Altmeri Poetic-Architecture: Referencing a response by Lawrence Shick to a question about Alinor buildings resembling insect wings and glass. There was a lot of criticism directed towards the appearance of Altmeri buildings in ESO when it first debuted, and then again when Summerset launched. Shick commented that, despite fanciful descriptions, their materials are still practical, and that architects can’t create buildings from poetry.

Megalomoths: Similar to the Sunbirds of Alinor, Megalomoths are spaceships that look like moths.

Dreugh Undersea Cities: From Mankar Cameron’s and Vivec’s writings. Both indicate the dreugh have (or had) their own empire, or other sorts of colonies that exist underwater.

Possi/impossipoint: Some more MK jargon, an impossipoint is a point in time where nothing suddenly becomes something. Likewise, a possipoint is where something that exists, can become something else. Essentially moments in time where something changes.

Night Mother is Mephala: A well known theory by this point. An in-universe and out of universe theory that Mephala is actually the Night Mother, and that the animosity between the DB and Morag Tong is her own creation.

The Oghma: Presuming this references to the Oghma Infinium. A book created by the wizard Xarxes, he named it after his wife, Oghma, who he made from his favorite moments in history. In general, an Oghma seems to refer to a journal or a recorded history.

Sovngarde on the moon: Shor/Lorkhan is the ruler of Sovngarde. His corpse is also said to be the two moons. This theory ties the two together and proposes Sovngarde is/is on the moons.

Misanthropic Space: Not much on this one. Taken together, Misanthropic means dislike of humanity. The book Sithis mentions that Sithis the god is sometimes thought of as misanthropic. Considering he’s also considered the void itself, Misanthropic space may refer to this.

Tharnatos: The Cyrodillic sect of the Mythic Dawn, mentioned in the Redguard forums. As a side note, tharn-atos probably refers to the Tharn family, of which Jagar Tharn had ties to Mehrunes Dagon

Continental Time: This draws from MK’s C0da and other threads. At the end of c0da a new universe is born, in a later thread (since deleted, it was a jab at the Otherkin community), MK states that this universe is Akavir, and that Yokuda (misspoken as Hammerfell) was the past (this might be a reference to timezones in the real world, but judging from previous comments from MK regarding his writing on the Redguard history I doubt this). This would mean the Redguards are from an entirely different universe and not related to the other humans, which is racist! This lore has since been disowned by MK and LadyN, but fans still perpetuate this theory. This post discusses racism within the writing. The Marukhaki Selective: A sect of the Alessian Order that was named after the First Era prophet Markuh. They caused the Middle Dawn, an especially long Dragon Break, by trying to remove Auri-El from Akatosh.

The Prime Gesalt: Another name for the Numidium. Gestalt comes from the german word for shape, and refers to a school of psychology that essentially looks at behavior and consciousness as a whole. Essentially this is probably referencing the theory that the souls of the Dwemer became the ‘skin’ of the Numidium, like cells in a body.

The Jills: Described as ‘female dragons’ (why they’re female when dragons traditionally have no gender, and not just a subset of dragons/Aka, is an unfortunate product of cis writers). They’re agents of Akatosh(more attributed to Alkosh, the dragon-cat) who mend tears in time. They’re described sometimes as sub-gradients which essentially means they’re small shards of Akatosh’s soul.

Versidue-Shaie still alive: Not much was found on this, but i don’t think much is needed. Probably a theory that the Tsaesci Potenate of the 1st Era wasn’t assassinated and is alive.

Molag Bal Destroyed Tamriel: Not much found on this either, I didn’t look particularly hard however, because there’s a lot of nasty shit people write about Molag Bal! If I had to take a stab at it, I'd assume it looks at the fragments of Nirn in Coldharbour and theorizes these may be from previous Kalpas. Possibly from Kalpas Molag Bal himself destroyed.

Seekers and Ascended Seekers: A possible (if flimsy) connection between Hermaeus Mora’s Seekers (seen in Dragonborn) and the Ascended Seekers of Morrowind. The book, Sithis has a line that states ‘Come unto the Sharmat Dagoth Ur as a friend AE HERMA MORA ALTADOON PADHOME LRKHAN AE AI’   This thread discusses this theory and why there’s probably no connection better than I can.

Ordinated Receptile: Possibly another name for the Eye of Magnus. The King of the Kamal from Akavir landed at Winterhold stating he was searching for the ordinated receptacle 

Varlinance+ No results from any site, there seems to be a typo in this entry

Rorikstead: A theory stating that Rorikstead is actually a cultist hotspot. Based on the fact that one of the characters seen in Skyrim, Rorik, states he founded the town. Previously in this area there was a town named Rorik’s Steading, founded by a man named Rorik. There are other key points, Rorikstead having good crop production and soul gems found in every house.

Sovengarde Shor’s Kalpic Army: Sovengarde is described as a hall where the spirits of Nords wait until the ‘final reckoning’ If taken with the obscure text ‘Shor, son of Shor.’ This is explained by the Kalpa cycle, where the universe is reborn and the Ehlnofey wars begin again. Also, this resembles the Norse mythology of Ragnarok.

World-Refusals/Anti-Creation: A primarily Dwemeri school of thought. Basically the denial of the world and existence, either to return to the state prior to the creation of Mundus (godhood essentially) or the nothingness/collective unity of souls before things learned to be separate. 

Mathematical Atheism: In the context of tes, this is probably another Dwemer belief. Mathematical Atheism is used to describe a couple different things over the years, but taken in context, I’m guessing it’s comparable to the irl philosophy that math isn’t something fundamentally woven into the universe. It’s more like a language humans have came up with to describe what we see, and aliens may have a totally different language of math than us.

Many Ysgramors: As if one wasn’t enough, a theory based on the fact that Ysgramor exists as a Draugr, and as a Soul in Sovengarde. Either the deeds of multiple people got attributed to his name, or there were multiple people named Ysgramor.

The Crux of Transcendence: another name for the Mantella (the big old soul gem that powers the Numidium when the heart doesn’t)

(D)aedric artifacts sentient: Fairly straightforward, artifacts are the essence of a d/aedra, condensed into an object, they also change hands fairly often, appearing in random locations, possibly by a mechanism inherent to the artifacts themselves. Excluding special cases like Umbra, this theory proposes the artifacts may make conscious choices to jump around.

Paleonumerology: A field of study within tes. Numbers carry significant symbolic value (the sharmat, 1+1, the tower being a 1, ect). Paleonumerology is studying these numbers, their historic basis, and their relation to the physical world. Remember when I said math is the language of the universe? Well this would be it.

Jagar Tharn was good: An argument supporting Jagar Tharn. If he was such a powerful mage, there’s a chance he knew Uriel Septim would be the last heir, and imprisoned him to keep the dragonfires lit. There’s more to it than that, here’s the full thread if you’re interested.

Aldmeris was real (in my mind): The ingame theory that Aldmeris is nothing more than a myth, acting as a setting for ancient stories, or a previous name for the Summerset Isles and/or Tamriel.

Vivec killed Moraelyn: Moraelyn, a member of the Ra’athim clan, was called the witch-king of Ebonheart, during the first era. He has no notable connection to Vivec, so i’m a little confused at this one. My best guess is Moraelyn was likely a proto-version of Nerevar, therefore this might be a roundabout statement regarding Foul Murder

Divine Skin/Dwemer Numidium Skin: A noncanonical statement by MK saying he believes the Dwemer’s souls were collectively absorbed, becoming the Numidium’s ‘skin’ 

The Dream: The thought that the entirety of the TES universe is either metaphorically, or literally, a dream. Metaphorically speaking, it’s a way to conceptualize the universe, everyone is a character playing a part in the dream, an individual in their own right, but ultimately a part of a greater whole. Literally speaking, the universe may be the Dream of Anu, who is using the universe to comprehend his grief at the loss of Nir and Padomay. It may also be the dream of an entity higher than Anu, called The Godhead. And even beyond this, the Godhead might be a metaphor for the creators of The Elder Scrolls, the world being their creation/drea

True Nords are all Bandits: The observation that bandits within Skyrim often call the gods by their Nordic names, rather than acknowledging their imperialized counterparts. 

Sotha Sil’s Last words: An obscure text written BEFORE the release of Morrowind. The author is anonymous, but many speculate that a dev wrote this.

Deep ones: In oblivion, in the town of Hackdirt there are books mentioning the worship of ‘The Deep Ones’ as you descend into the town you can see where the townsfolk worship these entities. There are a good deal of theories about what the Deep ones are, but they’re probably taken from the Cthulhu Mythos, specifically the Shadow over Innsmouth and the short story ‘Dagon’.

The Loveletter from the Fifth-Era: A noncanonical MK text that acts as the precursor to C0da. A letter sent from the future discussing Landfall and the events afterwards.

Kagrenac possessed Dagoth Ur/Sharmat: Dagoth Ur was said to hold the same motivations as Kagrenac, ie: remove colonizers from their home. Going a step further to look at non canonical sources, specifically the Dwemer Numidium Skin statement, Kagrenac was attempting to share godhood among the Dwemer, and may have succeeded. Morrowind shows us that Dagoth Ur was attempting to do the same. The main theory here is that Kagrenac’s spirit may have possessed Dagoth Ur and was the source of his motivations, or that an entity more powerful than both of them, the Sharmat, possessed them/took them over. The Sharmat may be metaphorical or literal, either a desire for power, a hunger for something more (which is comparable to Lorkhan creating Nirn, in an effort to find something more/enlighten everyone, or to his darker manifestations, the Greedy man, the thief, ect.)

Cuhlecain Reman Bloodline: In universe speculation that Emperor Cuhlecain (the ‘emperor’ before Tiber) and Reman are related.

Cyrodiil Spread to the Stars: Found within ‘Where were you when the Dragon Broke?” Empress Hestra of the Alessian Order, who ruled during the Middle Dawn, stated that the Cyrodiil empire spread to the stars. This could refer to the goals of the Marukhati Selectives in ‘removing Auri-el from Akatosh’, effectively exerting will upon the gods(stars) themselves. Or more likely, a reference to the out of game texts discussing space travel during the Middle Dawn.

Anti-CHIM: Separate from Zero-Summing (having an existential crisis so hard you disappear) although the two are sometimes used synonymously. Thalmor and Jygalagg: A theory that states that the Thalmor worship Jygalagg due to his nature as the prince of ‘order’

Dibella=Y’ffre: A thought that these two deities of nature and beauty are the same entity. This theory is mostly hinged on the (very cishet) thought that mer are feminine and have the masculine god Y’ffre (who is described as female in lore occasionally), and men are masculine and have Dibella who is feminine.

The Void Ghost: Described as the lost spirit of Lorkhan, who remains because his work isn’t done. 

House cats are Khajiit spies: Referring to the Afliq, a form of Khajiit that resembles a housecat. Because of this they’re often used as spies.

TEM (Warspore Tiberia): From the text Cyrus vs.Tiber Septim, either a battleship or battlespire.

The Athedorix Conundrums: A book that is never actually seen in game, and only mentioned briefly. Said to contain 9 riddles that drive people mad.

Aetherius Dream Visitation: Pretty much what it sounds like. The ability to travel to one another’s dreams (probably through the Dreamsleeve)

Revelation at the Death of Alesh: While this doesn’t directly refer to anything I've found, I'm guessing it’s discussing Marukh the Prophet, who in a state of near death was visited by Alessia’s spirit.

Empire ended in 3E 417: This year could be seen as a beginning to an end. The warp in the west occurred, allowing the Underking to die, keening and sunder were lost to Dagoth Ur, which eventually lead to the empire taking an interest in Morrowind and the Heart being ‘destroyed’ leading up to the events of Morrowind and Oblivion and the end of the Septims. As a side note, this seems to be an original theory by the original author of the iceberg, as i can only find it in association with discussions like these.

Coldharbour is the remains of Lyg: The only discussion on this is on 4pleb, while I don’t give enough shits to read that thread, if I had to guess this would be a theory connecting Coldharbours mimicry of Tamriel, to Lyg being a parallel to Tamriel

Falmer White souls: An observation that in Skyrim, the Falmer souls fit into white soul gems, instead of black soul gems. Some theorize this is a result of the Dwemer’s curse upon them, shrinking their souls.

“Sucks to be you, Stank,” he says breathlessly, fingers flying over the keyboard, and Tony cranes his neck until he can read Rhodey’s reply (and on Tony’s fucking account what in the hell!):

Three seconds later, Stephen walks through a portal, looking oh-so-fucking-gorgeous in his battle robes, and wearing a scowl of irritation that bodes well for rough, mock-angry sex in the near future.

Tony grins unapologetically, and abandons the lure of social media in exchange for his pseudo husband.

It’s an easy choice.

In this case though, you have done a really good job displaying why he doesn’t want to use this option, as well as what it takes for him to be willing to use it, that I mostly feel sad for deku that he was forced to let Eri’s spirit possess him, instead of getting caught up in the hype of an awesome moment

Honestly though, that’s also my reaction to the chapter as a whole. It was full of interesting world building and was generally an awesome chapter, but it was also well written enough that I also feel Izuku’s emotions and mostly just feel melancholy now.(Seriously, when I look back on it, “I invite you in” opened the gateway to an awesome and well deserved ass kicking, but it’s mostly just heart breaking. Why can’t I just enjoy Izuku kicking ass? Why?)

ahaha yeah, i try to have good reasons for why characters do or don’t take certain actions, and this whole fusion thing is something he keeps REALLY close to his chest... i’m glad that carried across well! it is very sad though that he feels cornered into using this ability.

I think it will always be difficult to a certain degree to run this blog. Not that I don’t love every second of it believe me, I just (LMAO LEAVE IT TO ME TO START TEARING UP IN THE MIDDLE OF TYPING THIS) I’ve never wanted to do something I wanted to just because I can.  I don’t run this blog expecting anything in return. My hardest year because I decided to take a multitude of difficult classes. I have cried tears over so many classes (I’m crying writing this response omfg PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER JESS), I have had plenty of mental breakdowns, a lot of crying whenever someone simply asks me if I’m ok or suggests I get more sleep. I have been an emotional wreck all year. It is my fault though, I did decide to take challenging courses this school year, but one can only run on four hours of sleep everyday for so long and not be emotional I guess. AND I WAS TERRIFIED. I was so scared that in the course of this year, through all the difficult hours of studying and finishing homework at 2/3am in the morning before having to wake up at 6am and walk to school by 7am, that I wouldn’t have the time or effort to do just the one thing I wanted to do the most in the world. I only had one real hobby I loved doing and it was running this blog (again hella emotional and dramatic sorry it’s like one am here when I’m writing this). So I forgo sleep to get everything done. It’s not healthy but in my mind, if I gave up on this blog for one day, that one day might turn into two days, which would turn into a month, and then I’d never be able to do anything ever again just because I kept pushing it off, treating it as if it didn’t mean the world to me when it so very dearly does. OK I’M RAMBLING ABOUT MYSELF NO ONE CARES JESS AHEM,,, My point is, I sacrificed sleep for school and this blog not because I was forced to, but because if I slept, this feeling of guilt when I woke up in the morning, a feeling of “ahh I could have done more, I could have been better” would permeate my mind for who knows how long. I didn’t want to disappoint anyone. I hate disappointing people. So to hear you say this blog and all the stuff we do on it makes you happy? It makes me think maybe I’m not such a big disappointment after all, and maybe if I keep working hard, I can continue making more people happier, and that’s all I really want. True, with college approaching, I can’t make any guarantees. I anticipate not being able to do anything at all, and that idea is scary too and makes me want to work even harder now while I still can. I will definitely try to get more rest though??? So, I feel like a piece of shit and I wanted to cry; and I feel better about crying when I cry while writing angst; so I decided I’ll break a few hearts today. You are warned, this is sad.

“PETER, NO!!” Tony hears himself scream; but it’s too late. He knows it’s too late as he says it. He runs to the kid’s side and Rhodey and Barnes provide cover for them. He half holds, half drags the teenager to the nearest building that looks kind of stable; so that he can check the kid’s injury. War Machine and Winter are already back in the fight, although they are protecting the entrance, so that they can tend to the wound. Tony is incredibly grateful to them. 

He tries contacting his armors again; tries talking to FRIDAY while he tears his jacket off to use as a bandage. He tears the Spider-Man suit even more (it already has a hole on it) and Tony prays that the wound isn’t so bad as that would suggest, but it is. It’s worse. 

“Karen, vitals. How is he?” he asks the AI, while bundling up his jacket and pressing it to the wound. It worries him that Peter hasn’t said anything yet, just whimpers or little cries. 

“Mr. Stark...it’s no good, boss. Peter is losing a lot of blood. His stomach, liver and aorta have been punctured. With no instant medical care, I’m afraid...Boss? I’m afraid he won’t make it.” she answers, voice trembling. She is young, but she’s learning; and she adores Peter. This must be hurting her too. 

“Kid? Hey, kid.” Tony says, removing the mask. He taps the boy’s cheek a few times until Peter opens his eyes. 

“Wha-? Wher-? Ow!” he says, breathing fast and looking at his chest, where the blood is pouring out and drenching Tony’s jacket. 

“You were impaled and then thrown away a quite a few yards, Pete.” he answers, grim. “We have to try and contain the bleeding, alright? Until I can get one of my suits and get you out of here.” The boy nods, and puts his hands on his stomach, over Tony’s. 

“...Bos-s?” he hears on his ear. 

“Thank god, FRI! In how long can a suit get here? Any suit. Any. Peter is injured and I need to-” 

“-I-m...zzorry, Bos-z, the suitz and I have been compro-missed...” she says, before going off line.

 “No, no, no, no!” Tony yells, the reality setting in. He can’t leave this place; so Peter can’t leave this place. And there’s no chance of him surviving without medical care. “Where is the nearest hospital!?” he yells in his comm, trying to look for an alternative. 

“Four blocks away; it was demolished by the first wave.” answers War Machine, in a tight voice. 

“No, no, no, no...” keeps murmuring the engineer. Peter looks at him and holds his hand a bit tighter. 

“It’s okay.” 

“No, it’s not okay! You are fucking sixteen! You are not supposed to be dying! Not you, not you.” he repeats. 

Peter makes a chocking noise and a bit of blood pours out of his mouth. Tony takes a deep breath and tries to calm down. He, he won’t fall apart in front of Peter. He is not the one dying here. 

“What is it? Do you need to be prompted up?” he asks, already moving to fit Peter’s shoulders and head on his lap. “Better?” he asks, and then wants to slap himself for his stupidity. 

“It..it hurts, Tony” whispers Peter, looking at him with shinning eyes full of tears. Tony swallows. He doesn’t...can’t believe that this young, smart and kind boy was about to leave this world. That he won’t have Peter’s smile as a company in his labs, the continue blabber that always cheers his days up, or that he will have to live the rest of his miserable existence without another hug from this kid that dig himself a hole in Tony’s heart and never left. 

Tony would give everything he has, and he means everything, if with that would Peter would live. Because what do armors, and cars and houses and money mean when he can’t save this brilliant kid; when he can’t do anything but lay there and let him bleed out on his lap!? He would give his life too; but that’s not worth much, is it? He has tried everything; and nothing will work. The other suits are not responding, the nearest hospital is destroyed (as is everything around them), and the kid probably lost a chunk of his liver and his aorta; and Tony can’t do anything!! He wishes, oh, how he wishes that Peter hadn’t jumped in front of him. God, if only he had left on his suit (and he knows, he knows that he will feel so guilty for thinking that later; because that family needed to be out this area, but damn it, this is his kid!!) so he could get Peter some help; get him to a hellicarrier or something. They are trapped in this ruined floor of what used to be a nice building, with only parts of the walls as protection; and Tony barely managed to get Peter here and away from the actual fight. He is to old and too weak to help...to help one of the most important people of his life. 

“Peter, Peter why...? Why!?” he half yells, tears falling on the kid’s cheeks, mixing with the blood on his face. “Why did you do that? I-” 

“Y-you would have d-died...” Peter answers him in a murmur. 

“You are dying!” Tony sobs, “Peter, you are dying and I can’t stop it.” he cries, burring his head on his chest. 

“A-are you mad?” Peter asks with a grimace. “Because I’m sorry, Tony, I’m sorry, but I couldn’t let you die. I can’t lose another p-parent when I can do something to help it.” and now the kid is crying too and Tony feels even worse, because these are his last moments on this earth and Tony is making him feel guilty over sacrificing his own life, damn it. 

“No, no, kid, I’m not mad.” he whispers, caressing the boy’s hair, trying to comfort him a bit. “I’m proud of you, Peter. You were magnificent out there. I just wish you hadn’t done that. I care about you, Pete, I love you like a son; the last thing I want is to see you die.” he weeps. 

“Don’t leave!” Peter exclaims, trying to move and then crying out at the pain that caused him. 

“Hey, hey, hey” Tony hushes him. “I’m not going anywhere, okay? I’m not leaving you.” he promises, more tears pouring out of his eyes. Peter nods minutely, relaxing as much as possible while being in such amount of pain. 

“Can you...” starts the kid. 

“Can I what?” asks Tony. “Anything you want, I’ll do it.” 

“Can you sing to me? Like you do s-sometimes to your bots?” he shyly asks, blushing a bit. 

“Yeah, yes, of course.” agrees Tony. “What do you want me to sing?” 

“I don’t know...something soft. Calm.” 

“Like a lullaby?” wonders the engineer. “I don’t know any lullabies...” but Tony already knows what he wants to sing to Peter. He probably decided he would sing this to him a long time ago; but never got around to do it, and he now regrets that with all his being. He wishes he could share this in a happier occasion, but he’s a sadistic selfish bastard, and he wants this memory; no matter how much it’ll hurt. “...but I might know something. Close your eyes, please. Try to relax, okay? The pain will stop soon enough” he says, swallowing a sob.

Peter listens to him (for once, he listens to him); and Tony lets out all the tears he was holding back. He has enough practice singing this song while crying. 

“T-try to remember the kind of September when life was slow and oh, so mellow... Try to remember the kind of September when grass was g-green and grain was yello-ow...” he keeps singing, never taking his eyes of Peter’s face. His memory takes notice of every detail; because this is the last time he will see his boy alive. “... try to remember when life was... so tender that d-dreams were kept beside your p-pillow...” Tony knows that if he had let Peter’s dream be just that, a dream, this wouldn’t have happened. He tried to help the kid, and as always, he ended up ruining it all. Peter is dying. There’s...there’s no other choice here. No escape. No waking up from a nightmare. The kid was dying, every breath slower and shallower than the one before, and...and it was all his fault. “... D-deep in December it's n-nice to remember without the hu-rt the h-heart is h-hollow...” The last smile Peter ever gave was a small, beautiful thing; and Tony will cherish it in his heart forever. ‘Thanks for staying, d-dad’ are his lasts words, and Tony feels like a string has been cut inside of him, and then he’s burying his head in Peter’s chest and finishing the song between whimpers and sobs “d-deep in D-December ou-ur hea-arts should r-remember a-and f-follow...” 

  The scream that tears itself out of his throat when he hears nothing on Peter’s chest freezes the blood on every being that gets to listen to it; Avenger, Guardian, ally or foe.

like any community with more than a few people, there have been ups and downs in the path few months. i wanted to add here as a general shout out that i have never felt so welcome and loved in a community that i originally would have thought would be more disjointed than what you might find on a forum. like, i’ve changed a lot thanks to you guys! i’ve been able to get over some of the hurdles of my social anxiety (i didnt jump over them so much as drag myself across the ground and painfully crawl over them) and i just... i feel good? i feel like people like me? there are still times where my anxiety insists i’m nothing but a useless burden, but i actually... feel like people enjoy having me around? holy shit!

i made some really cool new friends and got to know a different kind of roleplay community. im overall incredibly grateful for this wild and weird journey i’ve been on, and the journey certainly isn’t over by any means! i hope to keep seeing you guys around!

I want to pre-face this long rant by saying I was not expecting some masterpiece of writing from me:a. I’ve once seen a reviewer compare Mass Effect to Fallout 2 and, honestly, it’s ridiculous. You don’t compare pulp prose to philosophical science fiction, they are made for different purposes and engage you differently. Mass Effect was always a soap opera with messy plot and cool one-liners and it’s okay. So I’m only looking at me:a at it’s own merits - as an open world RPG and Mass Effect game.

- actual protagonist of the game is your AI. sorry for spoilers I guess? You really don’t matter, you’re only there to carry your AI to the place where it needs to do it’s thing. You just do whatever it tells you to do. It’s all would be a lot more effective if they just gave AI its own body, like they did with EDI in me3. You don’t solve problems, your AI does. Whatever little decisions you get to make usually are not well-informed, so you just pick whatever with only cosmetic consequences. At the end of the game, they try to, um, solve it, by magically, out of nowhere, giving you ability to hack ancient machines without your AI. With your sheer willpower, I guess? But no one else can? It’s really hard, bc your nose bleeds! Really, really bad writing.

- This game about discovering new galaxy has no feeling of discovery. That sounds weird and impossible even, but they’ve managed it with a simple trick - all that changes from planet to planet is the climate. The actual places you’re going to visit on locations are absolutely the same - remnant base, kett camp, generic house structure #1 and #2,... that’s it. Once you’ve been in one remnant vault, you know what’s you’re going to see in all others. I’m not talking about them having same maps, but same structure - empty dark halls with glowy green lines, lots of same enemies, activate the consoles mindlessly until the game throws sudoku puzzle at you and then you’re done. There’s nothing new or interesting to discover! When you learn what’s the gimmick is going to be on a new planet, you know pretty much everything about it without even exploring. Cold planet? Everything is covered in snow, same buildings. Desert planet? Everything is covered in sand, same buildings. Good for you if you really liked these same empty buildings, I guess.

There are should be unique, interesting places on every planet that you can only see there and nowhere else and that you can meaningfully engage with. When I saw the wreck of a giant remnant ship on the Dune-rip off planet, I was excited. I thought it’s going to be something new to actually explore and discover shit there! Nope, it’s the same remnant base you’ve seen 100 times already, and you don’t even do anything interesting there. It’s like they went out of their way to not do anything creative and engaging. The Dune robot sandworm? Just cosmetics, can’t actually fight him, doesn’t have a quest, despite NPCs constantly talking about how you’d be crazy if you tried to hunt it. Let me fucking hunt that thing! These cool beasts flying in the skies on Havarl? Put some ancient temple there where you can summon them and, idk, fly on them or something. How cool would it be? If you’re ripping off Avatar, then why stop halfway and not take all actually cool stuff?

Worldbuilding. Listen. It’s an entire new galaxy. They could do literally do ANYTHING. Aliens made of crystals, or really weird cyborgs, or sentient plants, or shapeshifters, or beings of pure energy, or ANYTHING. And all they’ve come up with are the most generic grey bad guys and most well-known Star Wars tentacle-heads rip-offs? Come on, bioware, make a fucking effort!

Kett are so boring, I don’t even want to talk about them in detail. “They change other species into becoming monsters and then send them back to fight their own people!” Excuse me, I believe I played that game? It was called Mass Effect 3? Kett are literally just Reapers rip-off concept-wise, and, well, all their “culture” has to offer is “religious zealots.” Groundbreaking.

So the only real new race that you can meaningfully interact with and explore that we get is angara. And they have exactly one gimmick about them (and we’ll get to that gimmick itself later) But Ravel, you could say, one gimmick for the entire race is exactly how original mass effect species were designed too! Yeah, sure, but there’s one big difference. There were more than 10 alien races in original mass effect! Some of them were distinctly weird and non-humanoid. Volus, elcor, hanar, etc. Each of them was characterized by one cliche, but because they were all mixed up together, you really could get a sense of diverse, big galaxy. And in me:a we don’t even have most of the original species! Only asari, turians, salarians, krogans, and all of them we already know. So the only *new* race to explore is angara, and they are not even that interesting to explore? Weirdly, all stuff about their culture and religion and whatnot is hidden in side-quests, which you can skip or just miss said details because you yawned. Their culture is, weirdly, not integral to your interaction with them. And even if you do discover these details, they are not so great or interesting or original. They certainly can’t compensate for the lack of any other aliens to interact with. If you put one single culture in the setting to explore for the players, you better make sure it’s a damn interesting and unique one, like the dunmers in Morrowind. Angara just end up feeling… bland.

And their gimmick is… ugh… is that they are really in touch with their feelings. And it’s illustrated precisely by nothing. Like, one time Jaal is excited about some minor plot victory and the game basically forces you to say “um why are ur so happy?” And he’s like, let’s celebrate minor achievements even before accomplishing our goal, we angara are so in touch with our feelings! Like… no offense, I don’t hate that guy or anything, but you can swap his model with a human one and get rid of him saying that he’s so ~alien, and no one will be able to tell something is up with him. He’s just an emotional guy, ok, though the game also doesn’t really show you him being emotional, it just TELLS you. Literally, he keeps referencing to the feelings situation in every goddamn conversation. First of all, for him it should be a norm, he should see humans as weird and restricted instead of angara as so ~open with emotions~. Secondly, it seems like no other angara got the memo about their “in touch with feelings” gimmick.

- The plot. It’s predictable and average and a plot-holey mess overall, but again, the plot in ME games was always messy and plot-holey. I feel like the main problem is the quality of writing. The dialogues are just badly written, from both sides - NPCs are boring and your responses are often just saying the same thing with slightly different tones. Most of the time the option to say what you want to say is just not there, and instead there are two options that are absolutely identical and pointless. And a lot of times the “full” line has, like, nothing to do with short version on dialogue wheel, or short version is really vague and you have to guess wtf it’s going to mean, which does not help you connect with your PC at all.  And it’s where the horrible animation backstabs the game, because what you end up with is two uncanny valley dummies grimacing through generic uninspired dialogue without your real control when it’s supposed to be emotionally engaging and cinematic.
