I'm reading "A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking" by T Kingfisher and it's WILD because you've got some really real and heavy hitting quotes like
"You expect heroes to survive terrible things. If you give them a medal, then you don't ever have to ask why the terrible thing happened in the first place. Or try to fix it. How else are you gonna have heroes?"
but also, a very major part of the plot is basically this scene from Shrek 2
#its a good book#i've been working my way through t kingfishers stuff lately and it absolutely slaps#a wizards guide to defensive baking#books#the stromboli speaks#shrek 2

ursula k leguin said borders are the real problem we gotta dissolve borders and meant it about whole countries and about individual people....lay aside patriotism and lay aside pride and all the artificially constructed barriers that divide us and breed conflict and let yourself be driven by your love for the people around you......kindness and trust are the only way forward....all seemingly opposing forces really exist in unity with one another....light is the left hand of darkness and darkness is the right hand of light

I love uncle Rick as much as the next person, but I'd appreciate it if he at least kept up with the proper timeline is he's going to insist Percy is still 17 in these books. This should be around 2010-2011 based on Percy's 1993 birthday, but he just made a reference to moving the entrance to the empire state building, which didn't happen until 2018. I'm still loving Chalice of the Gods, but the insistence on keeping Percy in high school kind of takes me out of it a little bit.
#percy jackson#chalice of the gods#pjo#annabeth chase#rick riordan#its a good book#and im going to keep reading them#i just wish hed keep the timeline correct

My book gave me legit shivers, like spooky.
" " And were the dinosaurs in fact attacking us?"
"Yes."
"They would kill us and eat us if yhe could?" Malcom said.
"I think so."
"The reason i ask," Malcom said, "is that I'm told large predators such as lions and Tigers are nit born man-eaters. Isn't that true? These animals must learn somewhere along the way that humans are easy to kill. Only afterwards do they become man-killers."
"Yes, I believe that's true," Grant said.
"Well, these dinosaurs .Just be even more reluctant than lions and tigers. After all, they come from a time before human beings- or even large mammals-- existed at all. God knows what they think when they see us. So I wonder: have they learned, somewhere along the line, that humans are easy to kill?" "
-Jurassic Park, pg 134 by Micheal Crichton
I mean it's a Thriller, and it's supposed to thrill you. Give you that zing of trepidation/fear up your spine, but like wow.
Also, as much as I love the movies, there is something cooler about the book so far? Like its feeding me so much science background that I'm getting a better idea of the implications. And how the movie tamed down all the scientists and other characters. And the inciting incident makes more sense because of all the background information.
(Also the level of dinosaur knowledge at the time, and the realistic reactions of normal people. Just... yesss.)
Not done yet though. Only like 2 people have been killed by dinosaurs and that was just the set dressing.

“Missed me,” I said, loud enough for my voice to carry into the chamber I’d left behind. A limb struck the wall, hard enough to make a cracking sound. Cold air blew past me, frigid enough to tear the wind from my lungs. When I’d caught my breath, I had to resist the urge to laugh. It was frustrated. Was I a little crazy? No. Well, yes, maybe. But that wasn’t exactly it. “I’m not so afraid anymore,” I murmured to myself. “For better or worse.”
loud cheering

so i read this book today called Hell Followed With Us (very good, highly recommend i finished it already it took me less than six hours) and Nick reminds me so much of Regulus
like, the morally grey bits of him of course BUT i imagine his meltdown with Erin is exactly how Regulus responds to being overwhelmed also
and and and the not liking kissing and physical touch could also be him!! my personal headcanon for Regulus is that he thinks mouths are gross and doesn’t like kissing but does enjoy a good cuddle or hand holding but just!!!
if uve ever read this book please speak to me about it none of my friends have read it, if not you should totally check the tw list and then read it if thats still comfortable for you because it was so good i loved it so very much
#regulus black#hell followed with us#andrew joseph white#please read it#its very religious trauma#like i had a panic attack reading bc Trauma#but its FINE#its a good book#i love it sm#i wanna make a bead lizard now#so badly

i think theres this idea in the general public that the "best" fanfic gets turned into real books like 50 shades of grey. but the truth is that the best fanfic can never be published as an actual book because its intricately woven into the canon material so its inseparable even if you change the names
#no shade (ha) to 50 shades. ive never actually read it so idk if its good#but imo the idea of creating an au fanfic thats so divorced from the original work is boring! why are you even making a fanfic atp#the only good fanfic is when you can tell the author loves the source material and uses it#the best fanfics ive ever read could never be published as actual books because it wouldnt work without the context of the original story

book im reading uses person, or per for short, as a gender neutral way of referring to people and its neat that piercy was trying to do that, especially in the 70s, but also there is a word already to do that and of all other words person is not great in terms of how it sounds and such
#woman on the edge of time#its a good book#that is just a kinda awkward thing#that isnt really needed
