'Bob Dylan' ist der Name der neuen Woog Riots Single, die am 14. Mai 2021 auf dem eigenen Label 'From Lo-Fi To Disco' veröffentlicht wird. Sie ist Teil und Nr.5 der im Jahr 2020 gestarteten Singles Serie. Woog Riots erhielten eine Einladung, einen Beitrag zu einem Event anlässlich von Bob Dylans 80. Geburtstags beizusteuern. Der Organisator Thomas Waldherr schrieb selbst mehrere Bücher über Dylan und betreibt einen Blog mit dem Titel “I’m a cowboy in a band”. The Burning Hell Twee, smart, and dangerously funny, this band wouldn’t be out of place on the Juno soundtrack. Go see The Burning Hell if your ultimate wet dream involves beautifully ugly sweaters, making fun of bad amateur poets and The Decemberists. The Narcissist Cookbook This folk-punk act offers a genuine snapshot of deep inner thoughts paired with foot-tapping instrumental backing. Review: Jeffrey Lewis + The Burning Hell + The Narcissist Cookbook

“The best part of a gig is to be constantly surprised” 

Jeffrey Lewis, The Burning Hell and The Narcissist Cookbook delivered just that at Mediterranea last Saturday. The cozy gig was the perfect combination of funny, engaging and visually entertaining.

The Narcissist Cookbook started out the night with a very funny yet grounding set. Infused with pop culture jokes and self deprecation, it was a very real experience. His use of the loop pedal really shined as he layered songs and altered their gravity as he went along. The subject matter and form of the songs also varied quite a bit, with the artist interjecting spoken word into the songs and making them more conversational. The Narcissist Cookbook was surprisingly uplifting, I really look forward to seeing what he does next.

The Burning Hell also really delivered. Their anecdotal songs, paired with the bass clarinet (my new favourite instrument) and some really smooth harmonies made it such an enjoyable experience. Mathias’s deadpan delivery, musical references, and some pretty vivid imagery, proved to be a great combination which had the audience laughing out loud. It had a very campfire storytelling vibe, with the lights flickering as the singers went back and forth. At one point they even got the audience involved for one of their biggest songs ‘Fuck the Government, I Love You’. “Small towns are more exciting” said Ariel Sharratt, bass clarinet player and singer, “you never know what’s going to happen”.

Jeffrey Lewis finished off the night by setting up the scene with a projector. The DIY aesthetic paired with crisp sound and funny lyrics made for an engaging performance. The set was varied with a mixture of witty humor, Weird Al-esque lists, and reworded covers. A few times during his set, he asked audience members to sit on the floor as he set up the projector to show his hand drawn slides as part of his ‘low budget films’. From The History of Communism Part 6, to an adult film, to a nature documentary, Lewis talk-sung us through them with some backing instrumentation. “The best part of a gig is to be constantly surprised” Lewis said after the show, noting that getting material for his films is “almost too easy, the world is full of amazing stories”.  

I would have to salute Gregor Flynn for his part in setting all of it up, the whole feel of the gig was very welcoming and cozy, and the audience really felt that. Mediterranea is amazing as a space, made even better by Peter Russell setting up a ‘Sketchamigig’ corner. Not only did he work throughout the gig to provide visual entertainment, but he also offered his materials to other showgoers, collaboratively filling the wall with art. As the night went on and we all got more comfortable, the audience started getting closer to the artists, started laughing louder at the jokes. Overall, it was a great night and I hope Gregor and the gang do more events like this in the future.
