I made a Oiran Jirou AU some time ago, and I have been obsessed with him in this costume and whole AU in general ever since. Here's my pieces with this costume so far.

I love the whole Oiran aesthetic. Obviously mine is not entirely accurate. I just like my artistic liberties. The first one is the first I made, and it's taken from a Kabuki doll book, so it's at least something, and I didn't fully pull it out of my hat.

Jiroutachi

See, Jirou is already just tol (6′2″/190 cm) and he’s pretty strong since he’s an Ootachi. BUt like having his master be also tol and buff as hell? Oh man Jirou will just hang off of their arms and preen, “LOOK AT MY BELOVED, LOOK AT HOW STRONG THEY ARE, AREN’T THEY AMAZING”

LoVES IT WHEN THEY CARRY HIM, HE LOVES IT WHEN THEY CARRY HIM LIKE A PRINCESS, HE’LL CLING ON TO THEM AND LET OUT ALL KINDS OF PRAISES, “Oh my knight in shining armor! At this rate I won’t have to fight at all~<3″ he still will, no worries. He won’t let a single hair on your head be harmed.

If you happen to be taller than him, Jirou will honestly be pouty about it. “I wanted to be taller, damn it!” but he won’t complain much if you hug him when he’s smaller. It just means you have more love to go around and your hugs are just super duper waaarm.

Jiroutachi is the one who is obviously oogling your muscles whenever you show them off, will let out some whoops and whistles and is just super supportive of how you look!

Don’t think that he wouldn’t be protective of you. Jirou may not look like it but he’s extremely protective. It doesn’t matter smol or tol, Jirou adores you no matter how you look. Damn right he’ll yeet a sake bottle at a dude and crack it over their heads. Don’t test him.

Jirou, drunk or not, adores it when he is able to cuddle his tol and buff saniwa, who he loves more than life itself. He loves how he can trace their muscles and the shape of their body, massaging them whenever they ask or just doing it outta no where.

This doesn’t mean Jirou won’t try and pick them up as well. He can and will, drunk or not. He loves spoiling his beloved, tall or not. He adores it when they spoil him but damn it, let Jirou spoil them too!!!

IF THEY ARE THE SAME HEIGHT OR IF THE SANIWA IS TALLER, THIS MEANS THEY CAN SHARE CLOTHING. IT’S VERY FORM FITTING AND JIROU LOVES SEEING HIS LOVE WEARING HIS CLOTHES ITS SUPER DUPER NICE

Jirou’s favorite thing to do is sitting in his partner’s lap, he doesn’t have to worry about crushing them anymore! He will also pull them into his lap. All laps GOOD.

If anything, Jirou’s affection for a tall and buff saniwa won’t change at all from a normal saniwa. If they do not feel comfy in their body, he will do everything in his power to make them feel like they are the ruler of his heart - and they are. He’ll pick them up when they fall and just will love them and all of their faults.

Taroutachi

Tarou is 195 cm/6′4″ and he is a bit more...mmm, I almost wanna say conscious about his height? He’s a bit more worried that he seems almost too much for his saniwa, tol or smol or whatever. He feels a lot better about his status as a tall bastard when he arrives at the citadel as there are plenty of peeps of all shapes and sizes! It doesn’t make him any less lonely though. However, when he begins a relationship with this equally tall(er) and strong Saniwa, he’ll have a habit of always thinking much more positively.

He doesn’t interact much with the mortal realm like Jirou does so when he first begins to be physically affectionate with them it almost takes him aback. There is a light flush to his pale cheeks but it’s obvious that he likes it, with his gentle smiles and the way he looks at his master with so much love???? Im crying??????????

He gets super embarrassed whenever they pick him up and carry him around like a bride. He flushes and clings on to them, but when he does he feels their muscles under his touch and dude? His brain just...short circuits? Like how long has it been since he’s properly been held like this? He never was wielded much in the past but now? Dude? Tarou might get ADDICTED to this feeling.

I personally think that Tarou is a bit touch starved. Swords are ultimately meant to be used after all. He will shyly admit that he loves it when you two have physical affection, even better when you hold him. He may love being the big spoon but he feels much happier when he’s the lil spoon.

Tarou doesn’t mind if you are taller than him, if anything he’ll appreciate his own height more if you’re taller. Yes he is a bit shy about his height but if you two have a loving relationship I think he’ll be happy to see someone his size - a humans especially - since you wield him so well. His words, not mine.

If you hold some insecurities about your height and how buff you are, Taroutachi will oh so gently shut those words down. He begins with kisses on your shoulders, on your biceps, anywhere he can reach that you will allow him to. He will do nothing but lavish praise upon you and tell you why he loves you so much, pointing out things where your height and muscles have helped - going back to the times you held him the most which makes his heart skip a beat.

Like Jirou, whenever you two cuddle, Tarou will be amazed with your body. He traces your muscles, finds your legs to be the most beautiful thing, and just hugging it out man? It’s SO GOOD.

Tarou will also love it if you two share clothing! Sure the patterns and styles may vary from you to him but he wears your clothing with pride.

Yes Tarou is protective as well. He isn’t like Jirou who will happily get into a screaming match and pull out an entire Excel spreadsheet on why he loves them but Tarou is calmer and probably has power points on why the fuck he loves his tol and buff master, you FUCK OFF.

Tarou will adore the person he loves, tall or not. He finds it adorable if you two are the same height or if you are taller. He loves that you two are just existing in the same space and enjoying life together!

Mini-Review: Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru

In the year 2205, the past is threatened by the historical revisionists who seek to change it. Protecting history becomes the task of a boisterous band of swords that are brought to life, including the glamorous Kashuu Kiyomitsu and the kindly Yamatonokami Yasusada. Beyond their battles, these legendary swords from different eras lead charming daily lives.

Look, I loved this. There are currently two 12-episode seasons and I am desperately hoping for a third. But even so, this was very different than what the description led me to believe. It sounds like it’s going to have a lot of fighting, right? The concept of time-traveling history defender sounds solid. So I expected a lot of this:

I got, um, a small amount of that. But mostly what I got was:

Yes, the show focuses a lot on the daily life part. The time-traveling history protection is mainly there for select character development. But, like I said, I ended up loving this.

The series starts with this adorable child sword’s first day in the Citadel. See, all the characters are swords from Japan’s history, given human form by a mysterious but much beloved magical master. (Never seen by the audience, and they/them pronouns used at all times.) Since the swords live and train here when not being sent on missions, new swords get a tour and introduction to everyone. This is convenient for plot reasons, letting the audience get settled.

Hmmm, I thought, as we met the 10th character with no end in sight, I wonder if this was based on a video game? I’m getting that vibe.

Blue-guy, Yamatonokami, and Red-guy below, Kashuu, are the deuteragonists of the series, with Yama-Blue getting more focus in season 1, and Kashuu getting more in season 2. (Also, please join me in admiring Kashuu’s beautiful painted nails.)

This is really helpful, because with such a large cast, things would get lost if they tried to give everyone character development. Instead, we have these two that get more than one episode of development, a nebulous group of like, 20-ish that pop up in multiple episodes, enough that you can probably remember their names, and the rest of the cast really only pop up with lines a few times.

Oh? Didn’t I mention? There are a lot of characters. 62 swords, in fact, 40-odd of whom appear in the first season.

With so many characters, it can’t get deep. Instead, most episodes focus on a handful, whether it be “X is self-conscious about his size but helps the team on the mission by being tall” or “Kasen, who has for some reason taken on the role of Main Laundry Doer, tries to steal Yamanbagiri’s never-removed cloak for washing.” Sometimes we get familiar tropes like “two characters compete to get Position X while the regular person is gone,” or “two characters who don’t like each other are forced to work together and end up singing about it while cooking.” Or that perennial favorite, “unable to convince a loner to make friends any other way, the group puts together a host club.”

It ended up being so fun, because the show doesn’t try to overdo it. This isn’t the mess that was Miracle Train--there’s no attempt at trying to make things really dark and mysterious. This is mainly full of hijinks by a bunch of pretty dorks who live together, most of whom have personalities like “big brother” or “gym maniac” or “alcoholic” (that’s Jiroutachi, purple in the first gif) or “nice grandpa who drinks tea all day and looks 25 and can kill you” (Munechika, below) or “daddy,” who I already wrote a post about because I heard them say “SWORD DADDY” and died.

Everyone is so darn likable, even the loners and rude characters. It was pure fun--not million-laughs-a-minute comedy, but something I could sit down, know that I was going to watch characters be friendly and funny and resolve issues and get a happy ending, without getting monotonous.

Verdict

English dub? Yes, and with so many (SO MANY) voiced characters, if you’ve watched any amount of Funimation-dubbed anime you’ll probably recognize a few. Having just finished Kamisama Kiss before starting this, I was like HEY THAT’S TOMOE when one pink-haired sword starting speaking, and immediately identified Koro-sensei from Assassination Classroom in season 2. This isn’t a bad thing! It’s more of an Easter egg.

That said, I loved Kashuu’s voice, which I hadn’t heard before. There was something so captivating about his light and casual voice via Garret Storms. (my ears: this voice is friend-shaped)

Most things sounded fine in English, but my favorite thing besides Kashuu’s voice was definitely the two separate episodes where characters just break out into song while cooking together. 10/10 would watch again.

Visuals: The major thing that clued me in to this originating as a game wasn’t just the amount of characters, but their designs. These are fun, pretty, colorful designs. Characters are visually distinct so even if you can’t keep track of names, it’s easy to keep personalities separate. Plus, the show as a whole is colorful and light.

Worth watching? Hi, this is a show that explains none of its magic, but includes pretty sword-boys who paint their nails and have friendly swordfights and take daytrips to the beach and occasionally kill monsters so that history won’t change. It’s so much fun.

Important note: there is a separate show called “Katsugeki Touken Ranbu,” made by a different studio, that seems to be closer to what I initially thought I was watching: more action, more serious. I haven’t watched it yet, but be aware it’s a separate thing (although based on the same mobile game).

The big brother title. How does it work in the minds of our beloved swords?

Well, it doesn’t depend on age at all, in most cases. It actually depends on personality (how caring or responsible the sword is) and height. Hence why Horikawa (even though he’s still technically the oldest anyways) is still considered the “eldest brother” in the Kunihiro trio. He’s known to be the most caring, least problematic, and the most responsible out of the three.

Lets think back to the Toushirous. Ichigo is obviously not the oldest, as pointed out in the wiki, however he is considered to be the “eldest brother” by Awataguchi tantous because of how responsible and caring he is for all of them. Also, he’s known to be the tallest.

Jiroutachi and Taroutachi are not actually brothers. This we know, due to various sources posted on our blog, however, he still insists on calling Taroutachi his “big brother” despite being older and not related to Taroutachi. This is because Jiroutachi has the utmost respect for Taroutachi and believes that he deserves the title “big brother”. Not just because he’s taller (obviously), but also because is the one who cares for Jiroutachi the most. He’s the one who looks after him like a big brother, even though Jiroutachi knows that he probably doesn’t deserve the type of care, due to his recklessness and drunkardness.

And that, my dear lovely young saniwas, is how the sibling system works in the logistics of sword.

I wish all of you a peaceful and happy Christmas with your family and beloved ones and that you get to stuff your stomach with the most delicious Christmas roasts, cookies, gingerbreads and of course mulled wine hehe! (｡•̀ᴗ-)✧

Hopefully none of you will have to work all night long on Christmas Eve just like me, but at least I get to see my sweet little brother’s smile on Christmas Day again because we will be watching my all time favourite Christmas movie “A Nightmare before Christmas” oh I just love this movie!

A long time ago in a certain citadel far, far away (my nerdy self couldn’t stop herself from including this smol Star Wars reference forgive me) certain Sword Warriors were preparing for the most important holiday ..

being your attendants for the day Tomoegata and Hasebe forced you to stay in your room while everyone else was buzzing around the citadel to prepare for the evening

‘Aruji, please leave the preparations for this festive event to the other Touken Danshi. Your only task for today is to relax until tonight.’

even though you were more than thankful for this offer you couldn’t help but worry a little knowing them all too well

… and rightly so because getting to celebrate a peaceful Merry Christmas in your Citadel? Dream on it’s more like a Merry Crisis

when the evening broke on they finally allowed you to leave your room and led you down the dining hall where a festival of dazzling lights and a Christmas Banner spelling something like ‘Marri Kurismas’ was awaiting you

your heart nearly lept out of your chest when everyone rushed forward and scream-yelled ‘MERRY CHRISTMAS ARUJI!’ at you

‘You did all of this for me? Oh my –thank you so much - everyone– I – just - Merry Christmas to you as well!’

you were nearly crying of joy when you realized just how much effort everyone must have put in decorating the Citadel for you

‘How much trouble did all of you went through to prepare this for me?’

Swelling with pride Hasebe grandiloquently waved your worries away ‘It really wasn’t that much trouble’ 

cue angry stares from everyone else and a more than grumpy Oodenta whispering ‘Yeah well not for you Mr. Loudmouth’ under his breath

now let’s rewind to the morning of Christmas Eve and what was happening while you were cooped up in your room wrapping your Christmas presents for everyone

let’s go back to the first crime scene: The Kitchen

it was quite obvious but calling the kitchen a chaotic mess was way understated

chocolate frosting and powder sugar was splattered everywhere but on the cookies (meaning on everyone’s faces)

Souza and Kousetsu were tasked with baking and cutting out cookies and Sayo decorates the most delicate and beautiful snowflake, flower and tanuki cookies fight me on this

Azuki was smitten with this tradition from the start, because now he could give everyone sweets and mother them to his hearts content and went into full sweets-making-mode while Kenshin was eagerly buzzing around him

being the Citadel’s own Grinch Ookurikara tried to escape just on the mentioning of another celebration but got hold back by a dangerously smiling Shokudaikiri who was holding a dough roll like a battle axe 

‘Kara-chan of course you’ll help too, will you?’ 😇 😇 😇

Translation: ‘Get in the fuck*ng Christmas spirit or I’ll cut you down’

cursing under his breath he and Yamanbagiri were tasked with hanging up the fairy lights 

which brings us to the second crime scene: The Dining Hall

poor men just wanted to be left alone but instead had to help hanging up chain of lights and garlands while some drunk on eggnog Fudou, Nihongou and Jiroutachi were singing some very disturbing Christmas canons they had composed themselves

cue Yamanbagiri muttering to himself: ‘Maybe I should hang myself instead of these Christmas lights’

bigger swords like Tonbokiri, Oodenta, Otegine and Hachisuka were tasked with logging a fine Christmas tree and mistletoes in the woods (’Really? You’re making an original Kousetsu like me do something unspiritual like that?’)

If you’re asking what Jiji was doing then I can tell you that this lazy old man was sitting far away from the hustle and bustle and got himself pampered and entertained by Kogitsunemaru and Shishou

man just because you’re old doesn’t mean you can just ditch work to everyone else

i’m just kidding i love them very much and it’s probably good that Jiji wasn’t helping he’d probably just be in the way anyway lol

as usual Gokotais tiger cubs had escaped again and were leaving flour footprints everywhere, cue Ishikirimaru running like a madman to clean up behind them while poor Gokotai was bawling his eyes out again

they even left some on Kuniyuki’s face when they trampled over him but that lazy bastard was so busy sleeping he didn’t even mind that (how can anyone be so lazy, honestly? i am so in love)

meanwhile Kasen was in his room trying to write an elegant and refined Christmas banner but just couldn’t remember what this festivity was called like

‘Marri Kurismas. Yes yes, that’s what it was called like I’m sure of it!’ (almost honey, almost..)

after the Christmas tree had been installed in the dining hall (it only took 15 attempts to even get it inside and that one time where Kane-san and Mutsu nearly got buried under the tree because they were bickering who was stronger again) the Toushirous, Monoyoshi, Hyuuga, Aizen and Hotarumaru were decorating the tree with self-made ornaments out of little gems, shells, pie cones and candles

Ichigo and Yagen carrying every Tantou on their skinny shoulders through the whole citadel so they could hang up ornaments everywhere, can we agree on that?

they’re the best brothers in the world i’m sobbing why are they so perfect? 

in the meantime busy bees Horikawa and Urashima were running around and motivating everyone by serving Hot Chocolate whenever someone seemed tired out (these boys are angels guys, angels)

Namazuo and Honebami doing a leg-up so Honebami can be the one to put the star on the Christmas tree.. yeah that’s the kind of imagines I’m living for

sounds wonderful doesn’t it?

well it nearly ended in bloodshed when Tsurumaru and Taikogane who were throwing snowballs at each other nearly knocked down the Christmas tree the children had lovingly decorated

which leads us to crime scene number three: The Garden

unlike Germany for the last 10 years your Citadel had been blessed with a white Christmas and the Garden and roofs were covered up with a beautifully glistening blanket of snow

and what could be better than having a real snow fight and go sledding right?

since Tsurumaru got banned from helping he immediately had the glorious idea of having a snowball war in the garden

Tsurumaru, Sada-chan, Aizen, Hotarumaru, Koryuu were on one side while Kashuu, Yams, Yamabushi, Iwatooshi and Imanotsurugi were on the other team

and there were only some minor casualties like the snowball that flew right into Hasebe’s face when he was screaming out of your window

back to Christmas Eve and handing out of presents

You had knitted everyone something warm like gloves and scarfs and little beanies for the Tantous so they wouldn’t get a cold when they have to battle in winter, and even stitched everyone’s crests on their scarfs

let’s skip the tearful and cheesy speeches of thanks everyone was throwing alright?

well but one moment was worth mentioning, and that is Hizamaru crying over Higekiri giving him a present even though he wrote his name wrong on the gift tag cue Iwatooshi patting both of them on their back ꉂꉂ(ᵔᗜᵔ∗)

at least he tried

of course Micchan surpassed himself by light years and made you the most beautiful yule log you’ve ever seen

maybe Touken Danshi aren’t the best at celebrating Christmas but they always have good intentions and it became a happy Christmas with a lot of laughter (and eggnog) because being with your loved ones is the most important thing on Christmas after all
