creators to better understand and leverage ways to collaborate with one another and explore monetization opportunities.
“With the test of Instagram Lite, and the next edition of Born on Instagram, we’re aiming to democratize expression and creativity for a greater number of people in India,” said Shah.
At the event, WhatsApp India head Abhijit Bose said that the company was working to launch sachet-sized health insurance offering to users in India this month. In July, WhatsApp had unveiled that it was working to pilot credit, insurance, and pension services in India, the instant messaging app’s biggest market by users, over the next year and a half.
“WhatsApp has proactively been working on several pilots to help ensure that every adult has access to the most basic critical financial and livelihood services through their mobile device. By the end of this year, we expect that people will be able to buy affordable sachet sized health insurance through WhatsApp,” Bose said today. For insurance protection, WhatsApp has partnered with SBI General, and for pension, with HDFC Pension.
Facebook, which identifies India as its biggest market by users, is also working with telecom giant Jio Platforms to help tens of millions of small businesses establish online presence and sell digitally. The American giant, which invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms this year, are collaborating to make Jio Platforms’ JioMart e-commerce service available through WhatsApp. Some new features are coming to JioMart’s WhatsApp channel in the “coming days,” Facebook and Reliance executives teased today.
