Boston Manor House - a newly restored Jacobean house near Ealing
Tumblr media
Boston Manor House counts as a Jacobean house (just) being built in 1623 by a widow, Mary Reade. It is quite near Brentford which saw action in the first Civil War, but apparently wasn't damaged.
Tumblr media
Its just re-opened after extensive restorations. Pride of place goes to the spectacular plaster ceiling in the main state room, although the guide wasn't impressed that they'd removed the later colouring to show it in all its original whiteness.
Tumblr media
The details of the ceiling were mainly female personifications of abstract qualities. On the fireplace they had a religious motif - the sacrifice of Isaac.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apparently these type of stripy hangings were popular in the 17th century, although I've never come across them before.
Tumblr media
This wallpaper from 1757 is unusual in showing classical ruins inspired by the Grand Tour and perhaps early signs of incipient romanticism.
All in all a unique and rather special place.

Day out to Rufford Old Hall yesterday. Was owned by the Hesketh Family till 1936. Was built around 1530 and was added and changed over time. Inside, it has an incredible carved wooden screen dating to 1500s.

I love your poll about the house museums, i have been to many because it was an interest of my mother's growing up. I wanted to share about tour-able mansions in Rhode Island, USA. They are full of history and feel incredibly haunted.
Oh, in Newport? Yeah, those are really cool!
They were summer homes for the hyper-wealthy of (mostly) New York City, and really functioned more as event venues than family houses. The scale and grandeur of most of them boggles the mind:
Tumblr media
(The Breakers, built in 1893-95 for the Vanderbilt family. This is the grandest of them all, but the one I've visited- Rosecliff -wasn't far behind.)
One of my friends used to work at the mansions- one organization runs all of them, as museums -and she says some are haunted. I'm not going to tell you which ones, though; that seems like it would spoil the fun.
Happy touring!

Detail of a fireplace at Blickling Hall, Norfolk. Blickling is a fine Jacobean house by Robert Lyminge built on the site of an earlier house. It was extensively remodelled in the eighteenth century.

Barrington Hall
Hi guys!!
I'm sharing Barrington Hall. This is the 21st building for my English Collection and inaugurating the red brick collection.
I decorated most of the house ground floor, for reference.
History of the house:
The Barrington family, long-established in Essex since the Conquest, initially resided at Old Barrington Hall. This estate, shown on a 1624 map, included substantial structures, orchards, fish ponds, and brickyards. However, in 1564, they moved to the Priory at Hatfield Broad Oak, signaling their ascent as country gentry. Throughout the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the family engaged in legal disputes over rights to Hatfield Forest with the Rich family, eventually securing a portion of the forest.
Sir Francis Barrington played a significant role in government, receiving a baronetcy in 1622. The family also had investments in New England and Ireland during this period. Despite their growing wealth, the Priory required repairs by 1700 and was demolished, causing the Barringtons to relocate to Great Waltham. The family seat at Hatfield Broad Oak was eventually rebuilt in the 1730s by John Shales Barrington, although he left it unfinished, leading to his reclusive life.
In the 19th century, George Alan Clayton Lowndes acquired the estate and made extensive neo-Jacobean renovations to the house and gardens, which were lauded in contemporary publications. After multiple ownership changes, including the purchase by A.H. Gosling in 1907, the property was later sold to the British Livestock Company and is now owned by CPL Aromas plc. The original parkland has been divided, with only 12 hectares surrounding the house remaining as part of the current estate. The landscape includes notable trees such as ancient oaks, as well as remnants of historic avenues and garden features.

The outdated style I dislike most is the decade of the 70s. This home is an example of why. (I bought an 80s house and it was so dated that I couldn't afford to redo it, and that's the problem you have to consider when buying, even if the price is lower.) This one, in Ottawa, Illinois, was built in 1970 & has 4bds, 3ba, $325K.
Tumblr media
Okay, this is just silly. Cut the hedges back, the lions look like they're in giant green butt cracks. Let's go inside- I hope you enjoy this 70s throwback.
Tumblr media
The oval leaded glass door with 2 side lights were the gold standard, as well as the pony wall planter, spindles and red carpet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 70s introduced large stone fireplace walls. In contrast, there was fussy, fancy, metal (or plastic) grill work, as seen in the doorway.
Tumblr media
The 70s changed the color of wood- it became extremely dark, through the magic of Jacobean stain. The style included faux brick (which was not yet perfected and looked so faux), carpeted kitchens and ornate cabinetry with plate rails.
Tumblr media
But the most distinctive feature was the kitchen lamp post. Even if I gutted this kitchen, I would keep that lamp post, b/c it's such a classic. I've even seen them built into the middle of kitchen tables. (Note the faux brick backsplash.)
Tumblr media
Variations of this beloved bedroom set were in so many homes. Even my grandparents had one (and I inherited it). Plus portraits of the children on black velvet.
Tumblr media
Wallpaper, fancy and flocked, even if it didn't match the style of the room.
Tumblr media
There was a Toile Revival, too.
Tumblr media
And, big, dark heavy furniture with fancy foo-foo ruffled fabric or fabric with eyelet borders. Notice the architectural detail of the bed on a platform with a heating vent for practicality.
Tumblr media
This fireplace was redone- they removed the mantle, in favor of a shelf, and framed in the hearth so they could display statuary.
Tumblr media
It was also the advent of the wall-to-wall carpeted bathroom and tub draperies.
Tumblr media
Note that red shag carpeting fades over time, and also pills, balls up, and irretrievably matts down. Check out what looks like a lighted nativity scene in the fireplace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah, the manufactured "colonial" creations. Hanging metal fireplaces adorned with eagles and sofas with spindles, pleated skirts, and pastoral or historic Americana scenes. Wherever there was an opening, put up a fancy railing and/or panel.
Tumblr media
What a bonus! A home beauty salon! Also, note the textured paneling and another popular feature- jigsaw cutout wood valances on everything from the kitchen cabinets to windows, to walls. (Also, there's a good example of how red carpet fades, in the corner.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some outer details (note the cutout valance even on the roof of the house).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't expect a farm, but there're definitely barns and a silo on the property.
Tumblr media
3.67 acres of land.

It's actually a Jacobean house! Not a repro! This was, for me, the exciting revelation early in chapter VII of The Valley of Fear, the most recent Letters from Watson. While this makes me embarrassingly wrong, being anywhere in the vicinity of Sherlock Holmes is a recipe for being embarrassingly wrong about something, so I feel myself to be in good company.
This implies Birlstone Manor is something along the lines of Ludstone Hall, which is massive and impressive.
Someone who grew up with English history needs to weigh in on whether "King Charles I hid here" was a sly joke, similar to ones in American novels where every realtor claims "George Washington slept here" for old houses on the eastern seaboard. There seem to have been military campaigns in that part of the England in 1644, but there seem to have been military campaigns everywhere in England, Wales, and portions of Scotland in 1644.
Hidey-holes had already become an architectural tradition by the time Birlstone Manor was built. The National Trust has a lovely tour page of Elizabethan "priest holes" here.
It looks like we're winding ourselves up for another plunge into American history, with the fictional Vermissa Valley, in the coal and iron mining hills of Pennsylvania. So let's get ready with a map of iron and steel producers and a separate map of coal mining sites. These don't narrow the location much, but don't spoiler it for me! Part of the fun is figuring out from clues in the text what exactly is going on.
