Traversing New Zealand by Water - Sailing the Interislander
The Solo Scale: While there’s an amazing view, this is a mode of transportation like any other. Check your bags, enjoy some food, and wander the ferry, but don’t worry about being on your own (the same as you wouldn’t worry on a bus or a plane). Traversing from the North to the South Island of New Zealand really comes in one of two ways — by boat or by plane (because, really, swimming would be…

Eastern Walkway
One of my favourite 2-3 hour walks in Wellington, the Eastern Walkway offers superb views and a decent workout as it heads around the mouth of Wellington Harbour along the coast of the Miramar Peninsula. The official Eastern Walkway starts at Tarakena Bay and finishes at the Pass of Breda, but I always start from Churchill Park, walk south to the Pass of Breda and then down to Tarakena Bay…

My grandpa told me all about how they couldn't even speak Maori in school. No one should be silenced like that.

Ferry Knitting
A perfect day for some impromptu ferry knitting. The interisland ferry is one of my favorite places to knit. Ah, the island life.

Today's problematic ship is the Kaitaki
Tumblr media
Kaitaki is a ferry operated by the New Zealand (Aotearoa) operator Interislander (a subsidiary of the national rail operator KiwiRail). On 28 January 2023, the ship lost power while en route from Picton to Wellington, initially adrift and later anchored outside Wellington for several hours with over 800 passengers onboard.
A subsequent inquiry revealed the loss of power to be caused by the use of out-of-date engine parts: an eighteen-year-old rubber expansion joint of the ship's water cooling system ruptured. The rubber expansion joints of this type should be replaced every five years, and should not be older than eight months when installed. The part onboard the Kaitaki was 13 years old when installed.

With all the lore that is apparently on the brink of happening, I am starting to feel like we got rid of the eggs not just to give people breaks for school but also because they wanted to take the QSMP into a more unstable state where lots of lore could happen and we could build to an interisland conflict without the eggs being in the way. Finding the eggs will happen once this larger conflict with the Federation is really resolved.

Having an interview with the CEO of Interislander on the breakfast news about the ferries being all messed up and unreliable at the moment, followed by an outro to the ads with Six Months in a Leaky Boat playing in the background is peak Kiwi

RNZ Pacific 1109 22 Jun 2024
9700Khz 1044 22 JUN 2024 - RNZ PACIFIC (NEW ZEALAND) in ENGLISH from RANGITAIKI. SINPO = 54444. English, "Saturday Night Requests" in progress. music, DJ'd by male announcer. QRM=slight cochannel from R. Taiwan Int. present during quiet parts until 1100z. Pips and news @1100z anchored by Phil O'Brien. The stranded Interislander ferry Aratere has been successfully refloated. The ship ran aground near Picton on Friday night after suffering a reported steering failure on a freight-only sailing. No one was injured and there was no environmental damage, KiwiRail said. Transpower says it has made progress raising a temporary tower in Northland, but it has been unable to fully finish the operation. Transpower's general manager of grid delivery, Mark Ryall, said crews had worked throughout Saturday on the new tower, which would restore one of two 220kV circuits to the region. However, they had been unable to complete the transfer of all the conductor wire to the tower before dark. The UN Secretary-General on Friday voiced profound concern over escalating violence and “bellicose rhetoric” between Israel and Hezbollah militants across the frontier with Lebanon, warning that one false move could trigger a catastrophe for the whole region and beyond. Public libraries are being sacrificed as councils across the country try to keep a lid on double-digit rates hikes. Cuts were being made to libraries across the country, Public Libraries New Zealand executive director Bernie Hawke said. That meant library hours and staff were being reduced, and some councils were considering closing branches. Hawke said he understood councils were facing "extreme financial pressure", but it meant communities would miss out, he said. The association had submitted on a number of council long-term plans advocating against cuts to libraries. Sports. @1104z Standards and Complaints PSA. @1105z Weather Forecast: showers, rain and possible thunderstorms, clearing by evening with some heavy falls. @1206z " Backyard fence antenna w/MFJ-1020C active antenna (used as a preamplifier/preselector), JRC NRD-535D. 100kW, beamAz 35°, bearing 240°.
