The Disney Showman (Unexpected Musical) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
Nostalgia can be a powerful force. The Greatest Showman portrays P.T. Barnum as a dreamer who wanted to entertain people above all else. There is a very similar air to the general perception of Walt Disney. Both men were, of course, much more complicated than their public personas, but the parallels were too strong for the PattyCake guys to resist. Especially since both Tony and Layne had worked at Disney World, performed on Disney cruises, and collaborated on projects with the company at large. So combining the Showman music with a visual retrospective of Walt's life was a perfect fit.
Details:
title: Unexpected Musicals — The Disney Showman
performers: D.J. Muto, Paul Kaleka, & James Keaton (Walt Disney); Eli Jacobson (Roy Disney / featured vocals); Jonathan Timpanelli & Joey D'Angelo-LaJoie (Robert & Richard Sherman); Olivia Adkins (Snow White model); Amy Garton (Julie Andrews); Isabella Muto (Shirley Temple); Jacob McAlister, David Kotary, James Berkley, Domenic Servidio, Chadd Winston, & Eduardo Marques de Oliveria (animators); Alexander Browne (animator / Mouseketeer); Rachel Copeland Evans, Gizelle Pagan, & Darlene Chudinski Henry (Mouseketeers); Brad Pettit (Mouseketeer / chimney sweep); Jason Tibbs, Michael Rundy, Matt Hudson (chimney sweeps); Lauriel Marques de Oliveria, Grace Flaherty, & Sonia Roman (inkers & painters); Hannah Laird, Tony Wakim, Layne Stein, & Lilly Kolb (featured vocals)
original songs / performers: "Rewrite the Stars", "A Million Dreams", & "Come Alive" by the cast of The Greatest Showman (2017); "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" by James Baskett in Song of the South (1946); "I Got No Strings" by Dickie Jones in Pinocchio (1940); "You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly!" by Bobby Driscoll, the cast of Peter Pan (1953), & The Jud Conlon Chorus; "Mickey Mouse Club March" by the cast of The Mickey Mouse Club (1955)
written by: "Rewrite the Stars", "A Million Dreams", & "Come Alive" by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul; "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" by Allie Wrubel & Ray Gilbert; "I Got No Strings" by Leigh Harline & Ned Washington; "You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly!" by Sammy Cahn & Sammy Fain; "Mickey Mouse Club March" by Jimmie Dodd
arranged by: Layne Stein & Tony Wakim
release date: 2 March 2018
My favorite bits:
combining the Disney fanfare with instrumentation from "Rewrite the Stars"
young Walt sketching Oswald the rabbit, followed by adult Walt creating Mortimer Mickey Mouse
the newspaper headline noting that Disney's first studio failed at the start of "Come Alive"
those extremely perky Mouseketeers
Tony and Layne doing their best faux-Cockney accents for the chimney sweeps' vocals
showing footage from the actual parks
elder Walt coughing as he walks away, a somber sign of the lung cancer that took his life
returning to young Walt still dreaming of ♫ "the world I'm gonna make" ♫ that we've just seen
Trivia:
The actors playing young Walt Disney and Shirley Temple are siblings.
James is yet another of Tony's fellow alumni from the "Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue" show at Universal Studios, having played BJ himself for many years.
The subtle special effects makeup that transformed James into Walt was created by Andy Wright at Makeup and Creative Arts, and was applied by Rick Underwood.
This video was filmed on location at the MBS Equipment Company warehouse space in Orlando, using some of their lighting equipment. There is also additional footage from both Disneyland and Disney World.
PattyCake garnered some praise from several of their fellow former theme park cast members in the YouTube comments for both the accuracy of the behind-the-scenes imagery and the celebration of the Disney legacy.
As they did with their "La La Land" video, PattyCake highlighted their attention to detail with a series of "Double Take" posts on social media, comparing shots from the video with the iconic moments they had recreated.
As a bonus, the thumbnail for the video itself is a recreation of a photo of Disney that was also used as the cover art for PBS's episode of American Experience about him.

Submariner Summer 34
Ay Namor Nation, this is a big one! #SubmarinerSummer part 34, and we are doing one of THE comics of all time, Tales To Astonish #100: Let There Be Battle! After sharing the title for dozens of issues, we finally get the Astonish crossover of Namor vs. Hulk. Behold the cover!
Stan Lee is scribing this one himself, and lets us know our sense will be shattered. The great Marie Severin on pencils and Adkins on inks, Sam Rosen lettering. Title page has our Prince contemplating Hulk as he falls into a predicament, thinking of making him an ally
Namor recaps his predicament, being banished from his people after being falsely believed a traitor (thanks to Plunderer, and a shitty screen). But since he's matchless in the sea, and Hulk is Strongest One There Is (on land), and they're both outcasts...well, the logic is clear
So off Namor goes to make an ally and make the surface pay. Things go smoothly right away (/s), as the second he surfaces, someone shoots at him. 'Merica. Turns out, old foe the Puppet Master was in the middle of a heist, and now Namor has spoiled it.
This throws Puppet Master into a rage, but he soon stumbles on an idea...since he can't strike at Namor directly, how about using *Hulk* against Namor? So, one radioactive puppet later, Hulk bursts out and is sent to destroy Namor! Namor's plan of alliance is now sunk
From here? Its game on, as Namor and Hulk descend into all out battle on Miami beach. Let me tell you, if you're unfamiliar with Marie Severin, she is absolutely one of the Silver Age great artists. This woman was highly underrated, and this ish a shining example
Excuse me if I gush, but the scenes deftly show the two fighters' power, their figures bold yet fluid with the motion in the panels easy to follow. And there's plenty of motion as Namor seeks to take the battle to the air, then the water, and Hulk accidentally obliges
The oceanic recharge brings Namor careening back; IMPERIUS REX! A quick dip in a pool gives Namor a clear advantage but ends with a Hulk leap.
I'm just giving some highlights of the tussle, btw, there's a LOT of action packed into this 22-pager The military's called in, though they don't actually do anything as the titans clash; love how often Hulk or Namor burst out of the panels in this issue, too powerful to contain
And in one excellent page we get the obligatory moment to remind, Namor has his own code, his own honor, and foreign though it may be at any moment in the midst of destruction he might just come and save any or all of us; that's just how he rolls
Namor finally maneuvers Hulk into the sea, and from there...well, Hulk continually loses ground 😁
Hulk is also getting sick of the voice of the Puppet Master in his head and that isn't helping either, a distraction that isn't even properly feeding his anger
Namor launches a colossal assault using his speed and strength to toss Hulk around helplessly; that's right, mi gente, we have reached the "going in circles for the win" stage of Silver Age fights
And, this also spells doom for Puppet Master, as the giant waves wash his whole hideout away; double L for Puppet Master, double W for Namor, who doesn't even *know* he's defeated Puppet Master along with the Hulk
And yes, the fight is finally over; the last relentless assault has left Hulk washed up, and only Bruce Banner remains, unconscious on the sand. Namor doesn't know from Bruce Banner, though, and so confused he wanders back to the sea. So much for his plans for alliance against the surface
You all might have guess that I love this issue, so I am in no way impartial. But listen, this is peak superhero action. Nay, peak heroic epics: its Herakles vs Triton, Gilgamesh vs Enkidu, Jacob vs the Angel, Krishna vs Chanura. Lee and Severin were both firing on all cylinders
If you agree, feel free to let me know; if you don't, drop a line as well and let me where you think it falls short. We're about to come to a great transition for Namor (and Marvel) so things are about to shift, and I'm interested in where we're all at on Tales to Astonish
But we're not *quite* there yet, although we are at the beginning of something new, so NEXT we cover Tales to Astonish #101: ...And Evil Shall Beckon!

Cases with Major Updates in 2023, Part Two.
As stated in part one, many cases featured on this page had major updates during the year 2023. Below is the second installment of cases this year that made progress during this past year. Here's to hoping they are resolved in 2024!
Once again, since many of you are already familiar with these cases, I provided a brief TL;DR description with each, but links to the full case write-up are there as well!
The Disappearance and Murder of Hailey Dunn. TL;DR update: During June 2023, the murder charges against Shawn Adkins were dropped without prejudice. Hailey Dunn vanished in Colorado City, Texas at the age of 13 in 2010; her remains were found in 2013. Adkins has been a suspect since Hailey's disappearance in 2010. Since the charges against him were dropped without prejudice, the State hopes to charge him again in the future.
The Disappearance and Death of Taalibah Islam. TL;DR update: Human remains were found in Fort Worth, Texas during March 2023. In June 2023, those remains were identified as that of Taalibah Islam. Taalibah originally vanished in 2006 at the age of 20. The main person of interest in the case is currently incarcerated on unrelated kidnapping charges.
The Disappearance and Death of Paige Johnson. TL;DR update: In July 2023, Jacob Bumpass was found guilty of tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse in relation to Paige Johnson's disappearance and death. Paige vanished at the age of 17 from Covington, Kentucky in 2010. Her remains were found 10 years later, in 2020. Her loved ones hope for more charges against Bumpass in the future.
The Disappearance and Murder of Suzanne Morphew. TL;DR update: The remains of Suzanne Morphew were found in Saguache County, Colorado during September 2023. She had been missing since May 10th, 2020. Her husband, Barry Morphew, was previously facing murder charges in the case, but the charges have been dropped without prejudice.
The Disappearance of Tyreek Pettigrew TL;DR update: In November 2023, Brandon Smith (33) was arrested and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in relation to Tyreek's disappearance. Tyreek originally vanished from Moncks Corner, South Carolina in February 2018. Although Smith is being charged with murder, Tyreek remains missing today.

Some lore question about brothers keeper second captivity arc (with Jake this time) I might have missed the answers to these questions somewhere in the masterlist so sorry about that, if you could point me in the direction of the answers I'd appreciate it
Why are the 4 (Volkov, Ben, Jake and Dmitri) on an island? Aren't they in Russia somewhere? Where's Ilya and Andrei? Did they die or smth? Is it only the 4 of them or are there more? Why did Volkov and Dmitri make Ben and Jake pretend to be into them? Just to fuck with them or was some part of it genuine? I ask bc I srsly didn't expect Volkov to kidnap Ben AGAIN (or his brother) and Volkov said they can work up to pet names, implying they were gonna do that again. Also, when Ben and Jake are rescued, are Volkov and Dmitri killed? I couldn't tell if they were from what I read and I wanna be sure because fuck those guys
So, there are some things here that I cannot answer because of upcoming plot points. That said, here is what I can answer…
The fics where they are on an island are set AFTER Ben has been rescued from his first captivity and then recapture with Jake a couple or three years later. For the most part it is just the four of them. (No I cannot say what happened to any other characters at this time. You will eventually find out.)
Yes Dmitri and Volkov made Ben and Hake pretend to be in to them just to fuck with their heads. They are incredibly sadistic. Basically they told each of them separately that if they would play along, then the other would be spared any torture or abuse for a full day. They both did it to save the other. The self debasement was part of the torture.
Volkov is ALWAYS fucking with Ben. Always. So I’m sure he has future plans to fuck with him even more in the future. He’s a bastard.
Lastly, the fate of Volkov and Dmitri is intentionally vague. The main story line will get there eventually. I have not publicly revealed what happens with either of them. Not yet. Sorry for the stuff I can’t answer. And sorry it took me so long to answer. Thank you for the ask.

jake rubbed his eyes, his head throbbing from lack of sleep and over-indulgence in drink. he looked at the class blearily, scribbling his name on the whiteboard. “i won’t bother with roll call because i really don’t care if you show up or not,” he grumbled as he took a sip of his coffee.
“now, can someone give me a recap of last week’s lecture?” he addressed the class wearily. “how about you,” he said pointing to a random brunette in the back row. “do you remember anything from... oh fuck.” he murmured, a wave of recognition washing over him. it was her. the girl he woke up next to, the girl who didn’t let him get a wink of sleep last night. “fucking kill me now,” he grunted under his breath.

La La Land (Unexpected Musical) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
The movie musical La La Land is set in the modern day, but with the aesthetics of the 1950s. The PattyCake guys decided to lean even further into the trappings of Hollywood's golden age to evoke the stars of the early 20th century in their most iconic roles, as well as the many folks behind the scenes who help make the magic happen. They didn't quite have a cast of thousands, as was often boasted by the epic films of the era, but they did gather quite the crowd of performers, mostly from among their circle of theme park friends.
Details:
title: Unexpected Musicals — La La Land (Classic Edition)
performers: Olivia Adkins (Marilyn Monroe); Rachel Copeland-Evans (Judy Garland); Monica Carlile Edwards (Audrey Hepburn); Felix Deneau (Humphrey Bogart); Erin Cline (Bette Davis); Derek Ostrem (James Dean); Colleen Ella Defeo (Gloria Swanson / Elsa Lanchester); Bebe Caliberr Mercy (Elizabeth Taylor); Elijah Babel (Charlie Chaplin); Jack Defeo (Boris Karloff); T. Robert Pigott, David Kotary, & Jacob McAlister (directors); Amy Garton (wardrobe); Hannah Laird (script supervisor); Jaimz Dillman (reporter); Greg Hernandez (lighting grip); Melanie Simpson (ingenue); Jim Harrison (camera loader); E. Michael Evans (leading man); Jonathan Shane Ferrell (makeup artist); Laura Mansoori & Alex Colvin (showgirls); Deanna Quintero (hairdresser); Brayshawna Bates (flapper starlet)
original songs / performers: "Another Day of Sun", "Someone in the Crowd", and "City of Stars" by the cast of La La Land (2016)
written by: all songs by Justin Hurwitz, Benj Pasek, & Justin Paul
arranged by: Paul Vesco, Layne Stein, & Tony Wakim
release date: 22 July 2017
My favorite bits:
that brief Flectcher cameo 🐶
Olivia's perfectly breathy Marilyn voice
the contrast of having "Another Day of Sun" mostly led by the stars while "Someone In the Crowd" is mostly the crew
the instrumentation adding more jaunty piano to accompany Chaplin's dancing
the film clip interlude that includes "Will.of.Oz" footage, then turns back into live performance
gradually building rhythmic and harmonic complexity until they reach the final unison line
Trivia:
Rachel had first worn the blue gingham dress as Dorothy Gale in PattyCake's "Will.of.Oz" music video, which was released the previous December.
Olivia was already well versed in Marilyn Monroe's mannerisms, since she is a character she'd been playing for several years at Universal Studios Orlando (and has continued playing since).
Felix often works as a Dean Martin impersonator, but stepping into Bogey's trenchcoat and fedora for the day suited him, too.
Derek is one of Tony's fellow "Beetlejuice Revue" alumni, having played both Wolfman and Dracula for the last decade of the show's run. (He's also married to Stephanie Trilli, who has played Sarah Sanderson in PattyCake's "Hocus Pocus" pieces.)
Robby was also one of the many Draculas in the "Beetlejuice Revue", and he's been playing Marlin in the Disney World "Nemo" live show for over a decade. (Among many, many theme park and theater roles.)
Makeup artist Jonathan Shane Ferrell of Makeup & Creative Arts was actually applying the Frankenstein makeup to Jack Defeo's face while also playing legendary makeup artist Jack Pierce, who worked with Karloff on the 1931 film. Jonathan had been a makeup artist for the "Beetlejuice Revue" at the end of its run.
Jack and Colleen were also already comfortable in the monster makeup, as they are yet more "Beetlejuice Revue" alumni, having played Frankenstein and the Bride in the 90s and early 2000s.
