A very vampirey de Romanus coven holiday 1: Saturnalia...
@deromanuscoven
Prefacing this by saying anything I say is not a moral statement on anyone else, merely an observation I have come to on my own. Shout out to @monstersinthecosmos, @shittyravencarcosa, @somevagrantchild & @covenofthearticulate who are all lovely. In any case, to the point, I think it is fascinating the way Lestat and Marius act as both foils and mirrors of each other. Both blonde and allegorically a.ssaulted into vampirism and repeating their respective cycles of violence, vs, Lestat is an anti-hero, doomed to fail and get back up like a Shakespearian comic hero for eternity, as opposed to Marius, who is a scholar, always endeavouring to do better, but failing simply by being a vampire/product of a time predating the 18th century. It is fascinating, and whilst I am personally not the biggest Marius fan ever, there's so much that can be said about Rice's universe and character building, and to Rice's credit, she excelled at it.

Christmas-Primarchs? Not this time! It's Saturnalia-Primarch Guilliman!
Tomorrow is 17 December, which marks the beginning of the five-day period in which Saturnalia is celebrated.
Saturnalia has been celebrated in Rome since the early Republic, and the rites and celebrations have of course changed constantly over this more than half millennium. One constant was the exuberant private festivities, strongly reminiscent of carnival, which sometimes also had the character of "the servant is now the master".
Since the 500 Worlds have strong Republic-Roman cultural borrowings (as opposed to the Emperor's Children's Empire-era borrowings - you can see what the Third Legion did to Saturnalia practically all year round), I imagine Saturnalia has a high priority there to keep the morale of the population high.
And, of course, the Lord of Macragge also participates. Lets his hair down, so to speak, and has ( carefully considered - or not) fun. This not only raises his morale, but also that of his legion and the citizens of Ultramar to a great extent.
So let's indulge him in the fun.

The First Fruits of the Earth Offered to Saturn by Giorgio Vasari. Italian, 1555-1556. Brown ink and wash over traces of red chalk. Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Description from the Met:
The drawing, surely from the hand of Vasari himself, is a study for an Allegory of Earth painted by his assistant Cristofano Gherardi in the Sala degli Elementi, Palazzo Vecchio, Florence. There are a number of differences between the preparatory drawing and the finished fresco. Vasari supplied a full description of the complex symbolism of this allegorical composition that is dominated by the figure of Saturn holding up a serpent that bites its own tail. This circular symbol is said to be an Egyptian hieroglyph, symbolic of the rotundity of the heavens among other things.
