Isadora Duncan’s Car
One of the most intriguing figures of the early 20th century was American-born dancer and choreographer Isadora Duncan. Despite her American roots, she spent most of her life in Europe where people highly respected her. She became a celebrity among the artistic elite of the Art Deco age. Unfortunately, her untimely death was bizarre and somewhat of a mystery. Isadora was in the company of her Italian lover and mechanic on a warm September night in 1927 in Nice, France. The couple went for a ride in her convertible car and Isadora was sitting in the passenger seat. During the ride, her long silk scarf got caught up in the wire wheels of the car, strangling her and also causing fatal injuries.
Tumblr media
The driver rushed to the hospital, but there wasn’t anything they could do and there weren’t any witnesses to the case. A full 90 years after Duncan died, the community is divided on which car she rode in back then. During her lifetime, Isadora owner many prestigious machines. Most historians claim that a Bugatti was the car in question. However, recent research shows Isadora also owned an Amilcar, another long lost, obscure French brand. Her lover is long gone and could not provide any information, so nobody knows what happened to this car.

How did Miss Duncan die!? I need to know how one dies by way of scarf. Was this just a throwaway line for comedic effect?
Isadora Duncan was a real person - a renowned dancer - and sadly that was a real thing that happened. A scarf she was wearing around her neck became entangled in the axle of a car she was riding in.
Tumblr media
Mitzi was, in her morbid way, commiserating with her story, as she'd been mired in tragedy and things the media deemed quite scandalous in the years prior to her death.

Hi! 👋 Could you please do 20 and 23 for the Quagmire triplets for the character ask game? :)
Hi Ven ! Sure !!
20 (Weird headcanon)
Quigley
i have literally SO many headcanons for Quigley but I'll try and hold back and only share a few. (I'll refer to Quigley with they pronouns because that is my headcanon !)
if they had been raised in the 2000s, would absolutely have thomas the tank engine or cars bedsheets. so embarrassing
couldn't take serious photos, always had to be pulling a face or doing bunny ears or something
tried to pierce their ears with a safety pin and lemon (did not go well.)
disastrous handwriting. Like incomprehensible.
Isadora
gay awakening was Veronia Lake in I Married A Witch (dir. René Clair)
went through a goth phase (after discovering Mary Shelley and Edgar Allen Poe) where she attempted to dye all of her clothes black. They came out brown.
Duncan
tried to pull a prank on Carmelita Spats by balancing a bucket of water on a doorframe and have her walk through, getting drenched. Forgot to let himself out of the room first and drenched himself.
obsessed with lava lamps
23 (Future headcanon)
Quigley
felt so betrayed by Jacques leaving, that they completely turned away from VFD. Lost a lot of their love for cartography and it took a long time for it to come back. They began to prefer sketching landscapes and people they loved.
discovered David Bowie (this depends on your theory of when ASOUE is set) and he changed their life. Became obsessed with Ziggy Stardust and embraced gender fluidity through makeup, piercings, shiny clothes, etc. learnt to love themself :)
finally got that ear piercing they had botched when they were younger.
actually became really good friends with Fiona. She taught them that it was okay to view the world with more criticism. They got along and were actually really similar. Bickered a lot.
moved to a big city with Duncan and Isadora and got really into the world of music, art, freedom, self-expression. They probably joined a band at some point, no doubt.
Isadora
in the big city, joined a sapphic society and made friends who loved poetry (and girls).
got her poetry published in the paper on multiple occasions, but anonymously. She wanted to spread the beauty of poetry without getting attention for it.
opened up to the idea of writing prose too, and learnt that she was really talented in that area, too, joining writing societies and book clubs and learning so much more about literature. it gave her the opportunity to express herself in more ways than one.
her and Klaus (if reunited) absolutely became an unstoppable best friend duo. They were practically unseperable, and he was in a lot of the same book clubs with her. He worked at one of their local libraries and let her sneak in the back to write in the staff room while he ate his lunch or read on his break.
Duncan
aside from writing journalism, he actually got really into photojournalism. He loved the peace of the dark room and the process of developing photos. He got into the habit of photographing his friends and siblings to immortalise them and kept his favourite pictures in his shirt pocket.
got an internship at a newspaper (NOT the daily punctillio, lol) and had a niche in foreign correspondence, (with the rise in use of the telephone) and he made so many connections across the world. Learning about so many cultures gave him a sense of freedom after feeling so trapped post the death of his parents.
and a dunklaus headcanon, since I can't hold back: after he and Klaus started dating, he would very occasionally sneak coded messages into the newspaper, just sappy stuff saying he missed him and hoped he was having a great day :)
interviewed Lemony Snicket once without knowing it was him.
This was so much fun !! Thanks so much for asking :)

So we know Isadora & Duncan Quagmire are named after the dancer Isadoda Duncan because she died tragically; but she also had a pretty unfortunate life. Let me just summarize some of her story for you:
- her father, Joseph Charles Duncan, embezzling funds, leading to
- divorce of her parents, (well, also the fact that Joseph wasn't faithful) which lead to
- the family being in poverty (side point, there were three siblings, like the three siblings in most of the VFD families)
- Joseph and his third wife (sketchy) and his daughter with said wife DYING IN A BOAT ACCIDENT WHEN IT CRASHED INTO ROCKS UNDER MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES (???!!!!) and is considered the "greatest disaster in the history of the Atlantic Transport Line to date". Oh and here's a picture of the MASS GRAVE
Tumblr media
Wow okay anyway
- this isn't exactly "unfortunate" but she dropped out of school at 10
- she worked with Augustin Daly's theater but didn't enjoy it due to her free-spirited nature, and was thoroughly unhappy in America
- she moved to London (which is an unfortunate event alone) and was quite successful (girl's getting a break) but she didn't like touring or contracts because of the commercialism
- therefore she opens a school in Germany to teach dance, adopts six girls (good for her ig) and calls them the "Isadorables" (WHAT) and also they're her protégés; cute but then she tries opening a school but it closes due to WORLD WAR I
- moves to the United States but she plans to leave, narrowly avoids dying at sea like her dad (ok I'm not kidding; she was going to go on the RMS Lusitania, which was TORPEDOED BY THE GERMANS AND HELPED LEAD AMERICA INTO THE WAR, this is all very ironic because she considered the sea inspiration for her dancing)
- she ended up moving to SOVIET RUSSIA which was not smart bc they didn't support her work like they promised. She had established a school so she left it to one of her daughters/protégés/Isadorables
- oh, somewhere during all this, she has three biological children to three different husbands - THE FIRST TWO PROCEEDED TO DROWN (drown???? Oh my gosh this is a pattern) because their nanny accidentally (?) drove her car into the RIVER SEINE.
-with the first two children dead, Isadora is so desperate for another that she BEGS A STRANGER to get her pregnant. This baby also DIES shortly after birth
- marries a poet, then divorces him soon after (this poet btw, Sergei Yesenin, had a bunch of affairs, got arrested a bunch of times, was accused of anti-semetism, and then committed suicide-by-hanging in a hotel room. Wild.)
- okay so at this point Isadora's going through serious depression. Her three biological children are dead and she feels like she's lost some of the Isadorables to old men, and so her performances are getting more scarce.
- her reputation is tarnished by being drunk in public, her financial struggles, and her now-scandalous love life. She spends the years working on her autobiography (which only gets published posthumously) supported by her few remaining friends and family
- here's the part you've all been waiting for: Isadora Duncan dies on September 14, 1927 at the age of 50. Her silk scarf gets caught in the wheel of the automobile she was riding in, right in front of the person who had given the scarf to her as a gift. Apparently, she was flung out out of the window and died on brutal impact with the ground, almost decapitated by the scarf.
On that note, thanks for reading so far!! Please note that all of this is sourced from her Wikipedia page as well as a few other Wikipedia pages. Here's a picture of her:

i read about the death of isadora duncan when i was but a young ingenue of five years (she got strangled by her own scarf when it got caught in the wheels of her car) and ever since then i have been deathly afraid of my scarf getting caught in an escalator or the metro's rails or Literally Anything Else. though what a fashionable way to go it would be.

Randomity: Effable, Ineffable, Effanineffable
Note One: I'm not going to publish my works on AO3 for the time being. I won't go deleted my account, but it's going to be in a limbo of sorts. This is why I didn't link AO3, when I usually do here.
Note Two: This makes references to another work in the Randomity Series, Tying Laces, Worrying, and False Names: Not In That Order. While I do summarize the important parts, I recommend reading that chapter first before reading this chapter.
Fiona still can’t believe she had the notion that gas stations either have a nice indoor seating area, or a nice outdoor seating area. All of the gas stations she seen so far, especially since on the trip back westward to the Land of Districts, only had one or the other.
The gas station they’re at has both. And Fiona is eating her two corndogs and lemonade inside at the counter alongside Quigley, who said he wanted to discuss something with her. He’s currently in the restroom, with Fiona guarding his fruit punch slushie and turkey wrap.
Fiona sits at the counter, and unwraps the first corndog, setting it down on the wrapper itself as a makeshift plate. Fiona carefully rips open the first ketchup packet, for she doesn’t want the ketchup to potentially spray over Quigley’s food. And after successfully opening up the packet, Fiona squishes it all out over the corndog in a squiggly line.
“I always squish the ketchup into a pile and dip my corndog in there,” says a familiar voice.
“Well, I like squishing it over my corndog,” replies Fiona, spinning in her stool to see Quigley standing before her, with his slushie in hand. “What if you run out of ketchup to dip into? This method allows me to distribute the ketchup evenly.”
Quigley takes a somewhat loud ship of his slushie. He then sets the slushie back onto the counter, and takes a seat to the stool beside Fiona “Good point. But I never run out of ketchup. I make sure when I dip, I don’t take too much.”
“Never say never, Quigley.” Fiona spins back around to the counter, and picks up her corndog. “So, what it is that you want to talk about with me? I doubt you wanted to discuss how we eat food with condiments.”
“Nope. In fact, what I want to discuss with you is something regarding your stepfather.”
“My stepfather?” Fiona turns sharply to Quigley, who is now opening up the packaging his turkey wrap is in. Why would he want to talk about Stepfather?
“Well, it’s about your stepfather and…” Quigley hesitates a bit, picking up the turkey wrap in his hands. “And Hector.”
“Hector?” Fiona narrows her eyes at the younger boy. “What about them?”
Quigley doesn’t answer her. He instead, takes a large bite out his food, and stares out the window before them. Fiona sees Quigley is chewing slowly, looking outside with a strong intensity. Fiona doesn’t want to say Quigley is glaring, but there is something in Quigley’s eyes that is evoking some strong emotion in him. She couldn’t help but follow his gaze.
Outside, is the rest of the group.
Fernald is not easily visible as the others. He’s sitting inside the front seat of the mini-van, his face hidden from behind the car sun visor, taking a nap.
Duncan and Isadora are having their turkey wraps and soda at one of the two outdoor tables. They’re having what Fiona thinks is a discussion about Stepfather. Isadora is giving Stepfather a particular look, very similar to Quigley’s look from before. This has Duncan slapping her shoulder, which forces Isadora to look away sheepishly.
Stepfather is awkwardly nibbling away on his roast beef sandwich at the other outdoor table. His nose soon twitches, and Stepfather soon sneezes into the crook of his arm.
Hector, who is sitting on the hood of the mini-van with his coffee cup that has no sugar but an abundant amount of creamer (for Fiona witnessed it herself), then talks. Fiona isn’t sure what the handyman is saying, but she thinks Hector is saying, “Bless you.”
Fiona sees Stepfather looking upward at Hector’s directions, and is likely saying, “Thank you.”
“What about them?” repeats Fiona, slowly glancing back at Quigley. Fiona can now see that Quigley’s gaze from before is directed at Hector himself.
“You remember back at Crown City, when we were in Ella Jane Wile’s apartment, while the adults were out doing what was bartered?” Quigley is still staring at Hector. “We got bored of playing ‘Go Fish’ and we elected to watch a movie?”
“Aye.” Fiona takes a rather large bite out of her corndog. She chews for a bit, and then swallows. “To think that of all movies, we watched a movie adaptation of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. And it’s Cats of all things. Never thought Ella Jane Wile would have a DVD copy of it. I guess she enjoys poetry, like your sister, Fernald, and Stepfather.”
“T.S. Eliot is a popular poet,” says Quigley. “Anyway, for the last few days, I keep on thinking back to ‘The Naming of Cats’ number. About how cats have three different names. A daily name, a fancy unique name, and their secret name no one knows.”
“…And this relates to my stepfather and Hector how?” Fiona is completely lost.
“Do you know your stepfather’s full name, Fiona?” asks Quigley, his gaze now on her. “As in, his biological full name?”
“I only know his biological surname is Heng,” answers Fiona. She takes another bite out of her corndog, deciding to chew and talk this time around. “He says his first name is hard to pronounce due to past experience, especially within the organization.”
“Do you know that your stepfather’s first name starts with the letter V?”
“Of course! Some people call Stepfather by his first initial, but he prefers going by his last name. Your father was one such person to call him by his initial.”
“Dad did refer to him as V a lot,” says Quigley, almost softly. “Okay, so let’s say you didn’t know your stepfather’s first name initial, or his biological surname Heng,” continues Quigley. “Would you have reason to believe that Heng is his first name, had you heard it for the first time?”
Fiona takes another bite out of her meal, and once again talks with her mouth full. “Aye. All of my life, people refer to my stepfather as Widdershins. I would have instantly jumped to the conclusion his first name is Heng. How does this relate to a T.S. Eliot poem?”
Quigley sets his turkey wrap down, and picks up his slushie. He doesn’t take a sip out of it though. “In a way, your stepfather has three different names. The name people call him daily is Widdershins. His fancy unique name is his first initial, V. And his third secret name that no one knows. Or at least partly know about. Like you, and I assume your brother.”
He then stares directly at Fiona. It’s an inquisitive stare, curious of something. “Can you think back to what Hector asked you, when your Stepfather was with Ella Jane Wile?”
Fiona continues to eat her corndog, and thinks over Quigley’s question. She goes back to that moment in time, with Stepfather going with Ella Jane Wile into the kitchen. She thinks to how Hector without hesitation, steals Stepfather’s spot on the sofa, and—
“Care to tell me what why you two are going by different names, as well as to why your stepfather is going by the surname of Heng?”
“Surname…” says Fiona softly. “Hector said surname before I even explained to him.”
Quigley nods his head. “Using your answer as a baseline —especially in regards to your Stepfather’s preference on why he goes by Widdershins— unless I’m overthinking things…”
Quigley trails off, for he looks back out the window. Fiona couldn’t help but follow suit.
Fiona couldn’t help but stare at Hector, who still sitting on the hood of the mini-van hood of the mini-van with his coffee cup that has no sugar but an abundant amount of creamer.
Hector, the poor handyman from the Village of Fowl Devotee, who got suddenly caught in the drama that is her family, the Quagmires, and the Volunteer Fire Department, and took it all in stride when everything came crashing down.
“How could Hector have known in context, Heng is a surname?” finishes Quigley.
Fiona doesn’t know how to answer Quigley’s question.

Hi! Could you please do 🎭 and 😶 for the Quagmire triplets for the ask game? :D
🎭 A headcanon about what they lie about
All three of them lie about having eaten up snacks. The most normal question in the Quagmire household is "Who ate up the -snack of choice-?!" and all three, whoever it must have been, just go "not me".
😶 A random headcanon!
One time at age 8 they decided they could drive the car. Quigley was behind the wheel, Isadora had a stick pressing the pedals and Duncan sat in the backseat in terror (I hc asoue took place before you had safety belts in the backseat).
They drove 10 meters before accidentally driving down a small ditch. No one got hurt and they blamed the crash on the wind.

Awkward Endings
Another school assignment where we needed to illustrate a unique death. I chose the story of Isadora Duncan! A dancer choked to death by her scarf getting caught in the wheels of a car. I tried to make it as respectful as possible, I hope I succeeded. 😭

Traveling Duster for Women Motorists
Motoring duster
Silk
1910-15
Gift of California Hospital Medical Center
S2007.165.3
Like its 19th century counterpart, this early 20th century duster is a plain garment with only a modest amount of trim. A 1913 article titled Dusters Abound to Save Milady's Frock, noted that "color in dusters does not permit of a very wide latitude. They must adhere closely to some shade which does not show the marks of the road."4 Additional protective garments, including a hat and goggles, are also worn. Because windshields didn't shield the face from flying debris, goggles were an essential element of the motorists' wardrobe. Hats, hoods, caps or veils were also necessary, as they kept the hair from flying astray. As seen here, many women wore a hat and then secured the hat with a large scarf. When the car was in motion, the scarf would have been tied tightly around the hat and hair. The 1927 scarf-related accident which killed dancer Isadora Duncan illustrates the worst case scenario of what could happen when a scarf was not anchored securely while motoring.
Rather than practical and quick transportation, motoring in the early 20th century was largely a recreational activity. As automobiles became more affordable, many women became long-distance motorists, embracing the freedom of the road along with the responsibility of maintaining an automobile. A mini-genre of books emerged, focused on issues related to woman and the automobile. One of the most popular books in this genre was written in 1908 by Miss Dorothy Levitt , a British auto racer and motorist. You can read her book, The Woman and the Car: A Chatty Handbook here. Make sure to read chapter 2, which is entirely devoted to practical dress for women motorists.

As a matter of fact, a long, skinny, silk (very strong fibers) scarf was how Isadora Duncan died - it got tangled in the wheel and axle of her open saloon car and strangled her
SOURCE
Hello Tracy! so I just wanted to ask, What is this string - looking thing that Ivy is holding? (not the fan btw). I’m currently researching 1920s fashion right now and I would like to know what’s the name of it :3 thank you!
Tumblr media
It's just a a scarf or shawl that goes with the evening dress, dramatized a bit to mirror the other Art Deco elements in the picture.
Accessories like feather or fur boas, stoles, wraps, beaded or silk shawls, and chiffon scarves appear pretty commonly in 1920s fashion (especially if you're looking at celebrity glamor shots and promotional photos).
