Code Geass
I’m gonna spoil a bunch.
I raided someone’s Code Geass tag at lunch today and remembered that I really loved Code Geass. I don’t know if I’d ever watch the whole 50-ish-episode saga again but I really loved it.
My brother wanted me to watch it with him in 2008, and pitched it to me as “It’s like Death Note mixed with Gundam Wing!” and my brain went ????!!!!!!!!! and we dived in, and his description was right. It’s a character like Light Yagami if he had a real conscience, and loved his family and friends, and his tool was an actual magical power instead of a magic item he found, and he led a political rebellion against a dictatorship, with mecha. It was beautiful and stylish, well-paced and full of drama. I loved Lelouch very much.
His friend-and-secret-rival Suzaku was up there, too, I mean he was boyfriend material as hell, absoLUTELY loyal and brave and kind, but Lelouch was a clever bastard with a good heart and his plans floored me all the time. Suzaku’s good, too, though. He piloted the best mech. (They were called “Knightmares”)
In season 2, enemies have erased Lelouch’s memory and installed a fake little brother in his life who grows to actually love him, and dies to save his life. My brother and I were looking forward to that brat being thrown away like a tissue. But his death really affected me. Oh my god can’t forget the scene where Lelouch in disguise says he is separating the subjugated nation of “Area 11″ (Japan) and my brother demanded that we adjust our seating so he could watch my reaction when Lelouch declared the birth of The United States of Japan.
At the very end, Lelouch makes himself the evil emperor of the dictatorship he was overthrowing to unite people in their hatred against him. He arranges for his best friend to assassinate him in public to help nudge the political landscape towards world peace in the wake of the “evil dictator” being taken down. He is stabbed through the chest and falls down towards his completely innocent little sister, who just wanted to live a peaceful life with him. She holds his dead body and collapses on him, clutching him, sobbing, while people are cheering for her brother’s death around her. I almost cried at that scene. I love my brother so, so, much and some nightmare landscape where I’m standing over his dead body while people screech in happiness makes me metaphorically retch.
Life was a lot easier when Code Geass was new and popular. I miss it. I’m queuing a bunch of content for it now.
