what do you think about this whole chandrayaan shtick
most of ISRO's engineering and scientific work is not really cutting edge, including this mission. 90% of the function of space programmes is propaganda and its so fucking hilarious that we spent all this money to come 4th. all of this is secondary to the fact that this is being sold as a win for hindutva fascists and will be invoked as defense when they defund public universities, gut research budgets and claim at the indian science congress that ancient india invented plastic surgery in hindu mythology. everyone read meera nanda science in saffron.

Aperçu of the Week:
"Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts."
(Winston Chrchill, former multi- & prime minister of Great Britain, historian and Nobel Prize winner for literature)
Bad News of the Week:
NATO is launching a maneuver in the next days. With 90,000 soldiers, "Steadfast Defender" is the largest since the end of the Cold War. What is being simulated - seriously, according to the official announcement! - is the defense "against an attack by Russia on NATO territory". Ooph... That's how far we've come now. Or again.
At the same time, the Ukrainian government is planning a massive increase in the conscription of its men. Hundred thousands additional soldiers are to go to war. With no combat experience, hardly any training and a faltering supply of equipment. This also acknowledges what observers have long assumed: that Vladimir Putin is relying on a protracted war of attrition. Unfortunately, from a strategic point of view, he is right.
In contrast to Russia's well-oiled arms industry, the West's military support for Ukraine is decreasing. The most important supplier, the USA, in particular, no longer has a budget at its disposal due to the refusal of a group of arch-conservative Republicans. A group that absurdly calls itself the "freedom caucus" - which apparently does not apply to support for a country that has been innocently attacked and is ultimately defending its freedom.
A colleague told me about his assessment that the election of Donald Jessica Trump at the end of November this year would probably have its good side too. After all, he would strike a deal with Putin on the price he would be willing to pay for an agreement and, of course ("America first"), stop all support for Ukraine at the same time. Which would then have no choice but to hand over Crimea, the Donbas and the territories in between to Russia. Phew...
Good News of the Week:
People are standing up. In sub-zero temperatures, millions of Germans are actually gathering on streets and squares to stand up against right-wing extremists and for democracy. The motto is "Never again is now!". Many are attending a demonstration for the first time, bringing children with them, having painted posters - democracy at work. I have been waiting a long time for the silent majority to finally stop being silent in the face of rising poll figures for the right-wing AfD (Alternative für Deutschland / Alternative for Germany) - currently at 22%.
The trigger was a subversive meeting of right-wing extremists who discussed strategies to deport all non-Germans, to put it simply. Uncovered by investigative journalists. I learned the word "demigration" in the process. Don't get me started on how valuable the so-called guest workers (mainly Turks) were for the German economic miracle back in the 1960s. That care for the elderly in this country would collapse without Eastern Europeans. Or that neither commercial kitchens would be able to survive without Filipinos nor IT departments without Indians. That immigration is necessary to maintain prosperity in our ageing society. And that integration fails more often due to a lack of willingness to accept immigrants than a lack of adaptability of those.
We are all human beings. A species that only exists because it has perfected the principle of cooperation. When one person goes hunting, another has to take care of the fire. Today we call that specialization. Or when was the last time you milked a cow, tilled a field, forged a shovel or prepared a medicine? Exactly. Morally, this becomes a community of solidarity in which not only does everyone do what they do best for everyone else, but the strong also stand up for the weak. You simply can't be blind in the right eye.
It is fitting that last week the Bundestag decided to amend the legislation on citizenship for immigrants. Against the votes of the conservative CDU/CSU and - surprise! - the AfD. In short: it will be easier and quicker than before. Above all because dual citizenship will be possible. It is important to know that in Germany, out of a population of 84 million, at least 12 million do not have a German passport. And are therefore not allowed to vote, for example. This door is now open. For a good 1.5 million Turks. And my wife. I have a strong suspicion that the radical right-wing AfD will not score any points with these citizens with their degenerate values.
Personal happy moment of the week:
We got rid of a monster. Eight years ago, I took over a yucca palm from a friend that was getting too big for his home. And I had a good place for it. And then only problems. The stubborn thing grew in all the wrong directions, attracted vermin and for years dripped a sticky secretion that ruined the sofas next to it, rendered a lamp useless, smeared a window and disfigured a speaker on the surround sound system. Now I've finally got round to getting rid of it. Which was difficult, because I had no room for it. It's now on the patio and dying, because it's still January in the northern hemisphere.
But I got over myself. And then for hours - there were four! - of scrubbing and cleaning to remove the incredibly dirty, sticky corner that had formed behind the sofas over the years. I managed it. And now I enjoy my first espresso in a clean living room every morning. I'm just not allowed to look out of the window to see the slow death of a living thing. Doesn't help.
I couldn't care less...
...that the train drivers' union has announced another complete rail strike. This time for a whole six days, starting last night. Workers' rights with all due respect, but if you no longer show any willingness to negotiate and the action becomes an end in itself, you are taking the population hostage. And you lose all understanding, not to mention sympathy.
It's fine with me...
...that we've had quite a mild winter this year. Because now I can take the bike to get to the station. And I don't feel guilty when my neighbors get up earlier than me to clear snow from our shared yard. And I'm happy about lower heating costs. Nice, actually. If it weren't for the human-induced climate change, what causes this mild winter. Which makes me shiver again.
As I write this...
...I listen to the first live album of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Wow, what a joy these guys bring to the stage. The Boss really knows how to work a crowd. Nice.
Post Scriptum
Gaza is still hell on earth. Unfortunately, that's all I can say at this moment. When are the next elections in Israel again?

USAF releases new images of the stealth B-21 Raider bomber
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/07923 - 18:30 in Military
The U.S. Air Force has released two new photos of the advanced B-21 Raider bomber, with one of them taken from a slightly higher place than the previous images.
The prototype of the B-21 manufactured by Northrop Grumman is difficult to detect, it was made in stealth technology and in the form of a flying wing. The future strategic bomber has the mission of strengthening the capabilities of the United States in terms of deterrence.
“The B-21 changes everything. With this aircraft, we deliver a new generation of stealth technology designed for the U.S. Air Force to fulfill its most complex missions. The world has never seen technology like the B-21," said Northrop Grumman CEO Kathy Warden when she revealed the aircraft with a similar appearance to the predecessor bomber, the B-2.
The U.S. Armed Forces, along with Northrop Grumman, made the official presentation of the B-21 Raider bomber on December 2, 2022, emphasizing that it is the world's first sixth-generation bomber. The two new images were made on November 28, days before the presentation.
The new aircraft with nuclear capacity is the culmination of seven years of work in the latest type of stealth bomber and is the first new aircraft in its category in more than 30 years. As announced at a ceremony in Palmdale, California, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin, the new aircraft should be the "backbone" of U.S. Air Force firepower and incorporate the "integrated deterrence" strategy.
Even the most advanced air defense systems will have trouble detecting the B-21 in the sky, Austin assured.
He also praised its long range, durability, versatility, "beginning of the space age" and adaptability to new weapons.
According to the announcement, the U.S. Air Force must acquire at least 100 aircraft. The first ones should be produced next year. The estimated cost of a bomber is about $730 million and, according to Bloomberg, the cost of labor on the new aircraft was within the originally planned budget of $25 billion, which is very rare.
As mentioned by Austin, the name of the aircraft, Raider, refers to the participants of the so-called "Doolittle's Raid" of 1942, a daring bombing of Japanese cities that was the first attack on Japanese territory and a symbolic revenge for the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

This week, the Pentagon released its annual report on Chinese military and security developments over the past year. That capped a busy season for the Government Printing Office: the National Security Strategy, National Defense Strategy, Nuclear Posture Review, and Missile Defense Strategy all came out publicly last month.
All the documents, not just this most recent one, emphasize China. Although it is Russian President Vladimir Putin who is raining down death and destruction on Ukraine, issuing nuclear threats to the West, and distorting energy as well as food markets worldwide, China gets pride of place as security challenge number one — even though China has not employed large-scale military force against an adversary since its 1979 war with Vietnam. Given Beijing’s capacities, the Pentagon is convincing when it describes China as its “pacing challenge.” But we Americans have demonstrated before the veracity of the slogan that if it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing — and we are tending towards overhyping the China threat in a way that could raise the risks of war.
To be sure, Beijing deserves most of the blame for today’s unsettled Indo-Pacific region, with its big military buildups, threatening words and actions towards Taiwan as well as other neighbors, menacing behavior in the East China Sea and South China Sea, and increased repression at home. Indefensibly, Chinese President Xi Jinping has also given succor to Putin as the latter wages his heartless and unjustifiable war in Europe. But on several key points, the recent U.S. government reports, as well as American policy more broadly, go too far:
The Pentagon report, like other documents, correctly criticizes Xi’s support for Putin, including the joint statement released just before Russia attacked Ukraine in February announcing that the China-Russia relationship knows no bounds. However, the relationship does in fact have bounds — and very important ones at that. To date, China has not sent weaponry to Russia during the Ukraine war, despite Putin’s requests that it do so, a point U.S. President Joe Biden once acknowledged in passing this fall. Yet the Pentagon’s 2022 Annual Report on China and other official documents, in explaining the nature of the Russia-China relationship, fail to acknowledge this crucial point.
The Pentagon’s latest report, again accurately, complains that China’s military budget has continued to grow at roughly a 7% annual rate of late. China now spends an estimated $250 billion to $300 billion a year on its armed forces, second worldwide only to America’s nearly $800 billion. Yet Beijing’s military budget, while robust, remains at less than 2% of GDP — the level considered a minimal acceptable effort within the NATO alliance. America’s own level exceeds 3% of GDP. Of course, NATO is a defensive alliance. China’s recent behavior – from the Senkaku islands in the East China Sea, to its missile launches near Taiwan, to the creation and militarization of artificial islands in the South China Sea, to (limited but quite lethal) aggression against Indian soldiers in the Himalayas – is not generally defensive. Yet it is still important to note that China is hardly engaged in blatant arms racing.
The Pentagon report sounds the clarion call that China appears to have the capacity, and a plan, to expand its nuclear forces from their current level of about 400 warheads to somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 by 2035 or so. This is certainly not good news for American strategy. However, an established superpower like the United States with 5,000 nuclear warheads of its own should not be surprised that a rising superpower like the PRC may desire to have 20% to 30% of that total itself.
The Pentagon also harps on the fact that, by ship count, China now has the world’s largest navy — generally failing to note that, because U.S. ships are typically much bigger, America’s naval tonnage exceeds China’s by a ratio of about two to one. Neither of these metrics is conclusive, and others are important too. But the frequency with which Washington complains about the number of ships in China’s navy wrongly implies that fleet size is the central standard of excellence for modern maritime capability, and that China therefore has somehow malevolently moved ahead of us in overall strength.
Washington rightly objects to Beijing’s claim of sovereignty over the South China Sea, and the Chinese military’s proclivity to harass U.S. Navy ships there. China is indeed in the wrong with these expansive claims and dangerous actions. However, U.S. views that free transit by other nations’ navies within the economic zones of another country should always be permitted are not universally accepted themselves. For example, under its reading of the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, even India believes that any country wishing to traverse the exclusive economic zones of another nation (within 200 nautical miles of the coastline, generally) should request permission for such a transit in advance. Yet we accuse Beijing of fundamentally challenging the rules-based order with its own behavior. We need to temper our anger, even as we continue the freedom of navigation operations.
The Biden administration’s National Security Strategy prioritizes China as the “most consequential strategic competitor” of the United States. This, like the National Defense Strategy’s framing of China as the Pentagon’s “pacing challenge,” is reasonable. But in other ways, we seek too often to stir the pot. Terms like pacing challenge stand in stark contrast to the administration’s frequent and highly inflammatory use of the term “genocide” to describe China’s treatment of its Uyghur population in Xinjiang province. Beijing does commit severe repression against the Uyghurs. A recent U.N. Human Rights Council investigative report chose the correct language, determining that China has been committing “…serious human rights violations…” in its August 2022 report on the subject. Yet diluting a culture and even curtailing some reproductive rights of a minority population, however morally reprehensible, do not constitute genocide. That latter term has a potent historical meaning that conjures up images of gas chambers and mass butchery. Whatever State Department lawyers may argue, what China does in Xinjiang is terrible, but it is not genocide, and the U.S. government should stop using that term.
The China challenge is going to be with us for a long time. We need to choose our words and our strategies with calm, balance, and precision.
The last point made here I'm not sure I necessarily agree with the author entirely (especially considering the way that the UN Human Rights Council report is reflective of the influence China has and had and how it managed to neutralize that discussion and further scrutiny into Xinjiang) but...

Why Steel Gabions Are the Preferred Choice for Indian Construction Projects
In recent years, steel gabions have emerged as one of the most sought-after solutions for various construction and civil engineering projects across India. From erosion control and landscaping to retaining walls and riverbank protection, steel gabions offer an array of advantages that make them the preferred choice for many construction professionals. As demand for sustainable, cost-effective, and durable solutions grows, steel gabion manufacturers in India are stepping up to meet the needs of the country’s booming infrastructure and construction sectors.
In this blog, we will explore why steel gabions are gaining popularity and why Steel Gabion Manufacturers in India are at the forefront of this trend.
What Are Steel Gabions?
A gabion is a cage or container filled with rocks, concrete, or other materials, typically made of wire mesh, used to stabilize soil and prevent erosion. Steel gabions are specifically constructed using high-quality steel wire mesh, which provides the necessary strength and durability for a wide range of engineering and landscaping applications. These mesh boxes can be filled with locally available materials like stones or gravel, making them not only cost-effective but also sustainable.
The key benefits of steel gabions include their ability to blend into the natural environment, high load-bearing capacity, flexibility, and ease of installation. These factors have made them highly effective in a variety of civil engineering applications.
1. Durability and Strength
One of the most compelling reasons why steel gabions are preferred in Indian construction projects is their strength and durability. The steel wire mesh used in these gabions is typically coated with zinc or PVC to prevent corrosion, ensuring they can withstand harsh environmental conditions. This is particularly important in India, where the climate varies widely—from arid deserts to humid coastal areas—and infrastructure must be able to handle extreme weather patterns.
The durability of steel gabions makes them ideal for applications like retaining walls, riverbank protection, and coastal defense systems, where long-term stability is crucial. The structure of the gabion, when filled with stone or other materials, can endure significant weight and pressure, providing a lasting solution to erosion control and slope stabilization.
2. Cost-Effectiveness
In India, construction budgets are often tight, and finding cost-effective yet durable solutions is essential. Steel gabions provide an affordable alternative to more expensive construction methods such as poured concrete or brick walls. The cost of steel gabion cages themselves is relatively low compared to traditional alternatives, and the materials used to fill the cages, like stones or gravel, are often locally sourced, reducing transportation costs.
Moreover, the installation of steel gabions is faster and requires less labor, which also translates into savings in both time and money. For large-scale projects, like highways, land reclamation, or dam construction, this cost-efficiency can make a significant impact on overall project expenses.
3. Environmentally Friendly
In an era where sustainability is a priority, steel gabions are an eco-friendly option for many construction projects. The materials used in gabions—particularly the steel wire mesh and the filling material—can be sourced locally, reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation. Additionally, gabions are biodegradable: over time, the rocks or stones in the gabions can settle into the surrounding landscape, allowing the structure to blend naturally into the environment.
The use of steel gabions also promotes soil retention and prevents erosion, especially in coastal and riverbank areas. In a country like India, where soil erosion can cause severe environmental damage, gabions provide a practical, low-maintenance, and sustainable solution for protecting natural landscapes.
4. Versatility and Flexibility
Another reason steel gabions are gaining popularity in India is their versatility. These structures can be used for a wide range of applications, from erosion control to retaining walls and decorative landscaping. Steel gabions are ideal for creating both functional and aesthetic structures, which is why they are favored in both urban and rural infrastructure projects.
The flexibility of steel gabions also makes them suitable for projects that require custom designs. Gabion cages can be manufactured in various sizes and shapes to suit specific requirements, whether it’s for a roadside barrier, a riverbank protection wall, or a scenic garden feature. This adaptability allows construction companies to tackle diverse projects with ease.
In addition, steel gabions can be stacked, interlocked, or layered to create taller and more robust walls, allowing for structural flexibility in design.
5. Easy Installation and Low Maintenance
The ease of installation of steel gabions makes them a favored option for many Indian construction projects. Unlike traditional building materials, gabions don’t require extensive groundwork or specialized equipment. They are relatively easy to assemble, and once the gabion cages are in place, they can be filled with locally sourced materials such as rocks, stones, or gravel. This not only reduces labor costs but also shortens construction timelines.
Furthermore, steel gabions are low-maintenance. Once installed, they require minimal upkeep, making them a long-term investment. They are designed to withstand weather conditions and environmental wear, so once they are set up, they can last for decades without significant deterioration.
6. Aesthetic Appeal
While steel gabions are primarily designed for functional use, they also have significant aesthetic value. Their unique, natural appearance makes them an attractive option for landscaping projects. Whether used for garden walls, decorative fences, or water features, gabions offer a modern yet rustic look that complements a wide variety of architectural styles.
In urban areas where space is limited and natural aesthetics are highly valued, steel gabions are increasingly used to create green spaces, enhance building facades, and blend construction with nature. The openness of the wire mesh allows plants to grow within the structure, adding greenery and further integrating the gabions into the surrounding environment.
7. Increasing Demand for Steel Gabion Manufacturers in India
With India’s rapid urbanization and growing infrastructure projects, the demand for steel gabion manufacturers in India has increased significantly. Leading manufacturers in India, such as JSW Steel, Hesco Bastion India, and Gabion India, have responded to this demand by offering high-quality gabions that meet both international standards and local requirements.
Indian manufacturers focus on producing steel gabions that are resistant to corrosion, have high tensile strength, and are adaptable to a variety of environmental conditions. As the construction sector continues to grow, Indian steel gabion manufacturers are expanding their capabilities to cater to the diverse needs of the country’s infrastructure projects, including dam construction, erosion control, urban landscaping, and river protection works.
Conclusion
In conclusion, steel gabions are rapidly becoming the preferred choice for many construction projects in India due to their numerous benefits. The durability, cost-effectiveness, environmental friendliness, and versatility of gabions make them an ideal solution for a wide range of civil engineering applications. Additionally, with easy installation, low maintenance, and a growing number of steel gabion manufacturers in India, this innovative solution is transforming the way infrastructure projects are designed and executed across the country.
As demand for sustainable and efficient construction methods continues to rise, steel gabions are set to play a crucial role in shaping India’s future infrastructure. For businesses and contractors looking for durable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective solutions, investing in steel gabions is undoubtedly a smart choice.

Impact of Geopolitical Tensions on Asia Pacific Defense Strategies
In recent years, geopolitical tensions have significantly shaped the defense strategies of various nations within the Asia Pacific region. Countries like China, Japan, South Korea, India, and Australia are at the forefront of adjusting their military policies to address regional and global security concerns. With the rise of strategic alliances, territorial disputes, and the increasing influence of superpowers, Asia Pacific Defense news has become a critical source for understanding the shifts in military tactics and defense planning.
Key Drivers of Geopolitical Tensions in Asia Pacific
One of the most notable geopolitical flashpoints is the South China Sea dispute. Several countries, including China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Malaysia, claim territorial rights over this resource-rich area. China’s assertive expansion, including the militarization of artificial islands, has raised alarms among neighboring countries and allies like the United States. The ongoing standoff has driven countries in the region to re-evaluate their defense capabilities, leading to a surge in defense spending and strategic partnerships.
Another key factor is the growing rivalry between the U.S. and China. As these two superpowers vie for influence, smaller Asia Pacific nations are increasingly caught in the middle. Defense news from the Asia Pacific frequently highlights how nations are navigating this tension, balancing economic ties with China while maintaining security alliances with the U.S.
Shifts in Defense Strategies
In response to these evolving threats, Asia Pacific countries have been updating their military strategies. According to the latest Asia Pacific Defense news, many countries are boosting their defense budgets and enhancing their capabilities in cyber defense, missile technology, and maritime security. For example, Japan has shifted from a purely defensive posture to a more proactive strategy, increasing cooperation with the U.S. and other allies.
India, too, has bolstered its naval forces and expanded defense cooperation with countries like Australia and Japan through platforms like the Quad Alliance. This shift is partly a response to China's growing naval presence in the Indian Ocean.
Strengthening Alliances
The rise in geopolitical tensions has also led to strengthened military alliances across the region. Key players like Japan, Australia, and India are forming new partnerships, both bilaterally and multilaterally, to counterbalance the influence of China and ensure regional security. Defense agreements, joint exercises, and intelligence-sharing initiatives are becoming more frequent, as highlighted by the latest Asia Pacific Defense news reports.
For instance, Australia’s participation in the AUKUS (Australia-United Kingdom-United States) pact has sparked discussions about the strategic pivot to counter China's influence in the Indo-Pacific. This has been seen as a major step in reinforcing Australia's long-term defense strategy.
Future Outlook
As geopolitical tensions continue to rise, Asia Pacific Defense news will remain a vital resource for tracking how nations in the region adapt their defense strategies. The balance of power in the Asia Pacific is constantly shifting, and countries are working to ensure they are prepared for any future conflicts or security challenges. In the coming years, defense collaborations, technological advancements, and strategic realignments will likely dominate the headlines, with an increasing focus on maintaining stability and security in one of the most dynamic regions in the world.
