i’m seeing a lot of fear today about Tumblr Shutting Down (Real) (Actually True) today and let peepaw seg tell you a story
i’ve been on this webbed site for fifteen years, believe it or not, since way back in the days of Tumblarity. now i was but a wee lad at the time, so i don’t remember the fine details, but rest assured, it doesn’t matter much for the story i’m about to tell you.
you see, i remember when tumblr was owned by tumblr. folk called its ceo (david karp) “daddy”, and were enthusiastic about his communications, even if on our own blogs, we’d bitch and moan about tumblr making changes to things we were used to. i remember the hubbub when tumblr removed tumblarity, and how this was surely going to be the end of tumblr.
all those fifteen (though it might be sixteen) years ago.
layouts changed, and we’d bitch and moan, and tumblr’d get sold, and we’d know for sure that This Was The End Of Tumblr, For Real This Time. this happened again and again and again, because this webbed site, you see, it makes no money, and companies, greedy things as they are, like money.
the porn ban, under the reign of YaHoo that was, was seen as another death knell. tumblr was going to die, for real, for sure, and i’m not proud to say that i was one of the ones who fell for it. peepaw seg needed to sow hir wild oats on other platforms.
now, i say this happened under yahoo, but it’s important to remember that this ban came in the wake of both the apple app store banning the tumblr app on account of real life csem being hosted on tumblr, and the new usamerican law SESTA-FOSTA being implemented, which made it so that companies such as tumblr would have to moderate the explicit content on them to make sure none of it breached sesta-fosta. tumblr, being a small fish in the grand scheme of thing, didn’t warrant that amount of financial effort on yahoo’s part, as the site was still not making any money, and it’s easier and cheaper to blanket ban than it is to moderate. all this to say, it’s important to vote, because if you don’t, your internet freedom will be curtailed.
and now we’re here, some sixteen years on, and i’ll say automattic has been not all good, but definitely not all bad for the site. they changed stuff we liked to our discontent (layouts), and added stuff we hated (live), but they also gave us stuff we like (polls) and an amount of open communication about tumblr’s inner workings not seen since the days of david “daddy” karp. and now they’re putting just a skeleton crew on the tumblr project.
and that’s going to be The End Of Tumblr For Sure For Real Actually This Time. Really. Promise. Abandon Ship.
and we come to the crux of this story.
which is that this has happened before, and it will happen again, because tumblr is surprisingly immune to making any money.
what we’re likely to see in the coming time is no new features (that’s reserved for projects that make money), and an increase in ads, until one day, and this might be in a few months, and maybe in a few years, there’ll be an announcement that tumblr’s been sold to one direction to a new company.
and we’ll start the whole rigmarole again. and this company might be good for tumblr’s userbase, or it might go against everything the tumblr community holds dear. no way of knowing which way it’ll go.
until one day, some parent company will have had enough, and will pull the plug.
but for now… well, i’m gonna sit here on my porch (blog), and we’ll see what happens. i'm not worried, tumblr’s survived worse things.

can't get over after everything they saw, simon's response is just "we'll find a crown to curse me in the right way." like here we have a universe that proves there is no happy ending for ice king & that the only way for him to find anything close as ice king is to make someone else miserable and yet its just. well there has to be a better crown. meanwhile marshall & gary are having their own little meet cute in fionna's apartment like turns out you CAN be happy in a world without magic and all you need to do is go grocery shopping with your friends!!

When Viktor says "The doctor was right" at the end of s2ep6, I wonder if he was actually referring to when he visited Singed's lab in s1 and Singed told him, "If you take this path, they will despise you. Love and legacy are the sacrifices we make for progress."
I do think that he's at least partially referring to the exchange in the greenhouse when Singed essentially suggests he sacrifice Vander in favor of guaranteed survival, to which Viktor replies, "I will not sacrifice his humanity for your cause."
I'm not totally convinced he agrees with everything that was said there, but he's certainly changed his opinion on the necessity of sacrificing people's humanity to achieve his vision/the glorious evolution.
Of course, both dialogues are connected if you consider love to be a defining trait of people's humanity (as many do). In that case, Singed's s1 dialogue could be translated to, "Humanity is the sacrifice we make for progress."
Viktor, however, will never be able to fully rid himself of his humanity for the exact reason that - again - Singed gives to Caitlyn and Ambessa.
"Why does anyone commit acts others deem unspeakable? For love."
The commune, the evolutionary goal, all of it is done out of love for people and a desire to help them... if the most effective way to help is to sacrifice their humanity, so be it.

#personal#internets#at this rate I've unfollowed both of the kinda.. 'controvercial' blogs I've been following#since there was a good chunk of actually good takes about how bad media is now and society and braindead internet 'activists' that-#-had it too good in their western countries and NEEDED to invent the reason to bully and excile people#could honestly resonate with it despite some other posts causing genuine pain. but mostly about terribly handled media#like you know that thing when corporations do terrible ass rep to pretend that they care for minorities#or artificially fabricate online backlash against their new actors to show investors that people show interest for their product because-#-of all the clicks on their article?#like discussion of this kind sorta keeps me sober#as a person with BPD I get contaminated by opinions VERY easily and as an autist I will believe everything if it is put together 'logically#that's why I HAVE to be exposed to every possible opinion so I am forced to make out my own rather than being swayed anywhere#but at this point those blog became kinda.. bad? like they don't just have 'opinions' but they hate just to hate#but now my dashboard and recs are full of exclusively things I can fully agree with and I am scared that it will rot my brain#like.. emotions are always the same. where is the 'wait WHAT' effect? where is anger? where is self-reflection?#but ALSO I realized that 'those' blogs are no better than those western 'warriors' I despise and they become narrow-minded too in the end#they advertise themselves as 'open to debate' only to always sway debate into trying to win and not into actually discovering the truth#I cannot trust any side because they're all narrow-minded and hostile but I cannot trust people without any side because-#-they're fence-sitters without morals that side with the winner#is there a secret third thing? like is there a way to not take a side but to still HAVE ideals and opinions?#my problem is that if I am not exposed to people that trash everything I value I forget why AM I valuing [a thing] to BEGIN with#and that won't do will it

so. been thinking a lot about pre-uniform naval years and how the noun is also an adjective and what that means vs the motley crew. how england’s maritime power was intertwined with piracy for much of its early years but turns her back sharply on the privateering system just prior to when navy uniforms are first introduced.
#honestly from a purely logistical and basic 'audience knowing what's going on' standpoint the navy can't *not* have uniforms in potc#(even tho not having them would make them very similar to the pirates including during acts of violence which is of course the point)#but james norrington is so interesting because he's coming of age right during this transition. *right* when governors are not supposed to#be personally partnering with pirates anymore and now have the authority to hang at a distance from england#(you can assume that's why governor swann was installed in the first place. clearing out the corrupt PR governor and replacing with new.#with a bright promising honorable navy lieutenant to enforce the new justice)#and he's swallowed all this rhetoric open-mouthed. because before the crossing one can assume he heard plenty of complaints about corrupt#officials making deals with pirates to serve themselves and costing the london investors money when the ships go down.#but its still very new and none of it is *really* cemented yet. which makes it so fun that the back part of his arc is this faith dissolving#+ becoming self-serving.#not even back part of the arc it's already dissolved by the time he says he can afford jack one day's head start. something that makes no#sense if you regard pirates as beasts not worthy of the graces of 'civilized' enemies.#AND THEN he chooses capital ...  just like England ... over pirates ...#✘; I HAVE SEVENTY TWO EXAMS AND I HAVE NOT STUDIED FOR ONE ( ooc )#this has no sense of coherency but idc i think it's something so im gonna post it anyway

F1 reveals huge interest from potential new investors in teams | 2023 F1 season
Formula 1 has seen a huge increase in interest from investors looking to enter the sport through new teams or existing competitors. Greg Maffei, the president and CEO of F1 owner Liberty Media, told an investor conference yesterday the rise in interest was a result of the changes they made after taking over the series in 2017. Soon after the purchase Liberty negotiated a new Concorde Agreement with the teams and FIA, F1’s governing body. “When we took over, we really had four goals with the new Concorde Agreement,” Maffei explained. “Create more on-track parity through putting a hard cap in. Putting in a less steeply-graded pay-out to the teams so that the bottom teams had a better chance to make more money. We put in a new series of designs which allowed more overtaking and we made the teams franchises so that the 10 had value.” Maffei said the success of the latter change can been gauged by the fact that a little over six years since F1 last lost a team, the FIA has received interest from several prospective new entries. “Manor was the 11th team and just before we bought into Formula 1, it went into administration in the UK and got sold for £1,” said Maffei. “The world has changed dramatically. “Have we achieved everything on our goals? No. But we have achieved an awful lot about bringing parity and about bringing the ecosystem to be healthy and about generating interest. The number of people who call and want to invest in a team, we could fill this room and more.” In February the FIA opened a process for potential new teams to apply to enter the sport. Under the Concorde Agreement, new entrants are required to pay a $200 million (£160m) ‘anti-dilution’ fee which is shared between the existing competitors. However F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali indicated that the value of teams has increased by so much that the fee may have to rise accordingly to ensure they are compensated for any loss in earnings if they have to share prize money with additional competitors. “The evaluation has to be done together to see from the technical perspective, from the sporting perspective, for the financial stability and to make the bigger picture, if a new team will give value to the league, to the sport,” said Domenicali. “The figure that we’re saying, the so-called anti-dilution payment, was done at $200 million just a couple of years ago – a couple means two years ago – because at that time no one would have expected that the value of this business would have risen up so much. “Today the situation is totally different, for sure. And it’s our duty to make sure that we protect the business the best way that we can and have a bigger picture.” While the likes of Andretti have attracted considerable attention to their efforts to enter F1, the series has seen many expressions of interest from those looking to invest in teams, said Domenicali. “Today there’s so many that would like to come. “There are teams that are more vocal than others. Some others are much more silent, but they are really expressing their interest. “As always in life, there is someone who has to make that evaluation. We are part of this process and we’re going to do the right thing at the appropriate time during this year.” Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free 2023 F1 season Browse all 2023 F1 season articles via RaceFans - Independent Motorsport Coverage https://www.racefans.net/

This side note is kind of just for my followers because I love to observe webs of influence and I would like to point out that, at least without context and not knowing either this poet/writer or the show involved, it IS possible that the show writers were influenced somehow by the poet’s work (not the other way around obviously bc their writing came first). For example, it’s not a coincidence that Cyborg 009’s finale is titled “From Here to Eternity” or that the ending itself bears similarities to Ray Bradbury’s “Kaleidoscope”; the concept of the cyborgs themselves was lifted from a magazine article; hell, the art style almost looks like the creator’s mentor’s style (Osamu Tezuka). Not to mention the character with code name “007” being British, or an American character named Jet Link (a reference to Jet Rink) and being part of a gang in NYC’s West Side that just so happens to be depicted dancing like they’re on Broadway…
Of course, I think the user asking the question directed it to entirely the wrong person 💀 you really ought to ask the creator of the show, if you’re wondering about what influenced its creation. How is this guy supposed to know anything about it 😭 no wonder he was annoyed
also maybe the connection being drawn here was just really stupid, but again I never saw this show so I wouldn’t know. Just saying not to dismiss the notion that maybe they are connected somehow. You never know!
Richard Siken… Richard Fucking Siken. You asked RICHARD SIKEN if his poems were inspired by BUDDIE. Gay men do not exist in people’s heads except as props huh?
