He grunted, “I’m fine, but Vicky needs our help. Let’s get the hell out of here before the guards find out! I don't think I can fend them off if we're discovered!”

Brian heard gunfire for the very first time when he was fifteen. It kind of sounded like it did in Hollywood, but at the same time, it didn't. Gunfire wasn’t like a bomb or firecrackers. It sounded more like an engine backfired next to a bullhorn. It was so indistinct, Brian's entire body tensed for a split second whenever he heard something similar.

However, over the last six years, it became a knee jerk reaction since those pops never turned out to be gunshots again, and he calmed down as quickly as he freaked out.

It wasn't until Scott and Vicky dropped like stones and their blood pooled around them like macabre halos that Brian's fears were confirmed. The screaming of his classmates hit his ear like a bat to the side of his face and he hit the deck and shook uncontrollably. His friends and lover bled out only two feet away, and yet he couldn't even move to stem the bleeding or call emergency services.

"Vicky? Scott? Oh my god," Brian croaked. Scott gurgled on the other side of Vicky. Terror had frozen him in place. Brian loathed himself for his weakness, but even as he scolded himself with the most scathing remarks, his body refused to budge. "Somebody help us! Please!"

Above Brian, a cyclonic portal opened, and Oz and Zoe, albeit bedraggled, hopped onto the sidewalk next to Brian's head.

"Oh my god!" Oz screamed in horror. He and Zoe crouched next to Scott and Vicky.

"Go! Damien is gone, he could be hurt. I'll take care of Scott," Zoe said.

"Brian, where's Damien?" Oz asked.

"I don't know," Brian said, "I think he ran after the shooters, but I don't know where they went."

"Brian, I need your help," Zoe said.

"I-I can't."

"They're gone. Scott needs help, or he's going to bleed to death."

Zoe threw her jacket over Vicky's head. "There. I know you're in pain, Brian, but Scott is dying. I need your help. Please, come here."

Shakily, Brian pushed himself onto all fours and crawled over to Zoe and Scott. He gagged and swallowed bile. Bits of Vicky's brain and hair were splattered onto Scott's face, and he gurgled as he feebly pressed his paw against his torn carotid.

"Focus on me," Zoe said. "What's your blood type?"

"O-positive," he replied.

"Excellent. This is going to hurt, but this is the only thing that's going to save Scott."

Brian nodded. Zoe plunged her tentacles into Brian's neck.

Vicky's head sprayed over Scott. Damien had fired enough guns to have instantly understood what had happened.

He took after the black car behind them that squealed away from campus. Damien wasn't anything extraordinary, but the second of Vicky's murder, his unbridled rage pushed him harder than ever before.

Damien gained on the car even as it accelerated upwards of sixty miles an hour. Damien threw himself onto the trunk, and to throw him off, the driver spun the car and they careened into power lines. Damien howled when he collided with solid wood. The splintered pole creaked and he realized it tipped over like a tree.

He managed to push himself free right as the cables ripped. Electricity crackled, the live cables writhed like beheaded snakes, sparks flew in every direction.

Damien stormed to the driver’s seat. Every inch of him burned with unbridled homicidal rage palpable enough that the air around him shuddered with heatwaves. He grabbed the driver, a yellow manticore, by their collar and threw them onto the live powerlines. They combusted without a sound.

Finally, he pulled the passenger, a young vampire, into the street. They were unconscious and bled from their forehead. “Wake the fuck up!” Damien bellowed. He slapped them and they awoke with a yelp. “What’s your name?”

“What?” they asked.

“I asked for your fucking name!” Damien screamed.

“Fuck off!”

Damien pulled a knife from his waistband and held it against their throat. “Fine, did you shoot my girlfriend then?”

“I did!” the vampire spat with a vicious tone. “She killed my dad!”

“She had come so far! We were going to be happy together!”

“And I’ll never be happy without my dad!”

“This is your fault. Now I'm going to string you up by your fucking guts!"

Damien kicked the gun out of their hand as they reached for it. He sank his knife into their abdomen and pushed it down until it nicked their pubic bone. Damien pushed them back with a fistful of their intestines. They fell back with eyes as wide as dinner plates. Fruitlessly, they weakly stuffed their innards inside, before they fell limp.

He crouched over them as they breathed raspily. “This is the end. You messed with the wrong bitches.”

“Damien!” Oz screamed. Oz tackled Damien and they rolled across the asphalt.

“Fuck!” Damien screamed as he pushed Oz off. “Get off! I’m going to kill them all!”

“She is gone and mutilating him,” Oz flung his hand to point at the dying vampire, “isn’t going to do jackshit. But Scott barely clinging to life. He needs his friends. Please, put this behind you for your friends.”

It was like Oz kicked the wind out of Damien. Rage subsided, and he began to cry.

Vicky was gone for the rest of his life: fodder for blowflies and worms.

Zoe parked Brian's truck. They tumbled out and ran full speed into the Emergency Room. Vera stormed to the front desk. “We’re here for Scott Howl. I’m his Power of Attorney, Vera Oberlin.”

“Miss Oberlin, we need you to fill out some paperwork for Mister Howl,” said the receptionist.

As Vera filled out paperwork, Oz had to help Damien and Brian into chairs next to each other. The pair looked miserable. Brian’s head was in his hands, Damien rubbed his mouth with a disconnected gaze. Yet as much as it pained Oz to see his friends like that, there were more imminent threats. He needed to warn the LaVey family of the Aquino’s plan for their demise.

He couldn’t tell Damien about their plan, though. He was already put through the wringer. He needed to get Damien’s parents into the equation. A manipulative tactic, but Oz reasoned that Damien needed their support anyway, so really, it helped everyone.

Oz kneeled in front of Brian and Damien and held their hands. "Damien, you need to call your dads. You need them now."

Damien nodded with glassy eyes. “Right,” he murmured before he dug through his pockets.

Zoe pulled Oz aside. “Please, for the love of whatever you hold sacred, tell me we’re not keeping the Aquino’s plan a secret. More people are going to be killed if we keep this on the DL, maybe Vicky will be hurt worse.”

“That’s why I reminded Damien to call his parents.

"Excellent."

Before Oz could reply, Blobert and Liam ran into the emergency room. Blobert sobbed inconsolably. Oz ran over to them.

"We came as soon as we heard about Scott," Liam said.

Oz hugged them. "Thank you."

"Is he going to be okay?" Blobert asked. He sounded so desperate, and somehow, despite Blobert's gelatinous nature, he gripped Oz's hands so hard he thought they might break.

"I don't know. He's in surgery now and we haven't heard any updates," Oz replied.

"What about Vicky?"

A hush fell over their group. Damien resumed crying, Brian escaped into the nearby bathroom. Oz couldn't look Blobert in the eye.

"I'm sorry, but she's dead," he told Blobert.

"We believe Vicky was targeted by a gang she robbed the other day. Damien took care of the perps, but they got in a good shot. She's not coming back," Zoe said.

Valerie hopped the back of a chair squeezed Blobert as he sobbed. Oz waited by the doors where his cries were someone muffled.

He felt awful. He was too late. He was always too late.

Lucien and Stan ran inside as Oz internally berated himself. If only Vicky could see how many people loved her.

Oz stood. "Go comfort your son, but as soon as possible, I have an issue of utmost importance about your kingdom's security."

Oz took Lucien into an adjacent waiting room.

"Oz, correct?" Lucien asked.

"What is this supposed security threat?"

"The Aquino family is behind Vicky's murder. I've been having premonitions about her death, so my girlfriend and I have been looking into it in hopes we save her. However, the Aquino caught on and kidnapped us. Dahlia explained to us that she and her family plan to use Vicky as a weapon against you, and more worrisome, Damien, to overthrow your rule," Oz explained.

Lucien rubbed his face with concern. "This is a dire accusation. This is something we go to war over."

"The Aquino already plan to do that. It seems you don't have a lot of options here," Oz countered.

"What proof do you have? How do I know I can trust you?"

"Vera and Vicky have robbed three dozen banks with CCTV, guards, and alarm systems, and never once have they been even suspected, and yet a lab, where they executed the same precautions, somehow figured out their identities and location, and then killed Vicky. Do you think that's coincidental?"

"Lucien, I understand it's a lot to take in, but we need to begin preparations as soon as possible. Do you have someone who can begin something, anything, while you're here to comfort your son?"

Oz returned to his friends and paced in the waiting room as they waited for news on Scott's condition. Some hours later, they were approached by the surgeon.

"I'm glad to announce Mister Howl survived the operation without any complications. He will need to stay overnight in case there are any hiccups with his blood transfusion, but we are optimistic about his prognosis. If you like, you may visit him."

They were guided into Scott's room. He was intubated and pale, but his vitals were stable and lively.

Oz breathed a sigh of relief. At least something had gone right that day.

The morning of Vicky's funeral, Damien was stiff.

"You're the only one going?"

"Yes. But I should be back before the ceremony."

Damien grimly nodded. Border disputes weren't handled by either king. Perhaps the Minister of Border Land was out.

Stan sat at the island. "How do you feel?" he asked. Damien shrugged. He missed Vicky, but he said that every day since her death. "I wish I could do more. I do, Damien. I cared very much about Vicky as well."

Damien's lip wobbled and he wiped his eyes. He didn’t feel any different since the first day she died, but all that meant was he hurt like an open wound.

“It feels wrong without her. The more I think about it, the more it hurts.”

“Yes, but she left pieces of her with you and Brian. I’m sure you remember how much she loved you,” Stan said. Damien nodded. “I know it’s not a lot, but she loved you so much, and that is something that will never die.”

Damien smiled at his dad. He appreciated the effort, but Stan’s reassurance didn’t change how badly he ached. Damien could only hope the funeral would soothe him.

“Then we would have been notified of her entrance into Hell!”

“Your Majesty, please quiet down. I understand why this upsets you but our conversation may not be private.”

Lucien sighed. “Nonetheless, why weren’t we notified of her death and damnation?”

“It’s likely her soul was intercepted. I’ve looked into it and… Your Majesty, I’m sorry to tell you this, but Oz and Zoe were right, it is the Aquino family. I found correspondence with the drug manufacturers detailing who attacked them and where to find Vicky, and ingredients to summon the dead.”

“Yes and no. We know she is in the care of the Aquino,” Lucien explained. Oz wanted to break something. “We need you to find her and bring her back. You’ll have Mungandr to help. His magic will prove useful.”

“You need to go,” she said to him. “I will stay for Brian and Damien, but you need to go save Vicky.”

He nodded. “Apologize to our friends for me.”

So @27dragons and I are at it again...

I polled for some Halloween prompts last week (and got lots, thanks, you guys are great!) and I opened the doc so she and I could chitchat, and we started throwing ideas around and...

so, over the weekend, we’ve written 25,000 words or so on a WinterIron werewolf piece.

So, here’s a little excerpt to pique your interest... 

Tony wasn’t sure what he expected, something like a mutt crossbreed rottweiler and pitbull from what Mitch was describing, or maybe a German Shepherd mix with a Pomeranian, based on the baby-noises Darla was making as she brought out the dog.

What he saw wasn’t a dog at all; it was a fucking timberwolf. Mostly black, with a rough mane of thick grey around his neck, and one front paw that was silver-grey up to the shoulder. He had blue eyes that were wide as he stared around the room, paws splayed and toenail clicking as he struggled with the linoleum floor. Every cat in the room turned and bolted for the dubious safety of the cat-hideys in the tree.

The beast was at least four and a half feet at the shoulder, and up on hind legs, was going to be taller than most people. It looked like it had spent the night in a mudpuddle and the staff had only done a half-hearted job of cleaning him up.

“He’s a rescue,” Darla told him. “We got him from a routine euthanasia center. They give the owners thirty-six hours to show up, or they put the animals down. Less, if they’re not chipped.” She patted Bucky’s thick fur at the back of his neck. “But he’s a good boy, isn’t him? Him just needs some love.”

Bucky didn’t seem to particularly agree with this sentiment, not doing any of the playful things Tony had seen dogs doing, and was, in fact, glaring and curling his lip at Mitch, who was backed up as far as possible, the paperwork in hand. Mitch looked like he was sort of wishing he could take refuge in the cat-tree, too.

“This is awesome,” Tony crowed. “Whoever this ‘T’ person is who’s been threatening me, they’re going to take one look and run screaming. This is great, this is perfect.” He held out his hand for Darla to give him the leash. “We’re going to be the best of pals, I can tell. Huge donation check coming your way, absolutely.”

“Okay,” Darla said. “Here’s what we’ve been feeding him, and his snacks, and a blanket, he likes his fluffy blankets, him does. Oh, and you should probably know, about this breed--”

Tony could have sworn the dog/wolf/monster actually rolled his eyes at the baby voice, but stuck a huge nose into the bag that Darla was trying to hand him. He yanked out an honest-to-God fluffy baby blanket with a red star on it and started chewing on it.

“Oh, no, I don’t have time to go over all the details,” Tony said, checking his watch. “Just throw a brochure in the bag and I’ll go over it as soon as I have five minutes to spare. Food and snacks, that should get us through the next couple of hours, right? Right.” He swept the bag out of Darla’s hand, giving her one of his practiced charming grins.

It was heavier than it looked, and in the instant while he got it situated and turned toward the door, it occurred to him that it was entirely possible that Bucky would fail to follow him, and he had no idea what to do if that was the case, because it looked like Bucky easily outweighed Tony, so dragging the creature was definitely out of the question.

Well, fake it till you make it was practically Tony’s motto, and it had worked out fairly well for him so far (death threats aside, anyhow), so he swept one last quick look around the shelter, tossed off a jaunty wave in Mitch’s direction, and headed toward the door.

Bucky waited until the leash was at full stretch, letting Tony attempt to yank once. It almost felt deliberate, like the dog was letting him realize just how much bigger than your average mutt Bucky was, before he trotted obediently over to heel as Tony left the pet shelter. Once outside, the dog shook himself all over, spraying a blizzard of dog hair everywhere. He then grabbed the leash with his teeth, not far from Tony’s hand, giving Tony an upclose look at fangs the size of his damn fingers, and lightly tugged, pulling Tony around in the other direction.

He took two steps and looked back at Tony with a what are you waiting for look.

“I don’t think you fully understand how this leash thing is supposed to work,” Tony said. But Bucky was still tugging, and those teeth were still enormous, but those blue eyes seemed calm and certain. “All right, fine, but don’t get it into your head that this is going to be a regular occurrence.” He took a step in the direction Bucky was pulling him.

The dog dragged him over to a small Saab, the kind of car a well-to-do hipster might own, in a dark blue. He sniffed at the car a few times, barked once -- and it wasn’t a little polite bark, but a huge, chesty WOOF that Tony could swear echoed around the street -- and lifted a leg. He drenched the tiny car in pee. There was enough pee in that dog to make a fireplug jealous.

Bucky scratched a few times at the pavement after he was done, wagging his tail fiercely as the door to the shelter opened and Mitch stared in shock. “... my car.”

I didn’t realize that the regular line was so long that it wrapped around the building. before I got in line, I went to go get my photo op package and then I got in line with my cousin. I get there at six, so there was still plenty of time and we start talking to the people in front of us. during that time, I start passing out the glowsticks to those who don’t have any.

(also sorry to those who were looking for me for a glowstick.)

anyway, soon, it hits seven and we all start moving. we get into the venue, I hand my gift for himchan over to whoever is I charge. (the gift is a coloring books, colored pencils, and a notebook.) my cousin and I get to the lounge and relax a bit. (with a sex on the beach fuck yeah!) after it hits 7:50, we go to our seats and wait patiently.

and the ln the opening act appears.

dude, everybody was hyped. the beat was amazing and i was jumping around having a great time. it was a lot of fun. and then b.a.p arrived. everybody was screaming once the beat dropped. I couldn’t hear that well, so I didn’t know what song they were playing, until I hear youngjae’s line for hurricane. 

listen, I want all of the edm remixes on all of b.a.p’s music. my cousin was feeling it. there was a girl in front of me who was feeling it. 

 during that song, my lightstick wasn’t working because I accidentally dropped it when I was in line, so I had to use a backup glowstick that I was able to save for myself. 

 the second song was badman and again, the song was bangin’. if you could hear really closely, you could hear the fans singing along. in fact, in almost every song you could hear the fans singing along. it was a great experience, but i’m a bit sad I didn’t film some of it. 

 after badman, no mercy came on. my cousin turned to me and told me that she remembered that song. I should mention that my cousin is not a b.a.p fan nor does she listen to kpop. she was here so I don’t feel lonely. when no mercy ended, bang bang started up, which is a song that I love unconditionally. I love the song and I love rocking to it.

most of the songs that they did were amazing! i couldn’t really remember some of the songs, but i remember very fondly that i was dancing along to some of them. and then came the talk.

okay, so it was yongguk’s turn to pick. i was high up above, so i saw what was going on. it looked like yongguk picked a girl with the byg headband, but it turned out to be someone else (kayla) and there was a bit of confusion. kayla was so cute i love her. i’m a bit jealous, but i’m so glad that she got up there. she was trying to calm herself and i think yongguk was having a bit of fun with her.

dude, yongguk was so fucking flirty it was hilarious. AND KAYLA CURVED HIM LIKE HELLO. she said she was born in oakland, but lived in seattle, so i think yongguk said it was nice that time of year or something along those lines.

now here’s something for those bangdae shippers. since there was a lot of confetti, some of it got on hair or clothes. well, apparently, some of it got on yongguk’s hair, so daehyun bravely picked the confetti out of his hair.

i don’t know if they do this to all of the fans, but yongguk gave her a videotape that he was filming with all the members while saying ‘for your eyes only.’ okay bang, okay.

during that time, i saw jongup leaving before their small talk. obviously he was getting ready for his solo. so after all of that was done, it was time for jongup’s solo.

jongup never fails to disappoint. this is why this little shit is my bias wrecker. he has a gorgeous voice, he’s a great dancer, and now all he needs to do is act and he’ll be a triple threat.

after jongup’s solo ended, zelo came onto the stage. he’s so cute and adorable. i took a few pictures with my shitty phone camera, but i’ll post that on instagram or something. 

after zelo’s solo was i believe fermata. it felt weird without himchan there because i know for a fact that he has some lines in that song, but i guess they didn’t want to put a strain on himchan or anything. was i a bit disappointed that he wasn’t there? yes.

after fermata with daehyun, youngjae, and jongup (which i also have some pictures), it was youngjae’s solo. listen, when youngjae decides to drop that solor album, my ass is going to be first in line to buy it. he sounds so good and i love his voice so much. i was mesmerized by the song. 

after youngjae was daehyun’s solo. i was a bit surprised that daehyun was going to do his solo because i heard he was sick or something and some of the other shows he didn’t do his solo. during his solo, zelo came out of nowhere and did his rap and then left. thirty seconds of rapping and everybody was cheering.

also, i have to confess. when they started launching the confetti, my cousin and i were playing a game of who can catch the confetti first. we have very short attention spans and maybe that’s why i don’t remember that much because i was too focused on the confetti.

next was skydive and everybody was screaming. i was, too. it was beautiful! it was so nice to see leader bang taking his place with everybody, since it’s been so long since i’ve seen him dance to skydive. i want all the fanchants at la so that i can keep forever. even though my ears were ringing from the loud noise, i could still hear the chants whenever they were singing and skydive did not disappoint. 

young, wild, and free was a beautiful song and such an amazing performance. again, give me all the fanchants from la and i’ll be set for life. they were all having fun and dancing their heart out.

then there was a bit of talking, but i don’t remember too much about this one. then wake me up started and everybody was getting into it. everybody was screaming when yongguk showed up during his part of the choreo. i slightly remembered the fanchant that daehyun and himchan showed, so i had my whistle ready and chanted along. you can hear the whistles from a mile away i love it.

then they all left, the lights were off and the party’s over but everybody was still cheering for b.a.p to come back. they were teaching us the check on dance, but it’s really the head shoulders knees and toes dance without the knees and toes. it was really cute, actually. during the second verse of the chorus, yongguk was high fiving us at the balcony seating and i believe himchan was attempting to spray us.

during that fun time where everybody was dancing, i noticed that himchan looked to be in a bit of pain, but then he went right back to dancing. i don’t know if it’s the trick of the eye or not, but it looked like he still needed to recover a bit longer. 

during either carnival or feel so good (could be that’s my jam for all i know), someone brought out a go pro and the boys started passing that along to film the audience. my adorable sons. 

during the end of carnival, some of the fans brought out the happy birthday himchan banner and i think himchan looked a bit confused. now this was the highlight of the concert. youngjae was being a little shit and a meme by saying happy birthday bro over and over again. he even got the audience to say it to him. daehyun did, too. everybody was cracking up and i loved it all. 

during the talking portion of the concert, everybody continued to scream. daehyun, being the whiny child he is, was pleading for all of us to be quiet, saying it’s his turn to talk. i felt so bad for him. eventually, everybody quieted down. there were a few screams from the audience, but he got to say what he wanted to say. same thing with youngjae and himchan when they were talking. they would not shut up. then zelo said some things and asked everybody how they liked his solo. youngjae said ‘it was awesome, bro’ or something along those line. zelo replied by whispering in his ear saying ‘thanks bro’. jongup got to talk and he was so sweet talking about his family and how his cousin gave birth. and then daehyun ruined it by being the cheesy little shit. i guess he cringed at his own words because he then walked off the stage, but he eventually came back. (i couldn’t hear very well, but from other fan accounts, i guess he was saying he wants to make a baby.)

yongguk. oh my god, my heart. everybody was screaming for about five minutes straight. he looked so proud and he looked like he was about to cry. my poor angel baby. eventually, he got to talk and when he was done, everybody was screaming. we really didn’t want them to leave. 

the next song was b.a.b.y and although i wasn’t really there since the beginning, seeing a lot of the pictures and videos from when they predebuted and all of that stuff, it made me cry a little. everybody got to sing along and it was beautiful.

and then after the song, they left.

we all thought they were done because b.a.b.y was playing and we were all singing along, but they came back with bang bang again, but without the edm remix. it was still a banging song no matter what. after that, then they finally left. wake me up was playing when they left and a lot of fans were singing.

then came the hi touch and the photo op.

now, i didn’t get hi touch, but i did get a photo op.

it took a while for the hi touch because there’s a lot of people. i was more towards the front, so i got in and got out real quick. i mostly remember jongup, youngjae, and zelo. i think i was standing in front jongup and youngjae. i had my shoulders hunched because i was freezing cold. the jacket i brought with me did not keep me warm. it didn’t help that i was wearing a tank top with space cats on it. 

after the photo was taken, we all left. i turned around and i see youngjae making kissy faces. i think zelo saw my hat, but i didn’t hear anything as i was leaving.

i was cold and tired and had to get up for work, but it was so worth it.

the staff did tell us not to interact with the members or talk to them because they’re tired and want to go back to the hotel and i understand. i wasn’t even performing and i’m tired. it was getting really late and i really hope the boys made it okay to their hotel.

all in all, it was so much fun. i wanna see if i can get my brother to join me next year, but we’ll see. i also want to meet with all of you lovely fans and i’m so sad that i didn’t get to. 

however, i also hope that they won’t do another world tour because i want them to do well in korea. i want them to stay where they are and if they do decide to do a world tour, maybe set it in the summer maybe? some time where school doesn’t interfere with the concert.

I almost forgot about this!

On Twitter the other day, fellow UVic and UBC writer Ruth Daniell (who just had a baby, on the same day I left my job at the Nelson Star) reminded me of the first piece of creative non-fiction I ever published in This Side of West: “Far Away”. She has an awesome painting in there of her future husband. 

It’s a story about a woman named Cat who I was in love with for half a decade. I ultimately wrote a column about her for The Martlet called “I fell in love with a lesbian” and then a piece for OCW Magazine called “Somebody who isn’t there”. But this one, this is the very first piece.

Last I heard, Cat is now non-binary and lives in Halifax. They have a new name (same as Raylan’s father in Justified), a new life, and a new partner. I’m happy for them, and have no plans to look them up. I’m sure they’re taking care, and living life to the fullest.

I’ve decided to re-type the text of “Far Away” below for your reading pleasure, while correcting two small editing errors. If you get your hands on this issue, it also includes work by these compatriots: Josh Thompson, Rosemary Westwood, Jenna Spearing and Darius Kinney.

Cat lifts the joint to her lips, nods as she inhales.

The crimson dragon on her forearm dances up her wrist. It looks like he’s watching her get stoned. She got the tattoo in Thailand, along with the rose on her shoulder. She hates the rose, a black silhouette framed with red. It looks inflamed.

She lets her arm sink to her lap. Smoke curls out of her mouth. We’re sitting on a blanket, and she picks at tiny pills of lint. She offers me the joint, pinched between her fingers.

“I’m good,” I say.

She raises it to her lips, takes a quick toke, then stubs it out in the grass. She roots through her beaten up backpack, retrieves a film canister, then pops it open and drops the roach in.

We’re quiet.

Nearby, the Yukon River gurgles as it winds down Miles Canyon. The constant burbling is punctuated by motorboats every few minutes. One roars by, bass-heavy speakers pumping. It rounds the corner, just below the jutting rock we’re sitting on, and sprays a solid arc of river water into the air. 

“I can’t decide if that’s hot or totally fucking obnoxious,” Cat says as it speeds away.

We lie in the sun. She’s reading The Tenth Insight, sequel to The Celestine Prophecy. After a couple moments she realizes she is too stoned to pay attention and tosses the book aside.

“The more theories you learn about, the less you give a shit about God,” she says. I’m scribbling in my journal and write down her words.

She thinks for a moment, twirls her finger in a curl of my hair, then settles on her back and closes her eyes.

Cat came to Whitehorse to run away from her ex-boyfriend Sean. She drove up from B.C. and took a job helping out at a local hostel. I had just arrived in town, about to start an internship at the Whitehorse Star. When I asked her why she left Powell River, she laughed.

“In that town, you either get knocked up or you get out,” she said. She looked at her lap for a moment, then looked out the window.

The next day we walked along the river and took pictures. The last jutting sheets of ice were slowly sagging into the water. A couple locals were sitting on the rocks down the bank, playing guitar over the rushing current. We saw a beaver sitting on its haunches, watching us curiously.

Cat didn’t offer much information about her past. I didn’t ask. Instead she laughed and made fun of me as I waded into the shallows of the river, posing for ridiculous pictures. I felt young.

The first time I kissed her, we were crouched in the shallow end of the local swimming pool. Beads of water trickled down her forehead, collected in her eyebrows. Our lips touched tentatively.

She smiled at me, then stood up and headed for the change rooms.

Everyday when I got off work, I would wait on the corner until she arrived on her bike. With each day getting longer than the one before, the sunshine stretching into the evening, we had more and more time together. We skinny dipped in a half-frozen lake, jumped off a bridge, hiked through the nearby foothills.

Then Sean showed up. The first night he arrived, she laid in my bed with tears trembling in her eyes. “Why do I have to choose a life?” she asked. I massaged her shoulders, kissed her ears. She moaned and swore, mostly at herself, then stormed out of my house. I stood in the doorway, watching her go.

She started smoking. She stopped sleeping. When I asked her if she loved him, she nodded. She wondered what would happen if he stayed. I waited on the corner for her each day, but she started to be late. Once she didn’t show up at all.

I tried to focus on my job. A couple evenings she came out with me on assignment, taking pictures while I jotted notes. She loved to watch me interview people, told me she was jealous of my job.

I felt bad asking her to choose between us, but I was panicked she would disappear. I hated the idea of her being dragged back to the town she hated. A week after Sean arrived she took him back to the airport and said goodbye. That night she cried with her face against my chest.

I tried to kiss her but she turned away.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

As we lie by the river, I can feel Sean between us. The afternoon warmth feels like insects scrambling across my skin.

“Do you think anybody would care if I took off my shirt?” she asks. Without waiting for an answer, she peels off her T-shirt and leans back on her elbows, tiny pink breasts exposed.

Some teenagers came to our earlier spot, stood near the bank drinking beer and jumping off the rocks. Cat, disgusted, gathered up our stuff and took us further downriver. She likes being alone.

I attempt to write in my journal, but find myself writing what I want to say to her. My notes turn into a dialogue as I imagine her responses, but I can’t bring myself to say anything out loud. I reach out and take her hand in mine, but she slips it away after a couple seconds.

The first thing Cat did when Sean left was hack off most of her hair. A couple days later, unsatisfied with the pixie cut, she asked me if I would shave her head. 

We biked to Superstore and shoplifted a razor. 

After it was done, she stood in front of the bathroom mirror. “This is it,” she said. She ran her hand roughly along her scalp. Hunks of hair were scattered across the bathtub, clumps caught in the drain. 

She loved that her new haircut made people mistake her for a boy. On Canada Day she laid topless in my lap for over an hour while hundreds of people milled around us. No one even noticed. She debated going for a mohawk, but decided against it.

Lying by the river, I tell her I want to jump in the water. I invite her to come with me, and she shrugs. She’s on her period, doesn’t feel like getting wet. Together we pick our way through the sharp slate rocks, hopping from ledge to ledge.

I stand on a rock several feet above the water and try to convince myself to jump. Cat sits above me, her leg dangling down, with a distant look on her face.

“You’re beautiful,” I say.

“Fuck off,” she replies, with a smile.

I look into her bleary eyes. She’s getting freckles, a smattering across her nose and cheeks. She gazes down at me. I know that things can’t be the same. There is a heaviness in her shoulders since Sean left.

“You gonna jump?” she asks.

I hesitate only for a moment, then toss myself into the shadowy current. When I surface, gasping from the cold, she claps and smiles at me like a small child.

Near the end of the summer, I drive Cat up to the edge of the Alaska Highway and drop her off on the shoulder. She’s decided to hitch-hike back to B.C., and has spent the last couple of days giving away and selling most of her stuff.

While we drive I barely talk, hiding behind my sunglasses. I’m on my lunch break and don’t have much time.

Cat lugs her backpack out of my car, then shrugs at me. Her hair is a thick stubble. After a long, quiet moment she kisses me and says goodbye.

As I drive away, I see her stick up her thumb in my rearview mirror.

Easy Makeover: Taking A Neutral Living Room From Plain To Polished http://ift.tt/2o41tth

I love a baller room makeover as much as the next person (Lisa Vanderpump’s closet? I could stare at it for HOURS), but scrapping all of your existing stuff and completely overhauling every nook and cranny of your room isn’t always realistic, especially if you don’t have a Housewives-sized budget. Sometimes using what you have and just getting a few new things to revive the entire room is the sweet spot (have I mentioned how much fun I had staging my friend’s house to sell a few weeks ago?!). So when my best friend asked for some help with her bare bones living room, I immediately started shouting out ideas and scribbling sketches like a lone weirdo playing solo Pictionary.

You can see where we started below shortly after they moved in. Pretty sparse with just a rug, sofa, armchair, and tufted ottoman. It’s their “formal” living room, so the TV and big cozy sectional is elsewhere – but this room still gets lots of use (by the kiddos, for holiday entertaining, for spirited adult game nights, etc). After the move she was feeling so underwhelmed by how her existing stuff looked, she actually had convinced herself everything needed to be craigslisted so she could start over.

In her mind that felt like the only option since she was so tired of the things she had, and she just couldn’t imagine them ending up in a space she truly LOVED. But her current reality = three young kids (and a cat). So after some pretty deep talks about what we coined “that sticky fingers and rogue Cheerio dust life” – all off which will be around for at least five more years – she realized she would much rather wait a few more years to update her sofa and rug with something awesome that her kids would probably be a lot nicer to when they’re a little older.

Enter Captain Optimism stage right (that’s me, btw – my other aliases include Sergeant Enthusiasm and Petty Officer Peppy).  I was all “Woah, woah, woah – this stuff is neutral enough that it can work with anything! Let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater.” Then we took a long conversational detour to discuss how weird that whole baby/bathwater expression is, but eventually circled back to the task at hand: me successfully convincing her to Tim Gunn it in there (aka: make it work).

By just moving in some stuff she already owned and purchasing a couple of accent chairs, a pair of super inexpensive bookshelves, and three pieces of art that she adores – we breathed a ton of new life into her old stuff (btw, her neutral sofa and armchair are more tan and less pink in person than they look in these pics). Plus everything we added will not only work with this existing stuff, but should she replace their seating or their rug down the line, well, these new pieces will play nicely with whatever else she chooses.

The main “projects” in the room were the gold display shelves flanking the couch. They were a DIY effort that we tackled together and they only required two $50 Ikea shelves, this gold spray paint (the primer is built-in so it’s just one step, and it’s the best gold color I’ve found), and this marble contact paper. As for the how-to details, after we assembled the frames of each bookshelf (leaving the actual shelves aside), we spray painted both of them with a few thin and even coats of gold spray paint and allowed them to cure outside for two days so they wouldn’t stink up the house or get dinged up when we brought them inside.

Here’s a detail of the bottom shelf (you can see the top shelf in the pic above). All of the middle shelves are glass, but the top and bottom were solid metal – so when we dressed them up with the marbleized contact paper, we only covered the visible side of each one. It was sorta like wrapping a present where you just fold an inch or so of excess around the backside of each one. The contact paper didn’t affect the fit, so they still slid right into place. It was an idea that she found on Pinterest a while back and had always wanted to try – and it could not have been easier.

The other high-impact addition was the art. The large piece on the back wall is this photograph from Minted (in the 40 x 30″ size with the whitewashed herringbone frame – my favorite of theirs). The other two that were added to the mix are Paris View and Day in Paris (both 24 x 18″ with the same whitewashed frame).

The art was definitely the splurge (the total for all three pieces came to around $480 with a discount code that we googled) but thanks to such inexpensive Ikea bookcases, and the fact that they kept their existing sofa/chair/rug/ottoman instead of rebuying any major pieces, the makeover still came in under budget. Best of all the art has become their new favorite thing in the room, especially because of what it represents to them. She and her husband go to France once a year (he goes for business, and she gets to tag along for fun) so they love having a little bit of France in their living room. I know, I’m jealous too. #NeverBeenToEurope

The funny thing is that everyone who walks into the room says “Woah, that’s such a cool picture of your husband!!!” because he wears a bright orange jacket like that all the time. So people literally think the guy in the foreground is him, which leads to some pretty hilarious “I can’t believe you think I can take a picture like that!” revelations from my BFF. Sometimes she’s like “oh, you know, just a little snap I got on my phone...”

Also: this is Kitty Purry (named after Katie Perry’s cat by their oldest child). I like her because she matches the art. Also because she’s a sweet kitty who only occasionally makes my eyes itch thanks to my stellar cat-intolerant genetics.

Let’s bring it back around to the before shot one more time, just to show one last “zone” that we added to fill out the room.

The only other purchases for the room were the two $65 ghost chairs that we added on the exposed edge of the rug, which help the seating area feel more complete and extra functional (now we can squeeze in two more butts on game night). They actually already owned two of these acrylic chairs in their dining room, so I just dragged them in here to test them out. We liked that the clear acrylic lets your eye travel through them (if they were larger or more solid it might feel like a jarring “wall” of chairs in your face). Once they were sold on the look, they just ordered two more so they weren’t short on dining room chairs. And that side table between them? That’s a basket they already had turned upside down. How’s that for using what you have?

We also brought in (and anchored!) a leaning mirror they already owned for one last hit of gold in the room. She got it a few years ago at West Elm, but it’s back in stock in brass (it tends to go in and out, so here’s a similar one on Wayfair). And for the accessories on the shelves, we just used stuff she had around the house – some magazines stacked horizontally, framed photos, boxes, vases, and these perfectly-sized lamps that put out a nice glow at night. Most of their books live on built-ins in the other room, so these shelves got to be more decorative and light.

For anyone else who is faced with bare shelves, or crazy cluttered ones, my best shelf-styling tip would be that a few larger scale items are better than a bunch of little busy or piddly looking ones, and I love decorative boxes, stacks of mags and books, framed photos, and a few vases – perhaps with some cheap grocery store flowers if you’re feeling fancy (we paid $4 total for the two bunches that you see in the after pics).

This probably isn’t the last time you’ll see this house (you’ve actually already seen their son’s room, and we’re slowly working with them on a bunch more). But I just couldn’t wait to share this tale of turning a room’s frown upside down with just a few new items. Total time spent: around 5 hours including planning, measuring, assembling, spray painting, marble-papering, ordering things online, and hanging prints.
